We begin our adventure in the hangar deck, where we explore exhibits filled with military and NASA artifacts, detailing the Intrepid’s history from World War II to the Space Age. We visit the hurricane deck, where we see the massive chains and structures that stabilized the ship during storms.This deck also features interactive exhibits, including a flight simulator and hands-on displays that bring naval aviation to life. We walk through the sleeping quarters, getting a feel for how sailors lived aboard the ship, and see the battle command center, where critical missions were planned.
Outside, we check out the British Airways Concorde, one of the fastest commercial jets ever built, and the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home to Enterprise, NASA’s first space shuttle.
Next, we make our way to the flight deck, home to an incredible collection of aircraft, including fighter jets, helicopters, and the legendary Lockheed A-12 Blackbird.
We then head up to the navigation deck, where we meet Gene Austin, a veteran who served aboard the USS Intrepid. He shares insights about life on the ship, and we get a close-up look at the control room and navigational instruments that guided the aircraft carrier through missions.
Finally, we end our day by stepping aboard the USS Growler, the only nuclear missile submarine open for tours in the U.S.! Walking through its tight corridors, control center, and missile launch room, we get a firsthand experience of what life was like for the submarine’s crew.
Our trip was inspired by watching the movie Greyhound with Tom Hanks and the Battle of the Atlantic. This really got us excited to see a warship that survived kamazie missions!
