I'm actually going to use the workout program of "Mass Made Simple." Those barbell complexes are a killer!

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach - I actually did the programs years ago when I was in better shape. I'll have to modify & ease into it for at least a month before jumping in!

Hi Dan. High rep squats? Are we talking in the 20 rep range? Or less? Or more? Pavel swears by deadlifts over squats for hypertrophy, e.g in the Russian Bear programme.

One of our guys is doing the Bear now. My book, Mass Made Simple, outlines my vision of high rep squats.

Just curious, not complaining: how far out are viewer questions for Dan? I sent one in about 3 months ago... Love your work, regardless!

What was the question? Sometimes, we get a lot of really "close" questions and lump them into a single answer.

@@DanJohnStrengthCoach It was about starting Strongman training with a local club in my 40s and worrying about overdoing it. I got a response almost immediately from Brian.
      Not a big deal.

Any advice for a older 57 yrs old , heavier guy who is looking to improve running time ? I've been losing weight lost about 45 lbs since march . Any advice would be appreciated . Thanks in advance

If you are going to lift to help, use this: danjohnuniversity.com/bookstore I would also take running UP hills very seriously and adding some longer walks and rucks. After a certain age, running improves by keeping the running to an appropriate minimum and working the body with a lot of other tools. When former runners add biking or lifting, they often tell me it helped them more than more running.

How would one attack fat first? I’m 6’4” 320 but I always get told I “carry it well”. But man I feel it and it’s unbearable. Should I just do flows and high intensity stuff with a calorie restriction?

Here it is: protein 1.5-2.0 x Kg (200/2.2) of body weight you want to get to.
    Step 1: ESFL
Step 2: hypertrophy workout increase cals by 10-20%, do 10-20 set per body part or movement patterns try to take your set to about 2 reps left in the tank, close to failure.
    There you go.

I’m pretty sure I got this from Lyle McDondald, he said when training to drop body fat you can’t do mass type training you aren’t taking in the calories for that type of training. When dropping body fat you need to scale back your training but maintain a level of intensity (in this case making sure the weight is heavy) so the body needs to hold on to muscle. In my opinion that’s is why ESFL work, and for most people probably the best exercise program as part of a fat loss program. But we both know fat loss happens in the kitchen.

Hi Dan - the first question reminded me of a technique used by the late Glenn Pendlay where he added workouts to his trainees that were concentric only - lighter on the nervous system and easier to add for already hard working lifters. Here's a writeup from him I saved from a few years ago if you're curious - bastardolifters.blogspot.com/2010/03/mass-gain-theory-by-glenn-pendlay.html
    cheers!
