Guys, literally it’s crazy but I had to take the opportunity while his membership is so low! Honestly, I couldn’t have even imagined getting the kind of work Gamer Image did for me! He’s very knowledgeable of the sims coding and in General we literally spent three hours and 37 minutes with each other on the phone not to mention he’s also connected via computer remotely.. honestly the whole thing was scary for me because let me be honest with you guys. I have a mods folder that consists of upwards of 80,000 package files 🫢🫢🫢🫢 lol thank you thank you (I try) but I would say I’m also pretty knowledgeable. He even said I know my sh*t but I got lost in the sauce lol and homeboy helped me out a lot. And an added bonus now I have a lifelong simmer friend! I also recommend purchasing his software, which is the software that initially allowed me to run my game Xoxo Tysm friend ❤

You have no idea how much heartache, suffering, and agony you have cured me of. This was the most comprehensive, to the point, and HELPFUL video I’ve watched. I finally got it transferred over properly
I’ve been trying to sort this out for like 3 days, the tutorials I’ve watched didn’t work and after watching your video I’ve realised how simple it really was. Thank you I’m so happy I can finally just play my game 😭😭😭
This is easily one of the best tutorials I've ever seen. Simple, slow, straight to the point and no obnoxious music playing over your voice. You saved my time, thank you sm!

You are a legend. ❤ My mods folder was just too chunky and had to move it to a new drive. Didn't expect it to be so simple! Thank you for taking the time and effort!
The number of videos I've watched to get this to work properly is ridiculous. Never thought I would come across a 5-minute video that put to shame all the other videos and tutorials I've come across! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I truly hope your channel gets more recognition. Recently watched your other video regarding changing the drive location and that was also very helpful! Sending you virtual hugs and many thanks!

I don't usually comment on videos but THANK YOU so much!!! This was the most simple, straight to the point and easy to understand tutorial I've ever watched! I made my own silly mistakes of up a step more than once and had to redownload my game 3 times haha but that was all down to me and not watching correctly. But, many thanks to you and your tutorials I have now moved my sims 4 game and all the mods etc with it to my external hard drive! I like to keep sims 3 and 4 installed on separate things as my sims 3 runs a lot slower when sims 4 + my mods is downloaded alongside it, so this is going to be an absolute LIFE SAVER!! Thanks again! :)
You are absolutely so so so welcome! I'm so glad this tutorial was cursive enough for you to easily move items where you needed them to go! Feel free to comment if I can help in any way! Have a beautiful day! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
i ran into an issue where i had thought i had done everything right and couldn't open the game. turns out i had only copied ts4 folder not the entire ea folder. after reinstalling and pulling this vid up again, i made sure i did everything exactly as you did and it worked. i wish good fortune upon you. thanks :)

This was a life saver for me! I have no idea why but my mods and saves were located in onedrive, so I moved the folder back to my computer by using this tutorial 🥰
This works for sims 3 as well. I was having a massively hard time getting my mods on my ssd due to one drive and this fixed the issue instantly. thank you so much!

@@deniya5774 There's a few things, but first if it doesn't end up loading the game at all and if you pull up the task manager and go to processes and you don't see a process that starts with TS4, then most likely the game terminated without warning. Typically, I would rename the mods folder, or pull all of the mods out to check if the game will load. if the game still keeps crashing, I would do a disk check on the hard drive. Y’all I gotta be one of those people, I gotta write this thesis because this mine saved my whole entire sims life last night. I had bought a pc back in 2020 soley for the sims 3 but my computer came with the traditional 118gb and me being a mods head that wasn’t cutting it so I bought an external hard drive with 500gb had someone install and forgot to ask them how to transfer my folder over so when they left I tried it myself and accidentally deleted my whole sims 3 mods folder I believe my whole sims 3 electronics folder and it was gone forever, I was distraught broken from playing the sims 3 let alone the sims ever again but I ended up downloading sims 4 again and have been only playing that for the last years but I ended up needing storage again last night and I was down to my last 1gb again and researching this video on TH-cam was nothing but a few clicks away and I followed the instructions frame by frame and transfering over actually worked so now I can download all the mods I want, thank you so much for everything

