Ronnie Van Zant was the singer. The band, Lynyrd Skynyrd was named loosely after their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner. The entire band, Lynyrd Skynyrd was in a horrifying plane crash in '77, and three of the band members were killed, including singer, Ronnie Van Zant.

The name came from the name of his high school gym teacher. Ed King (originally of Strawberry Alarm Clock) is the lead guitarist, arranger and cowrote many songs with Ronnie. So the singer was Ronnie Van Zant, the one holding the beer in the black hat. There were actually two and sometimes three guitar players in the band. Some of the best guitarists ever were in this Band! Check out Freebird live at Knebworth 1976. Even if you have heard it, seeing it live is a whole other experience when they get to the solo/outro of the song. And they probably were all high, drunk, or both lol. Some of the band died in a plane crash in 1977 including Ronnie.

  • @fallonobrien8559

Band named after their gym teacher and lead singer is Ronnie Van Zant.
The song is based on a real-life experience Ronnie Van Zant had at a biker bar in Jacksonville known as The Pastime, having a gun pulled on him for dancing with another man's woman, and thus inspiring him to write the lyrics on his way home. It is memorable for its opening riff and engaging narrative of how the singer was dancing with a girl named Linda Lou at a bar called The Jug when a man, probably the girl's boyfriend or husband, enters with a loaded .44 and catches them, angrily believing her to be cheating. The song's title refers to the chorus, where the interloper begs for a head start out of the bar: "Won't you give me three steps Give me three steps, mister Give me three steps towards the door? Give me three steps Give me three steps, mister And you'll never see me no more.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a band not an individual. They named themselves after a teacher some of them had in High School. The lead singer was Ronnie Van Zant and the band featured 3 guitar players that switched off lead. Check out a video from one of their last concerts for the song "That Smell." This song features a lot of guitar work and you can see them all switching off as well as Ronnie singing.

Following a performance at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 20, 1977, the band boarded a chartered Convair CV-240 bound for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were scheduled to appear at LSU the following night. After running out of fuel the pilots attempted an emergency landing before crashing in a heavily forested area five miles northeast of Gillsburg, Mississippi.[27][28] Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray were killed on impact. Other band members (Collins, Rossington, Wilkeson, Powell, Pyle, and Hawkins), tour manager Ron Eckerman,[29] and several road crew members suffered serious injuries.

The band named the band after their gym teacher who didn't like their long hair even suspending them from school for a few days. Later after decades the gym teacher admitted to liking some of their songs. Ronnie Van Zandt singing. Died in the plane crash they were on with the lead guitar player. Never were the same afterwards. The plane they crashed on was turned down by Aerosmith 6 months earlier for not being up to standards and the pilots were known to do some drinking. Plane ran out of gas and crashed 200 yards before an open field to land on. 10 more seconds of gas and they would have survived.

One of the best Southern Rock bands to ever exist. But there are oh so many more. Check out Molly Hatchet, Black Foot, Marshall Tucker, Credence Clearwater Revival, and so many more.

Lead singer is Ronnie Van Zant. In the background you'll hear Gary Rossington, Artimus Pile, etc. This is the actual band before the plane crash killed half of them. The shit you hear today as "Lynyrd skynyrd" is by Ronnies brother. Sickening

Watch the documentary “If I leave here tomorrow.” It’s their beginning to when their plane crashed. Ronnie Van Zandt and that guitarist you’re hearing, along with the guitarists sister, who was a backup singer, died in the crash in 1977. I saw them at JFK Stadium in Philly. 91,000 people were there.

This song is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night.

The band's name is their high school gym teacher's name. He would always tell the they wouldn't amount to anything and they should get real jobs after high school. So they changed the spelling and named the band after him.

Your listening to what is knows as Southern Rock. This band is from Jacksonville Florida, thats right...DUUUVAAL, and Ronnie Van Zant is singing. He was killed along with Steve Gaines, guitar payer, and his sister Cassie who was a back up singer, when their plane crashed. They had 3 guitarists, Gary Rossington, Steve Gaines and Allen Collins. I live in the Jacksonville area very close to Johnny Van Zant house and see him regularly at the grocery store and Wal Mart. Johnny is a long hair rock dude and usually has his grand kids with him tagging along. In fact the first time I saw him at the grocery store I was standing behind him in line while he was buying diapers and baby food. Hes a very humble and nice guy.
