I went a different route. I never really had a number in my head. I just decided I would work 6-7 days a week 12-14 hrs a day and push myself as hard as possible to get my business off the ground and pick up customers. I rarely said no to a job for the first 2-3 years. By year 4 I started cutting loose customers that were difficult or not profitable enough. 9 years in business this year. I don’t advertise at all, no social media or door flyers. It has always been referral based growth. I met a couple older guys in the business early on that liked my work ethic and they referred a lot of great customers my way. I have been blessed.
@ First couple years were rough no lie. Income was just barely enough to live on. I started out with a personal savings from working my “9-5” job of about $20k. Lived off that basically the first year and about broke even. Each year after got better. I was doing all sorts of work the first couple years, then honed in on a few services to be more efficient. This year I will be around $120k in revenue with operating expenses being around $50k. That’s doing 4-5 days a week. My busy season runs from April to November and I make about 90% of my income in those months. I need to work on my winter income as that is one area I just haven’t figured out. Plowing snow is super unpredictable and can add a lot of operational expense. I’m 49 now so a younger guy that wanted to work more days a week could easily blow my numbers out of the water.
Same here year 5 solo and work 3 to 4 days a week. Several commercial accounts keep me going year round and have figured out saving money march-sept to help in the winter months. All word of mouth now days and love it. Cut the cheap o's and have a set price on all services. Making over 60k and all equip is paid for to include truck enclosed, open trailer and mowers.
As a solo guy this video is so good. I would just encourage anyone who’s solo to not give up during those first few years. I’m telling you if you stick it out, and you continue to follow the wisdom that Johnathan is passing out you can really change your life. I use to think that there was no way on earth I could even think about 4k a month let alone 10k what!!! I’m here to say it’s possible. Keep going you CAN do it!
Amen brother same, year 5 solo and the first 3 years were tough but I locked in several commercial accounts that keep money coming in year round and started saving 1k a month from march- Sept. Work 3-4 days a week and doing great! It's very possible
@@christopherteer3462 that’s awesome bro! It took me until about my 3rd year to really start seeing things shift and gain a lot of word of mouth customers. I was fortunate to connect with a couple of local real estate agencies, and that really helped me stay busy. Sounds like you’ve got an awesome system going with 3-4 day work week, and it’s always good to be committed to having a savings plan throughout the season. 👍🏾 keep it going!
I started my lawn business in August of this year. Yes, right at the end of our seasnon here in Austin TX. Anyways I've been following you and took your online course. I've implemented many of what you suggested and been slowly growing every week. I'm crossing my fingers I land this HOA contract that would pay me $3k a month. My goal is in 12 months time I'll be at the $10k a month in revenue! Keep up what you're doing! Reallly appreciate your time. Also, your online course is great for someone just starting out!
I also started a business at the end of August this year, it’s been good, here in Texas it’s been warm so the season is still going, looking to transition to winter services soon and really hit hard on the advertising for the spring rush. Good luck brother 👍👍
Our stories are very similar. My magic number was 58 clients. I was overworked at 63 clients but like you did not want to work 5 or 6 days a week. First year ended up with a double hernia and struggled till winter for a operation. Did not know if I could really do this. Well I did and now 15 years later its pretty easy. No flyers. I turned down around 300 jobs last year. One year I turned down about 460 jobs. Live in a very dense area and finding work is not a issue. Also worked for Property Maintenance Companies and HOAs through the years which is super easy $$$. Semi Retiring end of this year. Just going to do enough to get some exercise plus my yard. Still love the work.
You inspired me many moons ago. I’m at 20k per month now and I contribute allot of my success to you and this wonderful channel. My next question is what do you do as far as health insurance for you and your family? And great work Jamie and kids!!! Keep it up JC!! May God bless you and your family.