this was exactly the tutorial i needed to free up space on my drives, thank you !! quick question: if i add new mods to the mods folder in the new location, will it update that shared folder ?
If you don't have the MOVE HERE option you HAVE to PRESS shift then LEFT CLICK to DRAG your ELECTRONIC ARTS FOLDER into the MY DATA folder, I almost lost my head when this happened 😂
my sims 4 documents keeps deleting itself and it's driving me insane, i don't know why, it was working fine 1 moment then the next it just all deleted, i don't understand and it's upsetting @@gamerimage
thank you for this tutorial! i'm running into a slight problem though. i followed your instructions perfectly, but i strangely end up with the terminal saying "cannot create a file when that file already exists." I'm rather confused on what to do to avoid this message ;-;
If you're having issues instead of dragging it with the right click just cut and paste it to the new location then run the command again. It just has to not already have an exact folder like the one on the new drive there.
@@gamerimage I'm still having this problem, sadly. I don't know why this keeps happening, but I will say that after moving it over, the electronic arts folder in my documents is completely empty. does this affect it at all?
@@iamthatlaame Yes, you'll still need to at least delete the empty directory. That folder called "Electronic Arts" cannot be there at all, unfortunately.
Thank you for the tutorial! I wish I had seen this the last time I tried to free up space. FYI for anyone watching, if you're having trouble and it is saying that the syntax is wrong, you might want to try capitalizing the d in /D. I know it worked in the example but for some reason my computer was very picky about it being a capital D instead of a lowercase one.
That could be super helpful! But even the documentation mentions lowercase lol! Syntax: mklink [[/d] | [/h] | [/j]] Parameters: /d Creates a directory symbolic link /h Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link /j Creates a Directory Junction Specifies the name of the symbolic link I’m glad you were able to get it going though! If you're getting this error, it's most likely that PowerShell isn't opening with elevated privileges. To open PowerShell with admin permissions directly do this: 1. Hey guys! If anyone encountered the "You do not have sufficient privilege to perform this operation" error in the windows powershell prompt, remember to run it as administrator first! I made this mistake, but after running as admin it worked!
@@gamerimage since I'm in the comments... You wouldn't perhaps know of any tips and tricks to make the sims game launch faster? Since moving the electronic arts folder to my hard drive, the game takes forever to open and load. Once I'm in game it's fine. But the startup process is quite a while 😅
The startup process is dependant on three factors ideally. 1) External drive speed 2) folder loaded size. If your loading your mods, the larger the file folder, the longer the wait 3) computer processing power. The better specifications of your pc the better the load. Ultimately if you can insert another drive INTO your laptop this would be ideal. You wouldn't have to know all of the above mentioned items would you
Hoping to get some assistance! So, good news is I was able to copy the file from my (C:) to the external hard drive. The issue is I opened the game and it started up brand new, no saves, no mods etc. I noticed that on my (E:) there is another Origin folder with Sims4 that has folders such as "installer" "Data" 'Delta" "EP01". Is this what is causing the game to run without my saves/mods? Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks in advance, your videos are great!
Make sure the link is created completely, 100 percent saying "Electronic Arts" is there is an accidental space or something in the middle, before or after the system won't count the name as the same thing as the "Electronic Arts" folder. The data folder seems like you've moved the game into the same drive. But this won't cause any complications. Just delete the shortcut and do this in an admin cmd: mklink /d "c:\%username%\documents\electronic arts" But at the end of the command put quotes around the full electronic arts directory path. If you're lucky the window hasn't been closed but you can hit the up arrow and it'll go back to the last command you ran and you can edit the extra space or typo! Let me know if you still need help! 😊😊😊
I had this problem turns out I shouldn’t be using the terminal admin but the power shell so search up power shell in your search bar then select run as admin and then follow the steps

