    Great Talk. Dr Fettke you are a champion.
    Changing your lifestyle to HFLC and IM has been truly transformational in regards to health and biological age for me, my sister..and some of my friends who dared first then committed to this change. I have tried to help others but they rather lice in a world of denial and follow conversational ways down the road to disease and complications.
    Now i still try and help people who ask how to do it. However, they have to convince themselves. Its so tedious sending people so much compelling information only either to see that its too much a change or that they cant be bothered going throughit..even if its truly for their own benefit.

    Thank you, Dr Fettke, for taking this stand for the health of the population: it has cost you greatly but you do not back down and give in.
    A succinct, calm and understated critique of the problem and solution. I am one of many who have woken up to the insanity of current dietary guidelines and the horrific history of their inception.
    As a victim of 4 decades of low fat high carb dieting (my entire teen and adult life) I ended up seriously depressed, obese and physically/mentally/emotionally devastated by my failing health as I approached retirement years.
    It was at this point I was prepared to try cutting out carbs, but only for a month, because I didn't think I could cope without them (addiction, of course). Well, that was two and a half years ago and OMG the difference to my life and mental/physical/emotional health is spectacular. I eat very low carb and keep away from all the sweet tastes in particular. I prefer ketosis because I am still reducing my own fat stores to a healthier level (down from 60% to 27%). I do Intermittant Fasting too, eating lunch and dinner (16/8 or 18/6). Because of good protein and fat intake (animal based mostly) I do not need to snack in between and NEVER feel hunger, not ever.
    When I started this lifestyle the NO HUNGER side effect was a revelation and awesome. Low fat high carb diets always left me hungry and needing to snack in between meals so I ended up eating six times a day (or more) and going on binges when it finally got too much. What a miserable existence for my entire adult life!
    I would love everyone like me to understand that there is an answer. It is people like Gary, who but their reputation on the line (TIm Noakes is another one) that are the real heroes.

    Fabulous talk that I will share far and wide. The basic science will be easy for people to understand - great analogies. We need to spread this message. I was talking to a Nurse Practitioner who was questioning my success. She said "oh, I don't have a problem with sugar (meaning white, refined). My problem is with potatoes and bread." FACE PALM. She didn't know that potatoes and bread are sugar. I had to explain to her - and the look on her face. Priceless. So anyhow, we have a lot of work to do - share this!

    Thank you so much for this video. My dad has recently been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. The diagnosis comes a year after I discovered he most likely had diabetes after astronomically high readings on a urine strips test (I was using acetoacetate/glucose strips for my own keto diet ventures).
    The doctors are insistent on putting him on Metformin and preach a LFHC diet. Of course I'm highly disagreeable about this and every day I show my dad the studies and talks like these online, but the confusion and distrust is obvious.
    When I read the nutritional advice outlined on the Australian Heart Foundation website it scares me. Diabetes Victoria have a factsheet dispelling diabetes myths, the first one infers that sugar does not cause diabetes.
    Why would my dad listen to me telling him to eat fatty animal products instead of following the dietary guidelines and doctor's advice? Not to mention going against the engrained fear of cholesterol and saturated fat.
    Dr. Fettke is doing a wonderful thing and I hope very soon advising diabetes patients to follow a LCHF diet will be common practice.

      Jessica Rose Burrowes , having your dad read the book "The Big Fat Surprise" by investigative journalist Nina Teicholz might help. She does an excellent job explaining all the corrupt "science" and political mischief that gave the USA the food pyramid and HCLF diet and convinced the rest of the world to do likewise.
      For something easier, have your dad watch this video of Dr. Tim Noakes (video time 16 minutes 6 minutes):
      th-cam.com/video/RLgctEe5ANM/w-d-xo.html
      That video explains how the publicly-traded corporation food industry donates money to non-profit "health" organizations and uses those those non-profits to keep us eating unhealthy food.