Jamie works part time at a local hospital, and we have a family plan through the hospital she works for! She has considered staying home full time, and we have started doing research as to what are our health insurance options. The options available for self employed folks are bad. What most of my friends do, who have small businesses in my area, is they have a catastrophic plan in place with a super high deductible... and just pray they don't need x-rays or other high dollar medical services throughout the year. It just stinks paying super high premiums for pretty crummy insurance... This is tough one for a lot of people!
Def want the 20k video. I started watching your channel recently as I’ve been thinking of launching a lawn maintenance based business. Then realized you happen to be from the same area (I live in Milton) Hopefully you’ll still let me sign up for the course as there is PLENTY of grass to go around. lol
I make $10,000 a month pretty much that amount. And 146 biweekly accounts here in Phoenix, Arizona area. I work 52 weeks a year here. In the summer, we have Bermuda and winter ryegrass, which is installed grows like nuts all winter. Winter here are 60°-70°. I also work solo, but I’m gonna tell you something right now. I just turned 59 years old and my arthritis is through the roof from lawn care. Your joints are like car tires they will wear out and I promise you if you’r on the go as Landscape owner trust me you will be arthritic sooner than you think. Build your team and stay at home and run the business from home as soon as possible.
1. Stretching the body is a must. 2. Have you tried plant based diet? For 2 days a week. 3. Adding food grade diatomaceous earth, turmic to a fruit smoothie with ground gloves helped my dad. He 74yrs young, retired mechanic. 4. Increase your recovery time/get more rest.
@ - well here in Phoenix, Arizona it’s 110° for six months straight. You just wanna be alive when you’re done at the end of the day landscaping. Dieting and things like that really don’t do anything. I feel like I’m landscaping in Saudi Arabian desert.
I would like to see the $20k a month video. This is my 5 year in business and it’s growing every year but I still work full time. My wife is worry if I went full time we would pay out a lot for medical insurance or just wouldn’t have the business to pay the bills. How did you and your wife talk about this?
I was injured overseas and now live in South West Florida. I have a enclosed trailer and great equipment but because of my injury I can't start a business by myself. I can however do all the administrative work and advertise. I would be willing to split profits with someone to do the physical work. Do you have any suggestions on how I should go about this?
Awesome video! What would your advice be for someone doing lawncare in south Florida to charge hugher prices? The majority of people in my area pay around $25 to maybe $30 per cut. I would love to be able to charge closer to $50 per cut. Thanks for all the great content.
My friends sister moved from the Tampa area 40-50 bucks a yard there. That did have the hedges trimmed to. I know this trailer parks dangerous sometimes to get paid bye but fast. 30 bucks a pop. Next I know of on person in Fl cuts a home for around 30 bucks he has had this account since 1998 fixed income older people. If you get gated communities like apartments there smaller hit them 35 to 40 a building check see how much trimming u might have to. Most gated communities for homes should be 40-55 bucks. 35-45 for a regular lot 75/100
Not everyone; I’m in Dallas and I’m charging considerably more than that. You don’t want every single yard, and while some people won’t want to pay premium rates, many people will.

@ I’m in Florida as well you should consider monthly prices for each account this way you have a consistent income from that alone then everything else you do is on top 👌🏼 been doing this for almost twenty years now…

I assume this is net not profit. What did you net in those first few months?
My truck was paid off. I had a $200 payment on the mower and I probably spent $125 a week on oil and gas. I profited well over $9k a month for sure.
Is this 10k per month all year long or just the growing season? 98% of my clients are monthly and so income on the mowing side stays consistent.
Is Florida bro slows out about 3 months a year and that's hurricane season play making money on clean up I still have weekly customers cuz the grass is still growing

I gotta ask you tho what type of customer did you get off facebook? I guarantee they are the cheap people people you DO NOT WANT
He probably paying a company on giving out those post cards thats what I do and 💩 is NOT CHEAP. YOU GOTTA PAY TO PLAY
Kudos to Jamie and the kids. They really believe in you. Great job!
Yes they do
It BS on getting 50 clients in 2 months it’s a SLOW GAME