I keep getting a message that says “cannot create a file when that file already exists”. The locations are different, so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Unfortunately, getting the "file already exists" error means that you copied and pasted the Electronic Arts folder instead of cutting and pasting it. This means that inside the documents folder there is still a file folder named "Electronic Arts". This is what is causing issues. You have to cut and paste the file folder completely to the new drive which removes it from the documents folder. Once this is done then you can go ahead and run the command again.
Hey! What do you do if follow all these steps but when you add new mods/CC to the mods folder in hard drive...nothing changes in the game. The mods are listed in the game under options but are not functioning and new CC is not showing up either
Ok this is kind long and done of this is silly. But I'm throwing you everything I found: If you have followed the steps to create a symbolic link for your Sims 4 mods folder successfully, but the game is not recognizing new mods or custom content (CC) added to the linked folder, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try: Verify the correct folder structure: Ensure that the mods and CC files are placed in the correct folder within the linked directory. In most cases, mods go into the "Mods" folder, while CC items (such as clothing, objects, or hair) should be placed in the appropriate subfolders within the "Mods" folder. Check mod compatibility: Confirm that the mods and CC you have downloaded are compatible with your current version of The Sims 4. Some mods or CC items may not work properly or at all if they are not updated to match the game version. Clear the game's cache: The Sims 4 creates a cache of various game data, and outdated cache files can sometimes cause issues with new mods or CC not appearing. To resolve this, clear the game's cache by following these steps: Exit The Sims 4 completely. Navigate to the following folder: Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. Delete the following files: localthumbcache.package, localthumbcache_#.package (where "#" represents a number). Restart the game and check if the new mods or CC are working. Disable conflicting mods or CC: Sometimes, certain mods or CC items can conflict with each other and cause issues. Try temporarily removing all the mods and CC from the linked folder and then add them back in small groups or one at a time. This will help identify if any specific mod or CC is causing the problem. Verify file integrity: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, it's worth verifying the integrity of your game files. To do this, follow these steps: Open the Origin client (if you have The Sims 4 installed through Origin). Go to your game library, right-click on The Sims 4, and select "Repair" or "Verify." Allow the process to complete, and then restart the game. If you have the EA Desktop app installed and you need to clear the cache for The Sims 4, you can follow these steps: Exit The Sims 4 and close the EA Desktop app completely. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type the following path in the Run dialog box and press Enter: shell Copy code %ProgramData%\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop This will open the EA Desktop cache folder. In the EA Desktop cache folder, locate and delete the following files: cache.db cache.db-shm cache.db-wal After deleting these files, reopen the EA Desktop app. Launch The Sims 4 from the EA Desktop app and check if the new mods or CC are functioning correctly. I'm sorry it's so long but I can't limit it to one thing! 😞🤦🏻♂️🥴
@@gamerimagewhen I type in this last in run dialog box it says that it cant be found what should I do,I tried everything and I still cant see my cc and mods in game

I have TON of CC, and need to move both my game and my CC etc to my new external harddrive..but I get the same message.. I have so little space on my computer now, the game won't update either. I'm a green newbie, I'm 45yo with no experiance in computers, or other games than TheSims2, 3, and now 4. How to normally install or uninstall it. My computer only concists of TS4, with all of my CC and mods. No music, no movies, no pictures, just the Game. It's the only thing I use my computer for, don't know much else😂 Hoping we can get an answer to your question soon.. Hello from Norway🇧🇻 btw, and happy New Year, hopefully we both will be simming away in no time🙏🏻🎆🎆
Can't believe this tutorial really worked thank you so much❤ but my hard drive loads so slow, how can i undo this so ican just move my mods folder instead of the ea folder? Thanks in advanced
I'm so glad it worked for you! But I'm sorry that you're having issues! So here's what you'll do: - Go to your documents folder. Delete the "electronic arts" link - Cut and paste your Electronic Arts folder from your external drive back to the documents folder (this will put everything back in its original place) - go into your mods folder once your cut and paste is done - copy the address bar location here - open the admin PowerShell if you haven't already - in the PowerShell type "cmd" then hit enter (without the quotes) - type: mklink /d " - then paste the directory and add a set of quotes: " so now it'll look something like: mklink /d "c:\users\%username%\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods" - add a space and open new quotes " only one - cut and paste the mods folder wherever you need to note on your external drive. - go into the new mods directory and copy the address bar location here. Paste in into the PowerShell window and close the quotes: example like, mklink /d "c:\users\%username%\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods" "d: ew folder\mods" and make sure there's not a mods folder inside your Sims 4 or you'll get an error. - hit enter and watch the magic happen! It's identical to what happens in the video just using the mods folder instead.
Great tutorial. Short and to the point! My only amendment to it would be that they might need to right-click on Windows Powershell and "Run as Administrator" to get the commands to work.
I appreciate the kind words! ❤️ however that’s why 0:50 is put into place because that is the equivalent of right clicking power shell and running is administrator
i did this and also set the location of the game download all to a same external hardrive, problem is now that the games takes super long to open and it runs so slow, any solutions to what i did wrong or what might be going on? thank you so much
EDIT : ok so i found out why it was taking so long to start, i currently have about 7000 package files of MODS set up into the game but thats the reason why i bought an External Hardrive cause i wanted it to run smooth and not lag, is it the external hardrive that cant process all the mods? what can i do to make it run better without deleting any mods or returning the external harddrive
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your game's performance after using the drive! I would assume here that the lag and slowness are due to the drive's performance. Could you get me the make/model of your drive and I'll do some research to see what's going on there! Here are the steps to get the drive's make and model: Connect the external hard drive to your computer. Click on the Start menu and type "msinfo32" into the search bar. Press Enter or click on the "System Information" program that appears in the search results. In the "System Information" window, look for the "Storage" section in the left-hand navigation pane and click on it to expand it. Click on "Disk" to view a list of all the disks connected to your computer, including the external hard drive. Look for the make and model of the external hard drive in the "Model" column.
@@gamerimage im using a 2tb Seagate One Touch HDD SCSI Disk Device, i barely bought it yesterday so i can be able to return it if you recommend a better one i can use, i appreciate it so much
@@AlexHernandez-rv2fk actually, there should be nothing wrong with the device. If you run CrystalDiskMark on it you should get results similar to these here: www.gizbot.com/amphtml/gadgets/reviews/seagate-one-touch-hdd-review-password-protected-backup-at-swift-speeds-075837.html However, you so then your bottleneck for your gaming might be coming from elsewhere.
I just did this and everything worked but the game isn’t seeing the save files so it’s starting up as a new game (update) I just checked the documents folder and I have two Electronic Arts folders. One is “electronic aarts” and is syncing with the hard drive and the other is electronic arts (not syncing) and makes my computer screen go black when I open the folder
This is a little confusing but it sounds like you might need to start with rearranging your folders and possibly use my mods fixer program video here: I Developed An App To Fix Sims 4 Mods! th-cam.com/video/UTMIpMoeLAc/w-d-xo.html

