They also used to prescribe exercise and outdoor fresh air to men. Men have never had our best interests at heart.

Media portrayals of women also reinforces this phenomenon with it mostly portraying women as helpless and men as saviors. It’s a loop of influence. This honestly frustrates me the more I think about it.

Thank you. I always find your videos informative and valuable. This video reminded me of when I was in college and taking a Psychology of Women class. At one point, we discussed women's experiences in mental health facilities prior to 1970 and how women patients were often 'prescribed' tasks like ironing, mopping, folding laundered clothes, etc by their male psychiatrists. I found it disturbing back then and I still do as it is a very clear example of how women are trained to be servants to men and how playing the role of the subservient was seen as 'mentally healthy.' Crazy!

Decades ago when I was in school, my counselor put me in classes like home economics and sewing when I hated those things and refused to let me in any of the shop classes. I'd walk by wood working and mechanics classes on my way to my classes and stop to watch the boys. It made me so sad and angry. As a mother, I raised my boy and girl children the same and, if they were refused classes at school, I raised hell and got them in. My kids turned out great!

This sounds like I need to give myself the west cure, and my husband the rest cure to realign things

My mom was a (physically active) camp nurse. Myself, my sisters, and my brother all got a version of the West cure, and for that, I'm incredibly grateful. I grew up playing sports, too, and that further made me resilient. I have had female friends, though, who don't have the same childhood training to turn to exercise and activity that I had, and they definitely struggle more with that type of thing than I do.

Locking women up also occurred for: postpartum depression, MISBEHAVIOR, unladylike actions, smoking, wearing pants and anything else out of the prescribed behavior as defined by her husband, father or male guardian. The last of these laws were repealed in England in the 1950s.
We may see them in the US. And, yes, it can happen here.

I highly recommend the West cure, on a smaller scale I have often found going for a run/playing a sport will help get me out of my own head.

Yes i guess i have and am experiencing both sides...i was medicated for 27 years..which destroyed my soul...i now live off-grid, single, on 50 acres, splitting wood to stay warm where it snows in winter...yes being in nature is very beneficial....i remember as i child i rode horses...it was the happiest time of my life..

I also lived off grid on 47 acres :) Being surrounded by nature is so special. Hauling water and other daily tasks are so rewarding. Nice to meet another like minded person.

I love horses and being outdoors. I would recommend getting a horse to anyone with depression. There is nothing better than riding up into the hills with your horse companion. So good for your mind. Maybe it's because I had a horse as a child and into my 20's that I'm sort of a strong woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind. I'm 69 and still have a horse.

When I was 13, I was sent to an adolescent unit for school phobia. There were boys and girls in the unit, but the sexes were treated very differently. Us girls were infantilised. We weren't allowed to watch anything remotely scary on tv, and were closely watched by the staff 24/7. The boys had much more freedom. How can girls treated this way ever fit in with the adult world when they leave places like this?

Not a cure, but when I was in an all-girl high school (1960-1964), we could play basketball only by staying within circles painted on the floor. Supposedly our uteruses would have been harmed if we ran around and jumped freely.

My grandma was locked up and given shock treatments in the 1990s by my grandfather who was unhappy with her depression (she was was burnt out from neurodivergence.) This happened over and over for a decade. She died in an asylum.

Learning about how psychology and mental health were scrutinized back in the days before the internet, television, social media, etc is just one piece of a spiraling rabbit hole.

I didn’t treat my son and daughter differently, they would both get a hug after falling but not a lot of fussing unless their injuries warranted it.
This is also how I treat my two grandsons, even though the eldest often behaves as though every minor bump or scratch is life threatening.

Love your videos! But I will say I think it might just be a different parenting style rather than a boy/girl dichotomy. I was definitely a run and hugger with both my sons (don't have any girls), though looking back I do think that letting our kids of BOTH genders dust themselves off was probably a better approach.

I notice on the playground at school, the girls will sit and gossip and the boys will play ball.
Girls will play Fairy Houses or read, and the boys will play physical games like tag.

Boys are taught to take up space and play and be loud. Girls are taught to stay outbid the way and be quiet. Sit still be a lady...

Yes, I have seen this type of treatment especially in the religious environment. On the other hand, I have seen a push for women to have equal treatment in sports as men which I think is a step in the right direction.

A lot of indigenous societies would have women give birth in the wild alone with no problem.

They would encourage them to be in positions with gravity helping them, as you know. I do not understand why they expect women in the west to have babies on their back just for doctor convenience. It is absolutely stupid and life threatening

I take a middle position in the nature vs nature debate regarding gender behavior.
I think both are true. That there are natural differences between men and women. But there are lots of exceptions and that culture can widen gender behavior differences.
