I was in the Navy from 1965 to 1968 and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. I dated a young sailor from the Intrepid and so I spent alot of time on the ship. Watching the video, brought back lots of memories! Thank you for that! I had a few meals in the crews mess. Food wasn't too bad, actually! Not Mom's cooking, but palatable!. This was a great video!!! Truly enjoyed it!
Wow - that's a great story! I'm glad this brought back some memories for you. It was fascinating talking to some of the vets on the ship about their stories, and learn some of the history of the ship. I'm always interested in some of the shows that detail the daily operations of various types of ships in the Navy.
Went there today and I was blown away! I actually was very emotional because it felt like I was in the 1940’s - 1950’s! So monumental and seeing that my black ancestors operated and serviced this ship!
What a forgotten NY experience. I lived there 10 years ago, and i found the intrepid in a ussual walk. Since i saw i felt in love. Everytime i go come back to NY (i'm from Spain) i visit it.
Beautiful ship. I visited her this. Past December. She's mighty impressive, and we'll designed and built. We're so ahead of our time during her Era. And one thing, pausing the video to check out the Thanksgiving meal, I'll tell you, I'd of rather had my dinner on board with those well deserving sailors, than eat at a 5 star restaurant with famous people. That menu looks delicious. The Navy does everything right.
The Blu Angels aircraft is a Grumman F-11 TIGER. The F-8 is the CRUSADER, an entirely different aircraft. I wish I had a photo of an F-8 Crusader to post. Look up the Crusader if you're curious.
During the time of Gemini 3 recovery I was A photographer assigned to one of the squadrons that deployed on the Intrepid and I was TAD to the photo lab . I had the honor of participating in some of the photography of the Gemini recovery. That was one of the highlights of my short Navy career. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Cool ship, just wish that you could see more of the lower decks, like on the preserved battleships around the country, such as the New Jersey. I would find it really cool to see more stuff that wasn’t associated with aircraft, maybe the fire control for the secondary guns, turbine rooms, or ammunition rooms for the AA guns.
Definitely saw a lot more of the North Carolina (BB-55) when I toured through her a couple of years ago, including engine spaces, and the guns. I believe I saw more of another carrier or two, as well. Was surprised there wasn't more of the Intrepid available to tour.
Thanks for your service! I'm sure you have some interesting stories. I know life aboard the ships is filled with crazy moments. Definitely worth checking out this one. Each of these has their own personality, so to speak.
Can't argue with you. I am curious though, with other museum ships, have you encountered any that were particularly well shown/preserved better than others? In my own experiences, the battleships seem better preserved to their operating days than some of the carriers.
I was a Sea Cadet in the `70`s and went aboard Intrepid while in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, she was pretty much empty then, glad they saved her for a museum ship.
My family lived on 63rd & Dicks Avenue in Southwest Philly throughout the 70's. Right next door to Mike's Gulf service station. What a great place to grow up as a kid! My dad was stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Base and would take us kids along once in awhile. Or we'd go to the base PX store with mom. I remember going aboard the Intrepid when she was there in Philly. Also got to watch my dad test ejection seats affixed to an elevated rail system that measured how high he went, then slowly let him down. Pretty cool stuff. My mom still has his scrap book of pictures taken while he was doing things like that. Nice to see the Intrepid is still a museum. Thanks for the video tour!
Pretty cool. It's amazing how big an aircraft carrier is when you stop to think of all the planes and equipment it holds along with a few thousand crew. We visited the museum at the Pensa Cola Naval Air station a few years ago. We spent just about the whole day there exploring. I hope someday in your travels you get a chance to go there. I think you would be impressed.
Today I visited it outside and took a lot of pictures of it... It is not as big as I expected but it is still amazing. I love to watch your video so I can get some more detailed information about this ship inside.
Thanks for watching! Love visiting every single one of these ships, and checking out their "personalities" inside. Wish there was more of the ship available to tour.
I love the Use Intrepid; is very close to my Mather's house; in 42 between 11 and 12. we can see it from the top of the building. I have a picture of it
Thanks so much, Fernando! Glad you liked the video. I understand exactly what you're talking about when you describe your fondness for the Intrepid. Hope you get back there ASAP to see it again.
On the USS Hornet museum in Alameda, CA, you can spend the night on the ship and sleep in the sailors bunks. It costs $100.00 bucks per person, they feed you dinner, they take you on a ghost tour, then turn you loose afterward, albeit, you have to stay on the hanger deck floor and floor just beneath it, but the entire length of the ship, to explore and ghost hunt the entire night. Then in the morning, you get a complimentary breakfast. After putting your sleeping bags back in your vehicle, you can again reboard the ship and take the time to explore the ship during the daylight time. Very fun thing to do if you're ever in the San Francisco Bay area.
I've heard about sleepovers on a few ships out there, but mostly for kids. I would love to do one like you describe. Fascinating vessels and history on these ships!
@@mrcoaster1: The Hornet does have other nights for kids, but also some for adults. It was pretty cool. Pretty creepy at night though. They turn on these red lights that are down low toward the floor, so you can see in the dark, then turn off all of the white lights. When you walk through the corridors/hallways at night alone, all you can hear is the humming from the electricity flowing through the electrical panels throughout the ship and when you walk alone in the late night, you feel like you're being watched. My team I had taken on the first trip, I had a skeptic in our group. We went into the torpedo storage room and you can see down three decks from above where there are still torpedoes stored in the racks. We took out our phone cameras and recorded with the night vision lights and caught a round ball of light fly through the wall and pass underneath us on the deck below through the otherside wall. When we played the video back, he couldn't explain it. We couldn't see it with our eyes, but the camera and night vision lights caught it. We also caught audio of some young man talking that we didn't hear in the quiet when I recorded with my night vision camcorder. It's very clear when I played it back and said, "Nice going! Now she's upset with you." We never heard that when I recordered it. Lots of other people in the groups caught audio of voices when they played them back on their audio recorders. Really is weird.
I went to the Intrepid Museum in 2012 and again in 2018. The first time was right after they acquired the Space Shuttle. And I got a special experience because there was a new book for sale about the famous Black Sheep Squadron and the author was doing a book signing that day.
I miss 😢 U.S.S.INTREPID I Remember back 1982 U.S.S.INTREPID First Come New York city I was Living Flatbush Brooklyn Saw 👀 her Pass by Lady Library I love ❤️ New York 😢
I actually have a coin, and real piece of wood from the original ship. With the authenticity note! My great grandfather was some of the first to see her sail and he apparently fell off the ship. But all in all he was a great guy!
Thanks for the great video. I have been to the Intrepid a few times and always a good experience. I also did the tour of the Growler sub, destroyer Edson and the SST. I have to go back to see the shuttle. Kind of pricey though
Woooow! Thank You! Very Well Organized And Presented! Your coverage, filming and attention to detail was Great! Really brought back GOOD Memories. God Bless. Darth Airborne Nobody 55’ NYC
I visited the intrepid five times in the 90s before 9/11 and what you're seeing now is nothing like what you was beforehand a lot of the ship was still closed off due to safety concerns Flagstaff was open hanger deck was open you had a walkway back to one of the cafeterias but it was under construction looked at a room going back out and that room was a mess and you couldn't get in do the safety yeah the intrepid was stuck in the Hudson River mud I took him I think two tries to get her out I used to visit her every year for fleet week in the night 1990s 96 to 98 at that time I lived in Mohegan lake New York and I took the train from Croton Harmon train station to Grand Central station then walk across town to the intrepid and space museum one thing this guy mentioned didn't mention was the lighthouse ship they had there back in the 90s
Thanks for the info! Wish I could have visited when more of it was open like you mentioned. I've toured a couple of other carriers, and been able to see some of thse spaces, but I like to see as much as I can of all of them. They each have their own unique personalities, and features that crop up over their lifetimes.
Been on board of her 3 or 4 times now my Mom retired from the Foundation that owns her and now my son works for the same foundation not because of my Mom my son was born and raised in the same area as the Foundations headquarters and they happened to need what my Son had experience in ot was just a freak of luck his Grandmother worked there years earlier

