    Like Titleist's T100 & T100s, these are really now just loft different clubs - and that means that most players if they just swap out their last iron for the stronger lofted P790, it will likely help their top-end gapping from falling off

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro ปีที่แล้ว

      PXG has had a ton of success with P/T and XP/P combos for this reason. It works really well because the clubs look almost the same. A P770/790 combo would work very similar to PXG.

    Seems like the decision between these two should be influenced by the gapping between the irons / wedges / hybrids or fairways. I'd like to hear your views on that. Maybe an episode on how to go about properly gapping out the entire bag. For me, when the 5 iron starts getting longer than 180 yards it starts overlapping my shortest hybrid or fairway wood. The distance difference on the 5i between the 790 and 770 seems very much in line with the loft differences. Maybe with the 790s I could drop the 5i from the bag. Is that better for an average golfer or is it better to have closer gaps in the higher lofted irons?

    @paulmcgee1867 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One reason for choosing between them must be to get close to the required distance one being shorter than the other another would be the required height that you mention and the two don’t seem to go together which creates a dilemma

    I played the 2021 P790's 3-PW for about 10 months. I really liked them but the occasional fliers and low trajectory put me in too many instances where instead of putting for birdies I was facing and up-and-down situation. Too many times I saw a well hit ball land close to the pin and then role off onto the fringe. I am now playing the P7MC's 5-PW and I absolutely love them. The feel is exhilarating and I love the sound of a solid strike. The ball flight is more to my liking with a beautiful high, soaring baby draw, and the ball lands soft and sticky. I soon realized that I was going to have to add a 4 iron so I decided to order a P770, which is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait to take it out to the range.

    Happy New Year Andy! After you banging on about 7 woods, 9 woods & hy-woods for 6 months, I bit the bullet and bought a 7 wood a couple of weeks ago. Oh my, oh my, oh my!!! First shot at the range a duff, but since that one shot, 200 yds down the middle every time. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Why the hell weren't you on about them a few years ago😛

    But here’s my question.
    Let’s say an iron model is released. Two years later, the new model is released and it’s practically the same club - but the lofts are all 1* stronger. The club manufacturer says it’s a touch more forgiving (6%, for example)…
    Does that make the new, stronger lofted irons easier, as easy or more difficult to hit than the previous?
    I bought a set of players distance irons three years ago and while I like them and have adjusted, there’s something about swinging more traditional lofted clubs that gives me my most confidence. I dunno.
    As for these irons, I got to see them in person, but didn’t try them. While they do look and feel nice (I like the stock grip), there’s something I don’t like about how thick they are front to back. Yes, they’re relatively small from heel to toe, but they’re just…bulkier or something. Thick, square topline.

    I've played the P790s last year, and have a blended set of P770 - P7MC on the way this month. I like the P790s, but the occasional flier sent some shots sailing past greens. I was shocked when I hit the MCs as well as I did, and the feel is incredible. Granted, I'll lose a little distance, but dispersion on trackman was just better, for me. I like the gap of lofts better with the MCs.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think a lot of golfers would be surprised that the MCs are not as scary as they appear visually, sometimes we are misled a little by manufacturers categorising irons by handicap

    I had the 2021 P790’s and when the 2023 Phantoms came out, I traded up for those. I’m
    Finding that I hit the 2021’s a lot better than I do the blacked out version. The weight feels way different and the strikes on the 2023’s don’t feel nearly as pure.
    I actually wish I had kept my old set and never fooled with the P790 phantoms at all

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro ปีที่แล้ว

      Kind of. The 790 retains high ball speeds on strikes above center. If you catch one high on the face out of the rough, that's when you get the moon ball flier. It's not a hollow body thing per se. Other power bats like the Cobra Forged Tec have dealt with it pretty well by keeping spin up.

    What do you mean ❓ @the average golfer
    8:36 at the top end it’s almost inseparable particularly on 5i“
    Then you said
    8:54 it’s visible difference particulary on 5i, it’s separated by 10 yards “
    So 5i is the most inseparable(8:36) or most visible difference(8:54)❓❓
    And the middle and bottom is less or more different than 5i ❓❓( 10yards)

    A question for you Andy. I Just came back to golf after a 25 year break. I am getting lessons and rapidly improving with the help of a good pro. I bought a set of game improvement irons and they are fine irons, except for the lofts. While I was away from the game it seems like manufacturers decided to take what was a 5 iron and call it the new 7 iron etc. Even as a 'beginner' I now hit my 7 iron up to 175 yards! This seems very strange to me. Spin and loft are just as useful for control for the high handicap player, especially since this is the category of player that will improve most rapidly and potentially outgrow the limitations of 'power-bats' fairly quickly. I cannot, no matter how hard I look, find a set of clubs that are marketed as 'forgiving' for the high handicapper, yet have anything close to sensible (sorry traditional :) lofts. The closest I have come is Ping who have a retro spec option on their g425 irons and even this combo I would consider on the strong side. Can you recommend any manufacturers or products for me?

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you not consider the P790’s ?

    • @Matthewlowe-tx4zc
      @Matthewlowe-tx4zc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAverageGolfer I would consider anything :) The reason I hadn't focussed on the P790 is the literature and common opinion that seems to say this club is aimed at the low-mid handicapper and again the 7 irons comes in a 30 degrees which is pretty strong.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matthewlowe-tx4zc why is loft an issue for you? Is it not better to concentrate on launch, spin and carry and discard loft as it is irrelevant in my opinion

    • @Matthewlowe-tx4zc
      @Matthewlowe-tx4zc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheAverageGolfer Nods, I don't disagree - its not loft in and of itself - it's more because more traditional lofted irons create more spin and tend to be more accurate/precise in my experience. I seem to be doing ok for distance (not that more distance is a bad thing) so I was trying to find a forgiving iron that focuses more on spin/control rather than on distance gains. I absolutely take your point though.

    • @hlf_coder6272
      @hlf_coder6272 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matthewlowe-tx4zc Why not the P770s then? The 7 iron loft on the 770 is 33 degrees, whereas it's 30.5 on the P790. Granted, even 33 is slightly stronger than lofts of 25 years ago, but it's pretty close. It's also still a forgiving iron.
      In your last comment though, you said that you want to focus more on spin and control, which frankly sounds like you should be looking more at blades. You kinda sound like you think your game isn't strong enough yet for blades, but they're definitely the clubs that are going to give you more spin and control. Just little forgiveness. Most blades are traditional lofts though. For example the MB is 34 degrees on the 7 iron

    Good video as I’m looking and having a change . I have played the the original p790s for 4 years now and play off 9 . I will get fitted but thinking a combo of the p790s 4-6 then 7-p770s (or mc7) . Worried about gapping and like a bit more loft . Could it be a good idea getting the p790s in the same weaker loft as the p770s in the longer irons ? Cheers
