    Bamboo can grow mold over time. Stainless steel is so durable and easy to clean! Lasts forever. Doddl spoon designs are awesome. My 1.5 year old eats like a pro with this utensil set!

      We had silicone plates and bowls but then I realized they were not only imparting a bad smell but also a bad taste. We switched to stainless steel and it is so much better.

      I avoid stainless steel because it does give off continual trace amounts of heavy metals into the food. I learned this when my daughter was 8 and had high levels of heavy metals in her hair and body. We had to put her through expensive chelation therapy. We only use glass, porcelain, or ceramic now. Sometimes I’ll use a little plastic if it’s not with heat or fat.

    This entire series of videos is a must watch for new parents. How I wish we had these when my kids were babies! (although much of what we did in the 80-'s met these standards- no walkers for any of my kids and just regular bibs! You provide an excellent service with these as they are informative with rationale that helps parents understand the why's.

    My son has refused every sippy cup I've offered him, and I initially thought it was because he was born with all three mouth ties and no rooting reflex. But I'm now glad he hasn't gotten used to any of them. I don't want him to have more mouth issues! I instinctively bought a normal silicone cup the other day, and I will be trying to teach him on that instead.

    I agree, silicone smells so bad! I can't eat muffins baked in silicone forms I bought, had to throw it out... I actually used classic ceramic bowls with handles that I literally held in place while feeding. My little ones learned very quickly they shouldn't throw them and they have never broken anything, they learned to be very careful with fragile things...

    Love these recommendations! I am also a pediatric OT and I love the self-feeding dipping spoons (like NumNums) with little hole in the center to grip onto food. They have no correct orientation as there is no bowl, hold onto food nicely, and they are nice and small for baby hands and mouth :)

    In India we feed the babies in Silver bowls with silver spoon. They are considered the best since ages in our culture.

    • @mishamitra
      @mishamitra 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True. But my only concern is that the edges of the spoon might hurt the baby's mouth. Moreover silver tends to get oxidised soon. So maintenance & cleaning is a problem

    • @harithascorp
      @harithascorp 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@mishamitraIt doesn't get oxidized if you use it everyday.

    • @ishathakor
      @ishathakor หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@mishamitra most people my parents age and a lot of people my age were fed with these silver spoons and they didn't hurt their mouths nor did they oxidize. silver if used every day is relatively easy to maintain and the spoons are made to be an appropriate size for a babys mouth. in india babies are also generally fed by adults until they're quite a bit older so you wouldn't really be handing an infant a spoon in the first place so that's not a problem you have to worry about. feeding your children is a cutlural thing so kids who are old enough to eat on their own like 4 or 5 year olds often choose to be fed by an adult even if they are completely capable of feeding themselves. so it's basically just the adults controlling the spoons and they are able to ensure the baby isn't being hurt.

    • @Trammiliin_nr2
      @Trammiliin_nr2 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Silver is also antibacterial. Silver is used in many areas where its antibacterial properties are important, such as medicine (wound dressings, medical devices), water purification, and textiles (socks and sportswear). I think Indians knew for ages what they were doing without having scientific proof.
      In my culture (Northeastern Europe), a baby is given a silver spoon when they are born. I guess, we got this tradition from Germans as we were colonised by them for ages. In English, there's even a saying "born with a silver spoon in one's mouth" which implies that rich people back in the day used silver spoons and the poor used wood. I got a silver spoon from my grandmother with my name and birth date engraved on it. But in our culture, it's more like a keepsake, kept often in a display or in a fancy box. As my spoon isn't suitable for a baby to eat, but was an antique from my grandmother's collection, and I also got a silver sugar bowl with it, I use mine as a sugar spoon.
      But if I had a baby, I definitely wouldn't hesitate to use silver cutlery and tableware if the size and design were suitable for a baby.

    Solution to stinky silicone dinnerware: Preheat to 350 F and pop your favorite (clean) 100% silicone pieces into the oven for about an hour (checking every 20 minutes or so.) The stinky odors should bake off in the oven. (You’ll smell it!). I do this for our silicone ice trays, muffin tins, and soupercubes and works every time. Also check out the MATZ full coverage terry cloth bib, it's the only one I can keep on my messy toddler and keeps clothes completely clean! It's also been a lifesaver for roadtrips since she gets carsick and it goes on after she's buckled in so it's a safe way to keep the carseat clean too.

    I wish I'd had this video 5 years ago with my first! There was so much trial and error (mostly error!). We bought silicone, but I noticed it smelling like detergent all the time no matter how I rinsed. Big turn off for me, if not my bub. Quickly shifted to bamboo, melamine and just plain old porcelain and it all just felt "cleaner". One thing I never tried was those fruit mesh bags. The sight of a kid sucking the saliva and fruit squelch through one was too yuck for me 😂 but other mums swore by them. Now with bub number 2 sratimg solids in another month or two, I'll be more minimalist 😁. I need to get those spoons, though! So many gimmicky things in my cupboard that were useless (I'm looking at you silicon giraffe rubbery fork 😆). Thanks for the great video!

