OMG!!! I have watched tons and tons of videos and tutorials on how to move my Sims 4 to a new drive as I ran out of space on my original one and nothing worked until I watched your video today. I didn't want to loose all my progress and mods but nothing was working. Turns out, like you said in the video, that I was using OneDrive without realising. I followed all of your steps to the t and my game is working perfectly now. I cannot thank you enough. I just wish I had found your channel sooner. I'll be telling all of my simmer friends about you and your content. Thank you!!!!
OH MY GOSH!!! Ok - this 18 minute video took me a couple hours to get through because I’m computer illiterate but IT WORKED!! I can not tell you the amount of tears shed. I had my system so messed up I was considering a roll back, a or even roll out (as in rolling it right out the door to the trash! ) 😅. This OneDrive might as well be a virus or malware for all the grief it caused. Thank you doesn’t seem sufficient praise but sir….Thank you!!!!! 🎉

Thank you sooo much!!! I only had to sit through ten other videos that were NOT helpful to find yours!! Thanks again for going through the struggles, or fails as you called them, for us so we didn't have to!

I’m so glad this helped! I’m sorry it took you three hours to get this fixed because this is not supposed to be something that ends up taking a really long time so I really sorry about that 😞 but I’m really glad that at the end you were able to get everything going. Thank you for being an amazing viewer!
dude this is so confusing EA would never make it easy so we have to turn around to get there. But, I'll try to rewatch it later before execution. Thanks for the video!
OneDrive is definitely a game killer. There may be one more entry in the registry that says "OneDrive," you might have to remove it or give it another location.
I’ve spent over 3 months avoiding this and I haven’t finished the vid yet so idk if It works but I really hope it works for you because I felt the exact same way and that’s why I avoided doing this
If i stop this process at 10:40 and don’t have an external ssd atm will it start saving any new sims data to my new real documents folder without problems ?
if you don’t have an external hard drive, then you should be fine. Just go ahead and use your Documents folder just like you would if you didn’t move it, and you should be fine! ❤️
Can I redownload one drive afterwards? I completed this process successfully but I still need one drive for school stuff but I don’t want it to resync the data
Unsyncing the Documents folder in OneDrive should indeed keep the symlink alive. Here's the process simplified: 1. Install OneDrive: Download and install the OneDrive application on your computer if you haven't already. 2. Access OneDrive Settings: Open the OneDrive settings by right-clicking on the OneDrive icon in the system tray and selecting "Settings" or "More" > "Settings." 3. Navigate to the "Account" tab: Go to the "Account" tab in the OneDrive settings. 4. Unsync the Documents Folder: Find the option to choose which folders to sync and unsync the Documents folder. This will exclude the Documents folder, including the Sims 4 data, from being synced to OneDrive. By unsyncing the Documents folder, the symlink you created to move your Sims 4 data to an external drive should remain intact. This means that your Sims 4 files will still be accessible from the external drive, even though they are no longer synced to OneDrive.
This video helped me so much! I just wanted to ask if an external hard drive is needed? OneDrive is uninstalled from my computer and I copied my Sims game onto my Documents folder that's on my actual PC and I tried to run my Sims game and all my mods are showing thank goodness. Then you started talking about using an external hard drive - is this step needed or just extra?
It’s technically extra, because I recommended to add storage to your computer. But if you don’t happen to have one currently, and space isn’t an issue, then I wouldn’t worry about having to have an external drive! 😊 let me know if you have any other questions
hey! so i followed perfectly up until 9:41 in the video! my EA folder was still in there and had a one drive short cut in it. i managed to figure out what i needed to do with help from a friend who specialises in this stuff and managed to then proceed with the video (i basically had 2 copies of my EA folder but one had no data in and the shortcut to one drive had everything in) (i had also deleted the one drive software completely btw) my friend managed to talk me through it and basically told me to do what you are saying in the video (just with a few more steps) i opened my game to check and everything was working fine! all my data was there my saves ,mods, literally everything. i then proceeded with the video and put it onto an external hard drive successfully but now my game wont load cas basically at all. im not sure what to do
i can play the game fine, save just fine but when it comes to editing my sims in cas it just doesn’t work, i don’t get past the loading screen. have i done something wrong? My friend told me basically exactly what you did in the video pasting the file into the original document folder but to delete the short cut afterwards which was completely fine, i then obviously went back into the register editor to check my files now said the right thing and they did so im not entirely sure where i have went wrong
ive watched your video on loading issues and i think it may be my external hard drive not having enough storage or being to slow? just all of my registery files are exactly how they should be and theres absolutely no one drive in my files anymore. do you think this could be the case?
@@bethgallon-main880 I would definitely try to make sure that the MKLINK command was creating the right shortcut to the destination on your external drive. Absolutely! Unfortunately yeah unless your computer happens to have an extra hard drive inside it, you would have to purchase one. Is there any chance your machine shows multiple large drives like a C drive and D drive or such?

