    Trauma is very common. But despite how common it is, trauma treatment is complicated, and complex trauma, stemming from years of abuse, really impacts the brain in long-lasting ways. So I’m not going to pretend that I can just teach you how to fix it in one short video. But we can break trauma treatment down into practical steps. It’s not that hard to learn how to release trauma in the body. So let’s talk about that.
    In my previous video I talked about how trauma gets trapped in the body- the FFF response gets kicked on over and over, it doesn’t get resolved, and it become habitual, essentially a muscle memory that turns on that physiological response. Adrenaline and cortisol flood the body, the pupils narrow, the muscles tense, the heart and lungs pump faster, the immune system and digestion turn off.
    When it comes to trauma, our body is not only reacting to the present moment's sense of danger or safety, but the memory of past danger that has basically been stored in our nervous system. This activated, stressed-out, hypervigilant response becomes habitual, and when it’s chronic, the toxic stress harms your body and makes it difficult to function mentally and emotionally.

    I teared up when you started talking about how Mary's husband would come in and support her during sessions and look her into the eyes and hold her and cry with her. Oh my Gosh it just stirred so much emotion is me. I'm glad she has that. I want that. I want everyone to have that.

      @Christian Di Fonso there’s definitely ways to access the pain if you don’t consciously remember it. In fact most people have pushed it into the unconscious parts of their mind so you are not alone there brother. Overall though, this is where a good mentor is needed to guide you. Are you getting some support with that?

    Along with Fight, Flight and Freeze, there is the Fawn mechanism. This option is when anxiety is met with sympathizing with or becoming a servant to the threat in order to return to safety. Example: being agreeable with a narcissist as a means to surviving their manipulation, or some other form of trying to earn favor from your emotional threat.

      It helped so much to learn about fawning because that's my go to for sure and now I know when I'm tempted to fawn and can back up and choose something different.

      Thank you for pointing this out. I had a traumatic encounter with someone in which I now recognize my mechanisms were both freeze and fawn. I let this person (a narcissist) tear me down and I fawned in return (also freezing) to simply survive said encounter.

      Very interesting! I'm gonna to go see if there's any research on this. I also have experienced this as a first-hand reaction to trauma many times in my life & have seen others react in this way to. Thanks for bringing it to our attention .

    Dancing help me a lot when I lost my husband I was in so much pain
    I'd hold our 4 year old son and I'd dance with him Fast forward a few years to one summer when there was an outdoor concert and my son was now 7 ( a very quiet child normally) but all of a sudden he just started dancing in front of hundreds of people Everyone gathered around to watch this little boy all of them smiling
    I was in shock because he had never danced like that before it was brilliant
    People thought I'd taken him to dancing lessons
    No...I think by me dancing with him as a baby and toddler his body remembered the feeling. It was a beautiful moment out of a painful loss It's one tool in my tool box if life that I use

    I’ve been doing 20 minutes of yoga daily for just over a year and that has helped tremendously with releasing my trauma. I still catch myself though with my shoulders hiked up to my ears and have to force myself to let go. I think we all wish that we could just flip a switch and know that everything is going to be okay, we can relax. But instead it’s a process and a constant struggle.

      Yoga, meditation, and working out the last 3 years has brought my trauma to a halt. I have my days but as soon as i feel anything negative i make good intentions outloud, and focus on my breathing.
      Balancing my chakras, and reiki sessions help every few months also.

      If it's a depression response, grieving well can help. If it's a Shame response, sharing with someone very safe (preferably who knows how to handle their own nervous system) can be crucial to resolving it, and doing work on Self Compassion and Inner Child can help (e.g. Internal Family Systems Therapy). If it's a protective response (Armoring), it might be helpful to go into some sort of action (connecting with and acting out Flight e g. running or Fight e.g. anger release exercises involving punching and kicking or twisting a towel and growling) to remind your nervous system that you are able to get away from danger or fight it. The main therapy that works with this are Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, but so does Somatic Experiencing. The latter works with building tolerance for painful emotions, and can be done as meditation. Those therapies are especially helpful for people who go to a bad place when they try to meditate. And of course yoga and meditation can help resolve trauma!

    I've been in therapy for almost 20 years. In and out of hospitals all the time. Getting jobs and losing them. Finding new relationships and destroying them. Never getting better, always just turning in circles in my personal hellhole. Now I found you and I finally have the feeling that something is changing. I understand myself better.       Morgan, n life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in school, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

    Hello. I just wanted to say that I started watching you 8 months ago having suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and now I’m not. Your videos weren’t magical changing, but the magic was there and I took it and applied it. I wrote down a full notebook of notes of the whole series about anxiety and I started applying them in my life, from facing perceived threats to dealing with panic attacks. I can’t believe you have made all this and I can’t believe I was able to heal and find remedy through you. After that I only had 2 months of therapy with an actual therapist to go through any left residue I still had. I am so grateful for this healing journey that started with and because you.

