The Quint: Cab Mein Charcha: Do Skirts, Smoking & Drinking Cause Rape?

  • The year 2017 began on a very disappointing note. One the first day itself, the country woke up to the news of Bengalore mass molestation. Instead of condemning the incident, our politicians repeated the same old victim blaming. ‘Can’t keep ants away from sugar, said Abu Azmi from the Samajwadi Party.
    This isn’t the first time when a politician blamed women for rape. From women’s short skirts to mobile phones, to their smoking and drinking, politicians have given absurd reason for why rapes happen. In this episode of Cab Mein Charcha we ask our cabbies whether they agree with them or not.

    • @hamsashree9629
      @hamsashree9629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Shiksha Maharaj true. Dressings isn't the problem. Women can wear the most concealing dress and still get raped. From babies to old women, it is happening to all age groups. Saying dress is responsible is like saying smoking does not cause cancer, people get cancer because they have lungs.
      People are soo blind they don't even know how to identify the problem.

    • @hamsashree9629
      @hamsashree9629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Shiksha Maharaj I couldn't agree more. People act soo kind and compassionate saying death penalty isn't a solution, men should be educated that's all, do you really need education to know that forcing someone against their will is wrong? Defiling an infant is wrong? Touching a woman in crowded public place is wrong? Are men soo barberic that basics have to be taught to them? How is that girls from villages have the will to become IAS officers (same goes to some men) but men end up harassing girls.

    • @hamsashree9629
      @hamsashree9629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Shiksha Maharaj it's not just in the military, we can find men in position, like politics, actors (even actress) who have managed to voice out shitty statements. I guess the only way for a woman to protect herself is to become soo angry at that situation that she tears the muscles from her attacker with all her might and fury.

  • @anjali7926

    People who claim that older generation was regressive, this proves that older generation was much more empathetic, compassionate and responsible than today's generation. The so called young generation today can make tiktok videos, comment and troll on social media and do the best of activities to kill time. So obviously this is the expected result.

      I don t mean to be offensive, but you can speak for yourself. You look at a small group of people and say they are good for nothing and only know how to waste their time. The society at this time has so many intelligent and talented individuals, and then people like you say the younger generation is a waste of resources. Honestly, before commenting such things it would be best to think about what you're saying a few times.

    • @anjali7926
      @anjali7926 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ruchitashah643 I DIDN'T say, young generation is a waste. We can't generalize anything like that, but for sure a fair section is irresponsible as they are way too much in their comfort zone than the older generation.
      Secondly, one has the right to voice their opinion which is (I suppose) our fundamental right, nobody is asking you to agree with it. If you have a problem with anybody's opinion on a public forum, then it's your problem, not the other person's.

      @@anjali7926 As were my first words, I don't mean to be offensive. And if you can voice your opinion, then I too have the right to disagree with that and voice my opinion to counter yours. Also, YES you did essentially generalize it when you said "so-called young generation" and then went on to talk about how they were all a bunch of good-for-nothings. The way you framed it, was offensive to me, and I'm sure many others because what your saying is that the younger generation is worse compared to the "older" generation, when you've only observed a small group of people to make such big assumptions like that

    • @anjali7926

Though I would disagree that one must “deal with it” if they don’t agree with someone’s opinion, because that would simply mean expressing their own opinion. See if a girls shows skin then it is not to attract boys but to be happy and confident about her curves and try new style... Just like boys like to flaunt theirs abs and shoulder after loosing weight or workout... My question if the world would be opposite and boys are raped, abused or molested just for showing their abs or wearing shorts to beach or pool party or staying long for night party then imagine wat girls go through... I am not being sexist or feminist but now I questions to all males asking why girls need to show skin to attract males.. Hope this is a wake up call...... I dnt support rape, molest or abuse of any kind irrespective of victims genders. In many parts of d world even small boys or guys are raped or abused and I think there should be justice and equal rights for all human beings of world irrespective of caste, race, gender etc...... Lets not divide ourselves but work and live together in harmony to make our world a better by respecting each other.....

      @abhiseth4434 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Firstly women wear attractive clothes to be noticed, same goes for guys.. No one can change this as this sexual tension between genders is natural.
      Point is to change Indian mentality and it cannot happen till the time we gather guts not to celebrate and question our religious texts full of misogyny and objectification of women like how can someone be considered great after losing his wife in betting twice and how can the act of Ram to ask for character proof from his wife on a single comment by an outsider...
      The day we dared to challenge this, equality will start to blossom in our country...

