Funny, 9 years ago I wanted to learn how to play guitar. I found your channel and it helped me so much. I decided a month ago to pick up the Ukulele and learn it and here we meet again lol glad to see you are doing well and continuing to make videos. Cheers
I love ukulele, I started as a drummer at the age of 8. Then my wife brought me an acoustic guitar for Christmas when I was 33 years old because she couldn't think of anything else to get me even though I was always happy in bands playing drums in the bad. Anyway I learnt to play guitar and have a few now. Then on my 52 birthday my grown up sons brought me an good ukulele. At the time I was a band tour bus driver and on tour with Rod Stewart, so took the ukulele with me to learn to play while on tour for 9 weeks in UK and Europe. I asked one of the band members if they could show me some stuff on it which she did. This was 8 years ago now and just had my 60th birthday and take the ukulele whenever I go away. Brilliant channel by the way Justin 👍
I play guitar now, but I started on a baritone ukulele - and I loved it! I don't know if I'd have gone onto guitar, without the uke. And the baritone just doesn't get enough love.
The baritone gets a bad rap by many. "Might as well just play a guitar". As a ex guitar player the baritone is a great option when you can no longer comfortably play a guitar. Love my baritones ukuleles. I can play them so much longer than I can play a guitar.
Not sure how you can generalise about all sopranos with a Mahalo as an example. Some of the fullest sounding ukuleles I have ever played are sopranos and not hyper prices either. It's just a different sound, but not not 'lesser'. Oh, and ukes don't lose tune with friction pegs if they are set properly.
I bought the same Mahalo ukes for my twin daughters when they were 9. Good little beginner ukes :) My first uke was the Enya Nova U concert ... it’s a great starter uke.
I recommend cases for all instruments if you are in a climate that gets really dry. Then you can add an instrument humidifier and keep the instrument in a better "climate".
I have been told to get a tenor ukelel but I am going to get the soprano first. Then I will graduate upwards. I have played the piano for years and can read music, I played the ukelele when I was young but I do not remember much. I am so looking forward to learning it again.

My daughter has a plastic Disney ukulele. She got it used, and it still looks new. I spent a few bucks for strings and it sounds pretty good, and holds a tune well. (the strings it came with sounded bad and didn't stay in tune)
As a beginner I would also add a capo to the list of accessories that you would want. Cost me £5 and can really help in many instances when you're just not ready for those difficult chords
To me, the act of making music is the most fun that you can have with your clothes on. I really love music and its always the song you wanted when you play it. I am definitely going to buy one. I am curious as to do they have them with the steel strings as well??? Just seems that the sound would be better from steel strings and just too easy to play... a great teaching tool
Lol Too late Justin.😋 I'm already in for a soprano, a concert & a baritone.👍 Having played guitar for decades I am enjoying the uke journey❤❤ They are cheap to test drive & Totally concur that If you dig ukes, Spending a bit more IS worth it.
Thank goodness I found this channel. I've been searching for information about what type Ukulele would be best for me and most videos I found here on TH-cam, confused me more than they helped me in my decision making, this one here seems to do the trick :-) . I'm a total beginner, it would be my first musical instrument (that's if you count out Maracas, Radio and HiFi) and I'm in my late 50s, which limits the list of musical instrument I can realistically learn without too much frustration. So it's a Concert Ukulele I want. Now I've narrowed it down to the type and half the battle is won. Thank you :-)
This is great! Been playing guitar since 1974, and every time I go to Hawaii, I am lured into the music/ukelele shops and am so tempted to get a uke. Never felt comfortable with the differences between the styles (and the range of prices!) so always chickened out. Now I have something to base a decision on. I also appreciate the suggestion of going b budget (not to say cheap, though) to see if it's for me. I realized that my first guitar was probably around $100 from a used instrument store, and now I have 6 of them in a whole range of prices. Thanks for the tips. Mahalo! ;-)
Great information, thank you! I am signed up for lessons but still looking for my first uke to purchase. I had already decided on the concert as I like the size and the richer sound. Trying to learn as much as possible about this charming instrument.
This is so great!! Thank you. My niece had one that she just beat around on much like you’ve described your daughter. And I looked up the tuning, tuned it up. Looked up a couple chords.. and boy oh boy is it fun
I have an Enya X1 tenor ukulele. It is OK and does the job. It doesn't go out of tune too much, and the sound is decent, but I have to say the volume is a bit muted and the sound is not very bright. I've been playing for about a year and a half now, and have come across quite a few ukes that sound better for not much more $$$ at all. If you're in the market for a new uke, Enya is not bad, but you should note that Enya ukuleles are on a MASSIVE marketing campaign all over the internet and pay so many ukulele TH-camrs to promote their products. So, take what people say about Enya ukes with a pinch of salt.
Impressed you gave a Maton, I’d love one, very pricey, I have a Maton guitar so I know the quality, not that I can play it with the respect it deserves. Fun fact, Tommy Emmanule has

