Yeah, specifically I think it was just _one_ guy from Dimps who did just the daytime level design. Nighttime level design was also Sonic Team I'm pretty sure.

Same, until I got an Xbox 360 this year the Wii version is the only version of Unleashed that I had ever played. For some personal reasons I gave up on it in my childhood, then this year got back into it but that time limit challenge and some glitchy problems that my copy has have been most of the main reasons why I've never fully made it through the "Eggmanland" stage to the Dark Gaia final boss battle. I keep loosing to the timer or loosing a life instead of getting to the goal ring in time!
So I did what I could to try to play the HD version and now I understand how hard that version of Unleashed is.

NOTE: Action chains actually do serve a purpose that can contribute to your S rank! To put it simply, the higher your action chain is by the time it's completed, the more boost you can earn- which can in turn contribute to a better time.

I'm honestly happy that this version exists, my first contact with Sonic Unleashed was on the PS2 (consoles were kinda expansive here in Brazil, so the PS2 was still a popular console here for many years) and that's where I beat the game for the first time.
Some time later I saw the Wii version too and years later I was finally able to play Sonic Unleashed on the PS3 (I even got the platinum trophy) and despite loving the HD version there are still things that I think the SD version performed better, I think both versions are great, each in its own unique way.

  • @Nyaalexi
    @Nyaalexi 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Here's a fun fact, I actually started with the SD version. Took me a good while to actually play the difinitive version because it's stuck on consoles and I'm primarily a PC gamer... yeah. The SD version is pretty easy to emulate. Eggmanland is actually way easier. It's similar enough but also different enough that it keeps it interesting. The boost system definitely takes some getting used to, having also played Rush, Colors and stuff. I actually don't mind 2D in Sonic. And I also don't dislike Werehog in any way. It's different for sure, and that's why I like it. It's a fun little beat-em-up, in both versions. So yeah, this game good, no matter which version you decide to play.

  • @legoboy7107

7:30 It's actually the exact opposite, Sonic always boosts in the center of the direction the camera is facing, not where Sonic is facing (which is how the other boost games work), except in 2D or scripted cinematic moments of course. Whatever angle the camera is pointing in, Sonic will boost in the dead center of the camera, even if he was facing a completely different direction before or if the camera is currently in the middle of rotating its direction.
Also, wow, you played with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck setup? Man, I tried that once and I could not play the game like that, and it wasn't even because of motion controls for the boost, it was because other control options were more restricted or weird, like with quick stepping, it was so awkward and stuff. It's SO much better using normal controls with either a Classic Controller or Gamecube Controller, which are what I use to play the game.
And the Action Chains actually do serve a purpose, it's FAR from just a "good job" sticker. Action Chains help give you a LOT more boost, that's their whole point, to get you more boost the greater the action chain lasts, which then feeds into the S ranks being time based. That's why there's many little "paths" that are just action chains and not shortcuts, they're there so you can use them to build more boost if you need it. It creates a whole balance of "do I do this action chain that's a bit slower so I can get a lot more boost to ultimately go faster, or do I have enough boost and it's faster to just skip the chain and keep going, and if I pick the former what's the fastest way I can do this chain while getting the most boost possible" etc. It adds a lot to the routing, decision-making, and depth, and for those who play Sonic for time attack instead of score it actually gives a purpose to going out of your way to defeat enemies and do homing attack chains or light-speed dashes and stuff and makes the latter two more interesting than just mindless button-mashing just for the sake of it. Also allows Dash Panels to have more depth to them as hitting them adds to your chain too, and they can be used more as proper speed and chain boosters you have to try to hit rather than being for mindless automation you can't miss like other 3D Sonic games, especially when you boost into them which puts you into that even faster rolling state you often want to maintain as much as possible. Time attacking for this game can get pretty sick, and it's a game designed exclusively all around that time attack, rather than balancing it out with score and/or exploration like other games that dilutes the focus a bit, everything in this game is hyper-focused on getting to the end as fast as possible and nothing else. Drifting gives you boost, doing action chains gives you boost proportional to the size of your chain instead of score, collecting rings not only helps build your boost but helps you level up your meter so you can store more boost bars up to a max of 6, etc.
12:53 Some of these missions VERY MUCH DO have new level design, as in...they're just straight up more new levels, you mentioned that these later acts exist but they are grouped as part of these same seemingly mundane missions rather than as proper ranked acts; they're tied to the same Time Attack, Collect Rings, and Don't Get Hit missions, but these ones do appear to be what were originally supposed to be full Act 2s. They're unlocked however by collecting Sun and Moon medals to open doors in the Gaia Gate hubs and then completing the "zelda-dungeon-like" puzzle areas to unlock the missions. There's a Rooftop Run "collect the rings" mission that takes place in a sewer underground that's a completely new level, and also the last Time Attack mission in Rooftop Run, while mostly identical to the normal main act, replaces that final flat chase stretch at the end with a completely new and unique 2D section that involves wall-jumps, loops, multiple paths, etc., that's really cool. Dragon Road's "Don't get hurt" and last "Time Attack" missions are both pieces of another completely original level nothing like the main act, complete with both 3D and 2D sections, and running on the Great Wall and on those Dragon things like in the HD game. Shamar's final Time Attack mission (some "Collect Rings" missions use parts of this level too) is a complete, full second act entirely with two 3D "sand-mobile" sections with multiple paths and a full new 2D section in the middle, it's a complete Shamar Act 2 that's not the main act at all.
Adabat also has a second act, though it's broken up into separate missions and never combined into one act like Shamar's was, not to mention it's sadly missing an entire 2D section that has a slot and references but unfortunately isn't anywhere on the disk beyond a flat plane and void, not even in any missions. This level starts with a Time Attack mission, with you running on a track really high up, dodging not-Thwomps and other things, before launching out of a cannon and bouncing down to another area below, running along until you reach a gate, this is where the mission ends but the actual level keeps going. It continues into a brief transition section beyond the gate that you can see but never actually interact with in the final game, before entering a cave. This cave is where a "Collect Rings" mission is set, and it's a really cool part of the stage that's surprisingly open in where you can go. After the end of the cave you somehow exit into a 2D section (which like I said isn't anywhere on the final disk so we don't know what was in it), and the end of the 2D section leads into the final Adabat mission you only unlock after you've found EVERY hidden item and unlockable in the game (so 100%-completion basically), with you running and drifting along these curved paths and then along the outside of this tube-like structure, while surrounded by waterfalls on either side, until you reach this temple thing and that's where the level ends. A shame the full act from start to finish isn't in the final game as a single level, and is only present in pieces in missions and missing the 2D piece entirely, but it's still really cool nonetheless.