    • @ajeetalbert91
      @ajeetalbert91 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Abhi Seth You can't change Indian mentality unless there is uniform growth where everyone has everything. We are born and brought up in the cities where we speak high morals in modern society. But the guys who come from rural areas for work or the cab drivers who see a lot more stuffs than we common people see, start developing that complex or hatred or whatever you wanna call it very soon. This is added with a situation with extreme lack of inhibitions and high sexual provocation. Very recently, I talked about this topic with my friend's brother who is a psychiatrist. He gave this different perspective which may or may not be right. But, he made sense when he said that I'm not a good person until I face the test to prove myself. With a clear conscious mind and inside a safe bubble, I can rant about how rape is bad for hours. But finally, it all lands down only to a few considerations... High social and financial gap, high sexual saturation in the society etc etc.. You cannot question it anymore here. It's natural law. Just like you said, we guys flaunt around with our abs or pick up lines to attract women. Women wear make ups and lovely dresses to attract men. But at any point, there will be leftovers right.. The leftover women will not even be talked about. They'll be depressed in their own world. This is where the trend of "Every woman is beautiful" came in. It's funny how people have created an artificial sense of beauty and then start a trend to boost the confidence of their version of average looking women..When it comes to men, it'll be the leftover men who tend to make the news coz these are the ones who work amongst all as the cab driver being interviewed here. We can't have a gray zone here. It must be black and white. I mean we should either be a conserved society where we strongly stand against premarital sex and free porn or we should be a free minded society like the west where almost everyone gets a date,love or sex and we forget these things and focus on improving ourselves.. India isn't like this.. We are in the middle zone or a transition zone as I see it. We are what we are as a product of consumerism. They(social devils as we call them) are and they will be so for a long time. In fact, this will worsen in the next generation. As I said before, you can't control it and there is no point too. Just like Piyali said, even boys do get raped. This will always happen. The trend of young boys getting raped is not common( although it does exist) in India as of now. But it'll be on the rise soon. We can try to change it by doing something which our parents failed to do to us. We can try to teach sex education or the prom culture in an unbiased way to our kids if we are really fit to teach the same. You can only shape up the innocent minds to become fine souls. We, adults, have already become corrupted. This is the least hope which I have personally.

      @abhiseth4434 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ajeet Albert I agree with your rational views but I feel rather than difference in economic statues or city against rural the biggest reason in gender segregation. If look closely most of these incidences take place in the UP , haryana , MP etc and not Maharashtra or most of south india. The reason is boys have not interacted much with girls so they know nothing about the opposite gender and also creates sexual frustration more over they have always seen his mother and sister under his father's thumb...
      As u said 2 choices....
      In my modest opinion they only way is to give social freedom to all and such hideous crimes with reduce if not eradicate it completely as human society can never be 100% crime free....

      ** Regardless of your gender, give this list a good read, it might save you someday **
      1. Use pepper spray. Temporarily blind them so you have time to escape.
      2. Raise voice/show confidence and retaliate either by sarcastic taunts or being Loud and very assertive, since they would generally not expect a woman to answer back without showing fear or irritation. It also attracts attention from others at least. Either behave cowardly or else bravely according to the situation and possible outcomes.
      3. In case of defence attacks in response to them, try your BEST to aim for the crotch, from front or back. it’s the best logical way to get a man down no matter how big they are. Either kick, punch or grab the crotch as hard as possible. if done properly, it gives their whole nervous system a good shock to temporarily stop them.
      And also aim for attacking the eyes somehow. Either by pepper spray, or a punch, slap or prick with fingers. **Use nails.
      4. Use some wise self defence moves (very rewarding if you know which moves to use when)
      5. If you can activate an emergency call before they get the chance to grab hold of your belongings, do it as calmly and swiftly as you can. keep the process down to a single/double click on your phone somehow without unlocking.
      6. Use other objects around you to throw at them or at least divert or slow them down while you try to escape.
      7. Use matchstick/fuel combinations (worst case scenario since it’s a matter of life and death)
      8. Always keep a stole/shawl with you. Be on the lookout for a crowded area, get into it, wear your shawl/stole, merge with the crowd, and navigate calmly but swiftly until you lose them. Keep breathing, stay confident that you can outsmart them and be aware.
      !! -->> Women need to take FULL advantage of their clothing and garments, to protect themselves or even use in defense or attack moves (E.g. Strangling the attacker with your Dupatta. Or using any alcohol based cosmetics to your advantage.)
      REMEMBER --> In a general gang situation, 1 person is usually the leader, and the others are their 'chamchas'. Bring the leader down if you can recognize them, and the rest of the gang would usually be more fearful and possibly get out of your way. Or else they just become mentally weaker as their leader is taken out (even if temporarily), which makes your job easier to save yourself somehow.
      ALWAYS remember that no matter how much problems are occurring around you daily, practice proper posture, confident and assertive communication, and build a strong network, on a DAILY BASIS. These will not just help you think clearly and quickly, but even give you more contacts to get help from when in real need.