Hello! I followed everything up until 9:38. For some reason my documents file still says it's apart of OneDrive. I looked through the comments and tried everything. I've changed everything in registry that had OneDrive on it. I've restarted my computer many times and it still says it's apart of OneDrive. Could you give me any other instructions how to fix it? Thank you so much! 🙏🏽
You still have to physically cut and paste the files out of the OneDrive folders and manually move them to the documents folder. It won't be automatic unfortunately
@@gamerimage I did everything correctly and the folder is able to be located into my hard drive. But none of my saves or mods are showing up. What do I do now! 😭 Is it because I don't have an extended hard drive and put it into my main one?

If this was followed properly you should have copied or moved the stuff inside the documents folder that was on your OneDrive to the actual location and after the registry changes this should've come up. Did you change all registry entries with OneDrive erasing that part?

Unfortunately, if you're using OneDrive in any capacity and syncing your documents folder at all, sadly it's going to sync any data that is shortcut created to OneDrive. Meaning that if you have a 1 or 2 terabyte folder you're linking to using the mklink command it's going to try to sync that 1 or 2tb of data, unfortunately. I would suggest using another account on your windows computer that isn't syncing to OneDrive or create one
Make sure your actual documents folder in c:\ users\%username%\documents\electronic arts\ is the correct folder. Not the one with OneDrive. Also be sure to restart your computer. Be sure all registry entries are changed

If you don't need to remove the game to save space then moving the game to inside the documents folder kinda defeats the purpose. Thank you so much for the video, it has been very useful to me, just one question, is it necessary to move them to my external storage or can I leave them in my real documents folder?✨😺❤
For moving new mods you downloaded you can either copy them straight into your Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods folder **(that's the classic way)** or you can just drop them wherever you linked that external drive with the mklink command you ran! 😊 Either way works, so just pick what feels easiest for you!
Hey there! I’m a bit new to navigating technology and computers so I have a legitimate question, which may sound really simple to someone who knows what they’re doing, but I can’t quite figure it out so I thought I’d ask, so what if before starting any of the moving files and all that, what if my One Drive folders are all empty and unused. Do I still have to do all of this and get rid of One Drive or would that just be unnecessary? Thanks a lot man. (I have an external hard drive and it’s set up just for context)
If you ever had a OneDrive folder, it's possible it was never used. But you'll want to skip to the section where I pull up the registry and check these entries and make sure none of these have OneDrive in their paths. If they do just double check OneDrive is removed. Otherwise you might not need to do much! 😊 Let me know if you have any issues!
@ Thanks so much for responding! And actually I’ve checked the properties of my Electronic arts folder and Sims 4 folder, and the location was in “Documents” and not located in One Drive at all. I have never used One Drive or ever had an account with it, therefore there was never any data to un-sync from the app to begin with. I’m sorry for my confusing ways of explaining haha.
@ I’m so glad I was able to help you out! It really makes me smile knowing I was able to touch the few people that have come to the channel! Happy simming! 🎮🎮🎮
Hello, apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, I am relatively new to computers and I’m terrified of completely killing my system. 1. When you referenced to the “eternal hard drive” in the video, are you talking about the kind that you buy at the store? Or is it already on my PC? 2. When I want to download new mods or update current ones, will the process look/be the same as it always was just without syncing to one drive? Or will there be different steps? Again, I apologize if my questions make no sense, just got my pc about a month ago so I’m learning slowly 😅😭
@@kyrahmarshall2145 no apologies needed! It's perfectly normal to be scared of breaking important things! 😊😊😊 To answer your questions: The drive would be one you purchase. I have a couple recommendations for this: - a.co/d/hlk1Me4, and - amzn.to/453Lg8D When you download mods in the future you'll be going to the documents folder, into the "electronic arts" shortcut, the Sims 4, and then mods and putting them into this folder. (If you feel comfortable, you could also put them into the folder you link later on the external drive. If you're still needing help I have a subscription where I'll take care of everything for you! The comments from that video led me to this one. I followed everything, except I had already moved the EA folder from the Documents to the external drive. I already created a folder, but there is no EA folder in Documents. Should I move the EA folder back to Documents and start all over again now that I have removed the OneDrive app?"
No you shouldn't have to do that. Simply create a symbolic link from this folder that doesn't exist yet mklink /d "c:\users\%username%\documents\electronic arts" "d:\wherever" just as an example. You won't have an electronic arts folder there yet so you just create the link And boom

