We recently rented a car and the first thing I told my wife was “Make sure it’s not Hertz!!!” This lawsuit should hopefully ruin the company and prevent others from becoming victims
Last time I rented a car from Hertz was in September 2014. The rented SUV had different number-plates installed. The one in the front did not match the one in the back. I just rented it for one day, and returned it. Because of that bizarre situation, I decided to never again rent from Hertz or from their affiliate companies.

Also, it hasn't been reported as much but other rental companies ALSO jump the gun on reporting cars stolen. Bothers me that both were almost in the same situation, but one was not arrested and the other went directly to jail. "Oh a white guy, lets clear this up first with the rental car company. Oh a black woman, send her to jail immediately!"
Heard about this scam! I hear when rental companies do this it’s because they’re irresponsible and lost track of the car and don’t know what to do? So they allow law enforcement to locate the vehicle for them due their ineptitude. I hope they get a lot of money to teach those scoundrels a lesson.
How many times does this need to happen for the police to send a memo around departments that rental car companies keep doing this? At this point, it’s on the cops too.
So, they just take the woman to jail and do no investigation to determine whether she's telling the truth? She needs to sue the police department also! 😡😡😡😡😡
This almost happened to me. Luckily I finally picked up my cell phone with a number I didn’t know. It was the last call they said they’d make before calling the police. Coincidentally I was directly across the street from where I rented it and was able to get the manager who made the mistake himself clear things up. Maybe I wasn’t lucky. A lawsuit would have been free money. 😆
I completely feel for both of them especially the lady that started hyperventilating because that would totally be me in that situation I've never been in trouble with the law so to have guns pointed at her and put in handcuffs and put in the back of a car has got to be a terrifying situation and Hertz should be ashamed of themselves!
At this point it's no longer a mistake and they've had sufficient time to remedy this. I received two letters myself threatening me with legal action if I didn't return their car immediately. When I went to Hertz (I happened to be nearby) for an explanation, the representative apologized to me and added that the Highlander had already been rented out to another customer several days before.
I'm glad she was able to comply without problem. I would be fearing my life in a situation like this, 5+ cops gun drawn at you, one little wrong movement could be the end for you.

The fact that they took her to jail if she had paperwork in the car and they could have placed the phone call could have probably cleared this up or at least kept her from being taken to jail they really need to be sued it's been going on way too long
I've heard of this happening way too often for it to be a mistake. And that is exactly why I've only ever rented from Hertz once and have refused to since I heard of this.
Hertz tried to do this to me also. It’s a shame. Years and decades ago, used to be a good company but have turned horribly bad by falsely accusing people of stealing rental cars while renting them.
Even if Hertz has the shorter line at the airport. Go to the longer line of other companies to avoid this trauma and humiliation and potential life ruining experience altogether.
Why is hertz allowed to report the car as stolen? If someone doesn't pay you rent you can't send cops to the house saying they stole the home. It is a civil issue. Rental car disputes should be classified as a civil matter. Not criminal. 2nd cops shouldn't treat citizens like this when they don't have the whole story. It is disgusting. And we wonder why so many people hate the police.
It’s heartbreaking when innocent people r wrongly accused for crimes they never did and probably would never think of doing!!!! That was embarrassing and briefly traumatic!
They moved to dismiss HER case?! SHE WENT TO JAIL! They took her to the freaking police station! The guy didn't even get put in cuffs! She got cuffed, arrested, and taken down to the station! They owe her a hell of a lot after what she went through! U-Haul did this to people too!
Sadly the reason the woman hyperventilated is because she knows exactly how police black and brown people. Note the difference in his treatment and hers and then tell me there is no problem in policing.
She was hyperventilating because of the wall to wall media coverage, not how black and brown people actually have normal dealings with the police 99.999% of the time.
They're still doing this?? I heard about this years ago, and every year this makes the news. You would have thought they'd learn their lesson by now. I hope everyone that sues gets the BIGGGEST bag they possibly can.