Here's some info: Symbolic links are a feature of the NTFS file system used by Windows. They allow you to create a special type of shortcut or pointer to a file or directory. However, not all file systems support symbolic links. For example, if you are trying to create a symbolic link on a drive that uses the FAT32 file system, you may encounter this error message. To determine the file system of a specific drive, you can do the following: Open File Explorer. Right-click on the drive you want to check and select "Properties." In the Properties window, under the "General" tab, you should see the file system listed. If the file system is not NTFS, it does not support symbolic links, and you will encounter the mentioned error when attempting to create them using the mklink /d command.
hi !! this video is really helpful and everything went well for me until it said that I do not have significant privilege to perform the commands, even though I am the only user (admin) on the computer. any idea what I should do?
There are a couple of things you can try, but you SHOULD be able to run this command if you're the admin. First, try starting Powershell as admin by hitting Windows + R. Then type: powershell start-process -name powershell -verb runas See if this opens Powershell as admin (shows "administrator" in the title. If it does not, then you'll need to go through these lengthy instructions (apologies for the lengthiness). Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type control userpasswords2 and press Enter to open the User Accounts window. In the User Accounts window, select your user account. Click on the "Properties" button. In the Properties window, make sure the "Group Membership" tab is selected. Ensure that your account is a member of the "Administrators" group. If it is not, click the "Other" button, type "Administrators" in the text box, and click the "Check Names" button. Then click "OK" to confirm. Click "OK" to close the User Accounts window. Restart your computer and try using the mklink /d command again. Let me know if any of this doesn't work!

@@deniya5774 There's a few things, but first if it doesn't end up loading the game at all and if you pull up the task manager and go to processes and you don't see a process that starts with TS4, then most likely the game terminated without warning.

Syntax: mklink [[/d] | [/h] | [/j]]
Parameters:
/d Creates a directory symbolic link
/h Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link
/j Creates a Directory Junction
Specifies the name of the symbolic link

If you're getting this error, it's most likely that PowerShell isn't opening with elevated privileges. To open PowerShell with admin permissions directly do this:
1. Press Win + R to open the "Run" dialog.
2. Type powershell and then hold down Ctrl + Shift on your keyboard.
3. While holding those keys, press Enter.
This will launch PowerShell as an administrator

@@gamerimage since I'm in the comments... You wouldn't perhaps know of any tips and tricks to make the sims game launch faster?
Since moving the electronic arts folder to my hard drive, the game takes forever to open and load. Once I'm in game it's fine. But the startup process is quite a while 😅
The startup process is dependant on three factors ideally.
1) External drive speed
2) folder loaded size. If your loading your mods, the larger the file folder, the longer the wait
3) computer processing power.

