Pound for pound, Amanos have to be the most efficient algae eaters out there! Check out what they did in just 24 hours to clean up some algae infested driftwood.

Every ecosystem has something that does a little bit of everything to make it balance.
This is another incredible example of this.
And now I know what to do for my two smaller tanks.
Question; how many of these little treasures can I put in. Guppy tank ( 10 g.) that has 5 guppys in it?
Have a wonderful evening with all your beautiful tanks.

I have a freshwater tank set up at home while I’m at college that I come home to maintain on the weekends. It’s set up on timers and auto feeders, but over time my thermometer (magnetic) built up a ton of algae, so I unclipped it and lie face up on the gravel. The following weekend, it was completely clean like brand new.

I remember when I first bought a handful of amanos and dropped them in a tank to handle brown and green algae. In a single night there wasn't a speck of algae in the tank! I've noticed that hair algae is on the bottom of their priority list of food to eat but nonetheless make a great cleanup crew.

If you move them into a different tank to medicate the original tank, will the amanos carry the disease into the other tank? Will they be carriers for life? How do you QT them before adding them with your fish? How do you prevent them from escaping tanks and going into HOB filters?

See, I’m having a minor hair algae problem (not SUPER bad yet, but will get there if I don’t get something to deal with it, and chemicals are my LAST resort), and I WOULD get Amano Shrimp, but the problem is that they don’t live that long, but they also can’t breed in freshwater to replenish their numbers. I also would rather not have to get Nerites or any other snail that would dig around in my gravel and uproot my micro swords.
Is there any other type of shrimp anyone would recommend to eat hair algae? Preferably something that can breed in freshwater.

a few weeks ago, we added about a half dozen amanos that we've had for about 6 months to a larger (40 breeder) tank..since then, they've been quite shy compared to when they were in a 15g fluval flex...today one of them molted and he was very intense blue, one or two of the others (that are larger females are slightly blue)
I've been reading this can either be stress or them feeding on certain algae, which they have been doing some of both. they act pretty normal, should we be concerned?