If after making the registry changes after finishing the video doesn't make your mods appear, try doing the following: 1) Press Windows+R and type regedit in the prompted Run box. Press Enter to open the Registry Editor. 2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders 3) In the right pane, double-click on the registry keys that point to OneDrive, such as Personal, Desktop, Pictures, etc. 4) Change the value data to the original location of your folders: - "Personal" = %USERPROFILE%\Documents - "Desktop" = %USERPROFILE%\Desktop - "Pictures" = %USERPROFILE%\Pictures 5) Double-click on the registry key named {F42EE2D3-909F-4907-8871-4C22FC0BF756}, which is the UUID for OneDrive. 6) Change the value data to %USERPROFILE%\Documents, which is the default location for the documents folder. 7) Click OK and close the Registry Editor. 8) Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Hope this helps! ♥♥♥

@@gamerimagehello mr gamerimage! i appreciate all your help, but when i attempt to change the location of my documents folder (restoring it to default without being connected to my onedrive folder), i get an error message that says “can’t move the folder because there is a folder in the same location that can’t be redirected. access is denied.” could this be due to the linked ea folder?
This error typically means you're moving the documents folder into a location where it's either the exact same location it's in (just in a differently linked folder), or that the folder is inside the folder you're trying to move. I hope this makes sense!
If you're referring to the part after the mklink /d there shouldn't be any issues as long as the computer's been rebooted and Onedrive's stuff has been fixed in the registry editor. I think I broke my sims 😭 I try to download it to another internal storage drive and it won’t show me the full Electronic Arts folder, can’t find my Mods folder at all and I’m unable to play with Mods.. kind of freaking out..
Try typing either of these into the file explorer address bar: %userprofile%\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods ... or... %userprofile%\onedrive\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods And tell me which one works! ☺️☺️☺️
@@gamerimageI just tried typing them both in and neither of them worked for me 😭 Edit: I just followed this video again, I moved the Electronic Arts folder to another storage drive and it worked, but the Electronic Arts file is also still in my Documents folder on the original file it just has a little shortcut symbol on the file, I looked at the properties of that file and it says it’s in my other storage drive that I wanted it on. Question, will I be able to delete that file on the original documents folder or should I keep it there? Not sure if this made sense
@@Ashhhlizzzle if you have three little shortcut symbol on the"Electronic Arts" folder inside the doc Documents fine folder then you're completely set! However, deleting the shortcut will break this and you'll have to rerun the command again. So great job getting it figured out! 😊😊😊
When I went to open the game to check if it had worked, right at this point my The Sims updated. The Electronic Arts folder still shows up on my PC (from C: from where I wanted to move to D:), However, the folder appears with a blue arrow and clicking on Properties, it says that it is in the destination in which I chose (D:\Game\Documents\Electronic Arts), however, when opening at the D: location, the folder is empty. And I couldn't transfer all my mods and my save when I opened the game. What should I do? Do I repeat the process again? Obs: When I went to copy the path, I didn't have the Documents in D:, I created it inside there, inside the folder that I called games and put it, is the error because of that?
And now I have a problem that every mod folder I transfer to this new location, the mods disappear after a while, except for the loose files, like More columns. I don't know what else to do 😢
Hi I know this is kind of not related to the vid but can you pls help me? I am so very very clueless as to what is happening on my sims 4 game. Yesterday I uninstalled my onedrive on my dekstop due to not enough storage, but before doing so I have backed up the saves and mods files of my The Sims 4 games. I ended up changing the install location on EA app after I uninstalled my Sims 4 into: C:\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\ in hope so when I have installed it and put the mods and saves back into the file, it will work as usual. And then I proceed to move (cut and paste) the mods and saves file that I have backed up on the new folder that is now on my dekstop, not on onedrive anymore. The thing is, no matter which tutorial I followed, my mods and saves file couldn't seem to work/load, although I have activated the mods and script in the game. Do you know why is this happening? Please help me, thank you so much in advance.
You may have some redirects still happening. Check the registry at 7:40, and in there check for ANY entries that mention onedrive on the right hand side. There may be one in curly brackets. Remove the word onedrive from anything in those registries and then restart your computer. Let me know how this goes!
this question is actually kind of difficult to answer because I’m not exactly sure what step you manage to get to before you happen to quit working on this lol. So from what I am aware of the only way to essentially undo everything that you’ve done is to ensure that the actual documents folder, that’s not inside of the OneDrive is back inside of OneDrive and that the location of the documents folder properties shows still inside of OneDrive and then try to run the game again. If you’re needing some hands-on help, I do have a subscription where I happen to help people with this directly and take care of it completely from top to bottom, so let me know if that’s something you’re interested in.
I will give you 100% off of a months subscription (choose to keep it or cancel it if you wish) just to save your game. Just don't factory reset your machine 😩😩😩
Ok so i did everything I moved all my files but every time I open sims it creates a Electronic arts folder on my desktop and when I detach my flash drive I still have all the ccs and mods on my computer storage how do i fix that bc originally I wanted to move my files to free up space on my computer
If you've already created the shortcut, but the EA folder still keeps coming back, then try this. 1. Rename the Electronic Arts folder, but before changing it, copy the name so the actual name "Electronic Arts" is in your clipboard. 2. Add a number 1 to the end of this folder name. 3. Rename the folder shortcut you created because of my video. Erase whatever is there and paste the name you just copied. If everything worked successfully you should be able to restart your game and the Electronic Arts folder shouldn't come back.

