BMW’s Badging and Model Lineup Explained! (What Do All The Numbers Mean?)

  • In today’s video, we’re explaining, in depth, BMW’s badging and model lineup organization! We’ll explain what all the numbers and letters on the back of a BMW mean, and how they represent the cars’ series and engine. This topic has been the source of many questions, both in our comments sections, and from clients in person, so hopefully this video will provide some clarity. For the best understanding of the topic, we of course recommend watching the whole video, but here is a brief summary that might help as a quick reference!
    For the 228i xDrive Gran Coupé: the first “2” represents the series that the car belongs to. The “28” designates the engine size/output (2.0L 4-cyl, 228hp). The “i” represents gasoline direct injection. xDrive = all-wheel drive. Gran Coupé indicates that the car has 4 doors and a sloping roof line.
    This “key” works for all non-SUV models, non-m and non EV models. The first number is the series, the next two indicate the engine, the “i” indicates gas power, and xDrive means all wheel drive. For SUV models, the model (equivalent to series) is designated by the number following the X (X3, X7). The engine designation comes after the word xDrive (or sDrive for RWD models). For example, X3 xDrive30i: “X3” is the model, “xDrive 30i” indicates all-wheel drive with a 2.0L 4-cyl engine w/ 248hp.
    Importantly, all even-numbered series (2,4,6) are offered in different body styles (Coupé, Gran Coupé, and Convertible), whereas odd-numbered series (3,5,7) are one body style only (sedan). For SUVs, the even numbers (X4, X6) are the slope-back roof versions of the traditionally shaped SUVs that are named using the odd numbers that directly precedes it. For example, the X4 is the slope back roof version of the X3. The same applies to X5 and X6.
    M Models come in two tiers: M Performance and M. M Performance cars are represented by the letter M followed by two or three numbers (M340i, X6 M60i). M cars are the highest performing cars that BMW makes, and these are badged with an M followed by only one number (M3, M8). In the case of SUVs, the M is followed by nothing (X4M, X5M).
    Electric cars are badged with an “i” followed by the series (i7, i4, i5). They follow the exact same naming convention as the SUVs, just replace the “X” with an “i”.
    Engine designations key is below:
    28i = 2.0L I4 turbo (228-241 horsepower)
    30i = 2.0L I4 turbo (248 - 255 horsepower)
    M35i = 2.0L I4 turbo (302-313 horsepower)
    40i = 3.0L I6 turbo (375 horsepower)
    M40i = 3.0L I6 turbo (382 horsepower)
    60i = 4.4L V8 twin-turbo (536 horsepower)
    M60i = 4.4L V8 twin-turbo (523 horsepower)
    M2/3/4 = 3.0L I6 twin turbo (473-503 horsepower)
    M5/6/8 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo (600-617 horsepower)

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! Also, good to hear you found the explanation concise, it's tough to consolidate all this info into a video that's still digestible!

    And, to add to the naming conventions, we have the Alpina B8 and XB7. Thank you for all the info. Lots to take in.

    also bmw will eventually change their naming since the bmw x7 got the m60 badge their slowly removing the I at the end of the badging of some of their models. the new 5 series will come with an electric drivetrain aswell and the i5 m60 will replace the m550i. don't forget they also have the competition models aswell that sit above the regular m models.

      As of now, all of the gas powered models still have the "i" after their trim designation whereas the EVs do not. E.g. i5 M60 vs. X5 M60i

      @@bmwofmorristown9038 maybe its just how its named in the U.S. because in the UK for example the bmw x5 m60i and bmw x7 m60i would be called the bmw x5 m60 or bmw x7 m60.

    Hi, you do an awesome job! Quick question can the new 2024 x5 m60i be ordered in Aventurine Red?

    • @bmwofmorristown9038
      @bmwofmorristown9038  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank so much! Aventurine is not a standard color on the X5 M60i (although Ametrin, a similar color, is). That said, you can probably order it as a BMW individual special order color.

    One thing I still want to know is: what about the design at each models? Is the design for ex. (slightly) similar on all 3 series cars? (316, 318, 320, 328… ) is there something with even/odd numbers like on the x series where you could instantly know by seeing the car that it is an 320i for ex? Or do they look the same?

    • @inoffiziell3301
      @inoffiziell3301 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In addition to that what about the product code numbers like F30, e92… it really gets confusing when you have something like this BMW F30 335i x-Drive. The product code should resemble the generation is that right? Bc there is also a e92 335i

    • @S1B58
      @S1B58 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is the same for the f series cars too it was only different for the e series cars which came before so a 325 e92 was a 2.5l 6 cylinder

    What about the M5 f90 M5 CS. Similarly for m3 m2 also bmw has f82 and others. What is the difference

    • @bmwofmorristown9038
      @bmwofmorristown9038  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      F90/F82 are chassis codes, not model names. They're internal codes that BMW and BMW enthusiasts use to specifically refer to certain models and year ranges.

  • @brienYT
    @brienYT 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So for example m5 is that not the same as a 5 series?? This is so confusing

    • @bmwofmorristown9038
      @bmwofmorristown9038  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The M5 is a version of the 5 series! The top trim of any given model line (3 series, 5 series etc.) is *usually* the M version of that model line, denoted by the letter M and one single number after it which represents the series to which it belongs. For example, the top 3 series is the M3, the top 5 series is the M5, the top 2 series is the M2 etc. There are exceptions, like the 7 series and X7, which don't have M models. And for SUVs the M comes after, e.g. X5M, X3M. Hope that helps!

    wouldn't the 1 series be the way bottom of the line up unless their not sold in the US.

      Yes but you're correct, they aren't sold in the U.S. anymore.

    In Saudi Arabia we have 735i
    I think that is 4 cylinder

    • @bmwofmorristown9038
      @bmwofmorristown9038  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This definitely varies quite a bit market to market. We don't have a 735i here in the US.

    so fricking complicated. To pick one car - need take a colledge course on what is difference between all those models numbers and letters and keep updating this info because they contantly keep changing they own pattern.
