    Recently received an upgrade offer of 60K points from Amex Gold to Platinum and I took it! I may downgrade to Gold after 12 months and wait for another upgrade offer. Hopefully, I can bounce back and forth between these two indefinitely. Plan to apply for the Amex Schwab Platinum in 2021.

      What was your spend requirement for upgrade off?

  • @DalHarpJr
    @DalHarpJr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've never received a retention or upgrade offer from AmEx for any of the cards I have. I wanted to upgrade from a Delta Gold to Platinum for the longest time. And every time I call to ask about upgrade offers to the Platinum they never have them. So last week with all the changes coming to Delta cards, I upgraded to the Delta Platinum with zero upgrade points. Earlier this year when my Platinum AmEx renewed, I called in for a retention offer and nothing! AmEx basically told me, that as good in value as the Platinum card is, we really don't give retention offers for this card!

    • @JamRTSilva
      @JamRTSilva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DalHarpJr I just got my retention offer (30,000 MR points after $3000/3 months) posted on my account last week. Amex Platinum.

    • @DalHarpJr
      @DalHarpJr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jam R.T. Silva... You’re lucky! How long have you had your card? This was my first year with the Platinum and I put well over $25K spend on it in that year. Guess YMMV is the truth... No retention offer love for me!😞

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DalHarpJr That's surprising given the spend. I generally don't like taking upgrade offers unless you've had the card in the past (burning an intro bonus): www.asksebby.com/blog/should-you-upgrade-your-american-express-card

    • @JamRTSilva
      @JamRTSilva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DalHarpJr I’ve had the card since May 2018. I barely spent $8,000 last year. ( That includes the $550 )
      My renewal fee posted on June 19 of this year. I paid my bill ( including the $550 ) on July 13 and called Amex for retention offer on the 17th.

    • @DalHarpJr
      @DalHarpJr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jam R.T. Silva... Again, good for you! There's obviously no "One size fits all" theory when it comes to these retention/ upgrade offers. AmEx was pretty much like, take it or leave it. I clearly didn't put as much spend on my card in 2019 like I did in 2018. When my annual fee hits in Dec./Jan. I'll be revisiting card retention with the AmEx reps. Hopefully I'll get it this time. Thank you!

    Wait,... if upgrading and downgrading requires 12 months due (Card act law), then how did you do downgrade and upgrade so instantly? (Big question mark)

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CARD Act is related to opening a new card, not product changes: www.asksebby.com/blog/what-is-the-credit-card-accountability-responsibility-and-disclosure-act-of-2009-card-act
      You can upgrade/downgrade at will after the first 12 months, as long as you're not breaking any other terms (i.e., can't downgrade for 12 months after taking an upgrade offer w/ Amex).

    Interesting strategies, Sebby. I agree an upgrade from Chase has strings attached and you must choose wisely (for all the points you made - pun)!! I also agree that your strategies for AMEX are complicated but also more fun. There is a lot of flexibility to do things with AMEX that you can't do with other banks. Hi Sebby. Great informative video. I'm new to Amex, well about a year now and I started with the Blue cash preferred card which is about to hit the annual fee. I just got the green card and hilton no annual fee in the last month. I noticed on the website that it's offering me an upgrade to the platinum, aspire and surpass. I'm not interested in the platinum but the other two Hiltons I am. However, there is no upgrade bonus, so I'm thinking I need to wait till there is or apply later down the line to get a good sign up bonus. After watching your video, I believe I'm going to wait and apply when I get a sign up bonus. What do you think? Oh and I tried to apply yesterday for the Aspire but it said I wouldn't get a sign on bonus so I canceled application. Maybe because I just got two sign on bonuses with the recent two cards I just received. Any thoughts on that too? Thank you so much. I just subscribed to your channel.

    I just downgraded to a AMEX Green card from a Gold card. Have you heard of any upgrade offers from Green to Gold?
    I figure I will keep the Green for the next 6 months as my spending has changed, and I recently upgraded my CSP to CSR, because the benefits now outweighed waiting another 2 years for me. I will be going back to AMEX later on, and getting the sign up bonus for the Platinum and am hoping for an upgrade bonus back to Gold.