@@gamerimagecan you do this for me?
If i stop this process at 10:40 and don’t have an external ssd atm will it start saving any new sims data to my new real documents folder without problems ?
if you don’t have an external hard drive, then you should be fine. Just go ahead and use your Documents folder just like you would if you didn’t move it, and you should be fine! ❤️
Can I redownload one drive afterwards? I completed this process successfully but I still need one drive for school stuff but I don’t want it to resync the data
Unsyncing the Documents folder in OneDrive should indeed keep the symlink alive. Here's the process simplified:
1. Install OneDrive: Download and install the OneDrive application on your computer if you haven't already.
2. Access OneDrive Settings: Open the OneDrive settings by right-clicking on the OneDrive icon in the system tray and selecting "Settings" or "More" > "Settings."
😊 let me know if you have any other questions

is there anyway to just exclude the sims folder and let it sync with other files because I do have to use onedrive a lil bit
Sims starts up fine afterwards but all my saved games are now gone
Make sure your actual documents folder in c:\ users\%username%\documents\electronic arts\ is the correct folder. Not the one with OneDrive. Also be sure to restart your computer. Be sure all registry entries are changed

If you don't need to remove the game to save space then moving the game to inside the documents folder kinda defeats the purpose. If you already have it on an external and you need to move it to your computer that's fine. The external hardware is only so you have extra space. to just use the Documents folder on your computer, you just simply have to follow through this video, make the registry changes, reboot, your computer, and then move the stuff from the documents folder in the OneDrive into your original documents folder in the video shown and then you don’t have to move it into an external drive.

For moving new mods you downloaded you can either copy them straight into your Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods folder **(that's the classic way)** or you can just drop them wherever you linked that external drive with the mklink command you ran! 😊
Either way works, so just pick what feels easiest for you!

To answer your questions:
The drive would be one you purchase. I have a couple recommendations for this:
- a.co/d/hlk1Me4, and
- amzn.to/453Lg8D
When you download mods in the future you'll be going to the documents folder, into the "electronic arts" shortcut, the Sims 4, and then mods and putting them into this folder. (If you feel comfortable, you could also put them into the folder you link later on the external drive.

The OneDrive folder isn't going to go away. That will start there until you move all your data to the documents location and delete the OneDrive folder (if you wish to do that). Hope that helps! 😊😊😊
@gamerimage I realized that after I commented. :) I am going to sign up for your help because I am so confused.
Hi, can I still install OneDrive for other things?
As long as you remove the symlink it automatically creates for you for the documents, then absolutely
Mine doesn’t give me the full address to the game’s directory been following all the steps and it’s not showing
If you're referring to the part after the mklink /d there shouldn't be any issues as long as the computer's been rebooted and Onedrive's stuff has been fixed in the registry editor. Any chance there are still more directories listed on the registry location that have "onedrive" in their directory values?
Any chance you've figured this out or would you still like some help? 😄😄😄
This should take you to the full address:
C:\users\%username%\documents
I don't have an external harddrive and I'm half way through this process! EEE. Can I follow the same steps and just save it to my computer?
Yes! No worries
@@gamerimage Thank you for replying! I've got halfway through, and I'm really struggling. My mods are lost now and aren't shown in the game. Can you help at all? Or is there a way to reset everything so it can go back to normal? I feel a bit silly thinking I could do this! :D
Plus. One drive won’t even open now. Any help would be appreciated. 😭

