Me too! It's been exciting to see so many people helped because of this video! And the game's only going to get larger and more bulky! Hahaha! Soon we'll all need terabyte external hard drives JUST for The Sims! Hahahaha
YALL THE REASON WHY WHEN YOU DO THIS AND YOUR MODS AND SAVES ARE GONE IS BC YOU NEED TO BACK THEM UP. basically copy your mods, saves, and tray files folder and put them somewhere else on your computer and after you reinstall the sims 4 to a different drive then add those folders back into the sims folder
But what if we're downloading the game fresh to the drive n don't have those folders to move? Because I'm not seeing those folders anywhere in the Sims 4 folder
@@Kitty.ggaall if you don’t see these folders check your documents folder. That’s where they live. If you haven’t started the game for the first time then this is why they’re not there
I've been so paranoid and anxious for years about moving my sims 4 to a hard drive because I've seen countless horror stories of the game breaking due to the mods. This was so beyond easy! I left all of the folders in the documents file and my game and mods works perfectly fine. I went from, not even kidding, 1gb on my C drive to 42.7gb! That is wild! Thank you so much for this video, you've saved my storage!
For someone like me who is so clueless when it comes to technology I don't understand how to switch my Sims to the external drive I bought 😢 There are elements of this video that totally goes over my head like how and where to create the new games folder 😫
Sometimes it helps to have written instructions. So here you go. For a Windows PC, when you click "This PC" you can see all the drives attached to your computer. Make note of the drives you already have attached. When you plug your new external drive into your computer it will assign it a new drive letter. Remember, C is the computer's main drive. You can figure out which drive letter was assigned to your external drive by noting the new drive letter. You can then open that drive from This PC's list, right click in the empty space and in the menu click New Folder and press enter. Right click on the New Folder and click rename. Rename it anything you want but something that you will remember is where your Sims are installed. Try not to use the name "Sims 4" because EA will create a folder with that name inside this new folder for you and it might be confusing to have two folders with the same name. Then follow the rest of the instructions in the linked video and this video. Good luck.
Thank you so much! I have so many packs and barely anything else on my laptop but it was taking up so much space that I was having trouble downloading anything else. This was so helpful and easy to understand, especially for someone who is NOT tech savvy at all. I really, really appreciate it!

I’ve been at this for about 3 days going CRAZY! I kept getting so many errors on my SSD drive but I FINALLY fixed it with the little bit of help of this video and my own trials and errors so here’s a little tip for WINDOWS users only. TRY FORMATTING YOUR EXTERNAL DRIVE TO “NTFS” !! my ssd was originally set to “exfat” and this was my main problem for my errors that I was getting but once I formatted it to “NTFS” everything works smoothly now and I’m able to play my game on my ssd drive! Here are some things you can try: Right-click on The Sims 4 in your EA App library. Select "Pause Download," wait a few moments, then select "Resume Download." Ensure you have a stable internet connection with decent download speeds. (You most likely do, but it's always good to check.) Close the EA App completely, then reopen it and try the download again. Run EA App as Administrator: Right-click on the EA App shortcut and select "Run as administrator." Deeper Troubleshooting: Clear EA App Cache: Close the EA App completely. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type "%ProgramData%" (without quotes) and press Enter. Find the "EA" folder and delete its contents. Restart the EA App. Check for Background Interference: Close any unnecessary programs running in the background. Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software that might be interfering. Verify Game Files: Right-click on The Sims 4 in your EA App library. Select "Repair Game Files." This might take a while. Last Resort: Uninstall and Reinstall EA App: Completely uninstall the EA App from your computer. Download and reinstall the latest version of the EA App from EA's website.

