The BEST ALGAE EATERS for your aquarium!

  • In this video we're looking at my favourite/most popular algae eating fish for your community aquarium.
Discard those ideas of keeping common plecos, sailfin plecos or Chinese algae eaters. This video goes through all the different types of algae grazing fish that are going to help keep your aquarium clean and algae free.
Let me know what species you use at home to help keep algae under control in your aquarium.
The species in the video are listed below to make finding them easier for you in the future.
    Bristlenose Catfish/pleco (ancistrus sp.)
    15cm (5.9")
Hard working medium sized suckermouth catfish brilliant at eating algae off of aquarium surfaces such as rocks, wood, plants and glass.
    Dwarf suckermouth catfish/Otocinclus (Otocinclus sp.)
Another hard working community fish great at cleaning your aquarium. Growing to only 5cm (1.96") these are perfect for a smaller aquarium, but remember always keep them in a group as they like company. Like the bristlenose Catfish they are great at eating algae off of aquarium surfaces such as rocks, wood, plants and glass.
    Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata)
One of the best shrimps for your aquarium famed for their hard work and non stop cleaning. Getting to around 5cm (1.96") they are brilliant for the smaller fish tanks. House them in a group to keep them happy, they will then help you with all those hard to reach places in the aquarium.
    Amano shrimp video.
    • Amano shrimp: EVERYTHI...
    Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilus oblongus)
These fish are fantastic at controlling hair algae, blanket week or black beard algae in the aquarium. Getting to around 15cm (5.9") they need to be housed in a suitable aquarium.
Kept best as a single or shoal of three or more.
    Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda)
The smaller of the two shrimp on this list getting to around 3cm (1.2") these are an awesome algae eater for nano aquariums. Kept as a group they will normally multiply and keep on top of uneaten food and unsightly algaes.
    Nerite snail (Nerite sp.)
A group of snail species very good at controlling algaes in your fish tank, especially good at eating stubborn green spot algae. Growing to around 4cm (1.57") multiple snails can be housed together to help keep your aquarium clean.
    Livebearers
Fish such as the Molly, Guppy, Platy and Swordtail are superb grazers for most community aquariums, sizes can vary but certain ones can reach 15cm (5.9") so choose wisely.

Well done, Matt. Yes, I'd love to see a video on swordtails. And/or platies. Very interested. You and MD Fish Tanks are my go-to people now. The amount of algae that platies can eat always surprises me. There was a piece of decor in my male betta's tank that was covered in hair algae. My platy tank had a bunch of babies, so I switched the piece to the platy tank and the next day, every bit of hair algae had disappeared. Adorable little eating machines.
Looking forward to the shrimp files. My husband loves cherry shrimp, and I've considered setting up a shrimp tank for him lol. Totally not as an excuse to play with a new tank. 😏

Loved the video, one suggestion for you, if you made a list of the talking points (Particular fish type. etc.) to help you remember what you are addressing. A script of sorts. You are a very entertaining fellow and I always get a good giggle when watching. Also, looking forward to the "Shrimp files" on the Cherries. Have a good one! 👍

They're great. I have a pair in a well-planted tank and they've yet to do any harm to stems, epiphytes etc

Mine do a great job of controlling algae, but I've also had a large male destroy some plants for the heck of it.

One of my favorite colorful algae eaters is the Longfin Rosey Barb! I’ve kept them in both my tanks and they absolutely decimate hair algae. Plus, they’re absolutely gorgeous with bright orange and green coloring.
*Also, look how big those rope fish have gotten behind you!!!

I agree, the only reason they didn't get included was their sometimes nippy attitude but they will definitely be in round two of this video.
      The ropes are now massive!!!

I am so g;ad that you mentioned Mollies and Platies and Guppies. Just had this happen at our local big chain pet store. No body helping a lady and her 10 year old son who both looked lost. I asked if they needed any advice. The son had a 35 gal (130 lit) neon tetra and glow fish tank. They wanted some more colorful fish and had "a little algae" (Normal for a tank that gets minor direct sun) so I said guppies and a bit less food. Mabey if tank load is good a few cory to clean bottom resting food. When the employee showed up they were talked into a common Pleco. No color and totally wrong for their tank. But that is what they walked out with because "Algae"
Woot more shrimp stuff to come!

Mollies may well be in a future tank for me! Well at least you can sleep well knowing you tried. Such a shame but we will educate one person at a time!!!
