I learned to drive in a '51 Commander starlight (that body style) in the early seventies.
Starter button on the dash? Blasphemy? The button under the clutch pedal should work the starter.
You normally leave the overdrive lever in for most driving conditions, and NEVER pull it out while the car is moving or you will damage the OD unit!
When the lever is in, the transmission freewheels at speeds below about 27 mph. To operate the overdrive you simply let up on the throttle for a moment, then apply normal throttle pressure. Stomping the throttle will kick it out for your passing gear.
Pulling the lever locks the overdrive out and locks the freewheel, and you generally want to park the car in reverse, as that also locks out the freewheel function and overdrive.

they added a solenoid for starting, it still retains the button under the clutch pedal.

I bought a 1952 champion 4 door beige color right out of high school (1967). Paid $100 for it. Unfortunately after nine months it left me stranded on the freeway one night so hitched a ride and never went back to the car. I told a gear-head friend it was his and mailed him the key. I never heard if he ever picked it up or not.

I drove a 52 champion, it was my first car. To know if your overdrive works you need a tachometer. Take it up to about 60 mph watch the tach, when overdrive is working it will lower the rpm’s drastically.
