    My n64 has a shitty connection on the Player One controller slot. Can't even boot smash bros half the time. This should help! Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the video. I cleaned the ports with alcohol without opening the case since i dont have the security bit and Im still getting loose connection on all controller ports. Any idea?

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Double check that your controller is definitely not the problem by testing it in another n64 if possible. Other than that it’s going to be some issue on the motherboard.

  • @andrewballinger452

    Maybe you know what the problem is... N64 joystick reads downpull if pulled slow. When fast it moves the curser up.
    4 original controllers and 3 new are doing this. Any ideas on correcting this. Did the lrstart recalibrate, problem still persists.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be a problem with the n64 motherboard in regard to the controller ports. Could be bad caps, or chips causing it. I doubt it would be as simple as a booger stuck in the port causing communication problems.
      If I had to fix it I’d first scrub the ports clean just in case, then pull out the board and check the solder points (like in the video). After that I’d use my ESR meter and check capacitors. If all those are deemed good then it’s now going to be a chip of some sort that’s faulty. You’ll need an Oscilloscope and know how to use it to be able to identify the bad chip.
      Those are my thoughts.

    Thanks for the video I did everything you did, but none of my controller port contacts looked bad. They looked really good actually. I’m getting the error most of the time. Any tips?

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I should say bad solder joints aren't always easy to see.
      If your controllers are verified working then I would use a toothbrush/ contact cleaner (or 91% isopropyl) and scrub the port contacts (where you plug in). The fact that it works sometimes tells me that it could be dirty ports. If problem persists I'd touch up the solder joints anyway. If that don't work then it could be some bad caps or a controller chip might be going out. Good luck!

    Can someone please let me know how do I fix the game quake when it says looking for a controller pack and it says try again every time I try to get it to save

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re controller pack “memory card” is either faulty or the connector on the back of your controller (for the controller pack) is too dirty to read the controller pack.
      Or you are not using a controller pack which means no saves for you.

    Does port one always break like that? I bought an N64 on ebay and it came with a broken port one and a non working reset button. Port one is just cosmetic damage but I've seen lot's of youtube videos where N64s have the same broken port. My reset button wasn't stuck so I had to take it apart. Now it works if I push it a couple of times.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me I'd say 1 in 30 will have cosmetic damage on that controller port. Congrats on getting the reset button working better!

      Retro Fix
      If you can answer,
      The controller port works but sometimes when im playing a game like super smash bros. the hand starts to go down or right. It usually stops if I disconnect the control and reconnect it

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you turn the system on and the stick isn't centered it can cause that. The fact you unplug then plug in and it works, makes me think that's the issue. Hold the stick to the right and turn on the system, you'll see that you will always move to the right. So I don't think it's the system. If you want You can spay contact cleaner in the controller plug then jam it in and out of the port (well, not jam, you know what I mean) and that will help dislodge any debris that might be in there.

    • @ThatOldSchoolMagic
      @ThatOldSchoolMagic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i never knew about the holding the stick towards a direction when starting a game thing. that explains why one of the gamepads was acting up the other night when i had a friend over for goldeneye although that was the first time that happened.
      i basically cleaned the ports with a tooth brush like you did in the video and it worked wonders, it no longer moves slightly to the right anymore after a while of use.
      now my only other question is: is it possible to clean the gamecube controller ports with a Qtip and alcohol? or will it ruin something inside? also thanks for the help.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just make sure you don't leave any qtip fuzz in there. Should be fine.

    How do ya deal with stripped screws?

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so far I have been able to get them out by applying a lot of downward pressure on the screw and slowly apply turning force, All the while still administering lots of downward force upon the screw. The moment the screw begins to turn is yus! I’ve also been able to dig in a flat head bit into a stripped Phillips and get the screw out.
      Also I believe there are tool kits to deal with that problem.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the contacts are clean on both controller plug and controller port then I'd say you got a cracked solder joint. If you're implying that the controller works with other games then I'm stumped. I would assume you are using an expansion pak instead of the jumper pak. Expansion pak is needed to play that game, has a red top.

  • @MrRainsonparade
    @MrRainsonparade 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tried this. Now my system won't display video or emit audio. So I have no clue really if the controller works now. It's fucked.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 4 or 5 N64's that are dead as a door nail. I would try a different jumper pak before you call it toast.

    I think I just killed my N64... Video isn't showing up anymore...

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here’s some possibilities of what “might” be going on. Pin connector is bad (replace it), pin connector is dirty (pull off of motherboard and clean under it as well), motherboard component fried due to whatever you were doing - this could be a capacitor involved with video display or the chip involved with video. There could be something boogering up the video port and or cable. The yellow part of the a/v cable might not be plugged in the tv all the way or is defective.
      Idk if this is helpful but I feel obliged to give you my 2 cents. I wish you good luck!