I much prefer the sound of the guitar but have had a hard time getting used to it chord shapes etc. I've actually been looking for a baritone uke that sounds like a guitar...much easier to play!
Wow😳 Yesterday I bought a little uke at a Cashies store. Wasn't looking to buy one, but just saw it and thought it was super cute. Guess what. It is the exact same Mahalo you have there 😃. Mine is a lovely dark blue colour and it is in mint condition. I watched one of your videos last night to learn how to tune it and my first 4 cords. It sounds awesome. I paid $29AUD for it, which I think is about £15, it is in brand new condition, with the carry bag, so reckon I got a fabulous deal, yah 👍👏👏 So glad I found you too Justin. BTW, have ordered your book of 25 ukulele songs from an online book store. Can't wait to get it. Subbed to your channel too. Love your style, you're such a lovely guy too, and awesome teacher. Thanks so much Justin 🙏💕
What about a video showing skills we can transfer from uke to guitar and vice versa? I started watching your videos to play the ukulele, now i am also learning the guitar.
Your site came recommended to me from a friend who, curiously, happens to play guitar as their “main” instrument. Me? I’ve never been especially enamored of the guitar; particularly electric guitar (I know… how weird is THAT!?) So… while I appreciate your thoughts regarding the ukulele, I have to wonder, would someone who’s drawn to the uke - MORE than the guitar - offer different opinions? Just wonderin’…
The baritone uke seems better suited to strumming than a nylon-string guitar to me; less 'boomy' with just 4 strings. Do you play nylon or steel string acoustic when strumming?
Check out the Aklot concert uke. Solid mahogany and possibly the best bang for buck uke out there! I’ve recently bought that and a Kmise soprano one for my 4 year old which is a quality beginner uke and cost £25 with accessories.
This was entertaining and informative - just a shame I didn't see this before I bought my first Uke , a Noah ' Super Concert' , which is a concert size body with a tenor neck. Not hugely expensive but not budget either though very good value i.m.o as they are handmade by a family of luthiers in Vietnam that a guy called Matt here in the UK got to know and went into collaboration with. Think mine was around £270. All solid mahogany and bears the serial number No. 6 ! It's a nice Uke but had I seen this before I might have gone for something a bit cheaper as I mainly play guitar ( yes, I do subscribe to your teaching forum and recommend you to others!). Didn't know you played Uke as well but should have guessed you do. They are good fun! That Maton you have is great which is no surprise because they make really good guitars as I'm sure you are aware.. Regards Roy Cuckow

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for your amazing work! May I ask what uke would you recommend on a budget around €200? I want to buy one for my 8yo son and I’m interested in the best sounding one, with the best quality of craftsmanship and wood. Thank you so much!
Hi! Can you recommend a uke around $150-200 that doesn’t have a blunt edge? I am a beginner with a concert sized uke, and the uke I have is literally digging into my right forearm while strumming causing painful marks/bruises. I’ve experimented with various positioning, but I’ve concluded that it’s not the positioning that’s my problem, but the instrument’s design and the blunt edge where the side meets the top - no matter how I position, my forearm hits a corner one way or another. I am thinking that something with a more rounded edge would resolve the issue. Can you recommend some options? I’d really like a concert size, preferably an acoustic-electric. Thanks in advance!
I think you'll find uke's with "contour edges" and arm rest in a slightly higher price range >$250 like the Ortga's etc. | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide
I like Ukeleles, please don't get me wrong, I'm happy for anyone with £850.00 who can afford to buy a Uke with that money. I see them, however, as a bit of fun - and as something that you wouldn't cry over if someone accidentally sat on it. It's still a Uke. In my narrow-minded, limited view, cash strapped universe, it'd be ridiculous to spend that kind of money on a Uke.
I just got the Mahalo from a Cashies store for $29AUD yesterday. It looks brand new. Watched Justin video to tune and learnt first 4 cords. It sounds awesome and is an absolute joy to play.
