I am speechless… A truly flawless version of this astonishingly good track. Truly one of the best female artists of our generation. Brandi,, you really should record this on a future album.
This performance is unbelievable. Not often does a great song get better when others cover it, but this group is giving the original respect and honoring it while adding some spice. Thanks to the whole group.
Howard isn't normally known for understatements, but this was MUCH more than a treat. This was a feast for anyone remotely into music. The sound quality is magnificent, almost equaling a truly epic performance by Brandi and her band. Moments after initially listening to this on speakers, I had to throw on my headphones to hear every nuance of this instant masterpiece.
Christmas of ‘71, in a snowy hash induced haze, I first listened to Madman; that was about ten years before Brandi Carlile was even born. To think that, a half century later, it would be stunningly covered by an artist as talented as Carlile confirms the song is artistically greater than the sum of its parts. Brilliant.
How have I only recently discovered this incredible singer and her band? I can't stop searching youtube to hear more of her performances. I am utterly blown away and so excited to hear more and more. Incredible, soulful, genuine talent!
Oh my goodness, I absolutely agree with you on both cover songs!! Sara Bareilles’ version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is sooo captivatingly and hauntingly beautiful, just as much as Brandi Carlile’s version of “Madman”!
What an incredible version of Madman, Wonderful performance from Brandi, and everyone involved. It's great to hear a John/Taupin song that's not one of the hits, because in my opinion the real gems of Eltons lie with the non hits, of course from that run of albums 1971-76,but also some of the later career stuff. Anyway I digress!. Thanks Brandi.
I'm 65 this song was part of me when first released. Carlile is knocking it, she plays tribute in the most sensational way. How could you possibly transcend Mozart?
This song has followed me around for 30 years (the time I first heard it), and this is the best. It is something to listen to the original track and realize how good it is. It is another thing altogether to listen to performers that felt the same way and made it a part of their being, grow with it inside, and recreate. Musical evolution through generations.
With all the silly so called musical guests on SNL in the last few years it was so refreshing to see a real musical guest Brandi Carlile last Saturday on SNL! She blew me away, instant fan!
Stunning. Beautiful. I didn't think anyone could ever cover my favorite Elton song from my fav Elton album, but dadgum honey; you made this song your own.
Amazing version of this song, I am a HUGE Elton fan, he’s my number one so I can tend to be critical. This though, Brandi nailed it. Fantastic job vocally and musically. Incredible! 👍👍✌️💜🎵
That’s gotta be the hardest song in history to play and with that many people on stage getting it down to perfection is insane. Awesome talent all the way around
Had an absolute blast listening to her open up to Howard. My girlfriend has been a longtime fan, and I've always enjoyed her in collaborations with my favorite Seattle bands. She is an absolute talent and her her album is breathtaking.
Just an FYI, the original was done in 71…EJ then performed it similarly with strings and such. Elton is a genius when it comes to rock opera. Madman and Funeral for a Friend are great examples to Elton/Taupin genius. I think Brandi is phenomenal and she and her band covered Madman excellently! Bravo 👏

Lovely. I always heard Nixon was the madman.
She sings so freaking powerfully but it looks like she’s barely trying. Unreal talent.
It's called mixed voice.
That’s exactly what I just said to my wife
Delightful
I am speechless… A truly flawless version of this astonishingly good track. Truly one of the best female artists of our generation. Brandi,, you really should record this on a future album.
I can play some guitar but dang. To be able to open your mouth and have this come out. Would truly be a gift from God.
Also check her cover of Space Oddity and Woodstock from Austin City Limits. So good. 😊✌️
This performance is unbelievable. Not often does a great song get better when others cover it, but this group is giving the original respect and honoring it while adding some spice. Thanks to the whole group.
That is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on Howard Stern or anywhere. And he’s had a lot of great performances on his show. That’s a 10/10
Check out her version of Hallelujah.
Agreed. It's in Howard's top 5. Beautiful.
Agree John. As always, the sound engineering is as good as it gets.
Perfectly said 😉
It's an 11.

