I just used this method to smooth the horns on the Minotaur I'm working on. I spread the joint compound thinly with a knife and let it dry. I was in a hurry, so then I took it outside and used a sanding sponge to smooth it down. A lightly damp sponge works, and doesn't make a mess - but it does take a little longer.

omg, i love what you do, and i love to hear you explaining things, you do it so detailed. My daughter is a schoolteacher and i think i am going to make some masks voor her class. i am from Belgium and hope it go"s well when i want to order something.
Thank you. Your timing for this video is AWESOME! Did a search yesterday through all your videos to find a way to smooth out the texture. I make my clay a bit differently. First I've never added the flour. Secondly I start the clay with completely dried toilet paper chunks. The rest of the recipe is yours with these changes. After soaking the toilet paper I use an old T-shirt to squeeze out as much water as possible. Use a blender to chop the toilet paper into small chunks. Then let them dry completely. When mixing I can control the amount of water. Allowing me to make a stiffer, more moldable clay. The clay has to sit overnight in a sealable plastic bag. Instead of relying on a perfect armature I make a simple one as close to the shape I need. Relying on the stiffness of the clay and my hands to form the final shape. This makes a textured clay. The texture has worked in my favor. Adding an extra depth to my work. My next project needs to be as smooth as possible. Thank you for your great timing!
I must be psychic! Do you show your process anywhere? I didn't see it on your channel. I'm currently trying to learn Ukulele and not having much luck with my old fingers - do you have any suggestions for me? Not quite the same as the instrument you play, but close... :)
@@UltimatePaperMache No I don't have any pics of my stuff or process. But as far as the Ukulele goes try this. Learn to press the strings as lightly as you need to. Most beginners try to play to hard. Start by pressing down a string. Wile you pick at that string slowly lift your finger till it no longer sounds good. Then lightly press till it does. Try the next finger and see if you can remember how lightly you pressed with the first one.
But it did warp, I'm afraid. I hoped that the masking tape would slow down the warping, and I think it did - but it still isn't entirely flat. It's hard to keep cardboard (or even plywood) from warping when something wet is added on just one side. I hope to experiment some more, because for years I've wanted to create a faux Mayan wall carving. It might work if the shapes are built up with foil before adding the paper mache clay, but not if the clay is added directly to a flat background. If anyone has ideas for making it work, let us know. :)

Hi nice beautiful soul, you are so lovely and you give tons of peace to all of us. thanks for this beautiful tutorial. I’m doing a inspire Lemax Xmas village house project and I’m wondering if I can use air dry clay instead of the paper clay not sure if it is the same or not or should I just use this paper clay you make? I have air dry clay but not sure if it will stick to the cardboard ( the structure of the house I made it ok cardboard) or if the air dry clay will eventually crack. I’m so confused Once again thank you and your videos makes me happy. Hola from Spain !!!!
Hi Jasson. I'm sorry it took so long to reply. The air dry clay recipe is not as sticky as the paper mache clay, so I'd recommend using the pm clay for a thin first layer, and then use the air dry clay for the second layer and details. I hope you're having fun with it. 😀
Have you ever used acrylic gel medium for smoothing? It has little to no shrinkage and is very smooth. It comes in various weights and shine qualities. It is water based and can be painted over. I have used it to fill in little places on things that are not paper mache but am will try it on one.
I have not tried that. I think I bought some awhile back, but I can't remember what I used it for. Is it easy to get it smooth without a lot of brush marks?
@@dme3o The fastest way to get an answer is to put it in the comment area on the Daily Sculptors page on my website. You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page - Thanks for asking. 😀
Ok, this is really good. I have been making some things with the new recipe, which I like that I don’t need to add flour. Now with the new bit of information, I will apply the final coat with joint compound to smooth out. As soon as I have something finished, I will share. Thanks for your continued, enjoyable and informative videos, Jonni!
You’re a godsend to find. So cool. I’m craving to start sculpting but have so little to get started with. I will start nonetheless, and have found you amid searching for epoxy clays and then in one of your videos you just had mentioned to watch other vids dealing with your experimentation with creating outdoor sculpture.
Most of my experiments didn't work out very well, I'm afraid. The epoxy works great (my squirrel has been outside in three bitterly cold Minnesota winters, rain, snow and sun, and looks the same as the day I made him. And my smaller concrete sculptures are doing OK, but the larger figure sculpture cracked. Have you found a good material to use for outdoor sculptures that's less expensive than epoxy?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm going to use your recipe to scultlpt dreamy images on my bedroom wall. Thank you again. You're awesome.
Hi there! First wanna say, this video and your technique is phenomenal. I am going out of town for 5 days and was thinking of applying my joint compound before I go. My question is: is there a window of time to use the wet cloth after the joint compound has dried? Or can I let it dry and go for 5 days and use the wet cloth when I get back? Thanks so much!!
Interesting question - I think you can always smooth it with a damp cloth. I'm usually in a hurry to get things done, so I haven't tested it by leaving it for a long time, except when I'm fixing holes in a wall. It always seems to work. If it doesn't for any reason, you could take it outside and use some fine sandpaper, but it never gets waterproof, so the damp rag should always work.
Thank you so much for replying!! I ended up not applying the joint compound before I left, so I’m still not sure if this would be a possibility but I think after seeing how dry it gets it could work! I’ll save the experimenting for my next project ❤❤
Thank you for these tips!! I'm working on a mask (it's going to be a little heavy, which I don't mind, since it's supposed to be like metal) and I cannot stand sanding, it's a sensory issue. Thank you for these tips! 😁😁
Have you tried using the air dry clay recipe? It's the same ingredients, but less paper and a little cornstarch to make it smoother. th-cam.com/video/T9lOY1xNslw/w-d-xo.html
I'm in the process of moving, but when I get to my new home, I'd like to make a couple of things with your recipe. A large giraffe for the den and a table top statue of a horse for an entryway. Don't know if I'll be good at this, but I really want to try!

