my current favorite mario 64 rom hack is called mario 64: decades later. it fully remakes every level in the entire game, and getting all 150 stars will give you a password for a “secret” folder you downloaded with the game, presumably full of goodies and/or luigi (i wouldn’t know, haven’t got that far yet)
One N64 ROM hack I've found myself quite sticking well to is Smash Remix, which takes the original Super Smash Bros. game and expands it greatly, to the point where the Expansion Pak is a requirement; It includes new music, new characters, new stages, new costumes, a gallery for viewing the Classic Mode, and even regional variants for the 12 base characters, not unlike how Hyper Street Fighter II allows players to select previous variants of each of the different fighters. Genuinely it's pretty much the definitive way to play the original SSB, as it only adds to the experience, without changing what's already there. Another one I could possibly recommend is "The Spaceworld 1997 Experience", which uses the leftover OoT content from the F-Zero X overdump cart, and rebuilds + translates a tight estimation to what Ocarina of Time's demo at Spaceworld played like. This hack, alongside others like "The Preservation Project" which recreated Super Mario 64's Shoshinkai 1995 demo, and Luigi's Mansion's "Beta Restoration" which recreates the E3 2001 demo, complete with Chef Ghost that may or may not've been in the real demo (It similarly uses leftover assets, this time left hidden in WarioWare: Get It Together, of all places), not only have a lot of research done on them, but they are also good ways for folk like the TCRF community to cope with prototype builds that probably have a rarer chance of surfacing online than the recent eclipse. Tim Stamper has an actual cart of OoT's Spaceworld 1997 demo, along with an N64 build of Dream: Land of Giants and what might be the latest known build of Twelve Tales: Conker 64 in existence, but those same communities all seem very adamant that Tim won't ever post them online for people to play, and are quite aggregated against him under these conditions, especially considering he still has a few mutual ties to the gaming industry and all that.

It is not a finished product."_ Although getting a bootleg repro cart may be cheaper, it's not really the preferred method of playing the mod on real hardware; If this option can be in your budget, it'd be more ideal to pick up an EverDrive-64 X7 and an SD Card, so you can play the latest build of Smash Remix through there (And also, when a new revision gets released, you can swap out the old version with the newest one). There's plentiful tutorials on how to use an EverDrive-64 online as well, so if you can afford it, I don't think it should be too big a problem.

I often find it hard to sift through the multitude of romhacks, more specifically for the big Nintendo titles like Mario and Zelda games. And I don’t have all the time in the world unfortunately, otherwise I would play every romhack I see! Videos like this one help me gain a curated list of some of the most well-made or iconic ones. I had not even heard of the Paper Mario roguelike, and I would be lying if I said that wasn’t the most interesting game on this list for me.

DKC2 Unveiled is probably the greatest rom hack I've seen. It's about as brilliant as a level swap hack gets, and it's so hard in both level design and secret locations it's beautiful. For anyone who loves Donkey Kong Country 2 but wants something a little bit different, it's an easy recommendation. Also the Newer games are the first rom hacks I ever heard of and considering they came out only four years after NSMBW, it's very impressive.
In case you didnt know Brodute just put out a full SM64 remake that immediately became the best reviewed hack on RHDC (granted who knows if itll stay there).
I love how this doesn't even touch on Pokemon, a series with an insanely thriving ROM hack and fangame community, due to Bino's likely inexperience with the series. A personal new recommendation is PokeRogue, an insanely addictive Pokemon roguelite *_browser game_* - yes, it's a browser game. It's also fully fleshed out and insanely fun.
My first Kaze romhack was the one where Mario was in OoT. I think it was one of the early ones. It deserves a remaster, since his work on the engine has gotten much better since then.
Crazy that Golden Souls and Simons Destiny are from the same person, the quality of all 4 of those is top notch. Since I spend too much time playing Doom wads, I'll recommend Jumpwad, a platforming wad. Also for Doom, Siren if you're looking for something combat focused.
One thing I hope picks up in the modding scene are the original Crash Bandicoot games. It'd be cool to see someone put him in an open zone like the N64 platformers instead of the usual hallways he was restricted to. I think there's some potential there, especially if Crash 3 was used as a base considering the wide variety of gameplay mechanics.
Can't forget Smash Remix, Beyond Melee, The Akaneia Build for Melee, Paper Mario Pro Mode/Master Quest, Project+ for Smash Bros. Brawl, and Paper Mario TTYD Hero mode which is still in the making but has demos to try.
For the super mario world section: you should learn kaizo-style hacks. It's surprisingly easy to pickup, you just need to learn advance mechanics like Regrabs, and practice a lot. I love kaizo-style hacks so much. There are some really approachable and reasonable ones that anyone can start with.

The best thing about rom hacks is the lack of online guides. Unlike the base game where everything is scoped out by millions of eyes, most ROM hacks dont have much documentation. It's a bit like the old days of not being able to look up every solution to a puzzle.
for Luigi's Mansion romhacks you gotta try "Sweet Home" by Catley. Luigi basically takes a house call for ghost catching and it's very well made. feels like a small straight to DVD sequel of Luigi's Mansion
If I ever get a PC, I definitely plan on playing these, especially plumber for all seasons since the original SMW is one of my favorite games of all time.
For your question in the end "should I mention any other hacks." I'd say give Brutal Mario a quick mention for its history and customization. It's older now but for those who never heard of it.

I tried like the most casual ones the other day and like immedately I'm just failing lmao like some of these jumps feel impossible! But I feel like I know all the base mechanics, triple jump, double jump, kick jump, dive jump, wall kicking, back flips, backwards kick. One of them is this jump in a rom hack called Eureka where you jump from a red mushroom to like a tall pillar in like the first level. I've tired dozens of times and can't even get close, but I don't see another way to progress in that direction. The same thing happened in Serene fusion, where in the first level, you fall into this sandy pit and you have to climb out to get a star, well I get a few jump into it when I hit up this wooden platform facing some walls; and then you just can't go anywhere? I feel like I'm going crazy encountering all these casual rom hacks with stuff I seeming literally can't do; I even beat the original Mario 64! Am I just that bad? I feel like I'm missing something that like rom hack players just know.
I'll come back to watch this later. Saw the first 6 minutes and it was good. Have you tried Brodute's Super Mario 64 Decades Later that just came out this March, literally days ago? My man, new peak Mario hack just dropped The twist is... you have to make it yourself. It's called Mario Builder 64, amd it's similar to Kaze's Mario Maker 64, only like... 10x better, made by the same guy who did Beyond the Cursed Mirror.
I wish for a Banjo Tooie hack that adds back in all the levels from Kazooie + the last world Cauldron Keep that was intended for the original release of Tooie.
A few I should mention: Sonic robo blast 2 (and sonic robo blast 2 Kart) is a sonic game made from a doom mod and its fucking fantastic, also smash bros remix is a great one
