As badass a rock band as ever was.
The 'bullets' refer to the old Billboard song chart ratings. "Shooting up the charts like a bullet" was the term used when a record was hot. When Skynyrd's songs were falling off the charts, Ronnie wrote this.
you can say it was inspired by the politics of the record companies and how they marketed or failed to market the music to radio stations. Give Me Back My Bullets was a cry to those executive to get their shit together and keep them on the charts.

You are close. Yes it was, and still is, used for a hot song. But, there is an actual bullet point symbol printed next to the title meaning it was rising fast. So, if it was 24 with a bullet today, it will be much higher next week.
Ronnie was as real as it gets. He wasn't a traditional front man because he wasn't a poser. He was just himself. One of my faves from them was "Whiskey Rocker Roller" which wasn't one of their big hits.

There was no auto tune in the 70's. That's partly why in my opinion the singers were just better. The bands were better and the music was better.
Spot on. Another reason is that music was more of an organic product in those times than it is now. "Good" music grows like a tree out of the ground; most commerical music these days is put together like stage prop trees made out of lumber, nails, wire, glue, paper, and paint. They both look like trees, but on close inspection, there is a clear difference: one is alive and the other just an imitation.

This was before Steve Gaines joined the group. His sister Cassie was a back up singer and told Ronnie how good he was. So Steve auditioned and Ronnie loved him. Ronnie said that before Steve came along that Gary and Allen seemed to be getting a little bored, not playing as good as they were known for. When Steve came in Ronnie said he brought them back to life trying to Out do each other....
This album was Lynyrd Skynyrd at their lean and basic best during the time when Ed King had left the group as the band's 3rd guitarist and a few months before they would come into contact with and eventually fill the opening with Steve Gaines. All the guitar work during this stretch was done by Gary Rossington and Allen Collins who were a very formidable twin lead duo even without a 3rd guitarist in their own right.
Have you heard of the Rossington-Collins Band? Please listen to the song "Don't Misunderstand Me". An awesome song!! 4 of the 6 surviving members of Skynyrd decided to form a band and called it The Rossington Collins Band named after Gary Rossington and Alan Collins (2 guitar players). The difference with this band is that they decided to include a female lead singer by the name of Dale Krantz. Their 1980 debut album went gold with this song being the "hook". Days after Rossington-Collins started to tour as a new band, Collins' wife died of a hemorrhage and the rest of the tour was cancelled. By 1986, Collins had gotten the band back together and was back in a relationship, but tragedy would strike again when the car he was driving (while intoxicated) crashed killing his girlfriend and paralyzing Collins, leaving the man who played one of rock's most iconic solos on Free Bird, unable to play the guitar. Collins would pass away in 1990 at the age of 37 due to pneumonia. Please give this song a listen, it's really great!!

He was asked once about this and said something like " If you have to write it down it can't be very important", (I remember someone being interviewed saying something like this on tv).
The 1970's possibly held the greatest number of "Super Groups" ever in history. What classifies a title such as that? Any band that can sell out an entire Football stadium with fans night after night! That is a rare accomplishment by any band, but the 70's? The Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Skynyard, AC/DC and several others could pull that off & were all touring back then. Now, tell me how many "Super Groups" there are today? Not very many, & not as many as back then for sure.
Yeah, the drummer is Artimus Pyle, and is the reason I started playing. If you have Showtime, you need to watch the movie, IF I LEAVE HERE TOMORROW. It chronicles their career, plane crash and the reformation of the band. The drummer and I think Billy, keys ran through the woods and swamp after the crash and got help. Otherwise, everyone may have died. They were injured themselves.
Billy Powell got caught telling some pretty big lies about what happened & the past he played. It was just Artimus who ran for help
My favorite Skynyrd song. Sounds just like the studio version. "tell all them pencil pushers you better get out of my way."
Never mind a top southern band (Almond Brothers the originators), but one of the best rock bands ever. The guitar interplay was phenomenal, but the keyboards, arrangements, everyone was on top of their game.
This was cool to see live, (on your own time) if take the time to listen to the studio version of this track, it's so clean and very powerful. They are so very unique. What is amazing to me is how Southern Rock was birthed from a few southern states: Alabama, Georgia and Florida yet still it impacted the the world in a very big way. Southern Rock is huge in Europe. Lynyrd Skynyrd was known for being God fearing, party hard with attitude. I've met a few of these guys and they were always gentlemen. Thank you for reacting to more Skynyrd. Love you brother.

We are lucky that Bill Graham's Winterland Auditorium had the foresight to film all the shows booked into that venue. How awesome is it that these film reels exists and are being released in the digital age.

I never thought about it until you mentioned it, brother. I now believe this is the rawest rock group as well. I don't like perfection myself. Mistakes show we are human. that's why I prefer live. Great reaction as always.
I say it every time: THEY ARE MY FAVORITES. I believe this is the show that Ronnie sings while being sick.
Bands relied on their engineers and roadies and their stage monitor speakers, to know what was going on. That's just how it was.

Great choice!.. one of my favorite Skynyrd tunes, a more obscure cut. 2 more excellent songs from the same LP are "Double Trouble" and "I've Got the Same Old Blues"..

