  • Today we're hanging with Henrik Gislason AKA The Lawn Care Kid in Chelsea MI showing off his lawn care setup! Henrik is only 16 and has an impressive lawn care business as a teenager.
In this video we zip around to a couple job sites and see Henrik's work, including a recent hardscaping retaining wall they did! Henrik has been knocking out lawns since he was 7 years old, and it's crazy to see the fruits of his labor.
Don't forget to check out Henrik's podcast interview on the Fullerton Unfiltered podcast here: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...

This kid is amazing! How does a 16 yr old do a retaining wall. He has ambition and seems to be a responsible, reliable, and respectful young man. I love that you're going around showcasing these young talents! It's great to see these youths going for it and succeeding!

It was really cool seeing him do it on Instagram Stories, and including sharing when they messed up and had to tear it all apart. It was a crazy adventure, one that they owned up and tackled and made it right. Pretty dope!

Diligence, and like he said, working with a landscaping company. That said, as someone who grew up working for a dad who owned his own landscaping company after being a head foreman at a very respected high-end builder, as an adult I wouldn't do them even with how much work I did on them simply because the liability is extremely high. If someone were to set up a lounge space near it and it fell on someone or their kid, as the installer you're the one responsible.
Retaining walls are something you really only want to do yourself when you have a LOT of experience learning from someone extremely skilled at them was always my father's perspective as it's very easy to have a small error not show for a few years and either something disastrous happens or little things happen, such as on the right side of this one where grass/weeds are growing through the retaining wall which shouldn't really happen for a good 10-20 years.
Not to take away from the effort - but retaining walls are something many actual landscaping companies tend to not do very well. You can see even from the video some of the imperfections in the grade and level which will display as time goes on. But I have a fairly biased POV on this as I've seen countless trained professionals not do it properly.
The way I'd go about this if I were starting as a kid would be to focus on the mowing part, build up a partner who can handle operating stuff for a summer, and making connections with one of the more reputable landscaping companies around and see if they'd be willing to take me for a summer to learn some specific areas. That's what my father did while being a foreman at that company to learn irrigation since that's another in-depth skillset when you're designing systems. He took a summer off from the company to work with and irrigation company letting them know when he returned he'd have a whole extra skillset to provide

Finished up my 25th year in Massachusetts and they certainly don't make it easy with the insurance requirements and over regulation . Don't be surprised to see them requiring landscapers to be licensed soon and a hydraulic license to operate a mower . Anyway great to see this young man doing such a good job 👏.

Brian, I have a very small lawn care business and my garage is a storage facility. The tours you do of the multi million $ operations are great but what would really help is how to organize a storage unit. For example someone with just a toolshed in their back yard can still hang stuff like trimmers on the wall but how do we, operating out of a storage unit organize the wall. I Knox you do or did operate out of a storage unit so I thought you would be the best for this. Thank you