As a wheelchair user, who has been waiting to visit the Intrepid, thanks for adding "an elevator is available."

Excellent tour. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Found the ship fascinating, myself.
Former flight deck crew,1967,good video takes me back many years . Wish there wasn't so much background noise.❤

Beeindruckend - eins meiner nächsten Ziele zur Besichtigung wenn ich denn mal da bin! I Love it 👍
I loved Pier 84 and the USS Intrepid over the weekend.
So much history here, and having the Concorde and Enterprise there is a nice bonus
I served on this ship from 1964 to 1967. I need to go to New York and check this out. I think the one in Charleston is the USS Wisconsin.
Thanks for your service! I'm sure you have some interesting stories. I know life aboard the ships is filled with crazy moments. Definitely worth checking out this one. Each of these has their own personality, so to speak.
I served on the USS Intrepid, and decommissioned it. This video showed me what a tourist trap it is now. Nothing reminded me of the ship I was on.

As an Patriot and former reg. ARMY. I appreciate the Intro music. Awesome.
There is a reason why America is the leading country in the world. It is because of our ingenuity and Patiotisim. Never Forget .

I have not been to the PCNA yet (been in the area before though). I will put it on the list. These ships are amazing!

Would have loved that. Loved the Black Sheep squadron, and read Pappy Boyington’s biography long ago.
I was there last week. Didn’t see the elevator.
But I did see Enterprise space shuttle.
So cool to see the shuttle there. Still fascinated by those amazing craft.
Thank you for posting this. I visited Intrepid in Jan 2015. The cafe wasn't open then.

Thanks so much! I'm fascinated by history, and these ships. Love it when others enjoy the experience, too.
bellisima esperienza!
I am the person who fabricated all those tubular vertical posts with the angled top, that surrounds the displays.
That's pretty cool! Fascinated by the ship, and even the behind the scenes stuff to turn it into a museum.
Thanks for the great video. I have been to the Intrepid a few times and always a good experience. I also did the tour of the Growler sub, destroyer Edson and the SST. I have to go back to see the shuttle. Kind of pricey though
Glad you enjoyed it! Love the history of the ship, and the aircraft here.
They should have gift shop onboard.
I was on the ship
It is very big and and long
The steps are step
But on the way down
Take slow steps
And hold on to the rails very tight.
Good advice - thanks for watching!
Woooow! Thank You! Very Well Organized And Presented! Your coverage, filming and attention to detail was Great! Really brought back GOOD Memories. God Bless. Darth Airborne Nobody 55’ NYC
My dad served on the INtrepid.
I'm going in abt 2 weeks
Have a great time! Fascinating to see the history, and everything there.
Needs some waterline maintenance. Prevents sinking. ..... Just my thoughts
When I was there, they were definitely doing some maintenance/upgrades in a few areas. Will be harder to draw crowds if it sinks, for sure.
Are they nuts? Those prices to tour the ship and Concorde?

Looks nothing like it did in 95 its a shame they added all the extra modernization
In some ways, I like when things get modernized, but it really does also take something away, too. Thanks for watching.
