In Poland it is actually not recommended by physiotherapists to make babies sit up if they don’t sit on their own because their core is too weak. They instead recommend to hold a baby leaning it to the side on the parent’s arm as it teaches the babies to lengthen the side they’re leaning on, which helps with learning to roll and pivot (both come before sitting).
Wow this video came at the perfect time! Our first baby is 3.5 months and is almost steady with holding her head up, so my husband and I were asking ourselves what we could do to help her with sitting.

Since my baby was born I’ve been having him sit up in bed, leaning on my legs and holding him giving him support. He had head control by 2 months and started rolling over on his own in the crib and onto his tummy right after he turned 3 months. My question is, did I hurt his back by having him sit up since he was just a week old? He seemed to like it as he was able to look around. He also doesn’t have normal wake windows. He’s pretty much been awake all day with a few short naps here and there since he was a month old and then sleeps all night, only to wake up to eat and get changed.
My son is 5M old tomorrow and he keeps throwing him self backwards and holding his body in a rigid plank if I try to help him sit in my lap or between my legs. He rolls no problem back to belly, but doesn’t roll belly to back 🤔
Sometimes placing a heavy toy which he can't lift in between his will be enough to motivate him to lean forward and sit up. In regards to rolling over from belly to back, it's a skill bubs can learn up until 7 months of age so he still has plenty of time to develop this skill. Just assist him in rolling over from belly to back to help him become familiar with the movement.

Hi! Nothing to worry about. Learning to roll over is a skill that bubs learn anywhere from 4-7months. So your little one still has plenty of time master this skill.

It all depends on your little one's skills. Usually at this age, they have some head control but their heads bob side to side and up and down. If this is your little one then I would wait a little longer. Then once she can hold it steady you can start working on supported sitting.

My baby is 8 months old- she can sit unsupported for a few seconds, she rolls both sides, can feed herself on a high chair and commando crawls or rather rotates all around on her tummy. however no sign of crawling on knees or sitting up on her own. paediatrician doesn’t seem to be worried. whats your take 🙂
Generally, they're something that I don't recommend using. But I am aware that some parents prefer to for multiple reasons. So if you do decide to use them it's important to limit the amount of time your little one spends in them per day. I have seen it recommended that the baby spends no more than 15 minutes per day in these seats - but I can't find research backing up this number. The reason you want to limit the amount of time is that it's important your baby still has plenty of free floor time to play for development. There are also some floor seats which are better than others. The ingenuity baby base 2-in-1 is better than the Bumbo. And the Upseat is probably the best option. But it really depends on the reason you are using them. There are also safety considerations which you should be aware of. Some of these include these seats shouldn't be placed on an elevated surface (like a bench) and once your baby can sit up they should no longer be used. There have been cases where babies have injured themselves after falling from these seats.

In Europe they say crawling first around 8 months than sitting around 9 months. It’s because baby’s back muscles will then be strong enough to sit down, so we can avoid scoliosis. Why is there such a difference between American and European recommendations?
I was wondering the same, but my pediatric doctor gave me green light and I decided to try and this method at 6-7 months, baby still looks quite fine at 11 months. But I am really wondering why the big difference between opinions on such an important topic. The only problem I noticed is my baby was leaning forward too briskly form time to time which was causing reflux, due to baby having diapers pushing against her tummy during this leaning. That's something I didn't like definitely . So I now think crawl first and then sit is the better sequence .
When you say Europe, are you sure it’s every country? Japan also has babies sitting up before crawling. It might just be your country’s culture or ideology that’s been passed down.
That’s nice, but how do we keep our baby calm while practicing? This is probably our biggest hurdle in any kind of training - he doesn’t sit still for any length of time in any position. Tummy time: he’s rolling and scuttling around in circles. Sitting: he’s trying to push with his feet so he can stand or lurching forward and puking because of the stomach pressure. I never understood how people’s babies can be so calm while ours is off the walls every waking moment.
I have to ask, while we are practicing helping our daughter sit independently, what IS recommended to sit baby in/prop her up if she's not yet fully coordinated or strong enough to sit without support? I don't want to cause hip or leg issues, but she seems to want to just sit and explore items and toys on her own. She is 20 weeks/4.5 months and has good head control in tummy time and when being held upright. For those times when I need to step away for a moment or want her to explore without us guiding her, is there a safe way to have her practice sitting and playing propped up (in addition to assisted sitting with adult methods)?

Hi! Yep you can start practicing supported sitting with your little one before they have learnt to roll over. As you mentioned he likes to sit up and play at this point anyway. So you might as well do it in a way to help his sitting skills. The key though is to make sure he still gets free floor time play each wake session (during the day of course!) to ensure he is given the opportunity to develop these skills. So a wake session might look like this. He wakes up and has a feed, then he plays while on his back, then tummy, then sitting up, then it's back to sleep for a nap. I hope that helps!
My baby is 2 weeks before 4 months and she has been doing this assisted seating for about 3 weeks. She started rolling over from her back to tummy time and vice versa during her 2nd month. I'm a large person and my child is pretty big (24 inch, 12 lbs 9 oz at 2 months apt). Every baby develops differently. My best friends baby is 10 months now and didn't start sitting up until 7 months and didn't roll over until 5 months. It is still important to teach them all of the skills when they start showing signs like, holding there head up and being fussy just bc they are laying down. My daughter isn't happy unless she is sitting up now and like I said she isn't even 4 months. She had great neck control at our 2 month apt, even our doctor made comments about not needing to support her head for her. Every baby is diff and don't worry to much over a couple months diff between development goals.

Because that is the correct advice. Don't put your baby in any developmental position that they couldn't get into themselves. This advice is only going to produce a baby that cannot play independently or without sitting.

Sounds like your little one is more interested in moving around at the moment. Once he masters crawling he might be happier to play in sitting.

Let her be frustrated and thus develop the skill herself. Props keep bahies too supported
You can also use the Boppy pillow backwards with the opening in back with parental protection at the back.

Hiiiiii mam my baby is 9th month running, but still can't sit independently, just trying to sit her tummy position...
My baby is 5m tomorrow and can sit up with help but he sounds like he's struggling to breathe when he does it. Leans forward and does short breaths
My almost 8 month old does that too!

Imo, i wouldnt have thought itd matter that much unless they sag to one side when sitting. Rolling, sitting, they both working on similar muscles.

@@raqueltara Babies can't get into any position when they're born but we still have to put them on their tummies. So it's not that general