While I hate the Dimps Generations game (no red rings, no real cutscenes, no 3d, homing attack added to Classic stages, and fewer stages), I think Dimps Lost World is underrated. Granted, it's mediocre in the same ways that console Lost World is mediocre. But I found the controls on the 3ds smoother than on the Wii U. The 3ds was better at judging when to climb up a wall vs. when to run along it, which led to way fewer deaths on wall jump/run sections. A lot of the worlds felt more thematically coherent. The boss battles were mostly superior. The color power-ups were faster and more fun to use (no cube or rocket). Super Sonic in Dimps Lost World is probably the best implementation of Super Sonic in any 2010s era Sonic game, period.
I just wish Dimps made a proper lava world instead of just making it a boss gauntlet with no actual levels. If they included that, then I'd call it the definitively superior version of the game.

More respect for Unwiished! Yes! It has its flaws(Say, some really poorly chosen camera angles in night stages for example), but it is generally unique and good enough that I actually want to see a *remake* of it to improve on some of its weaker aspects. Which is effectly the highest praise one can give a game that was basically just developed to fill a marketing slot and nothing more(Like, there is no one demanding a remake of Gens 3DS for example). Sonic Team won't do it(They clearly don't care to touch these "lesser" games), so I hope fans will pick it up eventually.
Also that point about Unleashed being inaccessible...yeah. I have never played that game because I have simply not had the opportunity to. Now that we know that they *can* still port the games that were using Havok, I hope they actually go through with giving us Unleashed on PS5/PC/Switch 2/Maybe Xbox, idk(Lol)
16:55 Pro tip I figured out while playing: You can press the button preemtively. If the button is pressed and Sonic gets in range of one of these actions, he will grab onto it automatically, making it every time without fail. It is a bit silly and this "grabbing delay" should probably be fixed in such a theoretical remake I mentioned earlier in the comment, but keeping this in mind actually makes the plattforming functional and consistent rather than a cointoss.
18:28 Dolphin...doesn't? I played it just fine, mapped my controller to the classic controller setting and it worked wonderfully. It's appearently even better now since they fixed some sort of microstutter problem since I played it.

This is still my favorite version of Unleashed and one of my favorite Sonic games of all times. I love how the boost gameplay works here, and even with the sometimes lacking level design, I still think it's pretty fun to play. My biggest problem with this version is the imbalance between the number of day stages vs night stages, I wish there were more day stages, but even then, the Werehog stages in this version are shorter and a little quicker, more focused on platforming and puzzle solving rather than combat, and I actually enjoy them a lot, but still, day stages are the best.

