So, here's a rundown of my day. It's a public holiday here in Australia and I woke up at 4am to go to the ANZAC Day dawn service. I saw you had just put this video up and I put it on while I was getting ready. It put me in a really good mood. I came back from the dawn service a few hours later and put more of your videos on while I was doing chores. Except I didn't do the chores at all. I've been sitting on my butt watching your videos for the last 6 hours. You're recording quality is so solid. I've been studying audio engineering for the last few years, but I used to play acoustic guitar between 18-25, took a break for 18 years and am now trying to learn all over again on my first electric at age 44. Of course I've been trying to find TH-camrs to learn from. Most aim at people who are brand new to guitar (or brand new to music in general), or they are so pro that they aim their lessons over my head or ability. You, though, have been my favourite channel for 6 months. So today, I went back and just devoured your past videos. As a creator, I really appreciate how you present your videos and yourself. But appreciation should be shared, so I wrote this to let you know. Just keep being you man. You're nailing this.

I recorded the guitar solo in a demo with a band I had in the 90s (on a 4-Track Tascam 464!) with one of these mini Marshalls practice amps MS-2. I turned everything on "10", put a Shure SM58 45 degrees in front of the speaker and the sound in the mix was mind blowing.
Just bought one of these. The capture feature is awesome! Being able to capture an expensive rig and sound close to it is actually great!
I may be wrong but the big Tone X Pedal had a recent update that added a tuner to it as well. Loving these pedals. Great job!

I mean genuinely modeling is the the future of playing. No need for a super heavy amp, you can have a super high quality amplifier at the base of your feet. Makes traveling so unbelievably easy and allows you to provide a more consistent performance on a nightly basis.
I agree! I run everything through Neural DSP Plugins, so I don't even need a floor modeler. Just a Focusrite. I love the sounds I get out of those modelers, and while real amps are still really cool and worth preserving, to the actual player it might not be totally worth it anymore!

Modeling has come a long way! I've been gigging / playing for many years, and the advancements in amp modeling is amazing! That, in itself, makes my back feel so much better,lol! No more lugging heavy amps! (Though, I still bring my 60 watt combo tube amp every so orften)
I’ve been impressed with modeling technology in the past few years, being able to get decent tones and not having to worry about noise complaints. However, I live in a small city in the middle of nowhere, I can turn up amps above bedroom level in my house. I like the option of digital for people in situations where they can’t use a 5 watt tube amp, but for me playing into a medium/large amp just feels so much more fun and motivating to play more.

I thought the same thing until I turned off the cab on my kemper and plugged it into the power amp of my real tube amp.
I've had so many different tube amps, modeling and profiling amps. The models and profiling are more consistent. I will say my Ceriatone JM50 is the only tube amp I can't get rid of. Nothing I've owned sounds this good. Recording, the Modeling and Profilers can't be beat. I have had the ToneX pedal since day 1 and it's always on my board. If I'm recording or playing through a power amp I'll have an amp model turned on if I'm playing through a tube amp I'll have some sort of profiled overdrive pedal on or available.

I'm so glad Tonex went this direction...now the others are gonna have to follow suit. I can only imagine a small pedal-sized quad cortex with the capability of loading amp models on the fly without a laptop. Smaller and cheaper than the kemper player

