I heard my voice in a recording yesterday and today I'm researching how to change it. I grew up with serious emotional neglect and I've never learned how to communicate effectively. I've always felt like nobody listened when I was talking and now I know it's because I wasn't using my real voice. I'm so stressed out and afraid when I speak that I sound like a child still... this video was a transformative experience for me.
I was also neglected as a child. I got the message that emotions were unimportant; hence I spoke in a monotone. I mistook appearing serious for maturity. I'm Slatina Massey on Facebook. Feel free to add me. I care.
Gina Young same here. Turned me into a very soft spoken woman. Im already petite so my voice makes me feel completely invisible sometimes. But this video opened my eyes.
Omg me toooo I sound like a kid I'm 30 and to this day I feel like noone takes me serious noone wants to hear what I have to say all because I haven't found my authentic voice

Good talk, thank you Roger. Here are my notes if it helps anyone else :)
- Find your real authentic voice, not the voice you take on from someone else.
- 3 Key insights from Roger Love
- Your voice is the most powerful communication tool that you possess
- There is no difference in voice between singing and speaking, once you realize your voice is musical instrument, it changes the game.
- All speaking is public speaking and should be treated that way, whether you are talking to one person or a group
- How To find your voice that connects with people and move them emotionally.
- Your voice is not designed for you, it is a gift that you give away
- Sound waves are interpreted by the other person by thoughts, emotions and memories.
- Your voice is to make them others feel something.
- Breath in through your nose so that the air becomes moist and not dry your throat.
- Chest up, shoulders back and down to not restrict the rib cages.
- Breath in through your nose and pretend you have a balloon in your abdomen. When you speak let your abdomen come back in.
- Myth: The words matter
- The words only account for 7% if a person believes you
- 90% of has to do with the sounds of your voice. Pitch, Pace, Tone, Melody, Volume and Body Language
- Don’t speak on the same note becasue listeners will think they know what you are going to say and they will disconnect. (Mix it up)
- When you go down on volume at times, it sounds like you are apologizing.
- Three ways to use melody
- Walking up the stairs (Lower to higher) Makes people happy
- Walking down the stairs (Higher to lower) Makes people sad, don’t use it.
- Spend less time staying on the landing (Boring)

I used to mumble and had to grow out of it through immense frustration and even then i have had to learn how to communicate and even then i had to learn how to listen and know when something is NEEDED to be said. My brother is a mumble but very loud in gaming and it gets me aggravated that he cant have the same passion when talking casually and he is be taught through gaming that they only way out is thorugh frustation but hes a slow learner so i cant blame him.

You are on the mark and money my friend. How does any person convey a lifetime of experience to an audience in a short moment of time; well Roger Love is the guy to do it. The tools that Roger implanted into and onto the audience in attendance and those watching on the screen of any form, will be transformed in such a subtle manner, that in spite of themselves, will benefit them over their lifetime. He had me at the sentence about "when I was 16, my first student was Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys". From that point on, the rest is certainly history. We are lucky to have such a master vocal technician.

This is great. For those of you who think he speaks "over the top", honestly, if he wasn't speaking about voices, you'd not pay attention to his style enough to get annoyed.

It's so true , I speak with a monotone voice, and have the deepest voice of anyone I know on top of that. I listen to my voice and it sounded like rocks freaking grinding together
There was a time when my voice was higher. And it’s because I was happier. I’ve been speaking monotonously with a low pitch for years because of depression. Now that I have recovered, I’m looking forward to a change in my voice!

This make sense, my voice is horrible, I'm constantly spoken over, ignored, or dismissed, it's happend ever since I was a young child, it's so bad that I'm practically a mute these days because I know I would be wasting my breath if I tried to speak. and it's so depressing.

This is my first time watching a video of Roger Love; as a matter of fact, this was my first time reading about him. He was recommended from a sales book and I am glad that I watched this video. This will help me with communicating my ideas and emotions effectively. I will definitely watch more of his videos.

This was a successful Ted Talk just for everyone that had the chance to pay attention and learn. i've laughed so much, even teared up a little because it gave me hope that my speech can improve and it will improve. I am bilingual and in Spanish I can't roll my Rs for example, and I NEVER speak when my ''stomach is coming back in''. Definitely will master this technique. Thank you Roger Love!!!!!!!!!

The Main thing is be not PASSIVE when you speak to others be Proactive. Take your time. Listening is part of it all as well in that how you speak could be effected by what or how they spoke! Have Fun!

Thanks to Roger Love, his teaching and his coaching, I have control over my voice that I did not have before I took his UCLA Extension class, many years ago.
I would love to take elocution lessons from Roger. In the meantime, I’m happy to have stumbled upon this video and will search for more content from him.
I literally make people yawn when I speak. I bet I can make a person who is wide awake yawn within 2-4 minutes of me talking with them. It's a gift that I possess.

Although I have no technical knowledge on this subject, it's intuitive to me that lower tones do not ALWAYS make people sad. By my perception, lower tones can evoke TRUST and can also be soothing. However, always speaking in a lower tone can be boring and indeed make people sad.
As I truly believe it's not just me to have this opinion, I would dare to say that we should make good use of our entire vocal range, instead of just focusing on mid-to-high pitch.

You're right. I think its more then just sad and happy. Both high and low voices can show trust, authority, calmness, and many unspeakable feelings if said in required situations.

@@kshitijguleria8594 Folks, it appears that living in the world of duality, it is always the same: speakers like Roger state a generalization and the listener and commenters, as in this comment, tend to never allow the obvious "wiggle room" of common sense to be present. You hear one small segment of Roger's lifetime living experience, and voila, you state your opinion as "lower tones do not ALWAYS make people sad". My question to you both reply's, what are you trying to convey to the audience right now... Here's my opinion on the subject for this TED Talk HEADING: "Is you voice ruining your life"... I watched it, and I have been taught by Roger, so here is my question to you? Are your responses to anything, "ruining your life?" Where the (your) thoughts go... so does the voice. As a thought is really a silent vocal inflection from the voice; whether you believe it or not...meaning whether you even like it or not... a thought is a silent subtle soft inaudible whisper that instantaneously involves the voice. Therefore, It is the owner or possessor of the voice, who controls the volume... on a scale of 0 - 10, and in this specific case silence is golden. Saying nothing with words, may be interesting for the moment, but becomes nothing.
He didn't say that lower tones make people sad, but that lowering the tone makes people sad. It's the direction of the change of pitch he's talking about.
What happen, the voice open the throat chakra, the chakra the communicate with the world, so as you change with practice, th e chakra open, your body feel great cause it receive and give.