can i move my sims4 game and cc to google drive? and will it work
You can. And It will but it will have SEVERE and I'm not kidding at all... lagggg
I think I broke my sims 😭 I try to download it to another internal storage drive and it won’t show me the full Electronic Arts folder, can’t find my Mods folder at all and I’m unable to play with Mods.. kind of freaking out..
Try typing either of these into the file explorer address bar:
%userprofile%\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods
... or...
%userprofile%\onedrive\documents\electronic arts\the Sims 4\mods
And tell me which one works! ☺️☺️☺️
@@gamerimage should I type that before or after downloading the sims 4?
@@Ashhhlizzzle before is fine. Having the Sims won't change anything here for either of these being typed in. Only one of these should work honestly
@@gamerimageI just tried typing them both in and neither of them worked for me 😭
Edit: I just followed this video again, I moved the Electronic Arts folder to another storage drive and it worked, but the Electronic Arts file is also still in my Documents folder on the original file it just has a little shortcut symbol on the file, I looked at the properties of that file and it says it’s in my other storage drive that I wanted it on.
I don't know what else to do 😢
Sounds like issues with a cloud syncing program like OneDrive or Dropbox
It seems like the game could not recognize/read my saves and mods. I have tried to click "repair" on EA but it still wont work 😔
You may have some redirects still happening. Check the registry at 7:40, and in there check for ANY entries that mention onedrive on the right hand side. There may be one in curly brackets. Remove the word onedrive from anything in those registries and then restart your computer.
Let me know how this goes!
Is it there a way i can undo this I messed up everything now my sims 4 doesn't work
this question is actually kind of difficult to answer because I’m not exactly sure what step you manage to get to before you happen to quit working on this lol.
@@gamerimage Im hard resetting 😭 lol I feel so dumb I was following up until the command prompt thingy after the reset and I couldn't focus lmao

Don't feel dumb at all. These are very complex, multi part processes. It can definitely overwhelm people
Ok so i did everything I moved all my files but every time I open sims it creates a Electronic arts folder on my desktop and when I detach my flash drive I still have all the ccs and mods on my computer storage how do i fix that bc originally I wanted to move my files to free up space on my computer
Actually I think I fudge my shizz up 😅 ima just get the subscription later on
Haha! I'm sorry to hear that! But I'll welcome you to the subscription nonetheless!
Do I have to uninstall the game first in order to do this
No you don't
@@gamerimage everytime I do it it still pops up in the documents folder 😩
If you've already created the shortcut, but the EA folder still keeps coming back, then try this.
1. Rename the Electronic Arts folder, but before changing it, copy the name so the actual name "Electronic Arts" is in your clipboard.
2. Add a number 1 to the end of this folder name.
3. Rename the folder shortcut you created because of my video. Erase whatever is there and paste the name you just copied.
If everything worked successfully you should be able to restart your game and the Electronic Arts folder shouldn't come back.
Thank you!
You're absolutely welcome! ❤️❤️
Didn't work at all and after i restarted it deleted all of my games. Dont try
I would be careful about spreading misinformation 😊😊😊
hi i need some help i watched your previous video on how to move the ea file to the external drive and it’s on it but it’s also on my original documents folder but also on my one drive folder if i delete it from both with that ruin my game? also i have already backed up all my files onto my desktop and all my saves are on my external drive all the info is there but my game keeps opening as a new one since the files on one drive and my documents don’t have any saves on them
also i just checked the properties on the original ea file on my desk and in the shortcut section it says start in: c: which is should say D: (the external drive) could i also just edit this to be the external drive location?
@@Jena182 unfortunately, it's not so easy. If you have the mods and saves in your external, then the onedrive has to be removed, the registry has to be edited and then a new mklink has to be run to point the game to your external drive. Hey we found a way shorter/easier way of doing this with the help of ur vid lmk if ur interested in it
Sure! If it's legitimate that sounds awesome!
all my electronic arts files are gone and deleted and i cant find them again im so mad i had so many stuff
Sometimes files get accidentally moved to incorrect directories by accident. Go to the "computer" tab on the left and so a search from here for "Electronic Arts." Hopefully this searches every drive and every folder that way you can see if it got misplaced
@@gamerimage its misplaced on a different drive but all my data from the game is gone and erased and i put the files back in the documents but my game data wont come back
I'm not understanding... The Electronic Arts folder was misplaced but doesn't have the right data?
@@gamerimage it's not that it isn't the right data, my whole game data is missing even when i put it back in my documents file

If the registry wasn't changed properly you won't have the same documents location and some files could essentially go missing. Make sure all the registry changes are completed before trying to play the game
