Biz, there's no bad Skynyrd songs. You should check out some lesser known songs. Mr Banker is phenomenal! Working for MCA, All I Can Do is Write About it, Curtis Lowe, even the newer stuff like Red, White and Blue. They're iconic for a reason. Dive deep my friend. It's a helluva rabbit hole to get lost in. Keep it up Biz, we appreciate you. Greetings from South Carolina 😃

Lynyrd Skynyrd are among one of the finest handcrafted musicians ever. They are the ones who brought southern rock to Germany after the Allman Brothers and brought it to the fore even more up-to-date. Unfortunately, I've only seen them live once, but that was a fucking great party in Hamburg (Germany) at the "Stadtpark". What an energy and joy they brought to the stage - it was just impressive. Thanks for sharing this awesome song and the cool memories of the concert. Best wishes @all from Germany

The great Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple, Kansaa) sat in with them on this song on a live album and raved about what great players they were. He said "If you can't jam with that rhythm section, you don't have a pulse." More Southern Rock you say? Ooh, start with the incredible song Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond.

As someone else mentioned earlier, the bullets he's talking about here aren't actual gun ammo they're the marks that the music charts (Billboard, Cashbox, etc) used to put next to songs that were "hot" and getting a lot of airplay for the week. Radio DJs would say things like "Here's a new song from Lynyrd Skynyrd coming in on the charts this week at number 22 with a bullet!".
He was frustrated with the way the politics (and straight up bribery) of the music business influenced which artists got "bullets" each week, and he felt Lynyrd Skynyrd was getting screwed by the process and their songs weren't getting the attention they deserved. So, he was telling the industry in this song- "Quit f-ing us around, and put the bullets next to our songs on the chart that we've earned!".

Leon Wilkeson on the bass guitar. I personally think he was one of the greatest bass players in rock. This isn't about the kind of bullets you put in a gun, it's about the bullets on their chart listing. They know toriously had a contentious relationship with their record label MCA, they wrote a song specifically about that, but this is basically saying that because they weren't playing by the rules of what MCA wanted, they were getting screwed and they were saying we want our chart listings back. But regardless, it's such a heavy rocking song and it's obviously an angry song, laugh.

"gimme back my bullets" - about writing a hit #1 song. skynyrd had already been real big, nation-wide - ever world-wide - sweet home alabama already. then a somewhat fall from grace. drugs, exhaustion. guitar Ed King had to leave the band. "gimme back" - singer Ronnie Van Zandt, like, "let's get serious" - heavy sound, direct on target lyrics. aiming for - "number 1 with a bullet" as the song climbs up the charts. and it kind of did. next album after this - chris gaines (i know a little) - more deft, plucky guitar, country twang, so great.

The song was very misunderstood. Fans thought that it was a pro-gun song and at concerts, they would throw live ammo on the stage. One time, a broken record was thrown on stage and almost cut a band member. Bassist Leon Wilkeson once fired a starter's pistol into the air to quell the lunacy. For a time, the band wouldn't perform it live for that reason.
The "bullets" being referred to are the "points" on a musical ratings chart, and the band had a bit of a lull after Ed King left in 1975 and Mr. Van Zant was singing about coming back on top. A common misconception is that Mr. Van Zant says, "I've drank enough whiskey to turn a battleship around", but it is in fact "float a battleship around".
The "pencil pushers" in the lyrics are the music company executives and accountants. Referring to firearms, Mr. Van Zant once said, "I think they should sink them all to the bottom". Mr. Van Zant said that he was tired of reading about crime and shootings in the newspapers and on TV news and once admitted to accidentally shooting himself. He was an antique gun collector though.
