    This is a review of the Lenovo USB Type-C Gen2 Docking Station. This is a "universal" Type-C docking station that provides power via USB Type-c. It has 3x USB3.1, 2x USB2.0, 2x Display Port, 1x HDMI Port, 1x Combo Audio Jack, and 1x Gigabit Ethernet port. amzn.to/3lRrZkv
    It supports Monitors: 1 x 4K @ 60 Hz, or 2 x 4K @ 30 Hz, or 3 @ 1080p.
    I tried to use a USB 3.1 A to C cable, to connect it to older PCs without Type-C, but the dock would not work.
    I did a review of the new ThinkPad E15 that I used with this dock here: • Lenovo ThinkPad E15 La...

    This video just saved the day, very literally, for my BF's new job as he does very important training program from home. He was in full meltdown that his docking station, which IT just swapped out, wasn't working which meant he would miss instruction time with his class. Within the first minute of this video you helped us identify the problem. C cord was plugged into the front slot. Moved it to back...works! Thank you!!

      So glad I could help!
      I can't count how many clients of mine have also done that. I drove to the 1st one's office and figured that out instantly. The cute picture of the laptop on the back Type-C port is clearly not enough to guide users!

    Hey dude, great video. Just one question, I'm in the market for a dock like this but I'm worried that it'll ruin my laptop battery having power plugged into it all day everday. Is it fine to have it plugged in all the time? For reference, I have the surface laptop 3.

    • @ZipTieNinja
      @ZipTieNinja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will likely degrade the battery faster, but most newer PCs are smarter about charging than previous generations. I don't have experience with the surface laptop 3, but since the batteries in all of the surface products I've used aren't replaceable, I'd be careful with it...

    • @ZipTieNinja

      It should, but may require more power than the standard USB dock can offer. You'd be better off with the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2: amzn.to/2VtSl0h
      They make a few versions depending on the wattage you need, so please confirm that 1st!

      @ZipTieNinja  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IdeaPads do not support Lenovo Docks. You can use a generic dock like a Targus, but that will be driven by your USB Bus, so it is less than ideal.
      You might be able to use a USB Type-C to HDMI Cable like this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073H9RG9T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      I don't know for sure if your Type-C connector will support display functionality or not, but it's worth a try!

    Great video! I'm really not technical at all so sorry if this is a silly question - I'm trying to connect my MacBook to the dock to get a video to play on an LG monitor. I've got the power adapter connected for the docking station, the HDMI connected to the monitor and docking station and then the USBC for my MacBook connected to the back of the station. Does there need to be a USBC cable connecting to the front too? (Is one for charging and one for display output?)

    Hello, thanks for all the info! I currently have a dock which supports 4K@60 Hz for my dell monitor. However, it has an annoying limitation which is that it either supports 4-Lane mode or 2-Lane mode. In 4-Lane mode, it supports 4k@60hz but with USB 2.0 speed only. In 2-Lane mode, USB 3 speed works, but the resolution is limited to 4k@30hz only. Which means that I either get 4k@60Hz or full speed USB 3.1 speed. Not both at the same time.
    My question is: Does this Lenovo dock have this limitation? or I can get full USB 3 speed along with 4k@60Hz.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @ZipTieNinja

    I've been using this docking station in combination with my X380 Yoga for some time now. Due to the new work from home policy I moved my equipment from the office to my home environment and for some reason my laptop doesn't charge anymore. Everything else works (docking lights up, external monitor is turned on and showing, headset is working, etc). Just the laptop is not charging and I can't figure out why. Any ideas maybe?

    • @ZipTieNinja
      @ZipTieNinja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see it does support charging through the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C / Intel Thunderbolt 3 interface, so it should certainly work. Maybe you are powering the dock with the wrong power supply? I know the dock takes the yellow "slim" type connector, could you be using a different AC to DC adapter that doesn't have the correct wattage / amperage?

    So the USB-C connection to the dock is enough to keep the laptop powered and charged also? You mentioned leaving the normal laptop charger/power cable in your laptop bag so that means it's not necessary while the laptop is connected to the dock right? Thanks.

    • @ZipTieNinja
      @ZipTieNinja  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This dock will power laptops up to 90 watt. The single type-c cable serves as the charging as well as dock connector in one. That way you can leave your factory supplied type-c power adapter in your go bag. Lenovo make several laptops that require a lot more power, and I believe that is why they have the Thunderbolt docks. There are multiple versions of the Thunderbolt dock, up to 230 Watts

      The dock is called "USB Type-C Gen2 Docking Station" but it works with USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 PCs just fine.
      This dock works with this ThinkBook that I have reviewed: th-cam.com/video/dZxCamGekoA/w-d-xo.html
      All ports of the dock work, but it doesn't deliver power to the ThinkBook. You have to use the "Lenovo Slim" power adapter to power the laptop, and because of this, the power button on the dock won't turn on / wake up the PC.
      Hope this helps!

      What this dock is able to output is entirely dependent on your video chipset on the laptop. Are you trying to use this with two monitors and the internal laptop screen? You may need to shut the laptop and change power settings so that it will stay on. Otherwise, it is very unusual to try to run a 4K display alongside of a display with extraordinary low resolution. 800x600 is the resolution of very old 4:3 monitors.