So I'll ask my question in steps: - I haven't done anything yet, except back up the entire Sims 4 folder from Documents on an external drive. - I want to move the game to my D drive. - I understand that if I uninstall the game from the C drive, the EA app will remove its files from Documents? - I change the install location on the EA app for ALL EA games and I (re)install the sims 4 to the D drive, that should be fine? - So there will be a new sims 4 folder, but in the D drive, with designated saves, tray and mods subfolders? - If I move my save files, tray files and mods/CC into that new folder, then I should be able to play the game as if nothing has changed? I once moved my game saves from an old PC to a new PC and from what I understand, moving the game this way to a different drive is the same idea? 😅
1. **Backing Up the Sims 4 Folder**: - It's a great practice to back up your Sims 4 folder from Documents to an external drive. This ensures you have a copy of your game files in case anything goes wrong during the relocation process, even though the game itself doesn't touch the Documents folder. 2. **Moving the Game to the D Drive**: - Proceed with moving the game to your D drive using the EA app as planned. This still helps in freeing up space on your main drive and potentially improving game performance. 3. **Changing Install Location for All EA Games**: - Changing the install location for all EA games through the EA app's settings is still recommended if you want all future installations to go to the D drive by default. 4. **Reinstalling Sims 4 to the D Drive**: - After changing the install location, reinstall Sims 4 to the D drive as planned. The EA app will create a new Sims 4 folder on the D drive with the designated subfolders for saves, tray items, and mods/CC. 5. **Moving Save Files, Tray Files, and Mods/CC**: - Once the game is installed on the D drive, you can move your save files, tray files, and mods/CC into the new Sims 4 folder. This should allow you to play the game as if nothing has changed, as long as all the necessary files are moved correctly. Since the game doesn't touch the Documents folder in this instance, you can skip worrying about files being removed from there during the uninstallation process. Regarding symlinking your Electronic Arts folder, you can follow this helpful tutorial video: [Symlink Electronic Arts Folder Tutorial](th-cam.com/video/AaLnm8t7hgk/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugz4B7SmLDettYFek7d4AaABAg) Let me know if you need further clarification or have any other questions!
is there a way to import my old saves from before the uninstall if i have the old save folder? i already moved the game but wouldn’t have done it if i’d known it would erase all of my households and builds /:
Here's what you can do: Locate your old save folder: First, you'll need to find your old save folder. It's usually located in the following directory: Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. Go ahead and navigate to this folder on your computer. Backup your current save folder: Before we attempt to import the old saves, let's make a backup of your current save folder, just in case. Simply copy the entire "The Sims 4" folder and paste it in another location on your computer. Replace your current save folder with the old one: Now, take the old save folder you have and replace the existing "The Sims 4" folder in the Documents/Electronic Arts/ directory. This will overwrite the current game data with your old data. Launch the game: After replacing the save folder, go ahead and launch The Sims 4. Check if your old saves, households, and builds are restored. You should be able to find your previous content in the game. Please note that reinstalling the game shouldn't have removed any of your data or households. However, if you had any mods or custom content installed, you might need to reinstall them or ensure that the necessary files are also copied from the old save folder to the new one. I hope these instructions help you recover your old saves in The Sims 4! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

I keep seeing people suggest getting an external hard drive but what is really the benefit? I dont really know much about computers, Does it help your game run better or is it just for extra storage?
It's for extra storage. No external drives can truly improve performance as USB ports are typically the slower parts of the motherboard. These are always bottlenecks unfortunately.
So I think I was able to move my sims to my external drive. But am I able to delete it from the c drive to free up space? Every time I try and do so I have to redownload the game from EA and start all over. But it still shows as taking up space in my external drive. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
This is a strangely worded question unfortunately and I'm not sure how to answer it. Because the data lives in the Documents folder, not the game itself. Regardless once you uninstall the game you'll be able to create the directory anywhere you want it to be regardless
hi, this is probably gonna sound really dumb 😭 i’ve moved the sims to my D drive yet for some reason it’s still taking up storage on my C drive? i’m not sure how to word it properly but basically it’s saying on my C drive i only have 11gb of storage left even though i should have loads more because i’ve just moved and deleted sims. if you could help i would really appreciate it but if you can’t it doesn’t matter!!

what drive did you move it into?
For someone like me who is so clueless when it comes to technology I don't understand how to switch my Sims to the external drive I bought 😢 There are elements of this video that totally goes over my head like how and where to create the new games folder 😫
Moving Sims 4 from Your Computer To External Drive Quick Overview
Good luck.

