The Forgotten Ocarina of Time Revision You've Never Played.

- I remember my first playthrough of Ocarina of Time. I enjoyed almost every moment of it, the dungeons, the sidequests, the boss fights, but when the game ended, I wanted more. I begun looking for what other Zelda content I could indulge in, and I immediately sprung to Majora's Mask, but it was... different. So much so, that it wasn't necessarily what I was looking for.
For a time, I stopped thinking about the Ocarina of Time. Then it occurred to me that there WAS another version I could play, matter of fact, it was even a version published by Nintendo.
This interested me, so I searched google to find out this specific game's sales and how it came to be developed, and I found... nothing. Absolutely nowhere is there mention of the development or how much it sold. Was this game forgotten? Was I holding onto a lost fragment of history? Or was it that this game in particular was just underrated, or maybe even... underpromoted?
The game I speak of is none other than the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Another game mode on the GameCube port and a second playthrough on the 3ds version. How does it differ? Is it better than the original? Watch the video, and find out.

40:55 A Genuine Review of the Master Quest
42:07 Thanks for Watching. - เกม
Did people not watch the beginning? He explained it’s an “obscure game” in the regard that there aren’t many playthroughs/ reviews of it online, especially in recent time. Not that the game isn’t known or popular or anything…
I must be getting old if master quest is now believed to be some rare unheard of oot remake lol
After all the hyping up I was like "I swear, if it's just Master Quest he's talking about."
😂😂😂 I'm sorry
same. I was just thinking, "i'm pretty sure near everybody who loves OoT knows about Master Quest but lets keep watching just to see if he's talking about some obscure piece of media."
nope, just MQ.
side note: not a remake.
it is a remix of OOT, everything is essentially the same as the original but things are just mixed around. it is just like the second quest of Zelda 1 but even more subtle.
Right? I mean, the Mast Quest IS poorly documented, it's weird that we don't have more from the game-play side of the community.
For real. It's not even forgotten about... It's IN the 3DS version so you can't even say it's been a while since people have seen it.
I FORGOT? No.. YOU forgot. I would never forget.
I can’t believe bro got his hands on The Myth of Link: Flute of Space😭
What? Are you ok? That's not what game this video is about, this video is about The Tale of Ganondorf: Gust Baton
@@AxerzenThe Song of Saria: The Earthen Piccolo
The Wind Wanker
@@hichaelhighers bro.
10:30 That's not the intended solution, but it's cool that it worked. You were expected to use the torch to light a deku stick, to light the bomb hanging on that wall right there, and then toss that bomb in the middle before it exploded. That's why they gave you the torch and put a dekubaba there for you to get a source of deku sticks if you needed them.
Surprised to see this on my front page, but was a very good overview of Master Quest, I genuinely didnt know it had so many changes outside of the cow stuff
Front page huh? Nice. Glad to see. Thanks for watching and I'm glad I could inform you
@@Axerzenthis was also on my front page! :)
I never realized how uncommon this game is. It came with WW when my mom got it for us when I was a kid, but the funny thing is that it was actually the first time I beat OOT as a kid lol I played the original but for some reason I could never beat it when I was younger, until MQ.
This is actually the exact reason it was the version I played. Played the disc on GameCube with WW and never bothered to buy the original for 64
In my region it wasn't even given out with Wind Waker. It was a free preorder bonus you got when you put a $5 deposit on WW (like you got it at time of deposit, not at time of pick up, so even if you never intended to actually pick up WW it was basically a $5 game).
That sounds similar to my experience with the Water Temple. Never had any trouble with the OG Water Temple as a kid but I somehow struggle with the easier 3DS version of it as an adult
It was literally bundled in with OoT 3D
I remember playing this on the 3DS version when I was a kid. Ganon took out like half of my health (or was it more? I don't recall very well) in a single hit and I was like "DUDE WHAT THE HECK!??". Simpler times. A good remake
Simpler times bro. OoT 3D came out when I was 5!
