This is unsettling, my insurance company uses Hertz when vehicles are in for repairs. I wonder if there’s a way to check off you could possibly be impacted, this seems to come out of no where.
As Doug said, use a different insurance company. Otherwise, you can sue them if anything like this happens to you because by now, everyone has been made aware of the scumminess of Hertz and if your company continues using them, they're held liable for any mishaps that may arise.
The issue is also when police can't put two and two together, even after seeing a rental agreement and doing a basic background check of the person. Somethings got to add up...
Wow. All the other stories they cops just arrest the renters and make no effort to call Hertz. But they take the time to clear the ex cop and let him walk away. Too bad all citizens aren't treated with such respect.
Enterprise is the hidden big problem in auto rental industry. They hire recent college graduates as their business model, mostly college athletes, which are often super aggressive and lack basic common sense and good communication skills. I was given a car with pre-existing damages, and when I tried to take pictures of damages for my records, the staff blocked me. I later learned I was overcharged and when I raised the issue, they got nasty with me. Location manager, also from the college hiring practice, was equally problematic.
I suppose if you must rent from Hertz, immediately go to the nearest police station in your rental, with your Hertz receipts/documents, and ask the police if its stolen. If it turns up stolen, you at least have your paperwork proving you rented the car from Hertz. IMO, Whomever at Hertz rented out a stolen car to you should be the one getting arrested, not the customer.
It’s not necessary the stolen car claim part it’s the part where you are arrested and in handcuffs, I don’t know why they can just say the the offer alright here is the paper work and the thing that says I’m renting this car, it’s not right to just go up and arrest them
Ex-cop knows the worse thing you can do is NOT commit the crime but be disrespectful & have a lack of subservience to the arresting officer. That’s why as an innocent person he felt he needed to apologize or that bruised ego was gonna handle him.

I rented a car from Hertz a few years ago as a result of a car accident, it was paid for by the insurance company. When I returned the car, I asked for a receipt showing the car was returned but the staff, new at the job, didn't know how to generate a proper receipt for an insurance contract rental. I pushed for a receipt because it would be my only mean of proof should something happen to the car, but the staff got frustrated and called the police on me... for asking for a receipt!
"Takes these matters seriously" has been said so often that it carries ZERO meaning today. Anyone who says that might as well say that they doesn't care.
I remember one of the accused customers is still locked up, can we get him out as well! He’s lost everything, anyone falsely accused still in jail, get them out!
There are quite a few Hertz employees who need to serve years in jail for these "mix ups". The only way companies will take accountability to make sure these kinds of things don't continue to happen is if someone goes to jail for not doing their job correctly.

Yeah, having your customers arrested for theft really isn't a good business model. The CEO needs to get on this ASAP.
This is unsettling, my insurance company uses Hertz when vehicles are in for repairs. I wonder if there’s a way to check off you could possibly be impacted, this seems to come out of no where.
use a different insurance company
As Doug said, use a different insurance company. Otherwise, you can sue them if anything like this happens to you because by now, everyone has been made aware of the scumminess of Hertz and if your company continues using them, they're held liable for any mishaps that may arise.
That officer needs to be charged and arrested for that threat, I've spent several nights in OKC county over some BS and it's no joke ppl die in there.
Why anyone would even consider renting a car from these thieves I have no clue.
Hertz is a terrible company - no wonder it went bankrupt.
The general public must now "HERTZ" them.
Police need to be held accountable for doing Hertz's dirty work without first doing some basic investigation.
The CEO and the entire executive board should be arrested and charged with filing false police reports.
The issue is also when police can't put two and two together, even after seeing a rental agreement and doing a basic background check of the person. Somethings got to add up...
Happened to me twice, never rented from them again afterwards. I’m now on the class action lawsuit with receipts. Wish us luck!
I rented a car from Hertz 2 years ago. Now Im worried
This has been going on for a while. why are people even using Hertz? I wouldn't do business with them.
0:41 “Senator’s are turning up the heat on Hertz.” Hope the wronged customers all band together for a major class-action lawsuit.
Republicans took that right away.
NEVER rent from Hertz
Wow.
All the other stories they cops just arrest the renters and make no effort to call Hertz.
But they take the time to clear the ex cop and let him walk away.
Too bad all citizens aren't treated with such respect.
I've had issues with Enterprise... these rental car companies are like highway bandits! And they do not maintain the vehicles like they used to
Enterprise is the hidden big problem in auto rental industry.
Hertz will hurt you
Excellent! So true!
*I would never rent a car from this company, there are so many other rental car companies out there.*
I'm glad to see Congress actually doing something for the people and correcting the wrong being done ruining people's lives
That's why their called 'HURTS' !
Hertz also reporting stolen cars to the police if you are 1 day late on payments.
I’m so glad the government is getting involved. This is just not right.