You think thats bad??? Wait till you read about Enterprise charging customers for EXTRA insurance that they never agreed to when the customer’s car insurance is the one paying for the rental…. They steal MILLIONS from people every year.
At this point I even know to never rent from hertz… my heart goes out to each & every person who has to deal with them saying the car is stolen after being paid for smh… they need to start shutting them down or have them pay out this is crazy
This is why you always need to have your rental paperwork immediately on you because if they decide to do something like this you can tell them this car was rented and my rental agreement is in the car on the passenger seat. They can call hertz and confirm before ever arresting anyone
It's going to be too late when one of these type of incidents, "goes bad" and someone actually gets hurt (shot), because of HERTZ's failures. My question is this: We never heard of this happening, back in the day, when everything was done on paper and thru "snail mail", and in today's day and age, everything is done quickly, thru computers, this is a lack of pride, in worker's doing their jobs, or greed by the rental car companies to file a theft claim thru insurance !!!
Actually hertz is doing this on purpose it's literally the only car rental company that stays in the news for the car being stolen at that point if I was officers I would just say show me proof that you legally have this car cause hertz is known for this
Keep your rental receipt with you at all times during the occupation of the vehicle. Also, I would take a photo of the receipt, especially the transaction code. I would have directed the authority to such documentation and reconfirmed with the rental company. If I were that woman, I would have sued Hertz and the police department because instead of investigating, they just assumed they had caught a thief red-handed.
One person was assumed guilty until proven innocent and the other was assumed innocent until proven guilty. One was placed in handcuffs, arrested and spent time in jail, the other was allowed to record the scene while they cleared his story……
If they have yet to get their act together by now, it won't happen. I filmed myself ranting about a car from Thrifty and asking the clerk if this car was clear of any police report a week ago to cover my ass.
Hertz is a terrible rental company that needs to be shut down for its fraudulent activities and for mistreating customers. I used hertz one time and regret it because the location I returned my rental to couldn't be bothered to stay open longer than noon on weekends when they scheduled me to return it on a weekend despite being 2 hours away from the airport I would be picking up my rental from. By the time I would get to the return location, they would be closed. So I was forced to spend an additional 100 dollars to hold it for the weekend before finally returning it. I've also read horrible reviews of people getting charged late fees for not picking up a rental on their scheduled pickup date, when in fact no rentals were available, people being forced to pay for insurance or the rental deal is off despite insurance not being required, and also getting charged additional charges as if they were still renting despite having already returned the vehicle
The trama they put customers thru and just shrug it off as no big deal is just amazing .. even though it gets dismissed they still have a arrest records .

The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your love ones is to NEVER do business with them. Spread the words and don’t stop until this absolutely disgusting company goes under.
Bothers me that both were almost in the same situation, but one was not arrested and the other went directly to jail. "Oh a white guy, lets clear this up first with the rental car company. Oh a black woman, send her to jail immediately!"
Exactly
different police departments
@@crusanosicus562 But Hertz dismissed her suit and went forward with his.
Different cops, different department
Well different cops for a start.
Heard about this scam! I hear when rental companies do this it’s because they’re irresponsible and lost track of the car and don’t know what to do? So they allow law enforcement to locate the vehicle for them due their ineptitude. I hope they get a lot of money to teach those scoundrels a lesson.
They called customer no answer 😂
*Dirty rotten scoundrels
How many times does this need to happen for the police to send a memo around departments that rental car companies keep doing this? At this point, it’s on the cops too.
I'm so glad someone is finally standing up to Hertz, they've been doing this to people for YEARS!
Stark comparison between the women getting arrested and the man getting arrested ... racism is still alive and well
I never knew this. Shameful. They need to close down!!
@@notmebutyou8350 yep it happened to my friend, they arrested her and it took months for it to be resolved!
@@Uzair823 Africans had their fair share of racism towards others so I somewhat agree
So, they just take the woman to jail and do no investigation to determine whether she's telling the truth? She needs to sue the police department also! 😡😡😡😡😡
Me too
This almost happened to me.
It’s not worth the ordeal
That sucks I wish it happens to me so I can get free cash too
Explain more? Who called you. And what did they say?