    Excellent video Dr Fettke..put very simply..have been doing keto now for 3mths and awaiting my HbA1c results taken today...I agree that I am definitely carbohydrate intolerant..I am now treating carbs like having an addiction or allergy...staying away from it altogether..less than 20gms/day...moderate protein according to Height and IBW..and double that in good fats for satiety..and finding I am eating far less and cheaper than on medication. I myself (retired RN) am off all medication except Metformin as it has many other benefits for people with diabetes..it does not work on lowering glucose or producing more insulin. I think you need to reassess that statement..otherwise I just wish that more doctors and dieticians, in public and private sectors would get onboard with this Way Of Eating..we can turn this epidemic around so easily..many thanks

    Every time I go off my lower carb diet, such as consistently eating more than 25% carbs: grains/starch/sugar; my diabetic markers go up and so does my weight. When I do it long enough, my triglycerides climb through the roof and HDL go way down. With weight gain, every time I go above 190 lbs., my blood pressure also increases. When I go back to grain-free, sugar-free, and starch-free everything reverses.

    3:38 That's put a little strange : just because a disease is chronic doesn't mean it's not preventable.
    Chronic just means that once you have it, you can't get rid of it. That makes it even more important to try to prevent it.
    Ofcourse, it is possible that diabetes is both preventable and not a chronic disease. But the terms don"t exclude each other, which seems to be implied here.

    • @Vannie1958
      @Vannie1958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aren't most chronic diseases preventable?

  • @peterfaber9316
    @peterfaber9316 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    You'd almost think he's depressed because of what people are doing to themselves. But luckily, the small dry jokes in between compensate for that.
    But I get it. It is sort of frustrating when you see obese people, frustrated because they can't keep their blood sugar levels under controll, while eating small pieces of chocolate every one or two hours......
    It's kind of hidden, but if you pay attention, you realize how many people are taking medication every day; diabetes medications are rarely taken by them selves, they are often taken together with blood pressure medication and cholesterol medication.
    You go low carb and often within months you don't need any medication anymore.
    It makes you wonder why medications are preferred over cutting carbs.... I can think of only one reason,... It's an addiction,... as strong as addictions to alcohol and nicotine.
    But you can't say that. People get upset with you if you insist. Like an alcoholic getting upset when you take away his booze.
    I guess it can be depressing when you care. Only ignorance can prevent that type of depression,...... And it amazes me how many people are willfully ignorant. And they are,... ignorant on purpose. You know this is true when people actively try to cut you off by changing the subject or simply start talking about other things with other people, straight in your face..... which makes it very easy to apply the other strategy to prevent getting depressed:
    you just,... don't,... care.

    • @thomaskeets3194
      @thomaskeets3194 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Peter Faber You can’t always blame the individual. What about the hidden agenda of the pharmaceutical companies and doctors and dietitians? When I was diagnosed, I did my research and decided no medication and a ketogenic diet was the way to go much to the dismay of my doctor and the dietitian who shaking her head said, take the medication and you will need to eat 30 grams of carbs per meal! ??? Thankfully, I did not listen to either of them and went with current research. 4 years later and my diabetes is reversed with a normal A1C. Education and updated research needs to come from the so-called professionals! They are the ones who should be educating people on how to be healthy not keeping them sick and medication dependent.

      Oh you're not kidding. It's really hard to keep quiet and not go crazy when a person who is visibly suffering stands there and essentially says "I refuse to make myself better". Especially if it's someone you care about.

    • @peterfaber9316
      @peterfaber9316 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thomas Keets Yes, but in my opinion that only applies to people with below average IQ and/or uneducated people who simply never learned to think for themselves. I'm not disrespecting these people. They should get better help. But the doctors and dieticians aren't trying to hurt people. They really believe they are giving the right advice.
      But I'm not talking about these kinds of people. I"m talking about educated people with above average IQ, one is a doctor for crying out loud. And still... diabetics, high carb diets, some obese, some not,...... And when you suggest that perhaps lowering glucose intake to lower glucose levels might be an idea,.... It's like poking a corpse expecting it to say "ouch".... Why should I care?