Great video and your commentary is spot on. I have and like a ToneX. I used it in the loop of my HX Stomp. Although, at this point, I am actually planning on selling it. I found that the infinite possibilities brought out the worst in me - a fell down into a black hole of searching for the next amp capture that I would try. I went back to using the amps in my HX Stomp, and the ToneX sat on the shelf for a few months until my decision to sell was clear. And then the ToneX One was announced. Of course size and price make this an attractive option. But for me, and some may think this is odd, it's limitations align better with the way I have been operating over the last few months. Simplify, and stop hunting for more/better sounds. I like that I can only switch between 2 sounds (actually its 3 if you read the fine print in the manual). I like that it only holds 20 captures (even 10 would have been fine). I think this will help me show some discipline. My plan is to pick a couple of sounds (one cleanish, and one crunchy), and try to not keep searching for the next great capture. I may even unsubscribe from the sites I had been buying captures from. Its a classic example of too many options. After all, when I was using tube amps exclusively, I only ever had one amp at a jam/rehearsal/gig. So why do I need so many amps with me when playing in the digital amp world? My ToneX One won't get here until mid/late May according to Sweetwater. So, we'll see....
I've been playing Church situations for 6 and a half years, almost always using a DI Box straight in with my pedal board. I have DR Z MAZ 18. I'm still considering selling it , I mean I don't need it as much as I would need a Tone X or Dream 65 . Most of anything sounds good if you know how to make it sound good , however, there are some that are more for recording than for live situations. I do want a Tone X. Thanks for the reminder.
It’s fascinating to see how much multi-fx/amp modeler units have advanced. It’s almost dizzying to think of all the options one has today when it comes to tonal capabilities!
TONEX ONE is nice! Guitar processors can make a big difference in sound depending on the CAB IR you use.
actually there are many IR products on the market, but I think DYNAX IR has the best sound. As stated in their product description, DYNAX IR is really fast. When using IRs, the pick attack is sometimes delayed, and it is difficult to add picking nuances, but their IR prevents all of that. It's revolutionary!
We all love music gear and instruments, that’s for sure. And depending on our location, situation or simply a matter of miles in your musical journey, we have different requirements and situations as unique as we are. Like location our location, neighbors, studio use, live use, band practice, spontaneous jam. They key thing is that nowadays we have OPTIONS. I started playing in 1993. We only had old school options, big amps, pedals, mics, mixer, PA. A setup I did so many times. Honestly all digital technology is so advanced now that I ASSURE you, I ve never had a better sound compared to any analog gear Ive used professionally over the years. So just enjoy guys! Its a good moment to be a musician!
For gigging musicians this is a handy space saver. Lots of uses sounds great and the tuner is a nice bonus.
I haven' jumped into the Tonex world yet. I have used an HX Stomp with a few other pedals for about 5 years and been very happy with it in a gigging environment. But what I am hearing tone-wise the ToneX captures sound incredible! What the heck does it really like sound-wise.
3 inches is all you need if you know what you’re doing.
I just got a temple audio pedalboard (check them out at Sweetwater). I'm literally assembling it right now. I found out that it has an amp modeler module (srsly it has modules). When my 15 year old line 6/Bogner spider valve finally kicks the bucket it's something I'd consider.

Ikm Tonex, Ampero Mini, Boss Katana Go amoung many others all sound great.
Virtual instruments and effects have been around for many years, but for someone like me who records at home on a humble Macbook Air m1, these little pedals are a life savour. Saving DSP from your computers CPU is a god send and with the ability to record pristine audio as they double as 24bit audio interfaces is just the cherry on top.
As far as the Tonex One goes, all that switching seems complecated, yet for someone recording using the software , it really doesn't matter. Would be nice if they added delay and modulation effects though.
That really would of killed alot of the competition.
I definitely did not have any of this 25 years ago and I still don't. I feel like if I go this route, I might as well just buy a FR cab (probably the fender one) and buy the ToneX and maybe the Joyo American Sounds pedal or the UA Lion. Otherwise, I need to buy a new computer, monitors, an interface. Just an all-around hassle compared to plugging into an amp. The one upside is if you want to record, and you can try lots of flavors of different amps and tones. And volume control of course. Do people use the old ToneX with regular old tube amps or solid state amps?
Just plug it into your effects return loop and use the tonex as your preamp and then your actual amp as a power amp. And when you’re practicing with headphones, you use the tonex. That’s what I do with my kemper. It’s simple and works perfectly. Just make sure you turn the cab sim off on the tonex.
@@TheJasonMaxwell That is definitely an option. Do you use the 4-cable method or just go straight into the return? I'm not even really sure what that method does, maybe puts the dirt in front of the amp? Probably not necessary with a Kemper. I only know about the method from the UA amp pedals.
My PodGo serves me very well, sounds sick as a pedal board with my Marshall or through my DAW and KRK 8 gen4 monitors using amp models. So its perfect for studio or live work.
Now I do have a Freedman BE-OD and an EHX Soul Food fallowed by a MXR M135 Smart Gate running through the PodGo’s FX loop, just because I wanted to offload my Distortion/OD to open up more fx, and tonal options on the Pod.
However I can say that the Freedman BE-OD is not a OD its an amp in a box that I mainly use with the Marshall to go from normal Marshall sound to Hotrod modded Marshall and it really is surprising how tube like the BE-OD is and can sound great for some classic Rock, Hard rock and metal, my EHX soul food can be used as a transparent boost for clean tone or to boost the Freedman or to get the classic rock, blues, neo-soul and RNB sounds the Freedman just has too much balls to clean up for.
But I say all of this to say, that my pedals I use to offload, combine or clean up my OD/Distortion are unnecessary and are a specific use case type of thing that was what I needed, and for a long time all I used was my PodGo and truly is a prime example of how crazy good modeling is, and to this day I could ditch my other 3 pedals and still sound great playing or performing.