Hi I send you a message through another video Walmart no longer carries this in their stores do you use the one from Home Depot or Lowe's in the green container???
The one I've been able to find here in my town is the USG Sheetrock brand, which is available at Lowe's and Home Depot. The lid is green. If you use the DIY glue recipe, you can use any brand of joint compound. You can find that recipe here: th-cam.com/video/_JGLdN3A4wk/w-d-xo.html
When I'm doing actual work on drywall I will use a magic eraser because it's a little closer to sandpaper and I tend not to leave the same sort of scratches impressions that rags can give you I will take off a lot of the compound so I really just use it for blending edges. Anyway you might want to try magic erasers
Jonni, thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge. You truly have a gift for sculpture and teaching! At (1:40) you mention adding joint drywall compound over paper strips on the cat mask to smooth out the texture of the strips. On the Giraffe, you have the pattern + strips + paper mache clay + joint compound + gesso + acrylic paint as your layers. I understand that the paper mache clay allows for sculpting and adding details, but in your experience, what is the advantage of (strips + paper mache clay + joint compound) vs. (strips + joint compound)?
Hi Jonni, I just discovered your channel and I love it!! Your sculptures are gorgeous and I love the instruction videos. You really explain everything so well and you have such a soothing voice. I’ll be starting my paper maché project tomorrow morning for my art portfolio (I’ll be making three masks) and I’ll be glad to test out your techniques 🤩. Keep it going! 🧡
I am looking for a recipe to make vases and coasters with leaf prints. Just wondering if this recipe would be suitable for my projects. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is very much appreciated.
The smooth air dry clay recipe would work really well. The paper mache clay has to much texture to take a good copy of a leaf. Both recipes dry very hard, so you might need to put some felt on the bottom of the coasters to keep them from scratching your table. And you can't put water in a vase made with either recipe, because they aren't at all waterproof. You can find the air dry clay recipe here: th-cam.com/video/YOiovGN-yHA/w-d-xo.html