Yup, "in for a REAL treat" is definitely an understatement!
Amen!
I tried liking this twice.. I think I agree 😂
Brandi is the REAL deal......she deserves to be famous, she's just terrific.
35 people fell asleep and hit the thumb down accidentally. Because there's no way this isn't anything but amazing.
35 people were looking to fight.
No kidding! She's a badass.
Yep
That’s a double negative.
I read somewhere that Elton loves it to! Idk about Bernie 😜

couldn't agree more, song is timeless Carlile nailed it !
She does a great job
She is tremendous. I love this song.
The entire band is terrific!
I’m a fellow traveler, fully ensconced in the same generation. It was a gem in 1971. And this supremely talented artist takes it all to another level.
The strings in the back are an absolute gem! A real tribute to the original.....spectacular remake!
I’m blown away by the talent here! Not just Brandi…..
Brandi will go down in history as one of the greatest singers in this time period. Read her book from poverty to this❤️
A beautiful book and human being!
No she won't.
@@phoudi yes. Trust she will
@@natashab3412 No, Trust she won’t. Due to ONE and one reason only.

The sound production for music is always immaculate in Howard studios. Awesome performance.
Sirius LA Studio , not Howard’s NY studio. phenomenal nonetheless.
That woman’s voice is always amazing. And the band sounds great
Exactly! Killer solo toward the end was icing on the cake!
What an amazing version of a classic song. I got goosebumps....... Brandi is so talented. Definitely the best female singer of her generation.
Every time I listen it just gets better, Brandi is TOTALLY INCREDIBLE
The twins backing up this powerful woman with ever ounce of their being. That’s love. 💙
That is my favorite album of Elton John’s. I think of it as a masterpiece. Kudos to the acoustic guitar player, he was fantastic. Great cover.
That’s Tim Hanseroth. He’s an exceptional guitarist, singer and songwriter
Absolutely masterpiece, sandwiched in between two other Elton masterpieces…… Tumbleweed and Honky Chateau.
@@amsajjr …and Tim’s twin brother Phil on bass.
Most of the acoustic playing you hear is her.
Madman Across the Water! Is great. "Indian Sunset" is so good too. Yes, it's a great album.

Her SNL performance last week was incredible
@@pureforce469 Thanks! I will definitely check that out.
@@asandi4444 what did you think?
@@pureforce469 Both performances were amazing!!
Probably the best performer I’ve ever seen in concert. Simply the best.
Real musicians , outstanding
I’m 55 grew up listening to real musicians, what a treat!!!
Her voice is so effortless. Saw her live and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Holy Shit they broke out the violins and brought the show to another level!!!
You should see them live Next level does not even explain it. Easily the best performers of this time.
Only 1 Violin. 1 Viola and 1 Cello
An Elton John song without a piano. And they absolutely crushed it!
Howard’s genuinely been a huge fan of her for awhile, he brings her up all the time. I can see why… didn’t realize they got along so well.
She’s a fan of the show. I bet she used to watch E!
She and her band is a Mack-Hine!!
Brandi is amazing and her band is beyond awesome.
Holy fuck guys. BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL as always. I don't want it to end.
Shew! What that woman can do vocally is supernatural.
Phenomenal musicianship, outstanding vocals! What more can one say? Oh yeah, the live recordings done in Howard's studio are always the best!
Great live sound!
This was done in the Sirius LA studio , so kudos to the Sirius techs.
Simply the best "Madman.." cover. One of the best EJ covers in pair with Sarah Bareilles "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".
Oh my goodness, I absolutely agree with you on both cover songs!! Sara Bareilles’ version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is sooo captivatingly and hauntingly beautiful, just as much as Brandi Carlile’s version of “Madman”!
Listen to Nancy Wilson covering Mona Lisa's and mad hatters
She has such a clean crisp voice. And a great outlook. Stunning
The sound on this is fantastic. Would love to hear her and Elton duet on this.
First Elton song I really got into thanks to my neighbor across the street. He loved this song and transferred that to me.
she is terrific..sings from the bottom of her soul on every song...
Very cool rhythm. So complicated to play with such precision. Awesome band.
What an incredible version of Madman, Wonderful performance from Brandi, and everyone involved.
It's great to hear a John/Taupin song
that's not one of the hits, because in my opinion the real gems of Eltons lie with the non hits, of course from that run of albums 1971-76,but also some of the later career stuff. Anyway I digress!. Thanks Brandi.