You didn't say it in this video, but I did hear it from several other influencers and somewhat the comment section, so I'd like to say it anyways: The Unleashed Project, and other mods that port some stages from Unleashed HD to another game, are not a replacement for the actual full game...
Unleashed HD is way more than just the main daytime stages. Unleashed HD has optional side levels, explorable hubworlds, NPC sidestories (with small level missions of their own sometimes), finding and rescuing possessed people by talking to them and seeing if they behave weirdly, finding all kinds of collectibles (concept art or food you can also give to Chip to see what he thinks about it), and of course entirely different night stages.
Yes, it has the stupid sun and moon medals, but it does irk me when other people say it's okay to just play The Unleashed Project and disregard the actual whole experience. I don't even love Unleashed (I have a lot of beef with how long, boring and drab the werehog stages get; though it's still better than the Wii/PS2 version), but it doesn't feel right when people treat the full game like it's replaceable with a mod that doesn't replicate the entire game (and also adds, in my opinion, controversial level design changes and makes it slightly less pretty; though maybe newer mods that aren't Unleashed Project have attempted to fix that...). ^^'
And yes, it's not easily accessible officially, but then just play it on Xenia... Tracker_TD has a good emulation guide for it that also mentions mods that can make Unleashed HD more fun while still being the whole game. And dumping the game doesn't even require modding an Xbox 360 (which, from what I recall, are usually kind of affordable consoles nowadays; maybe the game is less affordable now because the digital Xbox 360 marketplace shut down but I haven't looked into it). Bleh.
Also, you can play the Wii version with a GameCube or Classic Controller controller. You don't need to use a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The werehog gameplay footage also shows GameCube button prompts...
Also also, I feel like you could've brought up the neat and unique life system in the Wii/PS2 version of this game. Unless you didn't know that you can permanently upgrade your life counter by unlocking doors in the Gaia Temples... If you didn't know, uhm, you can unlock doors in the Gaia Temples with enough sun and moon medals that lead to small puzzle platformer sections that use both Sonic and the werehog which reward you with permanent increases to the amount of lives you start with at the beginning of a stage. I think that system should be in more games because it trains newbies by making them play stages repeatedly because of the life/game over system, and rewards people that play stages well with medals that they can use to increase their life counter, but oh well...

Thanks! This is quite a unique boost game. It's interesting how it shares a lot of quirks from the Storybook games, like the animations and mission structure, even down to the tutorial. While I do prefer the HD version overall, I do respect this version. I think it's quite good, and I honestly wish some of its design elements carried over to later boost games, such as the segmented boost meter which requires managing your speed and when to get rings. But it's unlikely there'll ever be another boost game like this, mainly since it's overshadowed by its HD counterpart and it's a Dimps game. But imagine if the other 3D boost games got counterparts like this. If they ported Sonic Generations to the Wii or PS2, do you think it would have played like this? How would you go about redesigning the other boost games to take inspiration from this one? If it's possible, that is... Also, I think the Riders series has the air meter that works similarly to this.

I actually grew up with this version of Unleashed but on PS2. Yeah, the visuals are not going to look as good compare to the Xbox and PS3 version, hell even the Wii has better graphics than PS2, and that's an older console. Gameplay wise, it's way more fun than the HD version, but that's just from my experience from playing both versions. Yeah there's some fun parts in the HD version, but the most stand out moments are the Egg Dragoon boss fight with it's QTE, the hub worlds, and some stages like Apotos and Chun-nan. However, HD feels way frustrating mainly from the boost is also on the home attack button causing some deaths, the Dark Gaia boss fight, Eggmanland taking WAY too long and filled with unfair placements of traps and enemies, and the balancing when Werehog Sonic walks over death pits especially ones with the spikes in Empire City making the process very slow.
Overall, the Wii and PS2 versions are a much better experience on a gameplay stand point with a unique take on the boost formula and one I'd like to see make a return if possible, serviceable Werehog segments, a final boss and final level that's not insanely long and unforgiving, and the Gaia hub temples with treasures to seek out.

Hot take: Unwiished (SD) is better than unleashed (HD).

I had such a horrible Skill issue with one level i dont remember the name of it but it had like the spikes on the walls while your tiptoeing across and at the end of the level it had a bunch of tiny platforms and mage guys attacking me literally the only werehog stage i full on hate in unwiished god it made me so frustrated

the wii/ps2 version is good but the only problem is in this game the warehoge stages it's too long that makes the wii version longer than the hd version 🗿💔

didn't they also split production of sonic 06 because the Wii couldn't run it? Nintendo and their crappy hardware ruined Sonic.

@@Xerophlume the split created Sonic and the secret rings, not unwiished. Nintendo definitely didn’t ruin Sonic, it was all segas decision.

Sonic 06 was too far behind, having the entire team on board would not have saved the project. They would have had to either cancel it or delayed it and Sega was not ready to do either. The unwillingness to let a single major anniversary date slip by is what ruined the series.
