    I'm sure a 1Ghz 4 system could do most of the emulators out there. I've emulated an NES and SNES on 300 Mhz G3 machines and it worked fine. Not sure on the Genesis/Megadrive. Give it a try and find out!

    OpenEmu is the way to go for Mac as of 2016, it has a collection manager and pulls in all of the cores you need for most old console systems.

      I'm with you here. I found OpenEmu in 2014; and, I must say it's the program I've been looking for when it comes to gaming console emulation.

      It unfortunately is incompatible with anything below macOS 10.11
      I don’t know if earlier versions work with earlier macOS systems, but I haven’t been able to find any information about it.
      But if you do have at least macOS 10.11, then go for it.

  • @The8BitGuy
    @The8BitGuy  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Sort of. You can run MorphOS on a G4 mac mini. I started making a video about it at one point, but couldn't just find enough cool things to show about it.

    Wow, just came across this. Would love to see more. I've been interested in emulation for a long time. Too bad more people aren't. You have a great way of explanating things.

  • @The8BitGuy
    @The8BitGuy  11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That's only partially true. Apple has always made the old OSs available for download. They have not made the ROM images available, though. In my case it is moot since I own the equipment. However, I doubt anyone is likely to get in trouble for copying 30 year old rom images.

    Um... installing 9.2.2 can be tricky. there are some guides online for that, somewhere. Haven't personally tried any playstation or gamecube games. I doubt the PPC can handle that.

      All of the emulators are installed as cores for the main application, making it quite compact. I played Donkey Kong Country on this and it's really good.

    I like this video a lot. I think this is one of the better videos you've done, in fact. This one and the one about fixing the LCD monitor. I've been using emulators for years now. Back in the early 2000's, I almost bought an Apple Wallstreet for 900 dollars, but ended up getting a Powerbook 1400 for a lot less. I also emulated OS 8 with Basilisk II on my Pentium system. Some professors had old Mac programs for data they swore by and I used them on Basilisk. Basilisk and VMac Mini emulators are nice 68k things for the ancient Apple machines.
    I happen to have copies of most of the emulators you mentioned plus MESS and MAME. Love the Stella the best. "STELLA!!! Can''t ya hear me YELLA???....OH STELLLAAAA!!!"
    (Old Pitfall II still has a place in my favorite video games of all time. I think it's my favorite for Atari 2600. It was also a cartridge for C64.)

I wanna program on c64 bur i dont know where to Get one, but luckily to me im going to a place callef teknisk museum its norwegian and means technic museum, its a place They have alot of old tech and im sooo interested in old computers. The best is you Can try the old stuff They Got there for free, i cant Wait :). My dream is to work on Google as either tech support or If i am lucky programmer. Im actually studying computers now, because its my life dream to become a programmer, thats why i watch your videos 8 bit guy, because i learn meanwhile it's fun, interesting and motivating at the same time! I love your videos and if i will Get my job at google, daym i'll do whatever i Can to say thanks. I am not so good at computers but im better than my teachers, lol. Good Idea! The old computers took a lot of programming to have them do anything ,even add 1+1 lol .We had a Commodore Vic 20 growing up and It had a book a mile thick teaching you how to program it. By the way, don't think that being able to take apart and put together a computer isn't important. It's very important too. With skills like that and programming you will go far if you stick to it . It seems like you have a good head on your shoulders so go for it! You will be a success in no time! I have friends looking into where you can find places to get one that live near Norway. If they have any luck I will let you know..Good luck from me also :) It is nice to see someone young interested in something other than cellphones.

      I am not sure where you got that download from but you should always use the developers original site for these:
      vice-emu.sourceforge.net/index.html#download
      This should work straight out of the box and if it does not here is the doc:
      vice-emu.sourceforge.net/vice_toc.html
      But if you got VICE in a .rar file, chances are you got a modified non original version and who knows what malware it might contain...

    I don't know why but I love retro games. I would love if you would make channel dedicated to retro games. I even notice interest of young people (younger than me) in old games to see how they work, how to create one, and of course play them. And I even would like to suggest name for such channel: Back in Time for Games. And I imagine it to look similar somewhat around logo of Space Quest in full color game and Back to Future movie series. Anyways, I gave you my two quarters. :-)

    Ralph Baer is credited as the father of video games. He created the Odyssey platform in the 1960's. Philips-Magnavox bought and manufactured the Odyssey systems in the mid 1970's that was a home system and not an arcade machine. Atari started just a few years later and also Commodore's 64. My grandparents had an Odyssey from the late 1970's. It was an interesting system to a kid in the mid 1980's. They had a jungle game like Pitfall which (Pitfall) itself had been inspired by Spielberg's "Raiders of the lost Ark", I think.
    Anyways, I've never seen any emulators of Odyssey systems. I guess they were rare birds. My grandparents had Ping Pong, Tank, BlackJack, Bowling, Race Car game, and few others. Tank lives again on some WII game where you move around and line up shoot. It is much like the old Odyssey 4000.

    • @owltoe0164

    For emulation, I recommend RetroArch because it can emulate a lot of different systems by using individual emulators within the program itself. This way, if you don't like one "core" as it is called in the program, then you can switch to another one. It also has a lot of compatibility with a variety of devices, so much so that it can even run in JavaScript, so you can put it on a website.

    I think you should give the retro gaming channel another chance. Retro gaming is extremely popular right now.

    Would you consider using a Powermac G5 as a File Server if you found one for cheap?

    I use RetroPie for the Raspberry pi 3 model B. It hooks up to the t.v. through HDMI and is easy to install. I use an Xbox 360 controller to play my games, but any usb controller will work. Also it has a composite port for video and audio incase you want to hook it up to an old Box t.v.

    So did macs never get a. UltraHLE equivalent or the other early emulators that didn't run a lot of games, but the ones they did were quite fast? There was no lag playing Mario Kart 64 on my 733Mhz Pentium 3. And I'm told there you could play SM64 on like a Pentium 2 and 300Mhz, if not lower.

    I'm very recommending for DOS emulation using the "Boxer" app on Macs. It is the Dosbox shell program which makes installation even easier into like real wooden shelf, don't need to use code, it have graphics rendering and even the Roland emulator presence like you have a real one. It is FREE and best.

    Hi, Great video's. After watching them I also installed a lot of emulators and got the same controller you show in video. But how do you get the controller to work?? It says plug and play on the box but it is far from it.

    What is the name of the first game you can see at the beginning of the video with the flying carpet. I played it myself as a kid, and forgot it completly until I saw it now on this vid. Childhood memories. :D