Wow, what a gorgeous rendition! Those strings are the bomb!
She crushed this beyond recognition. Elton, this is Brandi's now.
This will always be Elton's but Brandi made it theirs!
Brandi has such an incredible voice. She nails this song perfectly!
This song has followed me around for 30 years (the time I first heard it), and this is the best. It is something to listen to the original track and realize how good it is. It is another thing altogether to listen to performers that felt the same way and made it a part of their being, grow with it inside, and recreate. Musical evolution through generations.
Amazing cover. Respect from a genius of this generation, to another genius of an earlier generation. !!
Wow! It's one of my all-time favorite Elton John songs -- so amazing, and Brandi and those musicians knocked it out of the park! Wow!
Brandi has such a great voice. She does an electric version of this song and it blew me away.
She is so freakin' good. Her version of this song makes me stop, close my eyes and go down my 70's memory lane.
Impossible not to LOVE Brandi, then she sings with her band, and you're a complete goner.. ❤ This was so far beyond amazing!!
With all the silly so called musical guests on SNL in the last few years it was so refreshing to see a real musical guest Brandi Carlile last Saturday on SNL! She blew me away, instant fan!
Say kind things without trashing others. Everyone thinks their own generation is the only music worth listening to.
Wow!!!! I love Brandi Carlisle.....what a voice!!!!!
This is my favorite Elton John song and sung beautifully by Brandi!!!
Definitely one of Elton’s best, and covered beautifully. Gave me chills❣️🤩🥰😍
Broken Horses has a "Madman" Rock Opera vibe to me. So beautiful with those sweet voices!
Totally..rock opera is back with Right on Time…🙌🤯
Absolutely! I thought the same thing as soon as I heard it
very good observation - totally spot on!
Nailed it!! So good
What is it about Brandi Carlisle that no matter what she sings I'm speechless and in tears?
Because she is THAT GOOD!!!
#same. Love her!
I am in tears too...why is that?
Because she is just absolutely amazing 🤩
For me it's that she seems to put her whole heart and soul into her performances.
Stunning. Beautiful. I didn't think anyone could ever cover my favorite Elton song from my fav Elton album, but dadgum honey; you made this song your own.

What an amazing performance and what a singer she is. I have to admit I never knew how much power she had behind her voice. Brava.
Dive deep into her videos, she and her band are exceptional musicians. And her singing… Magical.
This performance by one of my favorite artists is soooo tight. I agree with Howard beautiful l didn't want it to end.
One of our finest contemporary artists. I am always impressed
Brandi's vocals are outta of this world on this song .
A Brilliant arrangement of a great classic.
damn, she is good!!!!! a fab underrated song and she KILLS it!!!!!!! amazing band too
I’ve been aware of this talented musician for sometime. But I didn’t appreciate her talent. Her voice. WOW! So good! Thank you!!!!
It shows Howard’s evolution that he respects and admires Brandi and has referred to her as the coolest person on the planet.
This is insane! She is incomparable!!❤️❤️

One of the best songs ever
Sweet! Love the acoustic version with string! Awesome!
The string section was phenomenal.
Beautifully done
Yes. listening to Brandi sing “Madman Across the Water” is a treat. I really liked her interpretation of the song and the "madman".
Have heard/played this song a thousand times. Still get chills - wonderful performance by a top shelf performer/band.
Such a beautifully performed cover of an iconic song. Just wow!!!
Good God! How good is that!
The commitment to the original Paul Buckmaster string arrangement is 👌🏾
She’s a disciple..
Brandi I LOVED this song when EJ did it in 70s. one of my absolute faves but your cover IS BETTER THAN ORIGINAL!
