  • Want to start your very own lawn care business with an easy to follow and proven business plan?
Or, are you a few years in but need help taking your business to the next level to make more money?
www.turfprosacademy.com/turf-... is a mirror image of Florida Turf Pros business plan.
Delivered with Jonathan’s signature “Keep It Super Simple” approach, the course is a step by step plan that anyone can do!
All encompassing course: 5 Modules, 28 videos lessons + content and links that give you step by step tools to create and enhance your business. $397. Check out our complete course today if you're interested in starting your own successful lawn care business or simply taking your business to the next level.
Starting a lawn care business can be challenging. You can use a basic setup to start your lawn business without spending thousands of dollars on the best zero turn mower. In this video I'm showing you the basic lawn care setup I used in the beginning to keep costs down and make money right from the start.
My 3 Favorite Lawn Care Tools:
For Pruning: Dewalt Hand Saw amzn.to/3hCWYPJ
Best Multi Tool: Leatherman Skeletool amzn.to/34n8YlV
    Best Boots: Merrell Foresbtound amzn.to/3sXaCoo
    My Story:
In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for almost 7 years.
I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more,, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
My lawn business changed my life. I control my own schedule, my own income, and I am proud of what I have built.
On this channel you will learn the steps I have taken (and am still taking) to have a lawn care business that serves ME and my family’s needs.
We are a small owner operated company (2 full time mowing trucks/crews, and now a sod installation division).
If you are interested in starting a lawn care business this channel will provide the direction.
This really is a great industry to be in…
And I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you too.

The biggest factor regarding how many lawns you can cut in a day, aside of the equipment that you have access to, is route density. You can mow 30-40 6,000 sq ft homes a day if you have homes next door to each other etc. I have found that windshield time is the largest deterrent for total profit.

All good tips. One thing I think that’s most important to profitability that a lot of guys don’t think twice about is route density. I only work in one neighborhood. Drive time is your biggest expense. Every minute you’re on the road you are spending money but you also can’t make money during that time so it’s a double hitter. I hear of guys traveling 10-15 miles to mow a small yard and I just don’t understand it.

I wish it was as easy to use a stand on here in New Zealand. There is fencing around and between every property, usually a narrow entrance to the lawn at the rear of the house. We often are forced to use push mowers on the majority of relatively large lawns (500m/2)

When I started out doing lawns as an employee, I was on a 2-man crew, and whoever finished up first would do a walk-around to make sure no details were missed, because it was multi-million dollar homes. Me and this other guy were so efficient that we were knocking our route out and going to help other crews, and getting lots of compliments. We asked for a heavier work load and the boss' response was to split us up and give each of us 2 guys to babysit. The result was basically that we had 6 guys doing what the two of us could have done, and not doing it as well.

So each one makes approximately $ 1,000.00 a week for grass cutting type of jobs.
Also if they upsell any services they get 35 % of the labour charges.
If you pay employee that you can't keep an eye on imo don't pay them hourly because they will probably not work very hard or fast.
One third of labour and they will likely work harder, faster and will actually try to upsell customers because they will make more money.

My pricing is a little on the high side at times, but it's because of man hours spent soloing. Eventually I'll get to the point of having a 2 man operation and, pick up another zero turn of smaller size, which will help a lot.

When we mow early morning there is wet grass and dew on the ground until about 10am... we've already cut 10-12 yards by 10am and if we're discharging wet grass onto the sidewalks it creates a mess that is time consuming to clean up. Good morning, I have a question about your comment on equipment. i just formed my business last May and this is my first full year in the business. I use a Honda 21-inch 200cc push mower. This is because I can not afford a bigger mower yet. My credit also is not good enough to get a loan. So I am trying to grow it organically and save as I go and move up in equipment as I go. I have a Honda CRV 2015 that I use to haul my mower and Stihl weed eater and blower. I also do a lot of small landscaping jobs where I make good money. My per hr rate is $100 and my minimum mow is $50 wkly and $60 bi weekly. What are your thoughts on this and thank you for your time. Also, I do 1/8 yards up to 1/2 acre

Dude one thing I've noticed is you guys have very flat lawns with loads of space. Push mowers are required on hilly or tight lawns on slopes. Whether it's a back area with limited access or whatever, ride-ons are great but not a silver bullet

Just get a rear discharge mower for residential too bad the companies don’t make one that’s 48 inches wide. They would sell a lot of them.

Always start with edger. My edger was down so I had to use my string trimmer after I mowed to edge and trim. Edger is def the way to go.

I don't know why people like to blow grass on the driveway and roads with the mower. It's just a mess after you have to clean it..
This was my worst year in business because the grass was so dry I wasn't cutting any grass.

Hey, I have a client that wants me to text beforehand prior to her bi-weekly visits. Is this something you deal with? I hate this because sometimes I forget to text her. I don't like the responsibility, but didn't know if what I'm feeling is bad on my part.

    • @jjdiddle7150

If your day and time are consistent maybe ask if you can text if you're not going to be there versus having to text every single time you cut.

I tell all my clients weekly or every 2 weeks what day I will be there.
The only ones I text day of service is if they have a gate to get in back lawn. If this customer just wants you to text before you come just for the sake of texting before you come, in my experience it opens the door for the customer to say the lawn doesn't need to be cut, and after 2 weeks with regular rain it for sure needs to be cut. I get rid of customers like that quickly, because I'm not letting a lawn longer than 2 weeks without mowing it. I tell them go get your own mower and do it yourself.

I hired an "experienced" worker, at first it nearly doubled our efficiency. Then he began slowing down, when we stopped at a job he was finishing a text. A few other guys would put an empty trimmer back in the rack and grab a full one rather than to refill the spool. I will not hire another worker, solo is my m.o.