    My ebf son went through a phase of refusing his bottle at 3 months old (he goes to crèche twice per week), when searching for solutions a lot of UK mums recommended we try the Doidy cup by Bickiepegs, I don't know if you've seen that one. We bought the mini cup for my son to try and he likes to suck the milk out of the cup, sadly he couldn't figure out how to swallow it once it was in his mouth, but he's certainly had fun trying! 😂 I was pleased with the cup and the concept anyway and I'm confident that it will be helpful to learn to drink from an open cup when he's a bit older. I have ordered the bowl and full sized cup for when we're ready for weaning and to learn to drink water from a cup :) Thanks for the other advice and recommendations! I must admit we already have a spouted sippy cup but only one, I think I'll offer it for water in bed only, and avoid them altogether during the day. 😊

      100% bamboo products are different than just bamboo products.
      Coming from a textiles background, it takes a lot of extra water and chemicals to process bamboo into a soft enough pulp to be used for fibre material. It can even result in more waste than cotton processing, unfortunately. But if you're using raw bamboo, like in the products link, it's definitely a safe alternative.

    I loved the num num spoons initially. Small and easy to hold and held youghurt etc well at all angles. Ive done baby led weaning and she was able to use these herself at 6m. She didnt like the munkin ones which i was gifted. When she started showing an jnterest in our cutlery around 11m we switched to the doddl set of spoon, fork and knife (metal versions, not plastic). Tried a few others but these are by far the best. Initially she just used a spoon or fork depending on the meal but used the fork pretty easily with some help loading it at at the start. Now at 14m she uses both together well and independently with minimal assistance with loading etc. You can get a case too so great for going out for meals.
    The uk recommends free flow sippy cups or open cups. I have been unsuccessful at teaching her how to use a straw so far but dont use one myself much to model it.

    • @kathyharris1627
      @kathyharris1627 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you squeeze the straw the first time and remove the plastic from the bottom? I had the same issue until I realized that the straw needs to be squeezed to open it and that there was an almost invisible piece of plastic on the weight. Now it is one of my daughter's favorites. My only issue is she chews through the straw and it has to be replaced. I also don't recommend putting anything but water in it because it's very hard to clean. I have been lucky that my daughter has been good at drinking out of a glass since she was very small and can give her a cup for other beverages when we are not on the go.

      Hi! I am so sorry for the confusion and potential stress this may have caused. You're right, in a video I posted a few years back, I did recommend the 360 Trainer Cup, along with weighted straw cups and an open cup.
      Recently, however, some feeding therapists have raised concerns about potential issues with the 360 Cup. These concerns include:
      - Some kids use excessive jaw movements to get the liquid out.
      - It may cause a child's tongue to rest at the front of their mouth.
      - Some children tip their heads back when drinking from the 360 cup, which can force the tongue to work in an abnormal pattern and increase the risk of aspiration when they drink the last drops of liquid from the cup (which is where the liquid goes into the lungs instead of the stomach).
      I haven't found specific research confirming these concerns and some feeding therapists still recommend the 360 cup. I also continue to use it with my daughter - I just ensure the cup isn't near empty to reduce the likelihood that she will tilt her head too far back and watch her when she is using it.
      But given these concerns that some feeding therapists have expressed, it is something to consider when purchasing it.
      I still recommend using the open cup during mealtimes, as you're there to ensure the spills are minimal.
      Again I am sorry for any stress this may have caused.

    I disagree. Bamboo can get very messy and nasty with moisture it can start to split and then become unhygenic.
    I have silicone, 1 for snacks with 3 divided sections a bowl and a plate for hot foods. To avoid smell periodically I boil in a pan with vinegar and water for 5mins and bingo smell gone! Hygienic and no degregation like Bamboo.
    Also someone said in the comments bamboo layers made with glue so no way is that safe Plus silicone bowls and plates have the suction to.
    For Spoons we got the Doddle ones that are created by paediatric dietitians. My child loves them and is a pro using them.

      Personally I haven't experienced that with Bamboo, but with so many different products on the market I wouldn't be surprised at all if some have experienced that. We always wash and dry right after using so that likely has an impact. As long as you've found what works for you that's awesome!
      Re. the glue - not all are made that way, many are specifically Melamine, BPA, lead, plastic & phthalate free and those are what I go for.
      I haven't seen the Doddl spoons, but I'll take a look. Thanks for the tip!

I never put them in the dishwasher though, and we do try to wash them right away after meals. We have the rainbow swirl PrimaStella plates (found on Amazon).

    So would you not recommend ezpz then? Silicone. And the spoon seems to have a large bowl. But these seem to be one of the number one recommended products.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do recommend the EZPZ Tiny Cups, even though they are made of silicone. Since you would typically have water in the cup, the retention of smell is limited. The EZPZ Tiny Cup is one of the best open cups on the market-small enough for little ones to hold and bring to their mouth, and the weighted bottom makes it more challenging to topple over. While it can still tip over, it’s slightly more stable.
      I like using the EZPZ Tiny Cup during mealtimes when you're right there to help if needed. For free access to a drinking cup, such as during floor time play, I prefer weighted straw cups as they don't spill, and your little one can access the water whenever they want.