They are in bankruptcy court right now . I’m sure this issue is one of the reasons why.
It’s not necessary the stolen car claim part it’s the part where you are arrested and in handcuffs, I don’t know why they can just say the the offer alright here is the paper work and the thing that says I’m renting this car, it’s not right to just go up and arrest them
Never renting from Hertz or it's subsidiaries.
Shame on Hertz!!! The company has trackers on their cars! How dare Hertz put peoples lives in danger and have to fight legal battles! smh!
I WILL NEVER RENT A vehicle From Hertz ever or from it any other rental car companies that they own.......................
This like the 5th case I heard about when it comes to Hertz
Next it will be leinholders calling police when car loans aren’t paid. Same principle here this is a civil matter and not theft!!
Sue Hertz with a class-action lawsuit. That's ridiculous.
Ex-cop knows the worse thing you can do is NOT commit the crime but be disrespectful & have a lack of subservience to the arresting officer. That’s why as an innocent person he felt he needed to apologize or that bruised ego was gonna handle him.
I travel weekly for work and stopped renting from Hertz due to these stories I will never rent from them again
So why people still renting from Hertz!? It went bankrupt once, let it bankrupt again!
Police can recover rental cars but not actual stolen vehicles?
This just shows Americans way of thinking, “I don’t care unless it effects me.” The dude was a manger and knew it was going on but only said something when it effected him.
They should all sue Hertz.
It's about darn time I've following this story for a few years now maybe this means it's a few steps away from a class action suit
Public Official #1: "I was inconvenienced by a misunderstanding."
Public Official #2: "I was also inconvenienced by the first guy's inconvenience."
Congress: "This Must Stop Now! Pay these poor people for the inconvenience this misunderstanding cost them!"
This has been going on for years.. Instead of Hertz fixing the problem so it doesn't happen to anyone else and compensating and apologizing they are working to protect their assets and avoid the payments they will be shelling out with the class action lawsuit. The CEO and former CEO should have some criminal charges over their heads.
This is due to the incompetence of the police… the lack of due diligences on the part of the police and the court system. The attitude of the cops is outrageous and that cop threatening the man needs to be fired. All cops involved across the country need to be fired.
when you file a police report, you must update the status of the police report so that the police know the case is closed
Y'all know they r filling insurance claims on those cars....
So all I can say is EXTREME SCAMMING
#SHAMEONYOUHERTZ
I rented a car from Hertz a few years ago as a result of a car accident, it was paid for by the insurance company. When I returned the car, I asked for a receipt showing the car was returned but the staff, new at the job, didn't know how to generate a proper receipt for an insurance contract rental. I pushed for a receipt because it would be my only mean of proof should something happen to the car, but the staff got frustrated and called the police on me... for asking for a receipt!
Don't ever rent from Hertz. Period
There needs to be a class action lawsuit against Hertz.
Hertz’s new slogan: “Rent from us, and go to jail!”
"Takes these matters seriously" has been said so often that it carries ZERO meaning today. Anyone who says that might as well say that they doesn't care.
Hertz: Lets Go!!! ----> to jail
Imagine that cop when he was told that the car wasn’t stolen FML 🤦♂️
Hertz isn't the only rental agency guilty of this.
A cop threatening to send someone to the worst prison. How pathetic.
Put Hertz out of business!!
I remember one of the accused customers is still locked up, can we get him out as well! He’s lost everything, anyone falsely accused still in jail, get them out!
Great policy, no need to pay the repro man, cops do it for free…..
The people suing need to group together and file a class action suit.
Absolutely Shame Shame Shame on Hertz!
Well I'm glad Hertz doesn't exist in my town, and if they did, I definitely wouldn't rent from them.
There are quite a few Hertz employees who need to serve years in jail for these "mix ups". The only way companies will take accountability to make sure these kinds of things don't continue to happen is if someone goes to jail for not doing their job correctly.
Enterprise: "We'll pick you up!"
Hertz: "We'll lock you up!"
okay, thanks for the story. that's some mighty big eff up. can't imagine the trauma hertz has put people through. who updates the stolen car database? did hertz just forget to report recovery of stolen vehicles? is this just a bridge too far for the cops and/or for hertz?
Again, where is the customers rental contract? That should clearly show there is a mistake. Even if the officer doesn't accept that, what about the judge during the arraignment?
Getting their own customers arrested. Nice. Glad the senators and news media took notice. #neverhertzagain.
Bad business Hertz.....don't it!?
I don't even rent from hertz and have known about this for years already. This keeps happening because people don't believe it can happen to them so they continue to deal with the company. Ain't nobody stealing that many cars.
Boycott Hertz
Hit em in their pockets. Stop renting from that company. That will wake Hertz up.
Boycott Hertz people! You're supplying them with business and they treat you like crap! They don't appreciate your business. 🤔
