  • Ron Freeman manages to fly an impressive 347ft at an amateur flying competition in West Sussex, but is robbed of the prize money after strong winds take his glider sideways.
The Birdman event, which has been held in Worthing in West Sussex since 2008, sees daredevils dress up in costumes and attempt to fly their homemade gliders the furthest across the English Channel from Worthing pier.
Defending champion, Mr Freeman, 57, from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland sailed through the air a record breaking 347ft (106 metres) after his craft was caught by strong winds.
Unfortunately those same winds blew his glider sideways towards the beach, invalidating his attempt and meaning he missed out on £10,000 prize money for a forward flight which broke the 100 metre mark. No one on the day managed to claim the prized money.
Meanwhile less-serious competitors dressed in comedy outfits simply leapt off the pier for their chosen charities.