    I’m realizing there is so much trauma trapped inside me. I’ve learned to somehow “live” with trauma, but it’s still there. As I’ve gotten older, I know I’m no longer living, just surviving. Barely.

    ‘Her childhood was difficult’… Really??!! That’s not ‘difficult’, that’s extreme cruelty, that’s criminal abuse, that’s psychological murder. We need to start calling these situations what they are, and we need to acknowledge them in order to address and heal them.

    It's incredible my body has intuitevely been doing things to regain my nervous systems safety. I tell myself I'm safe, I get active, I do tap work (tapping my chest slowly to slow my heart rate), breathwork, self massage on head, shoulders, and back, grounding, meditation, playing guitar, singing, drawing, writing, and connecting with others to let my body learn it's okay to trust. I love my body so much.

    Thank you Emma. Your videos are so helpful. I grew up in an abusive home - my Father was a narcissist. My Mother was his enabling co-dependent. I left home at 16 and after a series of failed relationships, I ended up marrying a toxic covert narcissist - long story cut short. 18 months ago I escaped the toxic covert narcissist (aged 48) and have learnt so much about myself and how I fell prey to a narcissist. I have so much trapped trauma.

    I've been tense all my life and now I have chronic gastritis. I can't afford therapy, and I've tried TRT exercises. I need to relax. I'll stay tuned.

      Sure Emma will have an idea to help. Meantime, breathe using your Belly Button, (rising your diaphragm,) breathe in, your BB rises, breathe out, BB falls...and not your via chest !
      Oh, re gastritis, Cinnamon, is a great calmer re gastric juices (belly ache.)
      Still get input from a Health professional, re Antacids/ Meds. Hope this helps. 🤗

      I totally agree with you. Still, there is a good percentage of people who don't need this because they had a safe youth where they teached themselves all these things by playing with their peers. If you didn't had a playful youth, you missed critical skills to process emotions. The youth is full of critical periods where we humans are most receivable to learn specific skills. I hope I dont bother you with this comment. I am a biology teacher and I am stuck at home trying to be helpfull. Cheers from another Dutchie!

    This is perfect for me, and I finally hear someone who gets me. I've neen hypervigilant, anxious, figety, and unable to look anyone in the eyes for 60 years. Any therapist (and most friends) say I'm depressed and want to push meds on me. I know that's not what I need. With this video, I feel heard and have tools.

      But the key isn't to make a vow. The key is to follow Emma's advice so we learn to do a better job of managing our lives. At that point we are more capable of being more loving.

      That's not how the vagus nerve works. Healing is daily practice that calms your vagus nerve. It's not a vow, it's an awareness + the daily choice to care for your nervous system with various techniques and behaviours and allowing your body to release your trauma and everyday wounds.

      I understand what you mean and this might seem too pedantic, so pardon me for that. But to people with deep trauma (or even without), having these expectations - that we shouldn't inflict pain and suffering on ourselves, and why are we still doing it in spite of our best efforts to stop - is exactly what's getting in our way of healing. If we can drop the expectations, we'll move on from the guilt and shame more easily, so the healing can take place

    Letting out my true emotions helped me infinitely more than anything else. Especially directly towards the people who wronged me, mainly my mom. Suppressing the emotions for yrs caused many health issues but when I finally let out my “bad” emotions that we’re taught is wrong to show, it flowed out of my body. Remember, children don’t hold in emotions, because that’s unnatural. I had tons of anger, rage, anxiety, sadness, & heartbreak pent up. Now I’m a free bird & my physical body is healing. Learning to feel my emotions on the spot and not suppress them is working wonders! And I must say that suppressing anger for a while will make it stronger, when you finally boil over you risk doing much worse than if you’d have just let it out consistently on the spot and not held it in repeatedly. All of the zen Buddha, mirror stuff to just relax and “let go” never worked, just made things way worse bc all of those techniques were not truly handling the problem. More like suppressing it further, running from it all. Trust me I tried literally everything I could. Just my thoughts.

    I’m stuck in constant fight of flight mode since a year back now, due to some hospital trauma I experienced. My GP says I’m too tensed, anxious and exhausted to be able to start cognitive therapy and when they sent me to a psychiatrist she told me I’m not bad enough to get any help from them either. So I’m stuck in the middle, mentally and emotionally exhausted. Nothing is funny. Everything seems like shores, I just want to escape. So thank you for this video. ❤️

      Get a second opinion. They are wrong and the way you feel is real and deserves to be healed

      Seconding getting a second opinion. Also, you can start talk therapy on your own. The cost depends on different factors and you could do it in-person or online. That could be a helpful place to begin until you can get the kind of therapy you need.