      @EmmaHubbard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      HI! This is a great question!
      I prefer using an open cup, like the EZPZ Tiny Cup, during mealtimes when you can be present to help minimize spills. For times when you're on the go or want your little one to have access to water while playing, a straw cup is a great choice.
      Recently, some feeding therapists have raised concerns about potential issues with the 360 Degree Cup, which is similar to the magic cup.
      Given the concerns that some feeding therapists have expressed, it is something to consider when purchasing it.
      If you do choose to use a magic cup, ensure it is relatively full to prevent your child from tilting their head too far back and monitor their head position while they use it.
      I hope that helps!

      @@EmmaHubbard that's all well but in my experience, they struggle to drink from a straw for a long time. Yeah tricky one, I loved the 360 cup with my 5yo and the 7mo has just started using it. We try open cups at meal times but the 360 can be in the living room or in the buggy without too much worry re spills which means more water getting in them overall. I think the tilting back issue is solved by keeping it topped up as much as poss. Maybe we'll skip straight to the straw sports type bottle the 5yo is using, I thought we were a while off that!

      Yep, I do like the EZPZ cup! I use both-the EZPZ tiny cup-when they eat during mealtime, as I am right there and can clean up the mess when they accidentally spill it. But when I want them to have access to a cup to drink from when they're playing on the ground throughout the day, I give them the straw cup, as this allows them to drink independently and minimises the spills.

      @@EmmaHubbard Yeah the handle is sturdy and thick, I've never seen one like this on internet or in the shops, usually they are very thin and are difficult to grab and bring to the mouth, while this one made everything so easy that my daughter really learned to use it quickly.
      The spoon slightly bends, but really a little bit so my daughter never "played" with it. And most importantly, the bowl is really "tiny" and it's perfect for a very small mouth. We are still using it now that she's almost one year old. Anyway, highly recommended.

      Not an expert in any way, but perhaps let your kid play with textures outside of mealtimes more?
      At some point my wife just mixed a small bowl with some dry rice and pasta, and let out son play with it. He loved just moving his hand through it and grabbing it for something like 2 days and then moved on to something else.
      Similarly she often just grabbed some fingerpaint and let him mess around with that (tip: the shirt-style bibs are ideal for that).
      If they can experience those things outside of mealtimes, they might be less inclined to explore during mealtimes.
      Might be way off the mark here, but what could it hurt to try. Worst case they still play with their food but at least got to try out some new things.

      Hi @lema91 it's great that your little one will play with the food. This is an essential step before eating the food.
      Your little one may be used to you feeding him and may be waiting for you to start. You could try having two spoons, loading up one spoon and giving it to him, and then having another spoon and seeing if he will place this spoon in his mouth.
      The other option is to ensure he is truly hungry at mealtimes. You do that by ensuring the meals are spaced apart (so maybe try to aim for every 2 1/2 hours), and if you're giving him formula or breastmilk, you offer the solid meal before the milk feed. If he has milk before the solids, he will be less likely to eat as he won't be hungry.

      Oh no don't. They work amazing and you can boil 5 mins with water and vinegar and the smell or any stains go.
      We have used silicone from day 1 and no issues with child turning away.
      Bamboo will split and become unhygenic and release the glue into food! They CANT be soaked and so are very challenging.

    You cannot soak silicone dishes. Or bamboo. My silicone dishes do not stink after 2 years.

      Another thing to consider is the highchair set-up. Have been able to adjust the highchair to give your little one more postural support? Also, some bubs need more time to play and get familiar with the food before they will start eating it.

    For older babies and toddlers, the plus sides of silicone bibs are enormous, and many kids use them with no issues, so I think they're worth a try and then if they're causing issues ditch them. Those cloth bibs are pointless. Better to just feed baby in a diaper for the first few months.

      I would be cautious about feeding a baby in just a diaper during the first few months. For some babies, the sensation of hot or cold food falling directly onto their skin, combined with the cleanup process (which often involves wiping their body with baby wipes, a wet paper towel, or a towel), can be overwhelming from a sensory perspective and might deter them from eating. So if mealtimes are challenging, consider keeping your little one dressed and using a simple bib to help them feel more comfortable. But if your little one is fine in just a diaper, then I wouldn't stress at all.

    As a mom with autism who has severe sensory issues around food, this video's visuals were a nightmare, i literally could not finish it. I'm so sorry.

    Sorry but that mini bib is not enough. Also things that we can just find in australia… or expensive.

      No advertising at all 🙂. I wasn’t (and haven’t ever been) sponsored by Munchkin or anyone else. Sponsors have to be legally disclosed, so I certainly would have made it clear if it was
