      Greetings to Crewe!
      I was in your plant a few times over the last years and it was amazing everything.
      Greetings from an engineer of a certain middle/ northern German car manufacturer that you as a Bentley employee definitely know but not necessarily love since the acquisition.
      I wish I would work around your guys cars more often!
      The last thing I did with Bentley was configuring and planing the commissioning in the production for the ECUs and it was fun doing all those special functions you usually don’t have in the „regular“ cars.
      Oh and it’s lovely how much time you have in your production line, so not such a headache to optimize the time the ECUs need until their fully programmed and working haha.
      Talking about multiple seconds more time instead of fighting for tenths and hundreds of seconds is a really relaxing thing!

    Jeremy Clarkson and the Brooklands opened my eyes to this brand and I've been a fan ever since. Thank you for sharing their history and for doing it in a great new model. That being said, the snob within me objects to their attempt at keeping with the times by fitting carbon fiber bits on and into a 4 door Bentley.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, this 'brand' is no more. It was bought by Volkswagen and destroyed. It was destroyed immediately back when VW bought it. Volkswagen just takes other Volkswagens and puts on a "New-Beetle'd" vaguely Bentley-like shape on it, with those typical ridiculous blobby round headlights VW puts on anything 'retro' they do.
      Bentley is not actually designed or made by anything British, it's totally controlled by VW's Germans and integrated into the overall VW system, using platform sharing and maximum utilization of purely VW parts.
      "Volks-Bentleys" on front-wheel-drive-based VW platforms, with VW engines, VW everything are not Bentleys in the slightest.

    • @nagylevi3827
      @nagylevi3827 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pistonburner6448 that is perhaps true. But I see it differently. I see the spirit of the brand alive through the great design, the elegance, the performance and the sumptuous luxury while VW provides the engineering and the relative reliability that make it an actually feasible choice for even the most rational of buyers.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nagylevi3827 Design dictated by the underpinning VW front-wheel-drive-based platforms or often whole complete Volkswagen cars which are only rebadged, designed by ze Germans of Volkswagen, based on orders by ze German bosses of Volkswagen. (Note, I have nothing against Germans, this is directed at VW and also their lie of Bentley having anything at all to do with the UK anymore)
      The performance? It's understeer. It's front-heavy horribleness, as the car is doomed from the very start because of the VW platform which places the engine in front of the front axle etc. Not to mention all the steering parts, chassis, suspension is all Volkswagen stuff so of course it's some of the worst in the car world.
      Putting in a big VW engine with lots of turbo boost giving it an ok 0-100km/h time does not mean "performance" nor anything Bentley.
      There is absolutely no elegance in mass-produced, calculated, made-to-order-for-the-marketing-team Volkswagen stuff. Literally even the design is just Volkswagen "New Beetle'ing" it.
      Even the way Bentley has marketed itself in motorsport after VW bought it is simply rotten! They made that travesty of a GT3 car in which they changed literally everything about it to be the opposite technically and conceptually to what the road car was, and then had the gall to market their road cars with it! That massive rule-bending monstrosity was a huge joke on the circuits but underneath the joke was even worse. By changing literally everything including the engine block, engine concept, drivetrain, driver position, body, absolutely every bit of the car and then still pretending it has anything to do with their way of making cars was pathetic. VW didn't realise the irony of having to do the exactly the OPPOSITE of what the cars they really sell in order to perform well!
      VW provides reliability??? Now you're just taking the piss... Also note that VW does not excel in any area of engineering, it literally only focuses on minimising cost by having joint platforms and parts sharing plus using marketing and corruption to increase their production volumes for the sake of profitability.
      I really mean it: VW is not great at any aspect of engineering automobiles, none. They have bought in some tech, and most of their stuff comes from suppliers. Even that they usually manage to ruin and water down in their pursuit of ruthless profitability and making everything tasteless, bland stuff. I mean in a way that's a given as anything starting off with their front-heavy platforms is impossible to save or get to be any good, but even the details they manage to make worse and more bland than they should be.
      Every aspect: they only care about their own formulas, low cost of production and above all marketing. They consistently make the most un-ergonomic user interfaces for the driver. So what if they buy in the most expensive thin veneers (from the same suppliers as to their other cars) to place on top of that same Volkswagen stuff? And then pretend to "manufacture" it in Britain when in fact most of the car is made in Germany or Eastern Europe, and there is very little simple assembly done in Britain. For much of their history they've straight up made the whole cars in Germany...no wonder since for most of their history the car has been exactly the same Volkswagen with just a handful parts and badges switched.
      Why bother, when there are so many other far more authentic brands, with an ounce of backbone and principle? And whose company is not owned by evil, corrupt elitists who really hate people like you, absolutely despise you and only want to pump you dry of your money so they can live their hedonistic ultra-luxury lifestyles and bribe our politicians to go against our interests, hurt us just so VW can make more money. That in addition to their straight-up crimes which have killed scores of people, and that's only the ones they've been caught for! (Sure, most other car companies have been found guilty of lesser crimes such as corruption in 3rd world countries, but there is a difference to what VW has done and their style of doing things overall.)
      Bentleys are for people who have absolutely no clue about cars, don't care about driving, have absolutely no style, and who gullibly believe all that baloney VW puts in their marketing. Bentley is a Volkswagen marketing product, everything about it is just purely calculated marketing and produced as cheaply as possible with ZERO thought given to authenticity.

