The background for this stage is awe-inspiring; an apparent, massive artificial planetoid, complete with its own cities, bodies of water and even shorelines! What an awesome game this was and continues to be, on every level, even almost 30 years later.
Wow, man thx for uploading this. Brings back memories of being 13 again. I remember saving my lawn mowing money to buy this and Super Star Wars. Needless to say I don't think I left the house that summer :)
Am I the only one who thinks the music in this stage is movie score quality? It really brings a dark Sci-Fi atmosphere that makes the level all the more breathtaking. The sound chip on the SNES was extremely ahead of its time.
This was supposed to be a reconnaissance mission. The colony's defenses weren't supposed to fire on you, they were supposed to be aiming at the enemy ships swarming the artificial skies. There weren't even supposed to be any enemy ships. The brass thought this colony was still theirs, packed with refugees though it was. Well, maybe it still is. Hopefully not everyone's dead. You can't tell from up here, ten thousand feet above the habitation layer. The cities don't appear to be in ruins, which is a promising sign. Are the citizens just cowering under lockdown in their homes? Or did they throw in their lot with the invaders? Did they willingly allow the last un-ruptured space colony in the solar system to become an outpost for the enemy? Whatever happened, it's not your place to make guesses or judgments. Tell the cigar-chompers when you get home that the colony was crawling with bogeys and all the defense systems had been reprogrammed to kill you. Let them decide what to do next. You just hope the colony won't wind up like the others. Every other colony in orbit just got a hole blown in it to let all the air out. This station at least was given a chance to live. Unless, of course, they're busy tearing the place open from the inside...
This is something I have always thought about. If the Axelay ship was invading an enemy base, don't you find it weird that they would just open the doors for him?. "Oh, you are here to attack us?. Here! let me open the door for you!. Come right in!".
Man I almost hate/like this level during my everyday life. I'd say the revolving background of that level does captivate people in some way. I like the way you use the rice gun (that's what I call it during pre-school) to defeat the chicken-boss; you make it seem easy to do when it's actually on the hard level. My final speech to that boss before the finishing blow is; "Eat rice, CHICKEN-MAN!"
I played this game to perfection. I could beat it on the hardest difficulty w/ no continues and proved it to non believers several times for fun. Legendary game and will never be forgotten. Not the most difficult SHMUP but extremely enjoyable, the best soundtrack of its time.
Então, assim como eu e muita gente, você está esperando pelo Axelay 2 desde então. Há uma promessa nos créditos finais que é exibida para quem finaliza esse jogo nas dificuldades mais difíceis, promessa essa que nunca foi cumprida pela Konami.
what an amazing shmup!. i bought it about a year ago and just now getting into it. i know im late to the party, but at least i show up. anyhow, im on level 6 and ive loved every minute of it. man oh man. so many great shmups on 16 bit.
Yes, it is. The Message is (as I remember) "SEE YOU AT AXELAY 2" (I personally call it Expert Mode ^^ ) Damn it, I was so happy, when I read it. Me and my best friend we were searching for that new Axelay 2 all night long. And that was in 1996 or about that time. But I think it never was published
The graphics on this boss were really cool looking back then. I love how there were somewhat complicated mechanics on how to defeat each one. This guy makes it look easy but there was strategy back then.
I have this on my old beloved SNES on an american cartridge. (I have a European SNES). It's a nice little gadget to sit with cartridge-converters etc etc when playing this game. Great game!
Well, yes, you are right about the secret message. It only appears after the player has defeated the last boss on the HARD level. The projected message states "See you in Axelay 2!" Sadly, the staffs who made Axelay have left Konami (to form a new company called Treasure), before they have the chance this promise come true. And I'm sorry, I do not speak Português. =)
1:23 one, two, three, good morning child, life is about to begin and endless adventures are waiting for you. Breath the greatful air of music and nothing ever takes you down. reach for your nearby star, the ever smiling sun.
you know what other old school game was cool as hell, "Lords of Thunder "on the sega CD drive. The only draw back on it was that it was on Sega CD in the first place.
@luriomaxx i thought the same thing. man, gaming back in the day was simple. You are in school all week, its finally friday, Your mom or Dads pay week. they pick you up, take ya to the video store to pick out a game, its eat out night, you get your favorite place to eat and a good(hopefully) game. Good times
em 1993 eu meu irmao e meu dois primos gastaram mihões de reais para adequerir esse jogo com o super nes! era uma verdadeira alegria ate hoje choro e emoção... tempo que não volta mais
Casuals like Call of Duty, DLC, Graphics, are more important to some, than story and gameplay, which is sad ,but that is what has happened. Not many want a challenge anymore, how many games hold your hand along the way and guide your path.
Too bad people don't pay attention to this game because "it's not Zelda, Megaman, Mario, Final Fantasy or Metroid" geez, everyone is trying to look cool playing those titles and forget classic games like Axelay.
If not in my top 10 games of all time, at least in my top 3 shoot 'em ups! So nice to know people who enjoy this piece of awesomeness :3 I think I'm gonna play axelay today.
@alcaster42 It is on hard, you can see on the boss' fire, and the fire in general - moving faster. I'd not live for 1 minute here. Oh and the boss music here is the coolest in the game ^^
After Hard? I think it was that after you finish hard you get to - let's call it - "Expert" and then this message: Easy: Ship flying away Normal: Ship flying away+see The planet Hard: Ship flying away+see The planet+Medal Expert: Ship flying away+see The planet+Medal+"See you in/at/on Axelay 2" BTW: I think you only reach this expert mode by finishing all other in a row, because i often finished hard and then started easy again and only on time i got this expert mode
when KONAMI used to make great games , this is the best music of the game and there are other great soundtrack games like dark forest in the magical quest from capcom or the soundtrack of super castlevania IV and demon´s crest
Interesting, i don't think that was really enemy base - see destroyed satellites early in level, very humanly buildings far below in station, hardly damaged gates and portal in the end and that strange things like barricades? I think that was once mankind's station, captured by enemy
i play on snes finish the game on hard and continue to play, if you finish again a secret message of konami apears , sorry about the english im brazilian
there is: Perhaps the Brazilian is right and you only have to play hard and then again all 6 levels, but i dont think that the guy is right. I played Easy-->Normal-->Hard-->"Expert" To compare: Amount and speed of Bullets increase for a Jellyfish in Lv 4: Easy: slow, 4 bullets Normal: little bit faster, 8 bullets Hard: fast, 16 bullets Expert: fucking fast, 32 Bullets!!!! I needed about 30 lives for expert and had 2 or 3 million points, i guess
Incredible Sound and Amazing Stage.
These Composers of Konami was True Legends like in Super Castlevania 4 too.
I miss my Childhood so much.
The music in this stage its so epic

The music in this stage is so good, one of my all time favorites.
Nice tune. I prefer the first stage soundtrack though.
This music is really awesome... Awesome game too! Remind me memories...
Best Stage , Best Boss, Best music , in game , PERIOD!
I've always liked how the ship quickly rocks from side to side before flying off screen at the end of every level. Ah, memories! :)
Am I the only one who thinks the music in this stage is movie score quality? It really brings a dark Sci-Fi atmosphere that makes the level all the more breathtaking. The sound chip on the SNES was extremely ahead of its time.
You are not the only one mate..it's amazing
I had this music translated to my iPod and I bump it in my car. Yes, its THAT good
This was supposed to be a reconnaissance mission.

Damn... This is deep. +1
well shit
That music! ❤️
My first game for the SNES, this level was my favourite, the music brings back awesome memories.
Ahh yes, stage 2.. The banger.

Anyone else like that little victory dance the ship does when it defeats a boss? That's what I've always seen it as when it goes from side to side. :)
Yes, it is.
The Message is (as I remember) "SEE YOU AT AXELAY 2"

Defenetly the best Shoter on the SNES IMO!

This music is awesome. Makes me want to start doing push ups.
Great gameplay, great stage, great song! Thanks for posting this vid!

Love this level.
This game is a great example of why Super Nintendo was so much better than Genesis. The graphics and the sound say it all.
em 1993 eu meu irmao e meu dois primos gastaram mihões de reais para adequerir esse jogo com o super nes! era uma verdadeira alegria
ate hoje choro e emoção...
tempo que não volta mais
ED 209 boss! Epic!!
You watch this and ask yourself: What happened to video games?
Casuals like Call of Duty, DLC, Graphics, are more important to some, than story and gameplay, which is sad ,but that is what has happened. Not many want a challenge anymore, how many games hold your hand along the way and guide your path.
Wow... I thought I was the only one who loved the music on this level :)
Too bad people don't pay attention to this game because "it's not Zelda, Megaman, Mario, Final Fantasy or Metroid" geez, everyone is trying to look cool playing those titles and forget classic games like Axelay.
You couldn't have said it better! You could surely find this game in my top 10 games of all time!
If not in my top 10 games of all time, at least in my top 3 shoot 'em ups! So nice to know people who enjoy this piece of awesomeness :3 I think I'm gonna play axelay today.
Nice to know im not alone! #wishIcouldplayaxeleyagain
You can actually play it here :)
game-oldies.com/search/node/axelay
of course! Thanks man! :-)
The sound effects remind me a lot of Super Contra III : Alien Wars... Dare I say ... they ARE the same sound effects?
@alcaster42 It is on hard, you can see on the boss' fire, and the fire in general - moving faster. I'd not live for 1 minute here.
Oh and the boss music here is the coolest in the game ^^
Este juego es uno de mis favoritos de mi niñez siempre lo quise conseguir pero es difícil encontrarlo
It's called "T-36 Towbar" at 4:05!!
The boss is the older brother of the ED-209 robots from Robocop
Like a 16 bit version of the Citadel in Mass Effect.
just look at the details and colors at 5:11
wauw !!!
Notice how the explosion animations are the same as in Contra III :') ... konamixplosions.
Yes, I wrote a comment about it in you level 6 vid
After Hard?
I think it was that after you finish hard you get to - let's call it - "Expert" and then this message:
Easy: Ship flying away
Normal: Ship flying away+see The planet
Hard: Ship flying away+see The planet+Medal
Expert: Ship flying away+see The planet+Medal+"See you in/at/on Axelay 2"
BTW: I think you only reach this expert mode by finishing all other in a row, because i often finished hard and then started easy again and only on time i got this expert mode
I'm gonna say something controversial. Maybe, I don't know. But the Vulcan weapon is, mechanically, one of the greatest weapons in any game.
The graphics remind me of Contra III
when KONAMI used to make great games , this is the best music of the game and there are other great soundtrack games like dark forest in the magical quest from capcom or the soundtrack of super castlevania IV and demon´s crest

youres good playier:)
Fuck! I dont know why, but I cannot post answers to posts. Sorry for that.
Pwned by the player! LOL!!!
@Isurandil Why oh why didn't he let the Boss live until it fired its Main Gun?!?
Why blue explosions
I bet everyone watching this is in his late 20s or early 30s
It was a close call from :01 to 5:11.
i play on snes finish the game on hard and continue to play, if you finish again a secret message of konami apears , sorry about the english im brazilian
i too =D
is it true that if you beat the game on very hard there is a message that says "coming soon axelay 2"?
there is:
Perhaps the Brazilian is right and you only have to play hard and then again all 6 levels, but i dont think that the guy is right.
I played Easy-->Normal-->Hard-->"Expert"

Doesn't sound anything at all like my version, but I have the actual SNES game, not an Emulator. Sounds much better in the flesh, so to speak.
try extra hard and send
It was a close call from :01 to 5:11.