  • @nikhilgupta5082
    @nikhilgupta5082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The question "Do Skirts, Smoking & Drinking Cause Rape?" looks somewhat ambiguous to me since it assumes more than what is just asked. When the anchor asks this question, she is not looking for a correlational study, but she is more interested in the aspect about who is responsible, which makes the question unclear since that was not specified. "Responsibility" and "Causation" are two very separate things.
    If you ask me whether short skirts and alcohol increase the chances of rape/cause rape, I would probably agree ("probably" since I don't really have any data to back my claim and it's just my intuition). I don't think there's any Iron Age mindset here. Guys will look at her. That happens, isn't it? But that doesn't mean the girl is responsible if anything happens. Obviously, the guy is at fault, but if some of my (girl) friend go out at night like that, I would still suggest her to be cautious, have some pepper spray or do something as a precaution. I hope I don't offend any feminist here, but this is what I feel is pragmatic in the case. Of course, guys need to change their mindset and society has a role here. Till that doesn't happen, you got to take measures to be safe right?

    What?? The anchor here itself shaking her head when they said about the dress... Its only our mindset that needs to be changed.. There isn't a rule about dress, whatever it's comfortable with,you go with that.. And finally,don't make such stupid questions on whether the rape has to be blame on girls... The fault is completely on the rapist... Changed your mindset for the good brothers!!!

    Should the girl have the right to wear short dresses anywhere anytime? - Hell Yes!
    Should the girl wear short dresses anywhere anytime? - in a country like India, may be not.
    Our society is far from ideal or perfect. We are not at a level where we can afford to take risk by dressing so-called provocatively in a place where we know the guys are waiting to rape you with eyes if not in action. Pls dress according to the surroundings. In the name of feminism, dont wear a mini dress to village in Haryana. End of day, if you get molested it's absolutely not your fault but if it can be avoided, why not. If you are sure of your safety ( self defense skills, grouo of friends, security), go ahead. But otherwise why risk your life. Again, know the crowd you are going to interact with and tweak your choices for the occasion, not your entire life.
    It is a pedestrian's right to be able to cross the road fearlessly on zebra crossing. Can you do it in india? Hell no.. You take precautions to minimize the risk inspite of lawfully having the right to cross the road.
    The day we, as a society , grow to the next level, pedestrians will have the ultimate right of way and people including guys will have the right of dressing. Until then..little precaution doesn't hurt.

      @Unsung Songs and in that time, men were not rapeing women who were outbranching from patriarchial norms of working and dressing.
      Somehow or the other , this rape situation is hampering the ideal egalitarian work model.
      In the lower stratas of our society, ie: slums, women work just as much as men, sometimes more. Because men are alcoholics and mostly waste all of their money in their addictions. Still they feel its their right, to come back, exploit their wives, and extract money from them, sexually exploit them and even physically abuse them. In the slums, the woman's money runs the bread and butter and the man's earned money just serves his addictions. That goes to say that work- equality or even superiority in earnings does not counter the deep rooted patriarchy.
      Aadmi maarta hai. Kyunki wo maar sakta hai. Aur pati devta hai. Aur isliye aurat sehti hai. This is the norm. In 85% bpl families.
      Women not working is a design in middle class and well to do families. May be they could counter their fate by working to some extent.
      But again, Dr Priyanka Reddy was a middle class female, educated, doctor, was dressed "appropriately", was raped by truck drivers. So you never know who decides you are their prey and when or for what reasons.
      With this mindset, a woman is left at the mercy of the situation. A dress doesnt matter.
      When babies of 6month age are being raped by their family members ... What to do. There is no escape at this point.
      I guess we should wear whatever we want, because we would get raped anyway. And killed later. So why not enjoy our limited lives the way we want.
      The amount of times I have felt unsafe/ been groped right from the age of 11, I dont think it is easy to live through the age of 60 years without being a victim of a full blown sexual assault.

    Okay guys.. Let us all admit this that we boys and girls.. We all want to give this freedom to our sisters, friends, girlfriends everybody but again are they safe in that way? That is a bigger question. I come from a tier 2 city and it would be embarrassing and awkward to many girls to wear anything such as she will be subject to many stares and no one wants to be stared every now and then.
    It needs to be normalised then it can happen and our Indian culture stops people from normalising it and hence stares.
