I actually took apart my controller pack and measured the voltage on the battery to see if it was still good Surprisingly it still had 3.2 V coming out of it since 11/1999

How do you access the memory that is inside the expansion pack or the jumper pack? I always wondered if there was any way to access the storage in those packs. Is there any way to access the save files on these packs? Thanks.
Unfortunately no, I have never seen anything to access any space. The Jumper Pak is just a pass-through that acts to keep the RAMBUS active, whereas the Expansion Pak adds RAM for processing power (graphical upgrades etc). Many games keep the saves on the cartridges so if you don't have a Controller Pak you may be good for a while 😊

@@SvennyMcG Indeed thanks again I actually try this and was able to delete some save data off my N64.
I don't know if this is true but I think somebody made a video where you had to transfer data from your N64 to another N64 to get rid of some of your saved data that seems like alot of work but I found this alot easier.
I haven't encountered that one but that does sound like a lot more of a process. Glad this worked out!

Does this work for Mario Party and Mario Party 3? Because I bought a N64 for those games and later bought a Controller Memory PAK because my Mario Party 3 cartridge malfunctioned every once in a while and i bought another cartridge that I thought would work better and tried to transfer my data off of my first Mario Party 3 cartridge (I had a lot of things unlocked) and I used your method and that Save Data transfer did not work, so now I’ll have to start all over again in Mario Party 3.
Most 1st party games from Nintendo save directly to the cartridge and not a Controller Pak or memory card so unfortunately you likely can't transfer any data between them

I got a question, how do you transfer saves from a controller pak to a new controller pak? Is there a way to do it maybe by hooking up two controllers with paks in them to the N64?
Hi! Nintendo didn't give an option directly; you have a few options though.
You can start a game, open a save, swap memory cards (when loaded) then save on the new card.
There's also an option with a Game Shark.

Trying to erase memory on Nintendo 64 when I go to do it it says please remove rumble packs I do not have one in any tips will not let me save either
I am trying to back up saves from n64 card to my pc to use in an emulator been googling for a while. Found one thing that seemed to do it. But was out of stock
Interesting, I haven't tried but I wonder if some of the newer N64 controllers with USB connections would simplify the process 🤔
@@SvennyMcG I found something called the hyperkin admiral. It is a wireless controller but welcomes with this other thing you can use to save your memory pak saves to an sd... Seems to be the the answer. I ordered it hopefully it will do the trick. :)

@@SvennyMcG I found out about it on a channel called archades games. Just type in.. how to back up your controller pak saves with the admiral. It should come up, he shows how to do it. I hope you don't mind me posting the other channel name just telling where I found out about it. Will let you know if the thing works out for me.
Hey, I have Spiderman for N64. I have the jumper pack in my system, and a memory card in the controller, but the game isn't allowing me to save.
It's saying expansion pack not registered, but I put my mario kart 64 in and the memory card is working just fine.
What can I do to save the progress in the the game? My little guy gets bummed every time he has to start over lol.
I'm testing the game now to see myself - the first prompt I got was the Expansion Pak (which replaces the Jumper Pak). It's for resolutions/graphics etc but not game saves, so not having it should be okay.
The Controller Pak plugged into the controller is where your saves go - did you check "Controller Pak" in the main menu? That will test it to ensure it's connected without issue
After the first scenario (web swinging across rooftops, then entered the bank) I got a prompt asking to save. I was able to name the save file and save to the Controller Pak.
So saves are kind of level-based, it seems, not something you can pause and save on the go. Hope that helps!
@@SvennyMcG I'm thinking I may have to buy the Expansion Pak! The Memory Card (Controller Pak) seems to be working just fine, so I think that may be my issue. Because he's gotten super far into the game & it has said "cannot save no Expansion Pak" Thank you so much for helping!

Go to Cheats at the main menu and use code LVLSKIPPER to skip levels - it won't keep his progress but at least he won't have to start at the beginning each time 😊
@@SvennyMcG At least that's what I'm thinking is holding us up, I could try and get another Controller Pak (Memory Card) (The one I have works fine with Mario Kard 64 which is weird), along with the Expansion Pak, you are right that it shouldn't affect it if I don't have the Expansion Pax, but that's what it is saying oddly.
My memory card on my N64 says it’s broken and it will not save my games I ordered some tools to take it apart and to replace the battery do you think it’s the battery problem And it will not let me save on quake how do I fix that And mine is not jumping right into the menu
Sorry to hear! It could be a battery issue, I'd try to clean the contacts on the memory card as well, maybe the pins aren't contacting correctly 🤔
@@SvennyMcG I clean the connection so I’m just gonna wait until Saturday to get my screwdrivers in the mail in the mail system is been crazy lately I had a package supposed to come last Friday it was supposed to come and It didn’t come Monday and It did not come Monday it says pending for a different package it was coming with FedEx for the other package I had

I randomly found out that this menu can also be accessed at the games press start menu. By pressing Z + start button it made the menu pop up

Some have the option to save, say after a race or mission, some autosave, and other you can hit start to pause then select save in the menu. Is there a particular game your son is playing?
@@SvennyMcG yes he is playing castlevania. And he gets upset because he has to start over and over again
Okay, I read online that Castlevania does indeed require a Controller Pak / Memory Card to save. In addition, he needs to collect white crystals in the game; then, in the game press C-Right when standing over the white crystal.

Ocarina of Time saves to the cartridge- it has a battery-powered save built-in 👍

Oh no! Well to be sure, when you save, quit and restart you will always start back at areas like the tree house or a dungeon etc. You won't just pick up in Hyrule Field if that's where you saved, for example
@@SvennyMcG i was playing for 3 hours straight when i first got it and i remember saving like a lot through out the game. i restarted it and checked if it saved and there wasn’t even any save files there. i don’t know what it could be because every other game works fine just this one even with a new battery

How do you save your n64 game? I did not quite understand sorry
Each game is different. Try hitting Start and seeing if saving is an option there.
Some games use batter save on the cartridge and some use the Controller Pak memory card to save.
It's not working for me. I am using a 3rd party memory pak though. (The Performance Memory Card)
Weird, it should, but I don't think all cartridges do it. Which cartridge did you use with the Performance Memory Card?
@@SvennyMcG tried with Ocarina of Time. Didn’t work. Tried it with Super mario 64 but the n64 didn’t even display anything. Might try it with my dk64 next
I showed first party Nintendo Controller Pak as well as 3rd party memory cards in the video, using both a first party game like Mario Kart 64 and a third party title like Superman 64, not sure why it's not working for you 🤔 Is it reading your memory card otherwise, like detecting it for saving in game even if you can't get the menu to populate?
@@SvennyMcG I also am using an OEM controller. 3rd Party Memory card. Authentic cartridges. And in-game, the saves work perfect. Never had an issue. Just tested with an authentic DK64 and a repro Conkers cartridge and neither worked :(. It’s just holding down the start button and turning on the console right?

These days try your local retro gaming store, eBay or Amazon. Nintendo's version is called the Controller Pak, but there are 3rd party options. I have videos on the Controller Pak and other brands on my channel, check them out!

Not *all* games, some can save to the cartridge with battery saves but others use the Controller Pak

Conkers saves to its own cartridge and does not require the Controller Pak
Fifa uses it (as shown in the video).
Mario Kart saves progress to its own cartridge but ghost data needs to save to the Controller Pak.
Superman 64 requires the Controller Pak to save.
It varies. I don't have a definitive list and am trying to find a reliable one online.

Can you save to the Controller Pak in game? Maybe take it out and set it in the controller again and, of course, make sure you're holding Start when booting the console