But I'm throwing you everything I found:
If you have followed the steps to create a symbolic link for your Sims 4 mods folder successfully, but the game is not recognizing new mods or custom content (CC) added to the linked folder, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
Verify the correct folder structure: Ensure that the mods and CC files are placed in the correct folder within the linked directory.
To resolve this, clear the game's cache by following these steps:
Exit The Sims 4 completely.
To do this, follow these steps:
Open the Origin client (if you have The Sims 4 installed through Origin).
Go to your game library, right-click on The Sims 4, and select "Repair" or "Verify."
Allow the process to complete, and then restart the game.
If you have the EA Desktop app installed and you need to clear the cache for The Sims 4, you can follow these steps:
Exit The Sims 4 and close the EA Desktop app completely.
Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
Type the following path in the Run dialog box and press Enter:
shell
Copy code
%ProgramData%\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop
This will open the EA Desktop cache folder.
In the EA Desktop cache folder, locate and delete the following files:
cache.db
cache.db-shm
cache.db-wal
After deleting these files, reopen the EA Desktop app.
Launch The Sims 4 from the EA Desktop app and check if the new mods or CC are functioning correctly.
I'm sorry it's so long but I can't limit it to one thing! 😞🤦🏻♂️🥴

- then paste the directory and add a set of quotes: " so now it'll look something like: mklink /d "c:\users\%username%\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods"
- add a space and open new quotes " only one
- cut and paste the mods folder wherever you need to note on your external drive.

In the "System Information" window, look for the "Storage" section in the left-hand navigation pane and click on it to expand it.
Click on "Disk" to view a list of all the disks connected to your computer, including the external hard drive.
Look for the make and model of the external hard drive in the "Model" column.

Copy and paste what you typed here and I'll see if I can set it straight for you! 👌👌👌
Mine says “the device does not support symbolic links.” Is there any other way to move it?
😊
Here's some info:
Symbolic links are a feature of the NTFS file system used by Windows. They allow you to create a special type of shortcut or pointer to a file or directory. However, not all file systems support symbolic links. For example, if you are trying to create a symbolic link on a drive that uses the FAT32 file system, you may encounter this error message.
To determine the file system of a specific drive, you can do the following:
Open File Explorer.
Right-click on the drive you want to check and select "Properties."
In the Properties window, under the "General" tab, you should see the file system listed.
If the file system is not NTFS, it does not support symbolic links, and you will encounter the mentioned error when attempting to create them using the mklink /d command.

There are a couple of things you can try, but you SHOULD be able to run this command if you're the admin.
First, try starting Powershell as admin by hitting Windows + R. Then type:
powershell start-process -name powershell -verb runas
See if this opens Powershell as admin (shows "administrator" in the title.

Firstly thank you so much for this video it has been one of the most concise ones i’ve came across! Everything worked for me until I went to open game and none of save files or cc are popping up. I’m not too sure what i could’ve done wrong.
@@garlicsock check that the location the symbolic link points to is correct and then make sure your computer doesn't have OneDrive installed

I usually never comment but thanks so much for this simple tutorial i can finally have all the mods i want 😅, I've been troubleshooting for a day, and i realized my gshade was what made the game not load.
GShade is definitely a problem mod unfortunately! I'm glad this worked
Heyy thank you so much for this video , I did everything you explained buuuut when I go into my game I don’t have any mods
You might be having issues because OneDrive is installed on your system. I know it sounds silly but this app causes so many strange issues and heartaches. If your PC does have OneDrive please check out this video here:

i recently bought an 2tb external hard drive because i ran out of disk space on my PC so my game wouldn’t start or it would crash because so much was taken up by my mods & i didn’t want to delete any of my mods either. IM SO GLAD I RAN ACROSS YOUR CHANNEL! after 2 attempts of doing this (because i missed an important step) it finally worked! all my mods and saved games are showing up! thank you so much, you’re a lifesaver! 🥹