Genius! Awesome Video! This saves a whole lotta time!
Glad it helped! 😀
Thankyou for all of this! I will be using the orginal clay recipe and this to make a face mask for english. I cant wait
Youve just saved my project ❤ THANK YOU
I'm glad I could help. 😊
Your art is so awesome
Patricia
Thanks!
You are so smart! Thank you for sharing it!
у вас золотые руки!!!! смотрю и восхищаюсь. спасибо вам и дай Бог здоровья .
Just what I was looking for! You are awesome!! Thank you for this!!
Glad I could help! 😀
Ultimate Paper Mache Thanks again! I have some more questions and was wondering what would be the best way to send my questions over?
@@dme3o The fastest way to get an answer is to put it in the comment area on the Daily Sculptors page on my website. You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page - Thanks for asking. 😀
Ok, this is really good. I have been making some things with the new recipe, which I like that I don’t need to add flour. Now with the new bit of information, I will apply the final coat with joint compound to smooth out. As soon as I have something finished, I will share. Thanks for your continued, enjoyable and informative videos, Jonni!
I'd love to see what you make with it. Have fun!
Amazing, thank you for sharing this video it’s really make the difference of the texture so smooth! And again thank you🥰
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm going to use your recipe to scultlpt dreamy images on my bedroom wall. Thank you again. You're awesome.
That sounds like a fantastic project. Have fun!
Thank you so the ideas. I think this will work well on my project. I'm making a wreck it ralph building pinata.
Interesting - I hope you're having fun with it! 😀
Thanks for all this clear and helpful information. Just made a second attempt at paper mache clay. It look way better than the first attempt. ^^
I'm glad you got it to work. 🐱
Not to sure where all that game from
What a beautyful art
Thanks so much for sharing. I was able to make a 2 feet sized mermaid sculpture because of this clay recipe. Again, thank you so much Jonni 😊
I would love to see them. Do you have a photo of them online where we could see how they came out?
I will be posting some photos soon ... I hope I give justice to both (the mermaid and the paper clay) 😃😃😃
Thank you for these tips!! I'm working on a mask (it's going to be a little heavy, which I don't mind, since it's supposed to be like metal) and I cannot stand sanding, it's a sensory issue. Thank you for these tips! 😁😁
Yeah - I hate sanding, too. This is much easier. 😀
I love your tchniqueds, recikpes and videos. Thank you so much for sharing your work!!!
Hermoso trabajos
Wow, I am learning so much from you, thank you.
Happy to hear that! 😄
I so enjoyed this I am always trying to get my paper mache clay smooth for doll faces but with no luck. I certainly will try this !
Have you tried using the air dry clay recipe? It's the same ingredients, but less paper and a little cornstarch to make it smoother. th-cam.com/video/T9lOY1xNslw/w-d-xo.html
Excelentes videos saludos desde México city
Gracias! 😀
Your work is amazing!!!! You are so talented and delightful to watch. Ty so much for sharing this valuable information. 😁
You are so welcome! 😀
Superbe travail : BRAVO Jonni ! Merci beaucoup pour le partage , You are adorable 😍 !
Awesome... thanks for sharing. This will make my art adventures a whole lot easier!!
I'm in the process of moving, but when I get to my new home, I'd like to make a couple of things with your recipe. A large giraffe for the den and a table top statue of a horse for an entryway. Don't know if I'll be good at this, but I really want to try!
We never know until we try! And every time we make something new, it's a little better than the one we did the day before. Have fun!
Thank you, for all your help!!!
You're welcome. 😀
Yes, I’m starting my kids costumes and my daughter wants to be Alien Predator 😬
I love a challenge but I’m going to have to watch a lot of this lady’s videos. Nice and talented woman! I’m so glad she made a channel.
Are you making Halloween costumes already? You are a lot more organized than I am! 😄
Ultimate Paper Mache yes! I have to start early because they take a while. I’m learning from your videos how to construct the head of the alien (it will be constructed on top of a bike helmet). I am making this costume: 😬

You are the loveliest
Thank you for sharing these helpful videos
Want you to know that you have subscribers from all part of the word in my case Iran
You have such a unique and creative style of making dolls and puppets
Thanks. 😊
When I'm doing actual work on drywall I will use a magic eraser because it's a little closer to sandpaper and I tend not to leave the same sort of scratches impressions that rags can give you
I will take off a lot of the compound so I really just use it for blending edges.
Anyway you might want to try magic erasers
Thanks, Essy. I've never heard of a magic eraser before. I appreciate the tip!
Great video! Thank you. Can’t wait to try this.
😊
Jonni, thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge. You truly have a gift for sculpture and teaching! At (1:40) you mention adding joint drywall compound over paper strips on the cat mask to smooth out the texture of the strips. On the Giraffe, you have the pattern + strips + paper mache clay + joint compound + gesso + acrylic paint as your layers. I understand that the paper mache clay allows for sculpting and adding details, but in your experience, what is the advantage of (strips + paper mache clay + joint compound) vs. (strips + joint compound)?
This was so helpful! I thought maybe I did my mixture wrong when I made the clay.
I'm glad it was helpful 😄
Really love your passion for mache. I enjoy creating stuff ad well. Im off to Walmart to get Drywall compound. Thanks for the tip. Hugs
I hope you had fun making your masks! 😊
