I lived in Worthing for 2 years from 2017 to 2019 and before moving I was told there is nothing in Worthing. When I did live there I loved it and it grew on me. I'm visiting Worthing to meet friends this Christmas and can't wait to get back to the place where I've had lots of lovely memories. Thanks John for covering Worthing.
I'm from Portsmouth, along the coast and Worthing is one of my favourite places to visit. I just love the pier and the Art Deco buildings in the town. Thanks for a great watch John.
Well you said it was bracing John - certainly looked it!! Worthing used to be known (locally at least) as gods waiting room, due to the older population, but is certainly younger now, due to people not being able to afford the prices of Brighton further along the coast.
i think it's still in top 10 of the uk's highest average age towns at 40 something now people are even getting priced out of here and on to littlehampton/bognor
What a surprise to see you in Worthing, John! It was my home until I moved to New Zealand in 1972, and your video brought back many memories. In the 1960s I worked for several years as a photographer on the Worthing Gazette and got to know a lot of the more famous visitors and residents. I have been in Harold Pinter's home in Ambrose Place (when he was there) and met many of the actors who performed at the Connaught Theatre. (John Pertwee is one who always comes to mind, a lovely fellow with whom I enjoyed a conversation at the (terrible) Wimpy Bar across from the Pier). I lived in Bedford Row for a time, renting a whole floor of one of those once-grand houses for what would now be the price of a coffee. The Dome Cinema was always on the verge of closing, but has miraculously survived. It was popularly known at one time as the Fleapit! Broadwater, which you mentioned, now just part of Worthing, has a history of its own. My mother was born there in 1910, in South Farm Cottages, which still exist I think (certainly on my last visit some years ago). She worked at one time as a servant in Offington Hall, a very grand house which is long gone, although I believe the stables still exist and are used by a riding school. I loved the video and would happily have watched twice as much footage and I hope you might return there sometime.
I lived nearby in Sompting, but we went into Worthing every week to do our shopping. I was 11 when my family moved us to the US in 1977. I now live in Wyoming of all places.
I just escaped down here, after living in Feltham, Middlesex for 31 years - right next to Heathrow.. Believe me - You need to be Grateful that you are here.
Fascinating walkabout John; many thanks to Travis and your good self for your superb efforts. Worthing truly does appear to have retained quite a lot of its Old-world charm - may that long continue to be the case! 👍🏻
Spent a wonderful week in Worthing dog sitting for friends, in a flat in an old hotel right on the front, love Worthing & will certainly look up Travis' books. Fascinating 😊
Excellent video John and Travis. I do love Worthing, very sad to see the glorious old Debenhams building empty. Also Macari's is sadly no longer there. Look forward to your next video John 👍🏻👍🏻😁🎁🎄
I was the last person to interview Harold Pinter and Eartha Kitt on video at separate events before they died. Weirdly they died within 24 hours of each other.
There is something delightfully hypothetical about seaside resorts off season. The capricious shops are boarded up awaiting the return the next wave of tourists the necessities for survival as a town remain. No one needs a t-shirt in winter anyway.
I had a lovely couple of days in Worthing in the summer visiting Chanctonbury and Cissbury Rings. I discovered Austen’s connection with Worthing along with Harold Pinter, Percy Shelley amongst others. Great video John!
Chanctonbury Ring Forever ! Spent a day there in the early 70s, having taken some LSD, and went back after the storm of 1987 had toppled so many of the trees, to find it a much-changed but still magical place.
Mr. John Rogers enjoyed this Sunday walk dearly! So informative. Had to view it twice...love Jane Austen's writings. Thank you John & Tavis. From an old soul in Appalachian US. Looking forward to your next walk. Follow your 💙 as always. Wherever that leads. 🦋🍃🌾🌿
Well I must say the people of Worthing were very often successful in getting their way. Very interesting video John and Travis. Thanks for the walkabout.
that was just great! i really enjoy the trips putside of London - and Travis is a very good companion - haha the bit about austen's ghost was quite amusing! love from canada
Very inspiring. I've already started to watch "Wish you were here." I'm definitely going to buy Travis's books. And of course Jane Austin's last book. I so love your videos. Your presentation's are so laid back and exciting at the same time. I look forward to your travels.