Definitely not worth the trauma you dodged a bullet
Wait how did they have your number but not know you rented 🤨
I hope the arrest was stricken from the women's record. Even if the charges were dropped, an arrest can show up on a background check.
I completely feel for both of them especially the lady that started hyperventilating because that would totally be me in that situation I've never been in trouble with the law so to have guns pointed at her and put in handcuffs and put in the back of a car has got to be a terrifying situation and Hertz should be ashamed of themselves!
You'd think with all these lawsuits piling up they would have gotten their act together by now.
Hertz doesn’t care
@@LivingLifeOutWest They never will
They could care less.
@@LivingLifeOutWest you gotta keep hitting their wallet with the big lawsuits then they will listen
@@rixyz7013 AGREED
At this point it's no longer a mistake and they've had sufficient time to remedy this. I received two letters myself threatening me with legal action if I didn't return their car immediately. When I went to Hertz (I happened to be nearby) for an explanation, the representative apologized to me and added that the Highlander had already been rented out to another customer several days before.
Wow, that's some high level incompetence
This has been an ongoing problem with Hertz for at least 5 years now. You'd be nuts to rent from them.
Hopefully they both sue Hertz and the police and the city.
I'm glad she was able to comply without problem. I would be fearing my life in a situation like this, 5+ cops gun drawn at you, one little wrong movement could be the end for you.
That part...being innocent and falsely accused is scary. Having guns pulled on you and you don't know what's going on is traumatic and worthy of a payday
But why should 5 cops draw a gun for one stolen vehicle? Seems insane. It's not like she kidnapped a child.
@@misshoneynevercame4832 it’s just how they to do it, since they don’t know anything. So it’s better to be safe than sorry. All they know is stolen car, no information if they’re armed or not. Or if it’s more than 1 person
Better to be safe than sorry better to come back home alive then get shot because you wanted to show a little bit of mercy I know it seems messed up but that's just how it goes
@@eaglesniper4263 it’s how they do it when they get a description of a certain type of customer
I stopped using Hertz when I go some random unauthorized charge on my credit card a FEW months after my bill was settled. As soon as I figured out there was absolutely no reason for the charge, I never, ever used them again. Imagine what they must have gotten away with for decades.
Being arrested for a stolen car that is not stolen is not a "negative experience". It's a nightmare.
This story shows the "difference". Amazing that they called to "clarify" for the man yet the woman was taken to jail.
Why didn’t the police let the woman show that she rented the car. Why did they take her straight to jail?
She's black I mean n!gger in white people's eyes.
You know the answer.
@@souluti0n I know but if I say it ima told that’s not why.
Here, I'll say it. Notice how the white man wasn't even put in handcuffs. It's a white and black issue.
Oh you know why
So with the woman, the Police took her to jail instead of calling Hertz to inquire. With the guy, they called Hertz and was able to clear things up immediately. Hmm...I wonder why the difference?
Finally! Hertz has been doing this for a while now. Didn't know Dollar was owned by them. Good to know.
they moved for a dismissal in her case. hilarious! I hope the judge doesnt even consider a dismissal and the jury awards millions. they will make customers sign arbritrations soon
Thrifty too.
They have at least 2 subsidiaries, Thrifty and Dollar. I wouldn't rent a bicycle from either of them, especially if they're still pulling this nonsense on their customers.
@editk7019 hi. DOLLAR,THRIFTY we’re SEPERATE companies, but HERTZ BOUGHT THEM SOME YEARS NOW, Ihad used DOLLAR for some 30 years,USA&CANADA, ,I used to have a HERTZ CARD for years too, I was last in FLA IN 2013, but they send me email all the time, just delete,🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
"Negative experiences" is a one light way to put this. Things could've gone horribly bad.
The fact that they took her to jail if she had paperwork in the car and they could have placed the phone call could have probably cleared this up or at least kept her from being taken to jail they really need to be sued it's been going on way too long
@GONNA YAT YA ALL ♥ why's that funny?
