    Love these ‘park bench’ comparison videos. I’m always curious to see how well radios perform with tough RFI environments, and how well they receive weak signals. It’d be especially interesting when comparing high end HTs against each other (and even cheaper Chinese radios).
    Keep ‘em coming!

    It's also good to know that the tree behind you isn't going anywhere. It is firmly chained to the table you were using and that table looks to be too heavy to carry. It's important to protect against tree theft by chaining them to heavy tables. I also love my FT-5DR and will not consider chaining it to anything as of right now. But I'll keep and open mind.

    I think overall, the Kenwood had the best audio. I own a VX-6 I bought new in Early August of this year. I think the VX-6 is the best Handheld for the price currently on the Market. I bought it to replace my VX-8 that was stolen out of my vehicle in June. Then in Early October I found a MARS Modded VX-8 at The San Diego HRO Store with some nice extras for $200.00. I JUMPED on that deal! I would LOVE to see you do this Bench Test on a VX-8.
    My VX-6 is my Everyday Radio. I keep my VX-8 for Special Event use, and Search and Rescue deployments.
    I MIGHT loan my VX-6 out in an emergency, but NOBODY but me touches my Beloved VX-8, LOL!

    Stoked to see this, Josh. I can't wait for the "radio picks" followup. I promised my son I'd give him an HT if he passed his tech (he's low key into radio, in the way the 20 year olds are about stuff their father does) so I'm thinking about upgrading mine. It's nice to see what the expensive toys do, especially in comparison to the Alinco you previously tested, since that's what I have now. I love the fact the icom does its magic thing with repeaters based on where you are, given that I travel so much, but the price is ...wow! Still.....could there be one in my future? Might depend on your next video!

    It’s a little strange because the ICOM had the 3rd highest SNR @2 meters but sounded better than the Yaesu and Kenwood to my ears.
    So clearly it’s not all SNR, it’s protocol, transceiver, gain, etc…
    Awesome test!

  • @N0SSC
    @N0SSC ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The VX-6R TX sounded like it was super wideband, almost like a wireless mic, while the rest of the lot sound crunchy, like I’d expect VHF/UHF radio to sound. Interesting

      This video makes me happy I chose the FT5dr on preorder.Sight unseen and dropping $550, it better score near the top.
      IMO the waterproofing is the reason it doesn’t sound as loud or clear as the ICOM.
      Using a Diamond antenna for now. Much better than the stock rubber ducky.
      Have a Signal Stick for my BaoFeng. I wonder would the SS be much better than the Diamond across all bands. Look forward to a FT5dr antenna comparison test.

  • @TomSP9TL

    The biggest downside of Yaesu HTs is its speaker. So quiet compared to many other radios, especially the Chinese ones, whether it's a Bao or Wouxun, TYT, AnyTone etc. I think the speaker in FT5D is a little bit better than all previous Yaesu models. I've had the VX6 and built-wise I think was the best out of all HTs on the market. Its speaker was so tiny, but the audio was very clear.
    From your video I can clearly see that the mic gain on the FT5D is way behind the ID52.
    Thank you for the test!

    • @GordLamb
      @GordLamb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. I've got the VX8DR and I adore it, except for the quiet speaker and lack of GPS. I can't stand touch screens and flashy interfaces, and the VX8DR is to compact and fast to navigate... but man I wish it was louder.

    Thanks for this interesting bench.
    As you alluded in the Baofeng test video, recording a test message then play it back with a speaker always at the same volume setting and distance from the radio for every TX tests would be a good methodology upgrade. So you/we can be assured that there is no bias (ie: speaking in the radio at different loudness).

  • @johnk8091
    @johnk8091 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The audio for both RX and TX was clearly won by the Icom. However, as you pointed out, the SNR results are not entirely conclusive - SNR is dependent on ERP. And ERP between the units will not be 100 % the same, age of battery, state of charge of each battery will give different ERP levels and different results. Interesting though, thanks Josh

    Under normal circumstances, like those depicted in the video, the use of an SMA to BNC adapter won't likely make a noticeable difference, it could make the difference in a contact at the limits of the radio's capabilities. The adapter adds 3/4 inch to the length of an antenna, thereby changing its resonant length AND introduces more loss into the RF path. YMMV...