Here are some things you can try:
Right-click on The Sims 4 in your EA App library. Select "Pause Download," wait a few moments, then select "Resume Download."
Ensure you have a stable internet connection with decent download speeds. (You most likely do, but it's always good to check.)
Close the EA App completely, then reopen it and try the download again.
Run EA App as Administrator: Right-click on the EA App shortcut and select "Run as administrator."
Deeper Troubleshooting:
Clear EA App Cache:
Close the EA App completely.
Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
Type "%ProgramData%" (without quotes) and press Enter.
Find the "EA" folder and delete its contents.
Restart the EA App.
Check for Background Interference:
Close any unnecessary programs running in the background.
Temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software that might be interfering.
Verify Game Files:
Right-click on The Sims 4 in your EA App library.
Select "Repair Game Files." This might take a while.
Last Resort:
Uninstall and Reinstall EA App:
Completely uninstall the EA App from your computer.
Download and reinstall the latest version of the EA App from EA's website.

@@Meadowsandmangoes thanks for the info! Usually USB thumb drives are not the best for putting intense items like a full game on them. But! If you have an external hard drive those handle gaming MUCH better as they're made for heavy use.
Oh I think I screwed up my entire game attempting to do this 🙃🙃
What happened?
@@gamerimage Okay so, I had to download that Revo Uninstaller things to uninstall The Sims 4 because I still had an update to do and couldn’t uninstall it in the EA app. But now I don’t have to option to change the new file I created where I can put the game into. So, I decided to go to settings and just change it there to see it could work but then whenever I click download it keeps giving me an error. 🥴 So I’m very much stuck.
@@lelavigo6033 me too!
Hi, I had the EA app but I uninstalled it by accident and I don’t have enough space in my pc to reinstall it so therefore I can’t update sims, Is there any way I can move to EA app to my hard drive without it being installed??
Unfortunately no. However you can temporarily move all of your game data and saves using my video here to help alleviate space until you can move it back! th-cam.com/users/shorts-OViiF1nqKk?feature=share
This video was so helpful it showed up on my drive and I was able to play but my new issue is that all my backup mods and save don’t show up when I move them into the folder where the new download sims 4 is
This shouldn't affect those items. But if you hadn't OneDrive you'll need to check out this video here

Is it possible to keep my progress after I move the game
Is it imperative to uninstall the game on your ea account? I don’t have the three dots option to look at my properties or uninstall. Can I uninstall on steam?
Steam has a different process to move
I did this a few months ago but still wasn’t enough storage, if
I’m moving it from one external hard drive to a new external hard drive do i follow the same process
Yes. Absolutely. Just be sure to backup any of your saves and mods because I know a lot of hard work goes into those.
what i'm struggling with, is my actual game itself is in the ssd where i want it. but everything else sits in the "documents" folder for some reason
It's because that process is different

Wait, you're not really moving the game, you're deleting it and downloading it back again.
But to a different storage device! 😁😁😁
Ok I moved my game yesterday, but now it’s showing as uninstalled on EA. How do I open it if it’s still on my ext. hardrive
If you moved the game you have to change the installation directory in the app
I did this but got an error when I tried opening the game itself. It said initialization error at startup
Some of this pertains to the Original client, but these steps might help get you on the right track!

So I'll ask my question in steps:
- I haven't done anything yet, except back up the entire Sims 4 folder from Documents on an external drive.
1. **Backing Up the Sims 4 Folder**:
- It's a great practice to back up your Sims 4 folder from Documents to an external drive. This ensures you have a copy of your game files in case anything goes wrong during the relocation process, even though the game itself doesn't touch the Documents folder.
2. **Moving the Game to the D Drive**:
- Proceed with moving the game to your D drive using the EA app as planned. This still helps in freeing up space on your main drive and potentially improving game performance.
3. **Changing Install Location for All EA Games**:
- Changing the install location for all EA games through the EA app's settings is still recommended if you want all future installations to go to the D drive by default.
4. **Reinstalling Sims 4 to the D Drive**:
- After changing the install location, reinstall Sims 4 to the D drive as planned. The EA app will create a new Sims 4 folder on the D drive with the designated subfolders for saves, tray items, and mods/CC.
5. **Moving Save Files, Tray Files, and Mods/CC**:
- Once the game is installed on the D drive, you can move your save files, tray files, and mods/CC into the new Sims 4 folder. This should allow you to play the game as if nothing has changed, as long as all the necessary files are moved correctly.
Since the game doesn't touch the Documents folder in this instance, you can skip worrying about files being removed from there during the uninstallation process.

