SDR has made significant advances since this video was made. In 2013 it was a fairly new concept, now there are software interfaces that are starting to emulate the front panels of expensive HAM radio receivers at a fraction of the cost of the hardware.
With an up-converter ahead of the antenna input you can listen to frequencies lower than the CB band, short wave radio and HF amateur transmissions. 73 KB8DNS
Another nifty application to get to use with these is RTL_433 which can decode a lot of random 315, 433, and 900 MHz (among other) sensors ranging from thermometers to car TPMS sensors. And RTLAMR for utility meters that beacon their readings.
It even works under Linux. GQRX is even in the Ubuntu & Linux Mint respositories so installation is super easy. You can use any USB DVBT Stick that has the RTL 920T2 chip inside. However you can't listen to AM radio with it since AM brodcasts at lower frequencies and the USB stick only starts receiving at 24,869 megahertz. When you add a better antenna (an active one with amplifier) your reception quality will be even better.

Perfect device and presentation .... it offers a completely new world for those who can not yet buy an expensive scanner, and can now experience it on the PC at home. However, it can not replace a radio scanner yet, because the dongle software does not (yet) succeed in actually 'scanning' through the frequencies, like a radio scanner is able to do.
You can also use RTL-SDR with SDR# to listen to FM radio VHF signals. You can also use a SpyVerter to upconvert HF(shortwave) and AM radio signals. The SypVerter converts the signal up 60MHz. The RTL-SDR also natively supports the HF frequency band but not as good as VHF. There are many other SDR radios and other software for listening to radio signals.
And from 137.1, 137.62, 137.9 and 137.92 you can get the NOAA satellites with the APT signal and the Meteor-M N2 satellite with the LRPT signal with a QFH antenna.
This was truly a great video it inspired a lot. I will definitely be trying this and giving you an update on how everything work out. I grabbed a bunch of software for PC and MAC to test with this. By the way Gqrx-2.16 works on the latest Mac OS if anyone is wondering. I have it running right now now I'm curious to see if I can get the device to work, I can't wait. Thanks so much... Listening to a Police Radio is nothing Special, my old Vaccume Tube Zenith Radio could listen Police when they used AM Radios. and Later with my Radio Shack portable AM-FM-SW-HF radio, when they moved to VHF.

Rather than being a representation of the audio in the form of different wavelengths, digital signals are ones and zeros, just like in a computer, being transferred through the air. You'd need a software which can decode the digital signal into picture and sound, like your TV does.
there are software programs that will decrypt the digital stations, in my area most of the digital stuff is not secured, all our fire and taxi's are digital but not encrypted, it seems to be quite common here. the bottom line is with software even digital can be heard.

8 Bit Guy - I used to be able to SEE peoples CRT screens with my Radio. I would drive around in my Scooby Van and with my TV antenna mounted on the Roof , I could see ANYONES PC or Mac screen, provided they were Still using a CRT screen. when we all swiched to LCD monitors that all Stopped. but, it did not deter me as many Company refuse to upgrade to LCD for a long time.
Pretty simple actually, back then most people used an RF adapter to convert video signals to watch on a TV, be it a VCR, PC or other device. I had a Manual Tune Color TV and a High Gain Antenna on a rotor. because , most transmisions were on Ch 1 - 3 in the OLD color TV frequency. but, also CRT computer monitors basicly transmited RF even though they might be connected with a PC - PS/2 connector.

my Scanner can Tune down to 100 Khz and my Home Scanner can tune down to 30 khz !!!!!!! BOTH Scanners and scan both Analog and Digital signals and Demodulate them. the BOTH Scanners have continuous coverage from 100 khz to 3305 Mhz and 30 Khz - 5000 Mhz !!!!!! no gaps in coverage, Except for FED mandated cell frequency block. with just Two Scanners , I can hear anything everything.
@JadonGamer Wideband Communications Receiver are Superior to SDR in everyway, they can scan from >100 khz to 3.4 Ghz continuous * except Cellular, however some W-CR use SDR for handleing Digital Communications better. A ICOM receive can Demodulate LMR simulcast better than most Scanners . however SDR scanner can do Digital Trunking better. All Communications Receivers don't do Trunking at all, but they can SCAN Trunking Conventionally and with Dual Receivers.

The Zombie Block Tough luck, you need to have a device with unlocked firmware. You need to look for something with the RTL2832U chip. Searching for that on eBay or AliExpress should do the job.
That likely won’t work. You need a RTL2832U dongle. You can buy much better quality ones, and find guides to windows installation on rtl-sdr.com (Nooelec if you’re in Canada) or you can grab a really cheap dongle off of eBay for $8.
Razz Pi , but its also a Computer, so short answer is you cant. Commerical digital scanner products are the BEST you can get. with the last hassle. besides Modern Digital Scanners use SDR in the Design and future Scanners may use Multiple SDR in the Design.
I know its been many nonths since u asked so u probly already got it, but I'm running os x 10.6.8, downloaded gqrx, plugged in my sdr usb dongle, started-up gqrx & that was it... worked with no problem, but like I said I'm running 10.6.8 snow leopard... I haven't tried on any other os.
I don't necessarily prefer old macs. But I don't like throwing computers away because they are old as long as they are still useful.

SDR is no FReplacement for a HF/SW Communications Receiver , has Finer Controlls and FILTERS to perfect the Audio.

SDR is a poor mans Hand Held Digital Scanner. you cant take SDR with you, and HH Digital Scanner does more.
It would be cool if you did more Mac ham radio videos. I'm primarily a Mac user and a ham, and there isn't a whole shedload of good content out there.
You might even get better reception with the antenna on a cookie sheet. Gives a better ground plane.

I've listened to Shortwave on mine. Cuba, France, Germany, Greece, Saudi Arabia.
Not that it matters anymore, but does it let you access the cellular frequencies? Police scanners have those locked out under FCC rules.

Tried to install GQRX on my MacBook Pro and the program dialog box "Gqrx can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
Where is the Mac? The USB dongle doesn´t works with OSX, only windows.
You can also decode Pager signals! But i don't think that this is going to work on Mac OS tho…
my Digital SCOUT Frequency Counter can TRACK and DECODE paging signals and Display the TEXT and replays.
I don't think it's for picking up TV shows in Europe. At least in the UK, we swapped to digital TV signals

but its Excellent for creating an Unblocked SCANNER.

8 Bit Guy - I used to be able to SEE peoples CRT screens with my Radio. I would drive around in my Scooby Van and with my TV antenna mounted on the Roof , I could see ANYONES PC or Mac screen, provided they were Still using a CRT screen. when we all swiched to LCD monitors that all Stopped. but, it did not deter me as many Company refuse to upgrade to LCD for a long time.

Pretty simple actually, back then most people used an RF adapter to convert video signals to watch on a TV, be it a VCR, PC or other device. I had a Manual Tune Color TV and a High Gain Antenna on a rotor. because , most transmisions were on Ch 1 - 3 in the OLD color TV frequency. but, also CRT computer monitors basicly transmited RF even though they might be connected with a PC - PS/2 connector.

NOPE, Bluetooth operates in the GHZ frequency range in SHF. it cannot receive HF or even VHF/UHF.

my Scanner can Tune down to 100 Khz and my Home Scanner can tune down to 30 khz !!!!!!!

The Zombie Block Tough luck, you need to have a device with unlocked firmware. You need to look for something with the RTL2832U chip. Searching for that on eBay or AliExpress should do the job.
That likely won’t work. You need a RTL2832U dongle. You can buy much better quality ones, and find guides to windows installation on rtl-sdr.com (Nooelec if you’re in Canada) or you can grab a really cheap dongle off of eBay for $8.

Im using an Apple iMac with OS X no Microsoft Windows software on my iMac so will it work?
I know its been many nonths since u asked so u probly already got it, but I'm running os x 10.6.8, downloaded gqrx, plugged in my sdr usb dongle, started-up gqrx & that was it... worked with no problem, but like I said I'm running 10.6.8 snow leopard... I haven't tried on any other os.
