Krak des Chevalier was rebuilt in the mid-12th century on top of a Kurdish settlement. Originally called “Crac de l'Ospital” in old French by its Frankish (Crusader) inhabitants... One thing about the castle you’ll notice is that location is everything, as it is placed on top of a very defensible spur of land. Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries the castle was ruled by the Knights Hospitaller inside of a crusader state called the County of Tripoli. The plot of land and given to Raymond II Count of Tripoli who in turn gave it to the Hospitallers. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was the largest of the crusader states which was just south of the castle. The castle was sieged by the Ayyubid Muslim Army several times in 1188 after the fall of the Crusader Kingdom, but never conquered. It only conquered by the Mameluke Sultanate in 1271, nearly 90 years after it was first sieged by a Saladin. The castle fell In 1271 two decades before the fall of the city of Acre in 1291... effectively ending the Crusades to the Holy Land. Edit: Like so others can see.
The present Krak castle is built by the Crusaders, as everyone knows. Before that, there was a much smaller fortification, built by the emir of Aleppo.
It's nice to see you know the world about my country with this passion and love Especially since everyone has a negative image in his mind about Syria after tarnishing its image 🇸🇾❤️
I have been to Syria twice, in the late 90's. Syrian people were incredibly friendly and hospitable, I wish them the best in reconstructing their country. Both Aleppo and Damascus were amazing.
The expression on your face at the end shows how much Syria has amazed you! it looks like a beautiful country. I pray that it is restored and at peace again, what an amazing country, culture and history. Hope to visit sometime in the future as well.
Hi Drew. Thanks for this lovely video but you need to brush up on your history and provide some info and FACTS to make it more interesting in my opinion. This fortress was built by the European Latin Crusaders which is why the interior reminded you of a cathedral (it also had a chapel that was in operation for more than a century after it was built) . It Is located in the beautiful 'Valley of the Christians' in Western Home Province. The valley has a majority Christian Population who live in more than a dozen picturesque villages and small towns. I visited all of them. My favorites are Kafra (amazing views), Marmarita (beautiful and dynamic town especially in summer with a couple of amazing restaurants and cafes where you will find much better food than anything you ate in Damascus because the food in the valley of the Christians is grown locally usually without hormones or pesticides and the zone is pollution free. The entire area is a pasture for goats, sheep etc so if you liked kibbeh in Damascus you will love it even more here) and Mzaynah which is a small village with a 1,500 year old stone Church and a lovely fresh water lake that is cool in winter. The Christian population of the valley is currently estimated at 60,000 and at least 95% belong to the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox Church. Some of the oldest Byzantine Churches in Syria are found dotted across the valley which is also considered a Holy Land because of the many Saints and Miracles that happened in and around them. There is also one mid sized Muslim town which is called 'Al Husn' which is the Arabic name for the fortress you visited. Around 10,000 people live in this town which is a crowded, almost urban environment as the population are farmers so the land around is kept for farming whilst the town is strictly for living purposes.
Been there once in my early teens. The castle is charming and its interior just takes you back in time. There's also a similar big castle called the Castle of Saladin ita also a great and huge ancient castle.
So happy you came by the Crac des Chevaliers! I’m personally French from Syrian origins and my grandparents live next to this castle, their house is probably in the village you see from castle’s view, I remember seeing the Crac des Chevaliers from their balcony, anyway…. I’m really glad an American came to Syria and genuinely enjoyed the culture and the history and talked about something else than the war. Have a nice day !
Syria was exactly how I thought it would be and I'm glad Drew you showed a lot of Americans and others, what you do might be worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize
