Thanks for this. 1:20 Since the eggs and potatoes take about the same time to cook, when making potato salad, I just put the eggs in the same pot as the potatoes, after the water is boiling. Saves a pot and burner.
I am obsessed with Russian potato salad, it’s what I grew up with. (Boiled carrots, and pickles instead of cucumbers.) I just discovered that there’s a Japanese version, and am looking forward to trying it! Thank you for the recipe!
I love this salad!! We make at Christmas eve in the Czech Republic and in Poland they call this type of salad a Russian salad. You just put in pickled cucumbers rather than fresh. 😍
Oh my! I didn't know how simple it is to make this salad. I made it just now and it's sitting in the fridge to chill. I had a taste of it and it tastes just like the ones I've had in Japanese restaurants. A million thanks for sharing this recipe with us. I'll be sharing your recipe with my Japanese foodie friends. 🙏
Thank you so much for these wonderful recipes! My grandma used to make Japanese potato salad for me when I was little, and seeing your video made me remember all the great times I had with her. I can't wait to make this recipe!
Thank you! Thank you for this recipe! 🙏🏽 Made it 3 times already and my family loves me more every time. I have done a vegetarian version as well - without the egg and ham and it was still so delicious. Thank you!!!
It’s been a while since I’ve had Japanese-style potato salad! I’m reminded of my mother’s recipe - she adds apple too! Actually it goes really well and I recommend it. :)
This is not the first time I come back to watch this video and remind myself the process of making this salad. Your clear and beautifully shot & edited video get people more into cooking is amazing. And the well written, superb detail and functional layout of the recipe from your website is modern, simple and easy to follow. The scale for US/metric and portion is super cool, one tight crop photo with all ingredients in it is super handy. Thank you for your work and sharing - Wishing you and family have a great Christmas and happy new year !!! Regards Oscar (fan from Australia)
I haven't had a potato salad that required this many ingredients before, but I must say it does look like it will have an interesting taste. I must try this. Thank you again, Nami!
I love potato salad!💕Yours is so colorful and beautiful! I often use onion, cucumber and canned tuna!😍It takes more time to cook it comparing to other salads but it’s worth taking time!❤️
Yes I agree!! My mom never used onion in hers, and I grew up eating one with out onion. I tried adding sliced (and chilled) onion with my family and they rejected. 😂 It's refreshing crisp texture tho!!!
This is a taste of my childhood. I've recently made a slight variation on your recipe. I like both for their lighter texture then western version with their high proportion of vegetables to potatoes.
I like to watch your videos and I have already made a few recipes. Potato salad is also very popular in our country - we only cook potatoes with the skin, which we peel after cooking and cut the potatoes into cubes. We use pickled vegetables (carrots, celery, parsley, peas, corn, capers, onions ... and especially pickles). Who likes, even a small hot pepper. We also add Dijon mustard to the mayonnaise. :-)
Japanese mayonnaise has a thicker, creamier texture, and a more savory flavor. It uses egg yolks as compared to whole eggs. Additionally, Japanese mayonnaise is typically made with rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar, instead of distilled vinegar.
Seems yummy. But i have a question, if we squeeze the carrots and cucumber in salt and rinse with water and squeeze, isn't it the nutrients will be wasted?
The reason we salt is to withdraw moisture out. For the potato salad, if you don't do that, moisture will slowly release inside the potato salad and it will go bad. So it's very important step. It's not always 100% for nutrients, but it's used for texture, color, and some nutrients for sure.
Japanese Potato Salad (Recipe) ポテトサラダレシピ (作り方) 2 russet potatoes 2 tsp kosher/sea salt ¼ cup frozen or canned corn 1 large egg 1 cucumber 2 inches carrot 2 slices black forest ham For Seasoning 1 Tbsp rice vinegar freshly ground black pepper 6 Tbsp Japanese mayonnaise
Hello what is the difference between Japanese mayonnaise and french mayonnaise ? 🤔 I'm French and your salad looks like "salade piémontaise" (Potatoes, Ham, eggs, mayonnaise, French pickles and tomatoes). 😉
Is that you Nami-san? Its been awhile to see you cooking. I wish you're doing okay. Thank you for your simple yet so delicious recipe. Be healthy be happy ^_^
Hi Ratna! Yes, that's me. My hands are getting so much tan from walking the dog often outdoor... 😂 I took a year off last year due to my shoulder surgery and recovery, but we're back! We don't share the intro and ending anymore as we learned from analytics that the majority is watching them. 😅 Take good care! Thanks for watching my video!
Thanks for this.

I've made this a couple of times and it's been really well-received. It was served as a side dish at a bbq, but it's practically a meal unto itself!
It’s been a while since I’ve had Japanese-style potato salad! I’m reminded of my mother’s recipe - she adds apple too! Actually it goes really well and I recommend it. :)
Agree! I mentioned about the variations (apple included) in the blog post too. It's fun to have variations sometimes!
@@justonecookbook thank you for the reply! I’ll check out your blog too. :)
Where can I find the pan that you boiled the egg in?
I'm literally bingewatching all of your recipe videos and I'm currently salivating. Thank you for sharing all of these delicious recipes!!! :)

This potato salad on the side with a crispy Tonkatsu is my all time favourite meal.

I just saw it in a game and I was really curious. It looks really delicious. 😋😋
I haven't had a potato salad that required this many ingredients before, but I must say it does look like it will have an interesting taste. I must try this. Thank you again, Nami!
It's Japanese style potato salad that was introduced 150 years ago and it's similar to Russian potato salad.
Wow! Looks delicious. Thank you for sharing such an easy recipe. I will try it soon! 😊🍽

Looks so good!
Thank you!
hmm, i make often karaage chicken with steam rice... would this potato salad go well with it ?🤔
Sure! It will work great as a side dish. 🤗
What would you say the main difference is with mayo vs Japanese mayo? As always, thanks for all the great receipes!
Japanese mayonnaise has a thicker, creamier texture, and a more savory flavor. It uses egg yolks as compared to whole eggs. Additionally, Japanese mayonnaise is typically made with rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar, instead of distilled vinegar.
My boss send me this recipe to make now but we don’t have cucumber and mayonnaise. What can I use if no mayonnaise?
If I cook this, I will likely eat it all for myself...
😂 Hehe I can eat a lot too....
Nicely done :)
Thank you for your kind words!
Nice I also make
NATSUKASHI NAAAA !! POTATO SARADA OISHII SOOOO ^.^
what ham is that though? it is rather obviously not blackforest but some boiled type.
Yummy 😋
Thank you!!

Hello what is the difference between Japanese mayonnaise and french mayonnaise ? 🤔
I'm French and your salad looks like "salade piémontaise" (Potatoes, Ham, eggs, mayonnaise, French pickles and tomatoes). 😉
Jpn mayo is more sweet and rich.
Can you store this in the fridge? And for how long?
You can keep the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Easy to omit the eggs and it Can’t be proven right or wrong!
Вместо кукурузы надо горошек. Не свежий огурец, а солёный. И морковку сварить вместе с картошкой. Тогда будет норм.
Вот тоже самое хотел написать!😂😂😂
Оливьешку в топ!

Mashed potato salad?
Kind of, Japanese potato salad uses mashed potatoes!
Russian potato salad is similar.
Japanese potato salad is the version of Russian potato salad! It was introduced over 150 years ago in Japan (more on the blog)!
I can't get Kewpie mayo, so I use yogurt, mustard and a little honey.
Hope it came out well! 🤗❤️
I'm allergic to mayo.
Without the Japanese mayo, the flavor will be lacking in tanginess. Instead, how about adding some freshly squeezed lemon?
Warning - may contain traces of Mayo
Why would you put corn in a Japanese food?!