    • @kimberlycooper4170
      @kimberlycooper4170 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diana , taking a college human anatomy and physiology is very useful in helping people understand how the body works.
      There are 3 macronutrients: fat, protein, and carbohydrate. The body metabolizes them differently. The body does not turn fat into blood sugar. The body turns excess protein into blood glucose. The body turns all carbohydrates into blood glucose.
      When blood glucose increases in the blood vessels, the body's sensors sense the increase and tell the pancreas to increase insulin production. Insulin has two jobs:
      (1) Put the blood glucose into the body's cells so that they can use it for fuel to do their jobs.
      (2) Store excess blood glucose (excess fuel) in the fat cells and the liver. That is how people get fat and get a fatty liver. It's from carbohydrates, not fats.
      When we stop eating, our digestive system empties of food and, thus, discontinues sending blood glucose to the blood vessels. When the body's sensors sense the decrease in blood glucose, the body's sensors tell the pancreas to decrease insulin production and increase glucagon production. Glucagon's job is to take the stored excess fuel out if the fat cells and liver and put that excess fuel back in the blood vessels so that the body's cells can use that stored fuel to do their jobs. That is how we lose weight and stop being fat.
      Insulin and glucagon are hormones. The book "The Obesity Code" by Dr Jason Fung MD explains how the hormones leptin ghrelin and cortisol cause a person to gain or lose weight, too.
      Things that contain a high percentage of carbohydrates are sugar, grains, dried beans, and potatoes. Fruits have a high percentage of carbohydrates, but not as high as sugar, grains, dried beans, and potatoes.

    • @kimberlycooper4170
      @kimberlycooper4170 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peter Faber , carbohydrates can set up a horrid craving for high-carbohydrate foods. I found that the only way to stop the craving is to go on a water fast for at least 2 1/2 days. We need hospitals and clinics to set up "therapeutic fasting wards" so that people can go to be assisted with clearing the carbohydrates from their bodies.
      According to the documentary "Science of Fasting", Germany has such fasting clinics.

    crime syndicates. In the year 1994, in one of Sydney hospital's public ward , one patient's leg must have been amputated over the knee, just a few days ago. I was a new patient in the ward just a few beds away from the leg- amputated man. 2doctors arrived at his bed , one of the doctor asks ," how is your stump ,no pain ?" .Patient answers" not much" The second doctor looks at what the patient eats as a snack, Mars bars ,some other candies, cake etc., etc. .With contempt in his voice," do you eat all of those sweets?" The leg amputated man says ,"yes" ,visitors brought them. the doctor doesn't make any comment .

    Another doctor spreading the real truth of our food intake!!
    Wish many more would jump on this bandwagon and forgo pharmaceutical 'under the table' monies.
    But this speech, along with a few other doctors spouting truth, leads me to a question... all of these carbs, we know how America got sick eating them, but how did the countries they originated from have them as their main staple??
    For instance... southeast Asian countries with Rice?
    Italy and Greece with Pasta?
    Ireland with Potatoes?
    Mexico and South America with Breads?
    Has anyone or group looked into this starting history??

  • @maricamaas5555
    @maricamaas5555 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting to add to list of ailments: Bread disease / Wheat schitzophrenia is noted as an unfortunate disease of the brain.
    Burning too much animal protien can also cause insulin resistance and lactic acidosis - as described by Darren Schmidt D.C. ?
    Obesity is not healthy, yet being overweight is not necessarily an indicator of being unhealthy; especially since the BMI is changed at a whim. There are more with 'normal' weight who are metabolically ill.
    It is increasingly troublesome how being super-thin is seen as desirable; leading to mental distress, eating disorders, infertility and justification for pushing the vegan cult's agenda.

    I first learned of the nutritional nonsense called, “My Plate” after being diagnosed with diabetes. Having been raised overseas as an Air Force brat I was exposed to government propaganda day in and day out, the result of which was I learned to recognize propaganda when I heard it.
    “My Plate” is pure propaganda.
    Even way back then I realized the inconsistency of prescribing glucose (carbs) to someone who’s body was failing at processing glucose. Unfortunately, I merely recognized it. I didn’t know if it was safe to take the next logical step, which would be to totally cut out all carbs from my diet. Everyone told me that was too “extreme”.

    I believe keto is good for the majority of diabetics and pre diabetics, but there is a minority of them that do worse than low fat high carbs. Some type 1 diabetics get glucagon too high and does better with fibrous carbs. For some people protein and fat causes more insulin resistance than carbs. So I disagree with one size fits all.
    I believe that low carb will become more popular in the next few years and will help to reverse alot of diseases and there will be alot of low carb practitioners but it will never be universal diet for insulin resistance.