Thanks for this John, I've lived near Worthing for years and didn't know much of this. Yes please continue the Quaggy walk next - that's near where I grew up! Cheers.
loved this - am a major Jane Austen fan and this was great. Am about to send it to a friend in Sydney (Summer Hill) who is a massive Austen fan! Pls keep up the great and informative and entertaining walks! ;)
That was a wonderful English experience; I felt as if I were following along with you and your guest seeing the sights and looking through the shops. Thank you.
Fantastic video, i was living in Worthing 3 years the place is absolutely marvellous I had a great time there and I miss so much this city with its unique Victorian atmosphere
Really enjoyed this. Ive lived in Worthing for 53 years and you never know whats on your doorstep. I will share this on my Facebook as I know my friends will too find it of intrest. PS: to all youtubers watching this we do have lots and lots of Sunny days thats why its called Sunny Worthing.
Another great film John. Nice to meet Travis, and to be able to explore Worthing with the two of you. As a resident of Portsmouth (ish) it came as a surprise to me to learn about it being warmer by the sea in winter - I may pop down to Southsea today to test that out! Fabulous as always John, thank you.
Beautiful video! Such a lovely spot and your guest was very informative. Please don't forget to do a walk about London during the Christmas holidays! I find myself looking forward to it already.
Good morning John. That was a little different to your usual walks. Travis was a very interesting and knowledgeable man. I've never been to Worthing, but lots of splendid buildings there.
Great video John. I lived in Worthing in the noughties but have now moved to Ford. Not the prison haha. I've learnt so many interesting facts that I never knew about the town. I always preferred it in Winter time, less people and nice bracing winds.
The club on the end of the pier was called Rutherfords. Went there a few times around the late nineties, when a good friend moved down that way. It always seemed to be lashing it down on that pier. And windy too. Although thinking about it, it might been because we’d a quite a few beers by the time we got there.
I had the pleasure to wayfare round Worthing last year. The pier was fantastic, I loved the gallery of stained glass windows sponsored by local individuals/ groups. There is also a very nice windmill on the outskirts, well worth a visit. Keep up the good work.
Lovely video John, shame I didn't bump into you around town! Come back in summer, there are some amazing walks just outside the town and around the nearby bits of the South downs!
As most enjoyable wander around Worthing with you, John, and the absolutely charming Travis. His books sound right up my alley of interest. Hints to my other half, re Christmas presents.
Love all your walks in London Town, John. They are quite profound experiences; I often feel I'm your bleedin' mucker on the actual walk with you. Broadcast magic! It's also good seeing you reaching beyond the M25 again. But I'd really love you to vlog from other parts of GB & Ireland, as yet untouched by your good self.
What a brilliant video Guys well done John and Travis excellent tour of Worthing and it’s history I can’t ever remember visiting Worthing Brighton Eastbourne yes but it’s now on my list to visit thanks for sharing guys beautiful.
I would make a point of visiting Worthing on my annual trip to visit family in the 1980s and 1990s. Love the museum, the tiny lane from Bedford Place towards the sea front with it's high flint walls and the fabulous second hand bookshops just off the pedestrian shopping street west of the pier. Hopefully you will find Worthing worth a second video!
Very interesting video - my father drove buses for Southdown in the late 50's early 60's. Then he ran the kiosk (now Malloys) on the west side of the pier.
Thanks John, seaside towns on a winters day are great and that fish and chip lunch looked amazing, as you probably remember fish and chips is not the same in Australia. Oh! for nice piece of Cod.
