Lol I had to figure this one out first. And later I googled it and found this. At first I had just tripods, made from walkingsticks. Then I figured out the "top ledge" to prevent the tops of the two Eiffeltowers to come together. I know now it is called ridge pole. Great upload thx! And to anyone out there: If you don't find sturdy poles, just ad more poles. It may look funny, but the only real trick to this structure is the ridge pole. Other than that it can be tripods, four, five sixpods. It is two towers and a log to keep them apart. Anyway great upload thx!!
Another “outstanding” video, it’s a shame to hear that these skill videos don’t do as well as gear reviews. I love your gear reviews but it’s a shame that people don’t see the value in the skills you have. You do a great job of explaining thoroughly without making it dry or boring. Please keep up the great work!
As a Boy Scout, our troop constructed a 30-foot tower at a jamboree using four big logs and a bunch of cross-members using only knot-skills. I used a clove-hitch as my foundation knot and a clove-hitch as my finish knot on my side with all the standard lashing and frapping that you used on your structure. If I had known about the constrictor knot and the double constrictor knot, I would have used that. The only problem is, we would've had to cut all the knots to take it down. Constrictor knots are darn near permanent.
That was 50 years ago but just as pertinent today.

Great video! This is a set up that has been pretty well known in the hammock camping world for several years now, but is not really in the main stream. Thanks for putting it out there if that others can take advantage as well! Corporal Kelly said this works for up to a 9’ hammock. In reality, with a proper 30° + sag, it will work for up to a 14’ hammock! For most people, it is most comfortable to use a hammock at least 11’ feet in length. This setup is perfect for that.

Bsfcc 04 It was actually built this way first by “Old Dog”! Then “Turtle Lady” came along with her variation, and it became the “modern” turtledog stand. But it was always bushcraft first.

Check out his walmart video. It’s fantastic and gets you set up relatively inexpensively even if you buy everything. If you can, practice, practice, practice in your back yard or basement or even the family room. Make it easy on yourself at first and if your desire increases take on more challenges. You get just as warm lighting a commercial fire log with a bic lighter as you do collecting and processing timber and lighting it with a ferro rod. Good luck, you’ve found an excellent channel to get you started and make you better.

Very Nice. I have been doing this for years when at public camping sites (taking the grand kids camping) . Mostly because there are no trees in the immediate camp area , and I have gotten a lot of people that come by ,and give the ol' Thumbs up.
I love that you made this video. I went exploring in a new area 2 years ago. I found an old mine shaft that had a buggy enough entrance that I was able to set up camp in it. But because it was made of brick I had nothing to hang my hammock to. So I built the same thing but in a smaller scale. It was awesome plus it got the job done with very little effort! Thank you for sharing this
Well done Corporal. This is the best solution to this problem I have ever seen. David Pearson showed a partial solution some time ago but it wasn't as complete as what you showed here. Your lashing skills are very good. I do prefer the constrictor knot to the timber hitch. That being said, I absolutely applaud your knowledge of knots and your rope skills. You and Dave Cantebury are both masters of that art. Thanks.

I believe there is a method that you do not need a ridge pole. You can hang the hammock pulling down the tripod not hanging on the tripod.

Wagner Mendel The only way to do that is if you were to stake it out. You really need the ridgepole to deal with the compression forces of the hammock pulling toward the center.
Good demo. Simple, direct and short. I made one like this using military surplus aluminum radio communication masts. 42 inch sections. Ok for car camping only, of course.

This is a perfect for a young boy scout learning project. Thank you. I don't mean to sound like this is a childish project, quite the contrary. The details are clear, easy to follow and thorough which is exactly what the scouters need. I will definitely give this a try out as soon as the weather breaks here where I am.

This is outstanding. I'm hitting the coast and doing a couple day hike on the beach. I hadn't intended to bring my hammock, but, I'm going to give this a go with drift wood. Thank you for going more in depth on the tripod lashing. Please keep the instructional vids coming!

This is badass brotha. I have my Scout troop build that exact same setup minus the hammock as a shelter building exercise for a larger tarp shelter that's big enough to fit everyone in the troop.
I did something similar in Algonquin park was super comfortable camping and light weight! Thanks for the videos.

Right on brother! These tripods do work greatly for those that haven't tried.I have 2 set up in my yard for hammocks considering the few trees in our yard are to big in diameter to tie off with. Working on a perma shelter down behind my place which is connected to a national Forrest,plan to do the same there though for dual hammocks!

Nice job.. i believe you could make them to do work like you would a Gin pole. .Would be good for rescuin someone over a small cliff o or like a small adandond well in the woods. l lifting heavy items in a pinch. might need a bigger diameter for that. Would probably need a thicker rope also.
i learned the gin pole basics in US Army Egigneers course in 1977. . Also for rescue , the FD training as a civilian. Multitasking stuff you just did. I just forget the gin pole lashings though Don't remember if they would be the same.