    Discontinued Kenwood TH-D74 is the oldest of the $$$ bunch. However it has KISS & TNC modem via bluetooth. The FT5D has the worst UI experience for texting/APRS along with terrible touch screen. ID-52a had great UI experience but lacking TNC modem. If the Kenwood had a ID-52 scope band it would be most-wanted radio on the internet....I believe.

    Nice comparison and good to see the VX6 as the control. It's a great little radio and a solid, dependable little HT.
    My experience of the ft5d hasn't been great. I bought one new and it had a faulty programming switch which stopped the radio booting every now and then. The replacement radio seemed fine but the lettering started to wear off the buttons after only a couple of months of very light use. The keypad has now been replaced under warranty but I've lost any confidence in the radio. Its transmitted audio is also pretty weak. My old ft2d is WAY better. Its transmitted audio is loud and punchy - streets ahead of the ft5d.
    If I had to keep just one radio for VHF/UHF FM use, it would be the VX6. Solid, reliable and pretty much bomb proof.

    I'm wondering why you didn't include the Kenwood NX5900,NX5400. That is what I need data on. It's either A Kenwood or a ICOM

    So crazy that they have to chain those tables to the trees. LOL I guess I have never hear of a picnic tables being stolen. I wonder what the street value of a picnic table really is? LOL

      It’s not to primarily to prevent stealing. It’s to prevent someone from dragging one of the table to another for a larger family party. They rent pavilions and don’t want people just moving all the tables around.

    I’ve been waiting for you to do something like this,I’m a little conflicted ,I’m hoping Kenwood bring out a new HT soon and not sure if I should wait for that,or should I go for the FT5 as I do want to play on APRS? The ID52 is an amazing ,but expensive piece of kit,that doesn’t have true APRS-which ever one I go for I will be running with the new Open Spot 4 pro,any advice gratefully recived 😊

    As much as I want to upgrade, it seems every time I make a purchase a better version of the same radio comes out. I have the 857 (not the D) the 991 (not the A) and the FTM-100. But thanks Josh, I really appreciate the work you do to compare the options! Any chance Yaesu is currently working on the FT-5DRX, or whatever the next best version will be?

    awesome video brother. have you done this test with the wouxun kg-uv9d Mate? it would be cool to see where it lines up with the others.

    Like your test setup. But I’m curious why you don’t make a test with the stock antenna’s. Maybe next time. I see, one might think, who buys such a radio can afford another antenna. But maybe one bought it to get the best out of the box.

      I have tested stock antennas before. Most can’t even make it back to my home. So we written off most rubber duck antennas.

    I’ve got the VX-6R and love it, but can’t pull in the shortwave stations. Does anyone have antenna suggestions that might improve accessing shortwave?

    IMHO comparing SNR is a bad idea because it is totally relative to the local, current, noise level at the QTH. I think that the correct way is to to compare received signal strength in dBm (and ignore local variable noise floor). Then, for 70cm, VX-6R and "first baofeng" we have the same signal level -133.4dBm at the receiver site. Also Kenwood D74, FT5DR, GT-5R have stronger signals than BF-F8HP (currently number one on the list). On 2m for VX-6R we have -98.1dBm and it should be much higher on the list.

    I have the Icom and Yaesu. I've done comparison tests live on our Statewide Network, "SARnet". Are you ready for this?
    My Anytone 878 won the audio sound test. So, next test. Icom vs Yaesu vs Anytone. I'll wait.

    Hey great video, thanks! What's your thoughts about the Alinco 1226 DJ-MD-5-GPS DMR VHF/UHF ! Range, features, worth it or not outside an urban area, do we need to change the antenna? Thanks a lot for you feedback from 🇨🇭