I really enjoyed this . Thank you . I spent time in Worthing this summer and was kind of aware that behind the hub bub their was Georgian and Regency splendour ✌️
Nice to come to the seaside with you really interesting video I saw that Sanditon drama on the television though read the book years ago… this video pulled it all together.. Thank you
I loved this John...went to Worthing in the spring...lovely to recognise bits. My brother went to Hackney Downs, so nice link there. Ive met emily lloyd a few times...so another link. Great stuff...thank you.
Wonderful! I grew up in nearby Sompting, we frequently went to Worthing to do our shopping. Moved to the US in 1977. I recall there was shop on one of the corners that roasted coffee, and I would love to breathe in the aroma as we walked past.
Some names for you. The club on the end of the pier was called Rutherfords, then Lush, then Rutherfords II before being derelict for many years and becoming and art-deco restaurant (called Perch I think). Some of the roads to the north of Broadwater are named after Sanditon. In West Worthing, the literary theme continues with roads named after Chaucer, Wordsworth, Shakespear, Browning, Shelley, Byron and Tennyson
I’ve been living and working near Worthing for the last 13yrs. Come into the town most days. But I learnt some really interesting stuff about it from this video, so thank you for it.
Been living in worthing for 5 years and only knew about half of all this information lol. Wow very interesting, will give me a whole new perspective on where i live 😊
Welcome to my home town! ❤

I like the fact that you visited Worthing on the cusp of Winter on a cold, overcast day. That added an interesting element to the ambience. Cheers.
What a surprise to see you in Worthing, John! It was my home until I moved to New Zealand in 1972, and your video brought back many memories. My mother in law RIP lived in one of the south farm road cottages .
I have fond memories of that #Wimpy. Maybe it got better after 1974?
You make Worthing seem way less boring than how I feel living here my whole life lol
no i live here too, it's still very boring.
The ultimate God's waiting room! (Born in Broadwater 1948)
I’m from littehampton be grateful for worthing there’s loads to do 🤣
I just escaped down here, after living in Feltham, Middlesex for 31 years - right next to Heathrow..

@@paulward4268 are the people nice there ?
Fascinating walkabout John; many thanks to Travis and your good self for your superb efforts. Worthing truly does appear to have retained quite a lot of its Old-world charm - may that long continue to be the case! 👍🏻
I thoroughly enjoyed this video John and Travis 🙏. How clever of you to arrange for proper British seaside weather to accompany this episode 😁👌
Spent a wonderful week in Worthing dog sitting for friends, in a flat in an old hotel right on the front, love Worthing & will certainly look up Travis' books. Fascinating 😊
Great video was wondering if you'd bump into a bald explorer while you were there but not this time great to learn more about Jane Austen
Yes me too! But he knows about this video - someone asked him!!
Excellent video John and Travis. I do love Worthing, very sad to see the glorious old Debenhams building empty.

Spooky. Must've been great to interview Pinter, Sean.
@@JohnRogersWalks If I ever get an old Sony Z1, I'll transfer the tapes and upload.
I remember Eartha Kitt being one of those 60 icons like Kathy Kirby who would make Sunday Night at the London Palladium seem so exciting.! ✌️
A pleasure to watch. Great chemistry between the two of you.
Absolutely agree .
Both knowledgeable in their own spheres .
And yet complementary of one another .
My partner and I are seriously thinking of moving to Worthing so this was especially interesting to see more around the town!
Second time I’ve watched this vid,it is so addictive, thankyou John for introducing Travis to the flock,
I always remember a postcard I saw years ago: The weather is here, wish you were beautiful.
There is something delightfully hypothetical about seaside resorts off season. The capricious shops are boarded up awaiting the return the next wave of tourists the necessities for survival as a town remain. No one needs a t-shirt in winter anyway.
Really love the seaside resorts in Winter!
There's always a 'quiet corner' of my week when I sit down and just enjoy the peace and vicarious travel with you! Such a joy. Thanks
I had a lovely couple of days in Worthing in the summer visiting Chanctonbury and Cissbury Rings. I discovered Austen’s connection with Worthing along with Harold Pinter, Percy Shelley amongst others. Great video John!

Except the clock tower of course .
And the traffic .