3DS is double damage in addition to master quest
@@seanarooni you can imagine my surprise when I found out 🐧 but I didn't remember Ganon doing that much damage xD poor little me
I haven't finished the video, but one thing to mention about Master Quest is that much or most of the OoT modding scene is built around it. More accurately, it's built around a leaked debug build of Master Quest. This has all the debugging information left in it, so it was much easier to reverse engineer. The OoT decompilation is of this version--though there's N64 v1.0 support being added too--and many legacy OoT tools only supported this.
There is some support for this alrdy. Look at ship of harkinian for example, you can switch to ganon red blood cough from 1.0 tho I think those are hex edits because if it were c you’d have to rebuild right? Also modders now choose to re-patch their final builds with the 1.0 rom but that’s just for convenience. Under the hood it’s still debug mostly.
I remember pre-ordering wind waker and it being delayed for 3 years and them coming out and saying we would get this as a pre-order bonus for the wait and I liked it better than wind waker.
Thats how i got it too! That was my first preorder bonus. I was a kid back then and this was my first experience with i wasnt 13 yet
While this is amazing to see, this was literally my next project. There were NO videos with a walkthrough explaining the changes from MQ. You did fantastic, and what a great watch so far. I'm glad the OoT community has this video! Glad I "watched to the end"
Aww man. That happened to me with a Shadow the Hedgehog video recently haha
but thank you
You still didn’t do the intended thing with the bomb puzzle lmao. You’re supposed to light the bomb on the entrance of the room on the wall. It’ll fall down and then you can put it in between the other bombs
yk what, its fine...
Well shit, I didn't know master quest was THAT in-depth of a retooling. Everyone always told me that it was the same as the base game, just with mirrored dungeons. I didnt realize they had NEW content.
I had this thought as well. They acted like it was nothing new and only released a few copies, like bro it's literally an entirely new game.
@@Axerzen I'll have to keep it in mind if I ever decide to replay the game.
That mirrored thing was just the Nintendo 3DS version. The GameCube version isn't mirrored but has all the dungeon changes.
@@KylerFlame the 3ds has changes in the dungeon.
@@Axerzen "like bro it's literally an entirely new game."
No, it's not.
This was a really refreshing take on presenting MQ. Well done my friend!
Thank you brother
I actually have this version and have 100% completed master quest but only once. It was pretty great and I never really forgot about it, rather it just wasn't my main focus when I replayed the game.
I guess it was just the Remembered Zelda Game You HAVE Played. 😂
And here I thought you were gonna do the MORE obvious thing of lighting the bomb on the wall with a stick to make it drop - y'know, the bomb flower *directly* next to the infinitely respawning Deku Baba that gives you infinite sticks - then placing the newly lit bomb in the blank space at the base of the stairs.
I wanted to mention this, but honestly I think my idea was enough to show for it
@@Axerzen Well, I didn't think it would work, but since it did, props to you for being creative.
And yeah, I'd say the child dungeons are probably the better part of MQ - the quality dips a bit when you get to the adult dungeons. In my opinion, the "ideal" OoT would be MQ child dungeons (except BotW), MQ ice cavern, and everything else would be the original.
I actually own the GameCube game and never really played the master quest since I already also had the 3ds remake, but it still makes me feel somewhat cool that I knew exactly what game you were talking abt in the beginning
You are cool bro. (also you have a very nice name... if you know what I mean)
Holy Cow, all of this and it's just the Master Quest. I think this insane. You can't find sale information because it was a bonus to the wind waker if my memory is correct 😂
I love the I am all of me cameo
Tbh it was at the top of my music folder cuz it starts with an A so I saw it first and decided to go with it lol
@@Axerzen It's so good I always have it playing in the background when I'm doing anything
I had this on the GameCube right around the same time wind waker came out. Never got to beat it and unfortunately as I was recently searching for it I realized that my copy is lost somewhere now.😢 Maybe one day it will turn up but I really want to give it a shot in my older age. Especially since I just played through OoT again and just like you, I wanted more and MM isn’t satisfying that urge
Master Quest was the first time I interacted with Ocarina of Time. It came in a double-pack with Wind Waker and the Gamecube I bought.