is there a way to import my old saves from before the uninstall if i have the old save folder? i already moved the game but wouldn’t have done it if i’d known it would erase all of my households and builds /:
Here's what you can do:
Locate your old save folder: First, you'll need to find your old save folder.
So I can’t update my sims game bc my C drive is full. Now I want to move my sims to my D drive bc that one had a ton of space. If I do this will I keep all my saves? And do I move the save files with the game to another drive?
Your files should read just as they had. Worst case scenario they don't read and you move them back haha
Thanks! I’m gonna try now, idk why but messing with my files really scares me🥲😅

does this work for save files? because last year i installed the sims to my external when i got a new laptop... eventually all my C drive memory is filled to the brim where i couldn't even update anything and after investigating i realized that all my sims save files and game data and mods were all going to my C drive and not my external where i planned. i tried some cmd prompt hacky stuff to change the save location but it just uninstalled my game and when i reinstalled it the EA / sims 4 folders just appeared right back in my documents on my c drive brand new.

does this work with a cracked version of the game? will my mods still work on my original game and cracked when moved?
I apologize, but I'm not very sure as I've never used the cracked version. Though I do not endorse the cracked version your mods and saves are stored in the documents folder and should generally not be touched. But always make a backup in case!

Mine worked , how ever it’s taking a very long time for it to load when I play my game.
Tis can be due to the type of hard drive that you have plugged in as well as where it's plugged in. There are lots of factors here but if anything check to see if the device is USB 3 or higher and that it's plugged into a USB SS port (typically blue or marked)
Hi, I followed all of your instructions, and it was rather successful. My issue now is that, even though I have already quit the app, every time I try to eject my drive, it states that a program is using it and needs to be closed. Can you please help me how to fix this?
FYI, my external hard drive contains both my game and its files.
@@KathleenNoarin the quickest way to fix this is always to log off and then manually pull the drive out

@@kevin6480 moving the game shouldn’t have moved that data. that data exists on its own inside of the documents folder inside of the electronic arts folder inside the folder called the Sims four that data does not move with the game so there should not have been any changes made to that
Hi there, do you need to have the EA app on your hard drive as well for this to work? I've tried to download the app so many times onto my hard drive but it keeps ignoring the location I've set and installing on the c drive
The EA App doesn't necessarily need to be installed on your external drive for this to work. If it seems to be ignoring your changes, it could be that you need to open the EA app by right-clicking it and running it as an administrator to make changes. Try this little trick and see if that changes anything. I'm sorry you're having a hard time with this! But I'm here to help as much as I can! 🤗😊

Ok one: how do you know if ur admin. It’s my pc but I keep getting an error. And two: I wanted to do this because I don’t have enough space on my comp for mods so would I add future mods into my external hard drive and it will work for my game?
If you can right click the start menu and open "PowerShell (admin)" or "Terminal (admin)" and it runs then you're an admin
do u keep the mods in the original folder on the hard drive? i move them to the external and they aren’t working. help😢

will cc work after moving the game out of c: documents to a secondary hdd (FOLDER "Games"?
Ummm, this is confusing? Because this is moving the game from c:\ program files\ea games\ to an external drive. This does NOT touch the documents folder. Moving the game from the documents folder happens in this video:

I keep seeing people suggest getting an external hard drive but what is really the benefit? I dont really know much about computers, Does it help your game run better or is it just for extra storage?
It's for extra storage. No external drives can truly improve performance as USB ports are typically the slower parts of the motherboard. These are always bottlenecks unfortunately.
I followed every step but for some reason it won’t let me download, like it won’t let me click next for some reason
You have to like try to run a fix and try re-downloading it
So I think I was able to move my sims to my external drive. But am I able to delete it from the c drive to free up space? Every time I try and do so I have to redownload the game from EA and start all over. But it still shows as taking up space in my external drive. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
You have to make sure the download location is changed in the EA App check out 2:45
Will this still work if your sims 4 game is in your documents? because I dont see it in my computers main drive