    I used to cut the highways grass outside of the sales house leading to the housing estate to the rear, they stopped the council from tarmacking the road as they used the old concrete slabs in need of repair to demo the suspension on test drives, so were happy to wreck others' cars for a 30 second segment in a sales pitch, and recently have somehow purchased the entire road and put a guard house and gate on it. so now a key road through Crewe is blocked and has caused chaos throughout other routes in the town. I love the cars but god they've got their hand in councillors' pockets in Cheshire East

    Have always loved Bentley. There is a funny story from WW1. WO made aircraft engines, as you say. One day they were bench testing new ones, and one showed 10% more power. They could not work out why. They stripped it down and still could not work out why. So, they started swapping parts. When they swapped the inlet manifold, it was back down to normal power. So, they tried the manifold on another engine. Hey Presto - 10% more power on that engine now! They inspected the manifold and found it was a poor casting that was porous. So, they drilled a small hole in all the manifolds!

    Lovely cars but it appears you would need to be mega rich or have rocks in your head to have a newer one out of warranty

    On the matter of old fashioned coachbuilding ... another London firm, one Mulliner Park Ward, was a favourite place for Bentley owners to visit to have their choice of coachbuilding attached to the chassis. So frequently did early coachbuilt Bentleys take to the road with Mulliner Park Ward coachbuilding, that this is commemorated in the name of the Bentley options catalogue - which is known simply as "The Mulliner" by those who can afford to help themselves to its options.
    If you are ever able to obtain a print copy of the Mulliner options catalogue, it is *colossal* ... you could use it as a projectile for a mediaeval siege catapult. The options list contained therein is *vast* . If you thought the online configurator was good, wait until you take a peek at that catalogue, and the frankly astonishing array of goodies listed therein.
    If you can afford to indulge, the Mulliner catalogue will allow you to add, should you so desire, options adding an extra £200,000 to the base price of your car. Yes, that's right, TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS IN OPTIONS. Of course, you need to possess a truly rococo level of decadence in your character to go that far, but if you're lining yourself up to be a modern day version of, say, King Farouk of Egypt or Aristotle Onassis, this is probably one of the better ways to go in pursuit of that aim.
    Though I still think to this day that "Bentayga" was a stupid choice of name for their SUV - Rolls-Royce definitely outsmarted them with the Cullinan - you can load that up with enough fruit to have your car called Del Monte. If you're in the same league as, say, the Sultan of Brunei, you can spec your Bentayga to the point where it becomes a de facto mobile Louisiana brothel. If memory serves, this is exactly what he did with his first one. :)

    I think this is an excellent addition to the video series and would like to see more of the same with other top marques.

    This content will raise you to the next level and should be a new series James. Longer ‘full feature’ epics. More marque, less individual product. We love the fact that your content has more depth and flavour than all the others. Ed