I watched all of that.
Good review. I have the 3DS remakes of OoT and MM.
I beat OoT, then beat Majora's Mask, then 100%ed Oot, then played through Master Quest, then 100%ed Majora's Mask.
Master Quest was definitely a grind. But despite the confusion and arduous puzzles, I still found it really fun to beat.
You couldn't pay me enough to play it again, though. 😂😅
There's only a couple parts that make it not very replayable for me but those parts are enough for me to understand your reasoning lmao
I’ve never seen anyone do the bomb puzzle the way you did it, super cool you thought of that actually. I’ve always seen it done by lighting the bomb on the wall with the stick and when it falls you can place it with the others.
I honestly never knew this existed, great video and great job of explaining everything!
Im glad to inform you brother. Thanks!
In the bomb room in the dongo's cavern You can literally just use a deku stick on the bombflower across from the Deku baba
I knew you had to be talking about master quest, it’s a version of the game I always knew existed but never really herd anything about beyond a mention, honestly I thought that master quest was the gold cartridge but that’s just the preorder cart, think a friend of mine told me that when I was younger, either way I’m glad to see you making a video on such a obscure version of the game.
Another thing I find interesting about that GameCube version of OOT is that is the version that the first blind guy to beat the game used I believe it was because the audio cues were better than the n64 version
You're telling me some blind guy beat the game that gave me so much trouble???
@@Axerzen not the master quest version but the gamecube version of oot
@@CaptainSNES ohhh. Still that is insane
Me: "It would be quite ridiculous if it refers to master quest, I hope it's not that"
The video:
39:01 bro had to lock in🗿 (I watched all of that btw)
W for watching the whole thing. Ngl I've watched this twice already (plus everything on repeat during editing) cuz I cook too hard
I watched all of that! Remember beating this when I was younger, was so hyped and satisfied after each dungeon!
wow thank you
No one forgot about this lmao. It was called Ura Zelda in development and has a very lengthy development history, starting out as a 64DD second quest expansion before becoming a Wind Waker GameCube preorder bonus. It also got bundled in and further modified with the 3DS version.
huh, I always thought master quest was well known but we dont talk about it because its like $150 for a copy. (mine was lost in home burglary)
But master quest is available on the 3DS version as well. Good thing we still have access to the 3DS stor-... Nevermind. Thanks nintendo, very cool.
you could always go sailing...
When you started talking about Ocarina of Time Remake I knew about Master Quest cause I bought it a long time ago. But I couldn't play it cause it was just too frustrating for me.
understandable have a great day
Loved the video, I watched all of that
W bro thank you
Thank you. I played the original one as a kid, I gave up at the fire porton of ganondorf's castle, I never tried again. Now that I know it's doable I want to finally finish it.
you got this bro
How did The Master Quest video pop-off, it was always that mode i shied away from but it time to give it a little visit.
honestly idk but hey i aint complainin
I love your channel!
Thank you!
The amazing "Ura" Zelda lol. Just imagine if OOT got its life on the 64DD instead of being nerfed, its already considered one of the best games of all time, its just crazy to think the OOT we got wasnt even its max potential.
10:35 I find it funny how he ignored the bomb on the wall near the torch, but inadvertently
The cooking is real. Never knew about any of the changes in Master Quest until now, and your style / editing made the whole video very enjoyable.
New zelda content creator to watch now, cheers 🧡
Edit: I also love how every segment has it's own splash theme for the background, appeals to the zoomer brain.
Wow so nice. Thank you for liking.
Yeah I got zoomer brain too, sometimes the background just hypnotizes me
@@Axerzen Exactlyyy
I never got to experience Master Quest on the Gamecube, but I have played the 3DS version, which has a mirrored map in Master Quest for some reason.
Ah damn I didn't realize you were just talking about Master Quest 😭
lol
Well I better boot my 3DS up and start playing this. Question is, where did I put that thing?
I watched all of that + gimme my cookie + great vid + algorithm comment + I'm gonna give the game a spin.