Just becuse I can express how I feel and I’m not the kind of person to throw a fit or have a full breakdown in front of them, I’m supposed to be able to fix it myself?! 🙄 She said that if I’d had a history with depression and other traumas I’d recieve help. Well, thanks for that - I’m sorry I had a decent life before this. Sigh. Anyways - thanks for responding. And keep fighting! ❤️

      @Paul Gauthier n life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in school, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

    I grew up in an abusive home as well. Thank-you for sharing Mary’s story. I was physically abused also but the emotional abuse never stopped from my family they are stilll the same to this day. I know what you mean the mirror excercises don’t work for me either. Thank-you for this video.i agree trauma is complicated, I have ptsd and anxiety and it has been a lot of therapists. It’s hard for me to find a therapist that knows how to deal with trauma. I have been doing yoga and that helps. One thing I find difficult now is I have a crazy neighbor above me who throws things around in his apartment and stomps around and it’s very disruptive.

      I’ve had similar experiences with neighbors, have you considered cleansing the energy of your space?
      Crystals or white sage are two examples.

      I Recognize myself so much in your story. Even the noisy neighbor. I am diagnosed with complex ptsd but nothing helped me cope so far. When I am in perceived danger my body gets ill literally and so I can not function anymore. I hope to find relieve in alternative therapie.

      @@leeannurban7364 I honestly don't mean to be 'judgemental' but I know of people who are involved in this 'cleansing the energy' stuff and please don't be offended by my 'bias' but yes, it is not as safe and innocent as many would like to believe. You can totally disregard my concern of course. I do not mean to upset anyone at all, for real :-)

    Yes, I have most certainly experienced that catatonic state that goes along with being a trauma survivor. Still working through it and just getting up and moving is such a hard thing! Especially being stuck indoors during a pandemic. Here's to more movement and healing in the future~

    I've been slowly feeling the pre-sensation to tearing up as I've watched some of your videos. Today with this video I actually had a tear form.     I love your videos so much. You just explained what I do and what I was doing to heal myself during the lockdown. I did all of this. I drew, sang , danced , played much exercised... Cried, felt my feelings. This was how i coped with the extreme forced solitude that made me face myself during the first couple of years of my separation and dealing with the multi-layered trauma of lockdown. This is why I continue to tap into my creative side and why when i moved into my own place, i need to make it a safety sanctuary. Thank you for your beautiful videos.

    Your videos are amazing, it’s as if you are describing me in each video! I’m 40 years old and have dealt with compounding traumas that started at about the age of two. I started therapy last year and have learned sooo much about myself. I never realized how bad I was and that my way of thinking was not the normal. One of the biggest things that have been able to help me was my service dog. I’m stuck in the sympathetic state, so my service dog does deep pressure therapy with me, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It’s amazing! I feel calm and relaxed, it’s a feeling I haven’t felt very often in my life.

    most therapists describe the problem of stress and anxiety but I never heard anyone talk about actual practical solutions to deal with it
    especially when it's trapped in the body for a long time
    so this was eye opening

    3.5 hours to get through a 12 minute video. It has been on my feed for a week, took me that long to stop avoiding it. Taking other stuff off the agenda for today for getting myself through this video.
    I was fortunate to have some stabilizing factors outside my family growing up and I was lucky enough to enjoy them when they were there. I had a grandmother, not related to me that informally adopted me and was present in my life until I was 11 when she past away. I also had a friend growing up that I was always over at until I was eighteen.
    I was also very physically active as a child. These were how I dealt with home.
    What I stayed away from at home, several abusive people , I am the youngest. Several other issues of abuse and neglect on several levels, in an age when you didn't tell anyone. My mother compounded the situation because she could not/would not get a long with anyone.
    Recognizing the blessings I did have was a coping strategy I came by naturally, fortunately. It does not stop the flight response I still have but grateful this kept coming up on the feed till I watched it.

    Thank you for very concrete and doable advices. Very very helpful teachings. You have a very good balance between the theoretical causes for the issues and the actual treatment to help resolve the issues. Just watching these 3 videos gave me more knowledge than years of talks with various psychologist.
    Also your physiological, balanced and grounded way of explaining the issues gives a very strong feeling of hope, that the issues can be resolved or at least managed in a degree that will make the issues very small, to an extend that will make a happy and normal life possible.

I learned a related tool that helps me and others who may not have people around from whom to receive and give healthy hugs. That is, we can give ourselves a hug! Giving precious self a hug is nothing to be embarrassed about - just an honest way to give ourselves the love and appreciation we need and deserve and may not have had access to at crucial times of our lives. Like each of the practices in this video, self-hugs shift me into my parasympathetic mode.

