Avalon Better Than Lexus ES 350? | 2016 Avalon Review

  • The Avalon is a superb vehicle. Big, comfy, reliable, and a great powertrain. The ES 350 is still a far more refined product with superior interior design and materials. ES is also quieter and a much smoother ride.

This was the best looking avalon Toyota ever made I own one and I was thinking about trading it in for a 2019 which is hideous. Love this car the gas mileage in unbelievable. Cross country trip. 4 states 2.5 weeks on the road $250 is what it cost me for gas.

I've seen dash computer MPG readings as high as slightly over 44 MPG on my 2016 XLE Hybrid. I'm sure the six is better to drive though; my neighbor has a Limited with that motor and swears by the smooth power. It's a great car although I'd think the extra cost of the Lexus ES brings more refinement and slightly more luxury inside.

I drove both vehicles the same day. Both were 2018 models and the Lexus had 38,000 more miles on it. Both were in great shape and the Lexus is by far the better car. Nicer looking, nicer fit and finish and way more comfortable. The Lexus cost was around 1500 more. The only thing I liked about the Avalon was it was a little longer so you have more room in the backseat.

This seems like the Avalon Touring model is the best option if I decide not to pay extra for the Limited trim. Thanks for this video. Very helpful as I've been looking at these models, particularly 2015 and 2016. I'm actually amazed that the 2016 Touring model is much cheaper used than I would have thought in March 2019. Any idea why?

I'm the right one to answer any comparison questions between the Avalon and the lexus es350. I had a 2013 Avalon limited and it was loaded with features most es don't have and acceleration was great. My main issue was hard suspensions even in the comfort echo mode in the limited. Then I drove the es350 2016 and there was a very felt difference. The lexus was quite and the suspension was softer. The steering was buttery and softer as well. The screen was bigger and better. Es350 has a few trim levels but not easy to figure out which is which. The Avalon is ever slightly bigger and the limited is loaded. I traded the 2013 Avalon for 2015 Lexus es350 and the lexus is quieter and smoother in many ways, but the bad thing about the lexus is that the extended driver seat and the interactive cruise only offered in the ultra luxury version which has the panoramic roof. I have the second highest trim level of the es and it doesn't have those feature. Many don't even have a GPS. So my opinion comparing those 2 cars is that the es is a definitely better ride but have to pay much more to get all the features that the Avalon limited has.

Correct, the 2013 -2015 Avalon has a stiffer suspension to try and make it sporty to appeal to younger buyers. That's didn't work.
All it did was make it ride hard with surprising impact harshness. It's basically the wrong suspension rate for the frame stiiffness and sound proofing which tends to resonate and hit bumps much harder. KaWhump!.. wow. bad.
As a result 2013 -2015 Avalons had far more road noise (impact harshness) than an average sedan. Even a newer Ford F150 truck is much quieter than a 2013 - 2015 Avalon including the Avalon Limited.
Earlier Avalons from 2005 -2012 rode very smooth and are extremely quiet.
Much quieter than 2013-2015 models - except for the Touring edition with a stiff suspension and low profile tires that hit bumps pretty hard.
In 2016 they fixed the stiff ride and got noise levels back to pretty good.
Some Lexus ES350 of those same years had the same issue.
I was surprised my older 2006 Avalon Limited was much quieter than a 2015 Lexus ES350 or 2015 Avalon.
Designers test cars in summer on butter smooth roads, but up in snow country that's pointless where we have serious potholes and frost cracks every few feet to deal with.
Using a calibrated SPL sound meter with data exporting I found that the 2013 - 15 Avalon is literally 2x louder on the freeway than the earlier models or 2016+ models.
It's easy to see the results on exported data charts with frequency and noise levels vs mph for each car.
Cars could be amazingly quiet; but with limitations in cost vs materials and weight vs sporty handling and extra road noise, they usually they pick sporty handling no matter how it rides.
If designers cared about mpg and ride quality instead of looks they'd use 15" rims with reasonable width tires that have some sidewall. Cars would gain 2mpg for free, cost less and ride quieter due to less un-sprung weight at the wheel and lower reciprocating mass.
      That's why 1990 - 2000 Camry rode so nice, on 14 and 15" rims.
Try to find that these days.

I had all the cars you mentioned plus my current 2016 es350 ultra luxury with the driver extension cussion. Here are some more things I noticed:
*2006-2012 avalon are amazing, especially 2011 and 2012. The size, the smooth cushiony ride, the rear recling seat.. All amazing.
*es350 has good suspensions but the ultra luxury I have come with 18" wheels which looks good but gives you a less quiet and less smooth ride unfortunately.
*I hated the touch heptic buttons on the 2013 avalon. Always touched them by accident when I tried to reach for something else in that area.

As mentioned there is approximately a $5,000 difference in the cars. I am confused though because you said you would choose the Avalon with the touring package which is a hefty upgraded package starting at close to $43,000. If you are going to upgrade you do realize you have close the gap in price and you could spend that money on the Lexus is 350. If the budget you are going to spend is 43,000 -$45,000 anyway, you could compare an Avalon at that price to a Lexus ES 350 at that same price. So the question is now why at the budget you have chosen would you buy a Avalon over a Lexus. There is no reason to go for the lesser quality and interior anymore.

    • @8corymix8
      @8corymix8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The Avalon lesser quality than a Lexus? Lol
      They're both Toyota's.
Some people prefer the interior on the Avalon. It hardly takes a back seat to the Lexus. Depends on what you're looking for. Decked out Avalon Limited Hybrid is around 44k. Lexus is thousands more than that