Thank + you
Awesome Video Bro.
thanks
No Problem.
People still talk about it sometimes, but it's the completely the same game on the overworld, the dungeons are mixed up a bit but not like redesigned, all the architecture is the way it was, only objects and enemies are different. I actually fairly recently bought a jp copy of the collector disk thingy. It came in a little magazine instead of the standard gamecube case with sleeve.
One of these days I might want to try to find one of those rom dumps on a physical cart to have it on the n64, that might be cool.
I’m going to assume you’re talking about MQ before you even reveal it… The reason why people don’t talk about it: The dungeons suck so much that nobody played it more than once. The OoT Randomizers have MQ dungeons as an option to randomize, to have a random number of dungeons or all of them as their MQ counterparts though.
As I’m watching the video though, Gohma eggs aren’t new, newly placed sure, but they’re in the ceilings of deku tree basement and gohma lays them in her fight.
And those are not piranha plants, that’s a Mario enemy, those are Deku Baba
I got stuck in the well and never played again lol (I did beat Spirit first though)
Also the cow tumors are a moo-d
I certainly did not forget about this I have my own copy of it on GameCube
Nor did I forget my own copy of mine on the 3DS.
Those of us who remember this, we knew this was Ura Zelda all along.
Or Legend of Zelda Master Quest.
10:08 - I laughed at the fact you found the oversight before the intended method; you're intended to use a lit deku stick to knock down the bomb flower on the wall to blow up the rest of them with
But yeah, overall a fun watch
Master Quest was the first version of the game I played. It's my preferred way to play.
I actually own that and the gamecube collectors edition with zelda 1, 2, oot and, majoras mask. I had a feeling it was gonna be one of those two mentioned.
im watching this just days after i unlocked master quest mode on the 3ds version
Apparently this game is essentially OOT, plus the elements of the URA (N64 DD) Zelda that didn't make it to MM. There are some extensive TH-cam videos about the topic
I never knew mq was THAT different. I never Finisher oot, im Stuck at the water dungeon for like 8 years😂 but I loved it while I played it (Im planning on finishing it this year😂) I always thought that mq would just be a mirrored Version so I didnt really care about it and I also didnt really see many people playing it at all. It's weird, they could have marketed it so much better
It had so much potential
ive never played master quest but i want to now i didnt finsih the video cause of spoilers but i will come back once if finished it
He's here!!!!!
Listening to all your trouble really makes me wonder how I breezed through Master Quest as a child. I mean, I tag-teamed it with my sister so I never got to the point of frustration rage the same way other people might, but still... I don't even remember this being hard to figure out.
maybe I just have a smaller brain than a child lol
@@Axerzen OR less of a sponge. It could have just been the fact that I was an absorbent little mind ready to yum up the OOT logic at the time.
@@YourWaywardDestiny That is true actually

Bro called the Deku Baba a Piranha Plant and I missed it 😭
you mean I called a pirahna plant a pirahna plant, right? Deku babas are those nut looking things
You can ignore taking DMG from the giant squid in the Lord jabbu jabbu by using the boomerang at the moment he is about to hit you. Alternatively, you can also us well placed bombs, if memory serves.
oh. thanks
Yooo I got this disk when I preordered Windwaker. Master Quest actually slaps. It's the definitive way to play OoT for me!
Love this video but I thought everyone knew about master quest? But it could just be me because I grew up with the 3ds remake lol 😭
I love the master quest dungeons
I spent soo much time on this game
No, I didn't forget about it. I just recall the weird obtuse time breaking puzzle in The Spirit temple and go. "Wow, yeah, I subconsciously suppress these weird design choices."
This video is making me consider playing master quest for the first time just to see how the differences in it will confuse me 😂
um... The great fairy you went to after getting the golden gauntlets, that is in the normal oot too, that fairy always gave Double Defense
Yeah I know it wasn't any different but I never got it in the original game. I had to mention it because it made the game a bit too easy
@@Axerzen Fair, Just wanted to point it out, did not know if you knew because my first couple of times beating OOT I did not get that upgrade so figured you skipped it too, just wanted to point it out.