    Thank you so much! I'm in a situation where therapy isn't an option right now. I need it but I can't right now. So I've tried to find any kind of self help, therapy videos online. Most of them is just talking a lot about the issue (in my case narcissistic abuse), while it helps to process it somewhat I was still lacking the information on how to break the state my body is in. Your video already did a lot. Now I'll come back to it many times, to remind myself of these exercises etc. So thank so you so much!

    You just described what just happened with a girlfriend who is losing her home. I am that one who makes others feel safe. I listened, spoke in a calm voice, making eye contact & taking deep breaths. Then we reframed the move she will have to make as potentially a positive one.

    I have had a lot of therapists. But one tried to date me and told me about his relationship w/his best friend's wife- and another one was writing on a legal pad ( to hide his texting )while I was explaining things to him and another one was a bit abusive. I am still trying again but therapists can also be scary for me. You seem amazing and I'd trust you ! Thank you! I am doing the tapping stuff.

    I've recently tried qigong and find it interesting that some of the activities in qigong are also helpful in exiting the freeze response and getting in touch with your body. Tapping, patting and stroking different parts of the body are routinely done in qigong, so are slow and deep breathing.

      yes, the beginning of 2020 i had no idea how to deal with my own severe anxiety and the lockdowns, and later to come people being vicious about masks - my anxiety got so bad i was losing control of my body. i started doing Qi Gong with Kseniya - she is lovely. th-cam.com/video/uscTuka8TOY/w-d-xo.html A year later when i had an accident and messed up my leg - still suffering that i'm doing this again

    When reacting to a traumatic event, our reaction is not strictly incumbent to that specific event but also to the history of traumatic reaction that we've experienced. I'm paraphrasing a point made in this video but I think it's really important. The historical makeup that our brains can project and react to a current 'stressful' event is usually unhelpful. But these neural pathways can actually be unwired and rewired to build new and better ones! That provides so much hope for the future.
    Also, 'neuroception' is a new concept for me. I like it. It does feel like my brain is usually aware of my nervous system state.

    When frozen/shut down, reconnect with body with movement, notice safety in the environment
    When fight/flight, grounding slow movements (slow breathing, yawning, stretching, hold heavy object) or expressive movements: tapping, dance, yell.
    When feeling safe, connected, process past. Supportive connections help.
    Restore safety:
    1. Perceived safety - in the present moment I am safe
    2. Connect with body
    3 Take body through cycles
    4. Soothe the body
    5. Turn on parasympathetic response
    6. Connect with others - eye contact, hugs, listening to voice, seeing an expressive face, emotional intimacy, sexual intimacy
    7. Cognitive processing of trauma

    I was looking for a video on how to really connect to my feelings and let them out because i felt trapped in them. I started clapping and moving and after 2 sec i started crying and i needed that sooo much. Thank you very much for this SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE trick and srry for my bad english

    Thats some really useful insights
    The sense of percieved safety is so cruical. I think there are lot of things that can help in reviving our brain.
    But it all starts when we finally decide that our past cant decide your future anymore. We cant change it. But we can change the future everytime. Even science is now claiming that new pathways in brain can develop ( nuroplasticity ) and we can change our route anytime. I have decided whatever the situation might be...i will always go where the joy is. May everyone find true joy in their lives.

    Hi Emma, fantastic video as always. I hope you are well. I was wondering if you would do q video on loosing parents from an early age. For me I was 4. I don't expect a personalised video but I'm honestly growing from your perspective that at the age of 37 I'm actually learning to understand myself better. It would be fab to understand what it really does to people to loose parents. I'm not mistrustful or angry (anymore) I'm insecure and hold things tight, a little too tight. And I feel like time is running out with my own children even though I don't think I will die. I suffer with bad bouts of anxiety. It comes and goes. But when it comes it debilitates me. I'm on a journey this time of going through anxiety as I'm so fed up of it haunting my life. So I'm trying to go back to the source. I've tried theapy. Cbt is OK but most of the time they just rake over things that are unfixable. I don't understand what it really meant for me loosing my parents as I don't remember even having parents. Xx

    Meditation has been a great tool to notice these energy switches and being able to actively address it with breathing techniques.
    Apollo Neuro has also been of great aid to calm the CNS paired with breathing, meditation and Yoga.

      Meditation can be a good tool but in the right usage. Meditation can trigger a trauma reaction that can cause people to
      Disassociate. The book trauma sensitive mindfulness by David treleaven explains this.

    I’m just now hearing this and it’s so good!! So fascinating listening to the changes in Mary with the physical steps you had her take, how the physical activity of those simple things brought her into her surroundings. 😮I’ve been in a long term stressful situation and recently gone through a cancer dx so trying to learn how to regulate my immune system and calm my life down as much as possible going forward. My situation has gotten better but still has allot of chaos so I want to be proactive! Your videos are incredibly insightful and helpful!! Thank you❤
