Ok the models are the E, F and G but then what are the "series something" and the "M something" and "X something"?

its the model of the car. each series is different than the other. the x series are bmw's suvs. M Power is how you know the engine is powerful and the car has a lot of performance, meaning the car can handle hugh speeds for that specific series of the car

I wondered why BMW had long names like the 1993 BMW 318IS coupe.

3 = 3 series (model)
18 = 1.8L engine (trim)
i = fuel injection (not diesel)
s = sport (trim)
coupe = 2 doors (but I’m assuming you knew that)
note: the last two digits of the name may not be the exact displacement, but rather an idea of how big the engine is in comparison to the other trims (ex. 318i has a smaller engine than the 325i)

Yep that’s the F3x generation. The saloon is called the F30, the Touring version is the F31 and the Grand Turismo is the F34.

This code-naming System was first publicly established in 1968.
I believe the Isetta was released in 1953, so it doesn’t have one of these code names.
Back then, there were far fewer models which made it easier to keep track. Also, rumours of upcoming models were harder to spread, as there wasn’t modern social media, arguably reducing the need of a Codename.
Perhaps BMW did have a Codename for it that was only used internally - a likely scenario.

If you know the model and the year you can search it up on the internet. Otherwise recognising the code name of a bmw on the road is exactly the same as recognising any other car model: you just get to know them after a while, especially the more iconic ones

If you search up the model and year of your car on the internet it should come up as some of the first results. I don’t think they include the Codename in the owners manual however

In 2006, BMW were making 2 models of the series: the E46 and E9X
If your car looks like this it means you have an E46:

Yes you have an E60 model. The M5 has the same codename as there are many variants of the 5 series e.g 520d, 530i etc
E60 is for all 5 series saloon variants from 2003-2010

The numbers are not in order of development,
The E65 for example came out before the E60 and the E63.
The E83 E85 and E90 all came out many years before the E70 and E71 and E84
There is no logic at all, they just used any available numbers, especially the later models, the completely lost any logic and reasoning in the naming. For Example the G30 series M3 and M4 models got their own designations of F80 and F82. Complete nonsense