Skynyrd is one of those great bands. Though not my fave it was a band I had to see live before they ended. Many great songs and an unbelievable story of success and tragedy

Artemis Pyle was underrated as was the entire band. Skynyrd is perhaps the Greatest Rock Band Ever!
Saw Skynyrd in Mableton Ga. in a Jerry Lewis Cinema theatre when I was 16. They hadn't made the big time yet, were selling their 1st album on a table set up in the theatre lobby. Got to meet them all. Was great.

Dead on Bro!!! No DJ or fake digital music just down home southern rock musicianship. Just raw guitars drums and a mic. The rest is just pure talent.
Since you're learning about these bands and the connections etc. Check out the band 38 Special, that Ronnie van Zant's brother, Donnie Van Zant was a co-founder of. They had a couple of great hits as well. Donnie and another younger brother Johnny went on to do a couple of albums under the name Van Zant. "Brother" is one of my favorite CDs. Great music!! Johnny had also taken over his late brothers position in Skynyrd along with the survivors of the plane crash years later with the album Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 which was the band's first studio album since the 1977 crash.. Former Blackfoot front man Rickey Medlocke also teamed up with them. (Rickey has a long history with Skynyrd going back to the early days of the band. His Dad was the actual inspiration of "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe") Also, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins had a brief stint as the Rossington - Colins Band a few years after the crash. They released two albums in '80 and '81. Skynyrd had their farewell tour a fews years back.
Southern Rock would be the best term to describe Skynyrd. If you ever get the chance, you should check out the documentary ‘Muscle Shoals’. You wouldn’t believe how many songs were written by a small group of white boys in Alabama.

A bullet was a song rising on the charts. A hit song.
When a song shot yo the music charts they use to call them bullets and that is what he is talking about in this song they had some billets hit the music charts and some of the songs the record company released was not as good as some other songs they had on the albums and they got tired of them not listening too them about what songs to release so they wrote this song.

@@neillenet291 That INSANE summer of 76 in UK. As a pale redhead I suffered horribly and sun protection was pretty basic: stay in, was pretty much it. However, I spent a lot of the time at St Valentine's Park Lido (open air swimming pool). Transistor radios everywhere, including mine, small, red with a carrying strap! Great time though. Burnt to a crisp, but great. And yes, they nearly stole The Stones' show from underneath their noses.

Freebird the movie has all the video performances from most of the hits from the original members pre plane crash. They made so much good music and had just started to get their momentum back with the addition of Steve Gaines and the album Street Survivor! That album was phenomenal and I always wonder how many more smash hits they could have made if the crash didn't happen!?? Tragic but Ronnie set his brother up with a gold mine of songs to sing and call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I noticed you always refer to the keyboard player as the "Organist".. that's fine but in Rock music we always have mentioned them as the "Keyboard" player no matter what type of Piano, Organ or what have you.. Keyboard player! Keep up the good work my friend, I love it!

They were one of the favorite bands when I was in high school in the mid 70s. Being a boy from Arkansas just made it that much better. Still no disappointments from me. 😎

They did use mics on the drums in this video they are miked up from the bottom of the drums he never used bottom heads and they didn’t use any reverb that’s why they sounded raw, glad your dipping into skynyrd my all time favorite band!
Really good observations. Skynyrd were rehearsed and drilled to the nth degree. They could reproduce every groove and solo perfectly every time. But, you are bang on it was "raw" - excellent musicianship and well crafted but no frills- straight ahead, no messing about, raw. Typically people go on about Southern "Rock" as a genre, but Skynyrd had a funky, boogie aspect not that common elsewhere. It's evident on this album, on Call me the breeze and once Steve Gaines joined it he amped it up even more.

Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar), and Allen Collins (rhythm guitar) were what was left at this point of the founding members. The second drummer was Artimus Pyle (as seem here), Leon Wilkeson (bass), and Billy Powell plays keys. Rossington and Pyle are the only two alive today, but Pyle has nothing to do with today’s so called Lynyrd Skynyrd.
You got a check out Leonard Skynyrd‘s song called “On the hunt” and “The needle and the spoon” and “Saturday night special” three of the best songs Leonard Skynyrd has written in my opinion
Leonard Skinner was their gym teacher. These guys were noted for rehearsing in a box of a cabin for hours and hours and well you know.
It was called the "Hell House" cuz it was hotter than a motherfucker...about an hour or 2 out of town where they could play as loud as they wanted and do their drugs w/o being bothered by anyone.
One more notable fact about the song... Ronnie told me they had to stop doing the song live because fans were throwing bullets on stage! Skynyrd fact✌️🥃

Early GFR was one of THE rawest live acts ever when they were the power trio. Check out their Live Album, which is totally different than even the rest of their early albums. NO filters, just all the feedback, overdrive, and insane volume. Hard driving as hell, even though it wasn't metal. Their studio albums weren't like that.

The mix is a little tough on this one but it's a good rep of live Skynyrd. The crux of the matter comes through. Good choice, too. It's such a Skynyrd-attitude song. Great stuff.

I also wonder about drum tuning. I think they just tune to feel or maybe to get the most punchy sound. I'm curious what someone who actually plays drums does.

Love this live version and the album, but they were indeed missing the bullets of Ed King here. Glad they reloaded with Steve Gaines and released "Street Survivors".
I saw this tour in Kansas City, May 11 1976, Municipal Auditorium.
This was the first time Steve Gaines played in public with the group.
