I’ve seen so many complaints on poor quality and controls break right away or are unresponsive. My wife bought me this for my birthday 2 weeks ago. On my unit, everything works, the controls are very responsive, and it’s a perfect duplication of the original I played as a kid. The build does take time and patience but it’s worth it! Love Tron and it’s awesome to have one in my home.
The "spiders" are actually called Grid Bugs. They are in the movie for about 5-seconds. They were to feature in a longer scene, but they've ran out of money and time. The game devs had access to the original scripts and story boards. Then included a Grid Bugs mini-game.
I was obsessed with this game back in ‘82. I know a lot of people don’t look fondly on the game itself, but I genuinely love it for its gameplay…not to mention the 8-bit Wendy Carlos OST is amazing! Great video!

Dude that intro got me hyped. I agree with you completely. I loved your comment about the coin doors. There’s no excuse for them not releasing it moving forward. Great review!
Nice review Michael. I think you hit all the main points. There are folks out there who make vinyl graphics for the kick-plate, I picked one up and it looks great, and really helps to make this cab stand out in my home arcade. Thus far, like yourself I haven't had any problems with the flight stick cracking, but I picked up one of glens just in case, as A1UP's replacement is the same, faulty design. Likewise I haven't reached a level on Discs' where I use the push-pull functions, but it's only a matter of time. The other thing about this cab, the menu's are really loud, and the fully assembled cab is VERY heavy, unlike my first gen units that I can move around without assistance. Thanks again for the great review, we'll see you on your next Monday eve live-chat.
Tron was my first and still only A1U cabinet. I really love it and had nostalgia for it. It would have put me over the top to have GORF on it too. I have modded it with a digital picture frame in the top for the mcp but also included movie clips of all the action scenes. I had lighting issues and a cracked screen cover out of box but they have resolved them. No control issues so far. I am up there in the top 25 somewhere for arcade scoring. I’m working thru some later game light cycle consistency atm. Great review! The front panel is a barren wasteland that needed something for $700
Bummer to hear that you don't get taunted in Discs of Tron. I loved/hated that -- that taunting always made me come back for more. Thanks for this review. :D
Thanks for doing this review. I personally would love to get the 1Up Tron, but the cost, the unforeseen maintenance issues, and installing more authetic parts really turns me off.
I just picked one up at Goodwill today for 330 out the door NIB. Hopefully it works but it looks like it might be worth the gamble and it will be fun to build.
The only way humanly possible that I would even consider picking this Cabinet up is if it was 399 or 499 I will not pay a penny more for it with all the negative reviews on the flight stick that I have seen. Other than that it is a spectacularly beautiful cabinet with all the special effects and the blacklight and all the reflective paint and it's very flashy and nice looking very retro very '80s but still that's not going to make me spend close to $800 on this machine nope.
Yeah - I mean, I would pay the $700, even though it's overpriced, just to have "Tron" in my apartment - but the fact that there are SOOOO many reviews about the joysticks on this one falling apart almost immediately makes me really reticent to get it. Some seem to work fine and others either have non-working triggers or just break and it seems like a crap shoot - and for that price, it shouldn't be.
I’ve had mine for a little over a month now Really enjoying it Just realized my spinner up down function wasn’t working because it took me that long to get up to the levels of Dot Just got new one in mail Hopefully this one works No issues with anything else Tron stick a bit squeaky I added coin door and digital screen And some extra lighting Actually did have to raise it a bit At 6feet tall the second screen was not visible for me at the current height Will eventually post a video
This was a cab I was I had been waiting for, for a very long time. Sadly, a medical disaster ate into the arcade fund, and I was never able to pick this cab up. It's to bad A1up did not emulate the city backdrop that appears in the real Discs of Tron. Could've been done in software, but in the real cab, was a cardboard graphic which was lit by a white UV lamp, on cue, and reflected through a half mirrored glass, in front of the screen. As for the lack of the talking, you're right. It was only on a special board which was only found on the environmental version, and today, costs nearly as much a grand to get hold of one. I've had the pleasure of playing both Tron, and environmental (booth) Discs of Tron, back in the early 80s. Glad you were able to get the stick issue resolved. If I ever find one of these, I'll definitely pick up the GRS flight stick, and buy an encoder from A1up, if still available. Thanks for the video.
Just a curious question. Was wondering if you know if they all come standard with the 5 light ups, the riser and the stool. Some places advertise it that way then others are only showing the game with no bar stool and it doesn't look lit up.
The games themselves are definitely an acquired taste and are not going to be everyones 'cup of tea'. Having the proper controls for these games are essential I think. This truly is a stunning looking cabinet. Unfortuneately, like Star Wars, doesn't look like it is going to make it to the land of Oz. The local distributor has recently listed the newer Pacman 12-in-1 legacy series, which is tempting, we shall have to see. I do like my original cabs, but maintaining them seems to beyond my time available at the moment, so I might let a couple go and replace with a couple of Arcade 1 UP cabs.
While I would LOVE to get this, I keep reading reviews about the joysticks on their "Tron" cabinet breaking almost immediately or very soon after a few games or the trigger not working, the game being glitchy, the cabinet stickers poorly applied, with air lines and bubbles, etc. - and it being incredibly hard to get any response for replacements from the company. So while I'm dying to get it, I'm worried about getting it and the thing breaking soon after. It's just review after review of people who end up just using it as furniture, because it can't be played.
i dont hv any arcade machines but i really want this as im a huge tron fan and ive been curious since sites like target and gamestop discount the arcade every now and then. lowest ive seen is $500 usd so im not sure if i shld order it
Hi Michael, I just ordered this cabinet from our local The Brick here in Newfoundland. Should be here in NL in 2 weeks. How is yours holding up? This is my first Arcade 1up machine. I do own a real pinball machine - Stern Ironman
Do yourself a favor (if you already haven't) and replace the trigger switch with something that isn't so hard to engage. I used a 20g micro switch. You can also add a collar to the base of the stick to improve durability.