@Axerzen to waste our time going back to the temple of time on repeat apparently
ive watched all of that and it was peak amazing video really well edited and entertaining i thought master quest was just some port not this insane new is game i live in a small country we do not have many video game stores and its hard to come by nerds like me trying to find a dnd game is pain so theirs is like only one big video game store they buy used games and they always had a sealed and framed copy of master quest on their window i had no clue it was a game like this makes me wanna buy it but to bad it probably cost a lot and i do not have a n64 their like one of the only retro game shop in my area(might emulate it tho *cough*) any way amazing video i still hate how you have so little subs my man! like you deserve so much more and im sure it will come soon and i love getting cold in an ice temple and making it hurt my feelings

Icecream hurt me 😂
@@Axerzen DONT TELL THEM I EMULATED THE INSIDE STORY REMAKE FOR FOOTAGE FOR A SECOND CHANNEL VIDEO THEIR GONNA GET ME
I WATCHED all of that. :)
I literally played this but I completely forgot how different it was from the original. I guess it's because "Master Mode" in some other Zelda games is just the same experience with stronger enemies or more of the same enemies. This version actually reroutes the dungeons completely
Really? That's how others are? I'm only familiar with Zelda 1's 2nd quest and this one. So really this game's handling of it was pretty expected (and actually a bit "weaker" since Zelda 1's changes nearly everything).
@@fallouthirteen Yeah, I think the main change in some games is just a damage multiplier. In BOTW and TOTK the enemies are upgraded with some other minor tweaks. The routes of specific locations being drastically changed is exclusive to OOT and Zelda 1 as far as I know
i got bamboozled 😭
How did you do this background loop?
I see you make videos. I'm glad you asked. Essentially I use a free photoshop named Pixlr to make backgrounds. First I make a 720p zoomed in version of a background. I use pngs and alter them however they want and line them up to look how I want (but I make sure they're symmetrical). Then I make a new 4k image and copy and paste the 720p one in rows to make the background. Then on premiere pro (what I use to edit) I make a keyframe at the very top left of the picture and a keyframe on the very bottom right corner. Then I have it go either up or down whenever I want it to. It's pretty cool
@@Axerzen oh so you aöways manually keyframe the background? I tried to do something like that but when I had longer clips it was a bit stressful
@@draggy725 well what I do basically is just put key frames and then multiply the clip and put it in reverse motion so it plays on a loop technically. I don't always manually put in the key frames, but I do for that first minute and then it loops.
I think I'm part of a fairly exclusive group. I've only ever beat Master Quest and never vanilla OoT.
Another front page zelda video? Don't mind if I do :3
nobody talks about MQ because MQ is a half baked version of what it should have been and was underwhelming. There are romhacks for OOT that restore what the dungeons were supposed to be like when it was still URA zelda, but everything after the child dungeons are very clearly unfinished.
Hmm. Yk you're right. The beginning has many changes, and that IS why my chapters on them are longer, but still I'd say the dungeons after are still very decent.
I did indeed watch all of that
Thank you.
Weird I get this recommended I LITERALLY just finished 100% master quest today
wow. Thats freaky
I can't tell if you're actually serious about the 'bombing the staircase' puzzle in Dodongo's Cavern or not. You do know you can light the fuses of Bomb Flowers growing out of walls with lit Deku Sticks and that doing so causes them to drop to the ground, right?
yeah I kinda learned that afterwards... haha
@@Axerzen Wait, so for however long you've been playing Ocarina of Time, you never used the shortcut from Goron City to the Lost Woods to get Saria's Song? @@Axerzen You think that's something? The other version of OoT for GCN (it also inlcuded Zelda 1, 2, Majora's Mask, and a demo for Wind Waker) was given out as a subscription gift with Nintendo Power. Usually the gift they would include with a year's subscription was one of their official player's guides. They made kind of a deal about it because with it the entire Zelda main franchise (you know, excluding the CDi stuff of course) was playable on the GCN (with the GBA player adapter for the GBA and GBC games).