The only people who still believe in the superiority of big-ass amps are gear snobs who probably still hold onto the belief that tone wood is a thing and that locking tuners are more important for tuning stability than the nut, and actual amp manufacturers and their paid internet shills.

Thanks for the awesome overview. The power available in these little units is astonishing. This is a great review and great reflection. With little units like this, the interface tends to become annoying to me. It takes quite a bit of work to tweak and get it set to my tastes and preferences. With something like this, requiring a computer is annoying, but I get why it’s needed for such a minimalistic approach. I would assume with a few weeks of tinkering I could get it to the point where it’s set and I can forget it. I’d love to hear what other people think as they use these over time.

I don’t see big guitar players changing the amp config mid performance, like John Mayer for instance use the two rock with exact the same configuration for all the songs he uses it, then he change the amp no the config on the amp. So I guess we are in this constant sound chasing that requires a lot nobs, but once you get a sound you like and go out and play, you don’t need to be changing amp stuff mid performance. I think the problem is people want to sound more like their heroes than create a new or personal sound

Is there a lot of background noise when using the pedal alone with headphones?
The larger version is unfortunately very loud with humming and noise. Just like many similar products that do not have their own grounding like the kemper player. I am still looking for a quiet product for playing only with headphones 😉

Does the modeler sound exactly like the tube amp that’s sitting in the room? No. Is it good enough to warrant never dealing with an amp? Absolutely.

Newsflash!!! Computer chips have been shrinking since they were invented. Every year they pack more in less space. What a surprise that a tiny pedal sounds good. What is stupid is it is too small to have a screen and you have to use color codes to navigate.
Things can get too small to be useful.

I’ve tried early modeling amps and software, but it’s too complex for my taste. Currently I’d like a little bit of a variety of tones so I can cover my favorite songs. I’d like a simple versatile pedal to put in front of an amp or straight to headphones, that will give me options, without being complicated. What do you suggest? There are a bunch out there and i don’t know where to start.
What about on stage at a real gig? Does it sound "and feel" as good as my tube amp?
It honestly does. I play live with mine twice a week and never think for a moment about the fact that I’m not playing through real amps.
A year ago I considered the original, doing the deep dive research. I already had the UAB Ruby and Tech 21 RKv2 Flyrig (whcich had a tuner and XLR out). While I’ll probably get one (or two), I wonder if there will be a version with XLR out as well, eliminating another box on my ampless board?
Two words Mike...Options Paralysis. Things like the Tone X, HX Stop, Helix have TOO much tweak-ability. This can take you down a hole where even getting a DECENT tone is like digging for gold. I have to say though with things like the Boss IR2 and now the Tonex 1, I think these companies are waking up to the fact that MAYBE some of us just want a great sound with little stress.
I do think MAYBE Tone X jumped a level. To go from big and hyper tweak to Mini and "You figure it out" seems kind of excessive. Where is that in between pedal that MAYBE lets you see what you're doing without plugging into a PC or using a smart phone?!? Maybe a Boss or Walrus or JHS sized enclosure with a screen on it? Even if it just shows what AMP or what PEDAL you're using. I mean if Vox could put a stupid frequency screen on a pedal that size.....
The Tonex1 will be my next purchase! 🔥💯

Larger PA sound systems of Horns (not paper speakers) don't sound correct When you are close to them. . .Marshal double stacks are a Medium sized Amp system, you need to be about 80 feet away for it to "sound right".. . .small sound systems like a "Fender Twin Reverb" sound good when they are 10 feet away.

I say this with kindness. Your content is great, but the constant hand motions are distracting.
No modeler will ever properly mimic the sound of a miked cab. Sound traveling through the air into a microphone is just too intimate to perfectly replicate. It may be a good alternative, but will always be inferior.

@@meloche1syndromeNot really. I liked Mike because I felt he was a good balance between being a youtuber and product demo guy. Now he spends close to half the video just talking. He's starting to just come off like Rhett Shull or Mary Spender, who are more about just miming guitar culture points and only reviewing vintage gear or gear payed to review. It makes sense because that is what appeals to most people, but I hope Mike finds his balance again or I'll eventually unsub 😢😢😢. Like you said it may not be the content for this person, but what some of us originally came to Mike for has clearly changed.