N da otha man didnt 🧐
They better win. I’ve seen so many reports about this it’s insane
Apparently they already dismissed the woman’s case.
@@aveganeverywhere Translation: Hertz wants to sweep this under their welcome mat.
The terror in her voice breaks my heart 💔
And the police took her to jail instead of making a phone call. Good job officers.
They moved to dismiss HER case?! SHE WENT TO JAIL! They took her to the freaking police station! The guy didn't even get put in cuffs! She got cuffed, arrested, and taken down to the station! They owe her a hell of a lot after what she went through! U-Haul did this to people too!
Whats the biggest difference in the both cases. They believed the White male, and id not believed the Black woman.
Whoever reported shud have jail time too
IT HAPPENED AGAIN WITH A 18 YEAR OLD BOY. SHUT HERTZ DOWN
I was in car accident and they tried to give me a hertz rental till my car was fixed I totally refused made them give me enterprise
W
Sadly the reason the woman hyperventilated is because she knows exactly how police black and brown people. Note the difference in his treatment and hers and then tell me there is no problem in policing.
She was hyperventilating because of the wall to wall media coverage, not how black and brown people actually have normal dealings with the police 99.999% of the time.
🥱
About damn time this is reported! It's been going on for several years.
This is what I call "malignant mismanagement".
The USA justice system never fails to treat black folks differently even in very similar situations 🤔
Different jurisdiction.
It makes me so sad
I'm never renting from Hertz, because renting from them hurts. They shed be out of business already. Quick, someone get the word out.
Sooooo... she was arrested but he wasn't?? And they even let him pull his phone out to record.. wow. Perfect example of how cops discriminate. So sad.
A year ago, there was already dozens of cases where Hertz (or _Hurts_ ) has done this.
Hertz should be accountable and compensate her via legal channels.
cops telling people to calm down is ironic.
Hertz has been doing this for years. There's currently a class action lawsuit against them
All police departments should now require more proof from hertz.
This is why you always need to have your rental paperwork immediately on you because if they decide to do something like this you can tell them this car was rented and my rental agreement is in the car on the passenger seat. They can call hertz and confirm before ever arresting anyone
Is Hertz running some kind of insurance scam?? This has happened to so many innocent renters. Incoming class action lawsuit ⚖️
Interesting how they arrested the woman but not the guy. I can only speculate as to why that is.
Hertz keep doing this because there is no consequence for this kind of behavior …
You would think a rental agreement would hold some weight.
Bottom line...NEVER RENT FROM HERTZ!!!!!!
Imagine having an undercover boss rent from Hertz to see if he would get pulled over 😏
With American cops. This can cost lives.
It's going to be too late when one of these type of incidents, "goes bad" and someone actually gets hurt (shot), because of HERTZ's failures. My question is this:
We never heard of this happening, back in the day, when everything was done on paper and thru "snail mail", and in today's day and age, everything is done quickly, thru computers, this is a lack of pride, in worker's doing their jobs, or greed by the rental car companies to file a theft claim thru insurance !!!
thats not on hertz thats the US policing. i was there a few months ago. its worse than russia. fascist government at its finest.
Actually hertz is doing this on purpose it's literally the only car rental company that stays in the news for the car being stolen at that point if I was officers I would just say show me proof that you legally have this car cause hertz is known for this
@@terynb4407 no sir hertz is not the only guilty party in the rental industry.
@@pearlrival3124 yea , this happened with enterprise last year I believe
Interesting. I would like to hear a statement from the branch supervisor on how this happened
they do it on purpose. its been happening for 6+ years now
Keep your rental receipt with you at all times during the occupation of the vehicle.
💥💥 ABOUT TIME !!!!!
The trama they put customers thru and just shrug it off as no big deal is just amazing .. even though it gets dismissed they still have a arrest records .
This is absolutely true I worked there heard it happening often sadly I hate this happen I hope they get justice
Wow is this still happening i hope they get sued big time. This could be life or death I some situations. Hertz needs to really get it together.
Hertz, the place that makes sure it hurts.
They need a class action lawsuit!
Yeah, a FEDERAL class action lawsuit.
